Melanie died this week, and as I was mourning her by playing UA-cam videos of her performing, I found yours. Glorious! You made everything alright, you celebrate her music and talent, you made everything alright. It’s official: you are a sweetheart
Melanie chose The Edwin Hawkins Singers to back her up on this iconic song on her experience at Woodstock. Thanks you for finding this live performance in Amsterdam, the home town of my own mom! Your reaction is how this song makes me feel too. Rest in power and peace Melanie. You will be so missed!
Melanie was the prototypical flower child. A sweetheart. Things were definitely better then in every sense. Check out Oh Happy Day by the E. Hawkins Singers. By the end you'll believe in God
Love your intense reactions. You feel it all and express it all. Living life to the fullest. Sheer awesomeness. Welcome to the 1970s, the greatest decade for music EVER!
i'd forgotten about this one. whenever i hear the name melanie i think of "brand new key",but this one is much more serious, and the choir is amazing. thanks for bringing it back to me.
Just finding out Melanie has passed away. She was one of my true favorites. I have every album she ever made, which is around 30 albums. She never gave up writing, singing or her poetry, she traveled through Europe and did concerts all the time (she was very popular in Europe more than US) she continued until she passed. I'm now in tears..
@@brainsqueezereactions Melanie was a lovely soul who sang about peace, love, compassion, understanding, relationships and life's struggles., I hope you'll delve into more of her songs. There is a song of hers titled "Do you Believe" and there is a live version of it from the Old Johnny Carson show, where it's just Melanie, her voice and her guitar. It's from one of Carson's early 70's shows, you can find it easy on youtube.. It would be lovely if you could react to that song and dedicate it to Melanie..Thanks for responding to my comment I love your style! No pretentions!!😎
My GOD... Melanie... I remember a brilliant New Year all the way up in Scotland and Melanie was part of the soundtrack... MORE memories... Mark you do it on every reaction.. The White Bird in the song was the white dove which was the Woodstock Logo....!!! (I cannot wait until you have to go round ALL the decades again..... HAHAHA).. Keep on rocking.
Piano, guitar, hand clapping, and fabulous singers, and it sounds like drums. That’s all that’s needed and it sounds fantastic. Almost sounds like an organ in the background also. I was a kid when this song came out and I still listen to it.
Wow, that really lifted my spirit. And I hadn't seen this footage before although I vaguely remember the song, and that was tremendous. She really has some pipes, doesn't she.
I was in college, renting a room from a lady when I came across this song. It was part of a Super Hits of the 70's group of songs. Listening to in in my headphones, I CRIED. I played it over and over and over again. That was 1982.
Smiling from ear-to-ear. Always enjoyed Melanie. If you're really going to do the Edwin Hawkins Singers then you MUST react to "Oh Happy Day." A gospel choir recording discovered by a San Francisco DJ and history was made.
As a 60's child its always such a joy to hear the music of my era....Music today doesnt come close to being on the same page...Most of it today is all about show, back then it was all about the music and nothing more...And it was the best music that has ever been.....RIP Melanie knowing you and your music were indeed loved by all....
This is the closest you can get to time travel. I felt carried back to the early 70s, complete with its ideas, dreams, attitudes, art, and of course music of that moment in time, 1970. A million words wouldn't come close to watching this video and listening to "Lay Down."
Thank you for reacting to this joyous song❤ I listen to it often and am immediately taken to a better place. Sweet one of a kind Melanie gave us all of her heart. Sing with the angels now beautiful Melanie ❤
I think this is from Dutch TV. I went there a few times, when I worked for aerospace. Lots of the people are bilingual or speak even more languages, but particularly English. They would have British artists come over and carry out interviews, in English, with the presenter. At random points, they would break off, and translate the previous conversation into Dutch, for those who were not following.
For some reason, this reminds me of Take Another Little Piece Of My Heart. Both Janis Joplin and Erma Franklin did epic versions but they’re both 60s. Wish I’d thought of them sooner!
Tell you a little story Shortly after this song came out. My mother brought it home on A45I could never get enough of it. I'm even over the years. I'll go back to it and it just brings tears to my eyes. I love her voice. I love the music that she's done in her life. And it's saddened me to think that she died this year. January 24th 2024. She was 74 years old. What a great singer song writer. Also married to Jimi Hendrix for a little while. Who she met and said he was her protector at Woodstock. It's one hell of a music career this woman had. And she'll always be in my mind, always be in my thoughts.
I've watched at least a half dozen great reactions to this song, but I think yours might just be my favorite. (And something that hits me in this version that isn't as apparent in the studio version is how actively the percussion drives the whole thing. Love it).
I watch a LOT of reactors listen to new music (to them), but I have NEVER seen anyone genuinely LOVE seeing and listening to music they are unfamiliar with as much as you enjoyed this video of a truly great and underrated talent. You earned a like and a subscription my friend.
If you like the Edwin Hawkins singers, you should listen to the song I'll Take You There by the Staple Singers (1972). They are fantastic & soulful. They were always a gospel group, but this song transitioned them into contemporary mainstream music and the top of the billboard charts.
I favor the Greatest Hits studio version for one reason only! It runs 8+ minutes, and she's singing melody and harmony lyrics together, puts chills down your spine! And from the lyrics, the Staples just drive you higher and higher! It is a complete spiritual high. In the right frame of mind- how could you not!- you can feel from your feet to your head lifting up and off the floor! Aside: I've seen more modern pictures of her, and she hasn't lost a trace of her youthful passion, plus a smile to die for! Congratulations to finding this gem!
I completely agree with you that the studio version is truly spine-tingling! But.....It's not the Staple Singers; it's the Edwin Hawkins Singers. HUGE difference.
while mentioning Woodstock, you should check out Santana's "Soul Sacrifice" from that festival. This was before the band had an album out and nobody outside San Fran knew of them. Its a mind blower (for more than one reason). 1969 i know, but they became a big 70's band and later a 00's reconfigured band.
Melanie is still beautiful. Love this video clip.....particularly toward the end, when they show the really old people in the audience not knowing how to respond to the young hippie chick.
have watched at least 5000 of these reaction videos and this might be the best one. Jealous of the joy you can muster up. Plus the song is top ten of them all (Procol Harum in Denmark may be my #1).
'Aloha Hector - just wanted to remind you that it wouldn't be the 70's without Stevie Wonder (Superstition) and Janis Joplin (Ball & Chain / Summertime which is cover song and many have) I'd throw in Jethro Tull and Joe Cocker!
Such a joy to see young folks enjoy music I and many others listened to and reveled in when the songs were actually released. I used to often ask myself, "I wonder what my next favorite song is going to be?" Melanie passed from us 2 weeks ago. Lovely person by all accounts. Clever, witty, humble, and profound musician. She is just wonderful. I love your enthusiasm. She is expressing her experience performing at Woodstock where she worried all day she would bomb only to blow every one in attendance away. Fabulous. She would have loved you!
If you are interested in the Edwin Hawkins singers check out their 1968 release called Oh Happy Day. I will admit that I am an atheist, so then with this song it's not so much what they're saying but the way they are saying it. I remember hearing it when it was released on the local pop stations. ✌️
Was a youngster when this song and her other "Brand new key" came out, became a fan of Melanie -this was one of my favorite songs, it was the beginning of the hippie era, Woodstock era it was all about peace, love and since there was also the Vietnam war it was about global peace, anti-war.
Wow this brings back beautiful memories of the 70s. The generation of love and peace. I was a 70s kid. I remember my mom and dad taking us kids with them to the music festivals. The best music ever made! The 70s! Rest in peace beautiful Melanie! We lost her January 23,2024.😢❤
Oh man, listeing to this girl made me remember the "White rabbit" from the Jefferson Airplane. You missed that incredible piece of music history of the 67... THAT should surely be into your collection of reaction. Such and iconic sound!!! By the way, if you like this genre, get a look to Joan Baez song "Diamonds and Rust", my father, who died at 39 on Italian father's day 19-march 1985 was a real fan of her...
That was amazing!!! I've never heard the song before this, and I generally do not like 70s music (or so I thought). You and the people recommending these songs are changing my mind. ❤
Brilliant, some of us of that era, 1970, all had the hots for Melanie and probably touching themselves after watching this. RIP lovely Melanie 'Woodstock' Safka, always in our hearts ❤❤
I don't know if you already.Understand the song nowI don't know if you already. Understand the song now. But if you were at Woodstock, it was they were expecting a 100000 they got 500000 people were so close and all it did was rain. Yeah, the closeness bleeding in somebody else's wounds. We all caught the same disease. That disease was the music. Because out of all the people that came to Woodstock, not very many people left rain or not. But I'm glad to see that somebody else. Feels this song the way I feel it. And I always. Have from day 1 the first time I heard it.
That was a Happening. That's what they called it. A very special moment in time. Your right. That's not what's happening now. At least not in popular music. Can you imagine a time where Sinatra, Elvis, Streisand, Janis, Bowie, Beatles, Stevie Wonder, MELANIE etc... etc were all putting out music at the same time? Yes, we are wondering what happened. Glad you get it.
RIP to this beautiful and talented woman.
Melanie died this week, and as I was mourning her by playing UA-cam videos of her performing, I found yours. Glorious! You made everything alright, you celebrate her music and talent, you made everything alright. It’s official: you are a sweetheart
Rest in Peace, dear Melanie! You were and shall always be, my sweet Queen of Peace and Love!
The definitive Woodstock experience from Melanie. Powerful. Beautiful.
This is such a spiritual adventure! Her best song. She had other hits as well, like 'Brand new key'. A more lighthearted tune.
I had forgotten "Brand New Key!" We used to sing that one in choir...a fun one!

RIP Dear Melanie…..the first singer songwriter i fell in love with as a kid….heartbroken tonight…
Melanie was the prototypical flower child. A sweetheart. Things were definitely better then in every sense. Check out Oh Happy Day by the E. Hawkins Singers. By the end you'll believe in God
I haven't heard this in decades and never this version! Taking me to church on a Tuesday afternoon in NY! That chorus is SPECTACULAR!!
The studio version of this was with the same Edwin Hawkins Singers too. It was pretty much exactly like this.
Spiritualized! One of my favorite lyrics ever: We were so close, there was no room. We bled inside each other's wounds...
RIP Melanie.
💔💔💔
The Edwin Hawkins Singers' biggest hit was Oh Happy Day, number one over the world. I think you'll like it!
Brilliant Melanie!

60s....blew my mind....70s blowing my mind.....I mean I'm kinda scared for 80s!
In my opinion , she was a SuperStar of the 70's
AGREED! This was an absolute joy to hear from the very first time I heard it. So awesome. The Edwin Hawkins Singers just send it into the heavens!!!
Seeing Melanie live I must tell you that her wonderful power & personality made her shows unforgettable! An incredible talent & amazing person!
An old fave, and I am THAT old! Love Melanie! I think that the white bird is referring to the white dove, a symbol of Woodstock

I've been a giant Melanie fan since the early 70s and your reaction was absolutely correct.
This music is what Taylor Swift believes she is doing. Not even close.
TS NO TALENT
Melanie was just under the threshold of superstardom.
