Thanks Matt. Does anyone have a practice regime where you can practice 7s and 9s and the different voicings? The goal being able to play in any key on the fly! I can play them, but I'm slow and it takes a lot of brain work.
If you have instagram or something I can send you a whole rundown. It took me three weeks of practice but I have it forever now Same thing to anyone interested @fbmaj7
Hi Ashraf. I use a reference track, in my case Josie by Steely Dan to practice chord clusters. It has quick chord changes and I learn them slow then muscle memory kicks in and I then take it up to tempo. As regards 7s & 9s, I tend to leave out the root note in the right hand for more clarity. --------------- Stay Home - Protect the Beat - Make Grooves.
@@philippeb1507 absolutely! It’s late late where I am at but I will send you it whenever I wake up. It’s a bit long and covers a lot but it’s so liberating. Imagine not having to think about what you have to play whenever you see a chord like Ab13#11
@@Marijuana-Johnson When you see a number above 8 ie from 9 upwards just subtract 7 from it to give you the relevent position ie 13 - 7 = 6 then count down back from 13. So you just need to add a 6th up from the root position.
Thanks for the great video once again! With no formal training myself I'm watching through your videos like they are some sort of sacred texts of cool music 🙌
unbelievable the amount of inspiration you can get from this video, once again, many many many thanks to Matt for this, and hoping to get the part 2 of this video !!!!
Some serious Take away from this and my personal experience... 1. Learn all your Min and Majors Scales and all Modes... Ionian, Locrian, Dorian Phrygian Lydian Mixolydian Aeolian. One this is complete learn your Pentatonic scales. And then Practise your Major and Min 2 5 1 chord progression with 5 different voicings... Once you have this down, your music will start to sound so much better!! What is demonstrated in this video is a mix of these things at the core. You have to understand how modes work together and what your options are... He also touched on tritone sub chords (however I am not at that level yet... That is super advanced)
Tritone subs aren't complicated, like a lot of things they just have scary sounding words, like most things you said here. Tritone subs get their name because it's a 7 chord a tritone away from a V chord. But that is silly theory jargain that may be cool to know. It basically just mean you would play a 7 chord a half tone above where you're going. Makes for some cool chromatic movement in say, a ii V I turning into a ii bII7 I
The aesthetic of the thumbnail is simply scrumptious.
True.. anyone tell me what model is that?

Anybody else singing "Just the two of us "at the beginning?
What a beautiful Sunday with this "neo" chords )) from all……… thanks a lot Matt !
Thanks Matt. Does anyone have a practice regime where you can practice 7s and 9s and the different voicings? The goal being able to play in any key on the fly! I can play them, but I'm slow and it takes a lot of brain work.
If you have instagram or something I can send you a whole rundown. It took me three weeks of practice but I have it forever now
Same thing to anyone interested
@fbmaj7
@@Marijuana-Johnson Hello. I’d be so happy to practice your rundown. I don’t have IG but here’s my mail: ph.bizzini@gmail.com. Thanks !
How nice was that thumbnail
So warm and inviting
Like a magician pulling back the curtain...
Thanks for the great video once again! With no formal training myself I'm watching through your videos like they are some sort of sacred texts of cool music 🙌
How did you self-teach? What was the road? I'm kinda stuck in my progress
I guess practicing more by ear and thinking something as a fun exercise and not a challenge helps if you're teaching yourself.
@@sondrestrmme4006 what do you mean by practicing by ear? just playing around trial and error style?
One of the best things you can do is to listen to lots of other people's music - stuff you would like to play.
Love ya Matt Johnson - your channel is one of my favorites on youtube! Fantastic work as always. Thanks for being so cool and down to earth.
But can he play triads in C minor with the timing of a deaf flounder? Don’t worry my video is dropping soon 🙌
unbelievable the amount of inspiration you can get from this video, once again, many many many thanks to Matt for this, and hoping to get the part 2 of this video !!!!
What is the very last tune that Matt is playing on the outro? Love it.

Thanks, Matt! Glad you’ve also described the chords and explained what’s going on with the progression. Very enjoyable and accessible.
You need to make a midi chord pack my friend
oh my god I was about to comment the same this, you have to!!!!!! all the producers will love you
Those beautiful blue eyes just pop right out of the screen. Teach me.
Makes for some cool chromatic movement in say, a ii V I turning into a ii bII7 I
@@sondrestrmme4006 I get the theory but it is advanced imho! You average music maker probz doesn't do tritones
Watching this with my morning coffee makes my heart sing.
Matt, I’ve been a Jamiroquai fan for over 20 years - recommended to me by a bassist. Listening to you on here is inspirational. Thank you
I've been playing keys about 6 month, I've got a new piano coming in the morning and I can't sleep, so here I am at 6:20 am watching this.
