  • In this video I take you along the steps I use to trouble shoot the reverse lights on a typical late '60s and early '70s VW Beetle or Ghia. Once you understand how it all works it's easy to find the issue and get it fixed.

Thanks. You made a very nice video that is extremely informative with plain talk and camera views. Multiple owners have each put thier curse on the electrical system and one problem by one problem is being figured out. Thanks again!

Hey thanks! I'm glad it can help. Unfortunately with these cars it's often the case. Thanks for the comment! Let me know if you have any questions.

Excellent explanation. I could understand it because of the way you explained it! Now I know what all those wires are (some connected, some not) in and around my reverse switch. Now I am 100% sure I can figure it out. Thanks for the tip it is positive switching and not switching the ground wire. That helped my brain.

Thanks so much! I've been trying to figure out how these work on and off all day. Just followed the wiring from the gearbox through the engine bay and found a wire running to the ignition point that wasn't connected. Both reverse lights working 😃

Right on! Glad it helped. They usually should have a fuse on the ignition on wire just fyi. Glad it helped 👍👍

Excellent video! Able to trace the problem to the wire that runs to the fuse behind the engine fan. It looked like mice had chewed through it. Thanks!

Sorry for dumb question; How do u check the housing,? The bulb i know works, so, do i use a voltage light to check wher ot makes contact with the bulb? Thanks

    • @WolfHausMotorwerks
      @WolfHausMotorwerks  Рік тому +1

Each bulb socket should have +voltage at the small tabs at the bottom of the socket. The surrounding body of the socket is the - ground to be careful not to short the socket. I usually tape up the test light and only have the first few mm of the test light tip exposed. If no voltage at the base then pull the housing apart a d see if the wires are ok.
Some sockets where the bulb has 2 functions will have 2 contacts.
Obviously each socket will only be live when that circuit is turned on.
      Hope this helps!👍
Need more info let me know👍

@@WolfHausMotorwerks ok i’ll try that. My housing has 3 sockets. Signal lights, brakes, and reverse. Only reverse doesntnwork,..for both sides. Ps, i have a 1970 semiautomatic Ghia. Thanks for the suggestion

YOU may want to keep in mi d if the wires are somewhat stock, there is an inline fuse off the coil for the reverse lights. Also you can verify the reverse switch in the gearbox as it may fail or the connectors may be off.
Under the car at the nose cone you will see it on the passenger side.
YOU can test it with a continuity tester, in reverse you should have the contact closed in neutral no contact.
Also you can do a continuity test on the wires to see if broken.
The wires to and from the reverse switch are + so be careful to not ground them out.
Car does not need to be on to test continuity in the switch.
      Hope it helps!👍
