As a guitarist for 60 years who is developing arthritis in my left thumb I'm getting more interested in Keys as a way of extending my music playing life. Neo Soul is one of those Genres I've hear of but never understood. Recently bought a new midi keyboard and while looking for inspiration online I found your channel. This is exactly what I'm looking for. Totally recognise the "2 5 1 of Neo Soul" and had to pick up my guitar to try voicing I'm familiar with. Took me about 1 minute to come up with a song idea, modulating down a whole tone followed by a semitone drop to F Maj7 and a diminished to minor 7th ascending run back up to the A minor 7th again. SO much cool musical stuff in here that I totally feel comfortable with. Trick for me now is to learn these ideas on Keyboard. I'm going to enjoy your channel I think so thanks in advance.
i must admit, i like it when i see a lesson on modern harmony that i already use. i learned this by reharming rhythm changes and we've only just begun by the carpenters. these days it is my go to for playing, 'out,' over minor blues.
Am7 with Em pentatonic. The notes are: e(5), g(7b), a(root), b (9), d (4 or 11). Cool colors! C minor pentatonic over Abmaj7, the scale notes: c(3), eb(5), f(6), g(7), bb (9). The keyword is intervals.
maybe this helps: Em is fully with in Am7 (add 9). Cm is fully within Abmaj7. you can prove this to yourself by writing out all the respective chord notes. so to jam minor pentatonics gives acool vibe, fully related to the root chords, while floating above the rhythmn section root notes. This is a common jazz strategy for soloing. you can use it many scenarios.
Great video Simon as always ! I'm using your progressions to improvise over them as well as my 2-5-1's to start improvising over them with the scales ! i'm learning a lot with the piano pig channel !
Agree this is descending from Am7 to G#M9 this pattern looks complicated but it is not. Minor7 to major7(2) descending half note is very relaxing to try 12 notes
i think the answer is that, to keep the video under 90 min 😊. seriously, its just a neo soul vibe. you are free to choose different scales, try them out, mix and match, in any way you like. but this is a neo soul video, and simply put, that is the vibe. let me know if that helps.
I know you asked this over a year ago, but maybe someone else is wondering too. Modes are classified as major modes (Ionian, Lydian, Mixolydian) and minor modes (Dorian, Phrygian, Aeolian). For example, the Am7 chord has A-C-E-G, and both the Dorian and Phrygian modes contain those notes in their scales. However, Dorian will have an F# and Phrygian a Bb. Since the chord tones are the same in all three scales, you can play around with the remaining notes to create different sounds.
Isn't this just the first two chords of a ii-V7-IM7 but you're doing a tritone sub for the V7? A-7 -> D7 -> Gmaj7 but with a sub so it's A-7 -> Abmaj7 -> Gmaj7? I like the advice on the different voicings and improv options.
Great video Simon. How to apply chords on a blues scale, as what we do a major scale on not number 1 we create a major, 2 minor ,3 minor, 4 major ,5 major, 6 minor and 7 diminished. My challenge is I don't know how to create chords for the other scales or even to improvise them as I play some songs using a major scale
I don’t even play piano, I just rip off all these lessons and apply them to guitar
Haha a lot of these lessons would useful for a lot of different instruments!
So do I. Thanks Simon, we love you.
Word to that lol
Thank god you got a hair style Haahaha looks good
On the bass, what notes have I to play for make company with the keys?

That’s great to hear! Glad you found it useful 😊
When you were going rubato those voicings gave me chills man

Where do you put this progression in a Rhythm Changes?
@@yravggmr7302 like Bb B-7 G-7 Gbmaj7 C-7 Bmaj7 F7#9 B7#11 2 beats each chord. it's like a long rhythm changes.
The music was so relaxing I literally almost fell asleep😂great video
Glad you enjoyed it!
Can someone explain why he's suggesting an Em pentatonic over the Am7 chord and a Cm pentatonic over the Abmaj7 chord? 4:55

Another warm, intelligent, professional lesson. ❤
Geez that sounds so good and (looks) pretty simple!

That's great to hear! Keep up the good practice 💪
Man, you are awesome. My day has been filled with your videos, sending much gratitude your way!
Piano Pig is the goat
Thank you Simon. I have enjoyable work to do now.
Excellent lesson thanks! Gotta steal some of those chord voicings.
A great, simple and wonderful tutorial, thanks so much, a very good started point to play neo soul.
Excellent channel and content‼️ Just awesome🔥🔥🔥
Thanks alot, great video

great vid Simon, loving the permission to steal! Hope you are well and good.
Much appreciated 🙏🙏
Thank you your explanations were so helpful!
Love, love, love this xx
Another wonderful lesson. Thank you Simon
You're welcome!
After internalizing all the theory in my thick head: ...!
Simon: 5:40 : Or you can just use your ears 🗿
Best way to play! Learn all the theory, internalise the language... then forget it all and use your ears 🤣
@@Piano_Pighahaahaha
i'm a but confused. Why playing A dorian over Amin, and Ab lydian over Abmaj? i mean, why those modes specifically?
I would also like to know... Did you ever figure it out ?

Come fill the cup and in the fire of spring the winter garden of reclentence fling.
Thanks a lot... 🌻
Thanks
Why do you use A Dorian with Am7?
thanks for another great video big pig!!!
Thank you
Great lesson. Thanks!
Hi love your lesson
Thanks!
Excellent lesson Simon🙌🏾🎹..
Thanks man! 🙏
@ 3:17, can someone help me understand why the B and C notes work in the Amin7 chord? Am I missing something?
Because they are the 9th and 3rd of the chord which are very strong scale degrees!
Beau!!.
What's the logic behind Emin Pent over Am7 & Cmin Pent over AbMaj7??? Thanks
Question. How can I play Dorion over A minor, when there's no flat 3rd? Did you mean Mixolydian?
Why does the Cm pentatonic scale work well over Abmaj7 ?
Hey I'm kind of new to all this, why would I play an Eminor pentatonic scale if the route note of the chord is A?
Great lesson as always. Just wondering, is the Ab a tritone sub then?
Skipper's voicings

Im interested in learning gospel piano
The opening sounded a bit like billy joel , ray charles, my baby grand?
That’s that Charlie Brown music
Similar progression to Michael Jackson - Can't Help It
I think I am the original piano pig. I am extremely chunky and always have been. I stopped eating full pianos though.
😂😂😂
If you're big pig then who's little pig? 😮
Hmmm.... good question 🤔🐷
