If you come up to the north of Portugal, like Vila do Conde or example, food is even cheaper and better, since Cascais, Sesimbra and Lagos are hot tourists spots and they're prices are higher them average.
As Portuguese from Lisbon that is true. In the North is cheaper and food is better with real flavor. The Portuguese fish is the best. We are the masters of the sea you know... We have to travel 8000km to fish the most traditional dish dry Cod (bacalhau), there are 1001 ways to do it, my favorite is simple grilled with veggies and olive oil over, or with scrambled eggs and small chips (bacalhau à Brás)... Hum that's a hard choice.
Very true. The most expensive places top live and buy some foods are Lisbon and Porto, the rest of the country not so much. Life is great in Portugal !
Welcome to Portugal. First of all thank you for choosing Portugal and I hope you find here happiness and peace. About the bread, I know you call bread to industrial stuff that have long validation dates, just give a try to local fresh real bread. I try to figure out which has less chemicals or none. Yes the validation is short but you can buy fresh bread/pão everywhere ... Oh gosh warm bread with cheese or butter... About Sesimbra you have to try fresh fish grilled like sardines is amazing. If eat pork just try Porco Preto (black pork is a kind of pork that is produced on Alentejo's region) or carne de porco à alentejana (pork with seafood clamps I think, and lots of flavor). And of course the calorie bomb the best sandwich of the world from the Porto city - the Francesinha (spicy sauce over a layer of melted cheese and lots of kind of meat under). Back to healthy food here you get easily great healthy real food, mixing up italian(roman), Mediterranean food (garlic, olive oil is the base), African and Asian food all mix up (Portugal heritage of being the first world empire and the inventor of globalization). Almost every restaurants are nice just go to Google Maps and check the comments and score.
Certainly appreciate the comparison. But just keep in mind that things may seem very inexpensive to Americans. But they are not to the Portuguese. We are bringing American dollars into Portugal. The average Portuguese citizen does not earn what the average American citizen earns. So it is important to be very sensitiveand refrain from making comments about how inexpensive meals are.
@DawnMartinez-v8d thank you for your comment. My apologizes for any offense this may have caused. To be honest, this is my first time having a UA-cam channel and it was started to help our friends in the US. I never thought it would be watched by the great Portuguese people. I will definitely keep in mind for the future. Thank you.
1:10 - In this case the US packet becomes even more expensive because it has only 226g (8 oz) versus the 265g from the portuguese packet, so you pay more AND you get less. 4:30 - As you probably might know by now, here in Portugal none of those places are considered restaurants.
Like you said and probably the most important is the quality of the food. US food is designed to make you sick and keep you addicted to it. This feeds the healthcare industry with a steady stream of victims. It's mostly pure garbage unless you pay a fortune for "organic" and even then it's a crap shoot since there isn't a US corporation or company that I trust any longer. I love the food in Portugal and feel so much better when I am there. We have our visas and are off to Portugal in 5 weeks for retirement. 🙂

Best of luck to you and safe travels!
In Portugal there are no tipping policies, so you save more money
Most states have no tax on food. I live in Italy, and prices here are really cheap except bananas.
should you visit cascais, give De Benedictis a try, italian restaurant, owned by a very nice and very funny italian man
