I'll never understand the draft best available mindset. As a buffalo fan it's so incredibly frustrating to see year after year they need to add a gritty physical player yet every year they draft the best undersized "skilled" forward available. They now have like 6 players that all play the exact same style and offense is lack luster most games. If only they had a guy throwing his body around clearing up space on the ice so the "skilled" forwards can make plays. Log jam effect is real and I think the drafting best available is a major cause to that. I strongly think draft what the team needs and have that player thrive playing a role that the team needs over being 5th in line as the "best available" maybe getting 8 minutes a night
@@robertskinner6487 Slafkovsky (6ft3 238lbs), Reinbacher (6ft2 194lbs), Demidov (6ft 192lbs), and Hage (6'1 190lbs) are not undersized. Mesar is the only small guy they've drafted in the first round under the new management.
The idea to draft the best guy available is that he'll have the highest value. If he's not an asset to the team, he can be traded for the asset you need. There is certainly logic to this, though there are practical challenges, and some teams have executed it well in the past. This video is exclusively highlighting cases where this did NOT work and the opposite was effective.

It's what made Sam Pollock so successful, probably the smartest GM in any sport. He took Bob Gainey with his 1st pick (8th) in 1973 causing a storm of criticism. Gainey had only 22 goals in the OHL. But he was the best all around player and ended up in the HoF, basically defined the Selke trophy.
Pollock was a genius. Not only did he have the best scouts and then trusted their instincts, he also knew the importance of having the best development system possible. The players would learn in the minors how the system worked, so they were prepared if/when they arrived at the NHL level. They also learned how to win, even in the minors. He did it all!
I think it's good for league as a whole when trades and offer sheets for young players happen. I can surely assure that whatever the future holds, fanbase of both Blues and Wild would be escatic to add young players like Holloway, Broberg, Jiricek, etc
What I have observed is the development system is so strong that it is producing too many highly skilled players which creates a bottleneck of talent. You also need grinders.
As a life long Penguins fan, I questioned them taking Jordan Staal at number 2, when Phil Kessel was available. Our last 3 first round picks were all Centers. Maybe if the Penguins drafted Kessel and paired him with a teenage Crosby, the Penguins would've been to easy to play against. As you've said, the NHL is a copycat league. Putting all of our firepower on one line would've made it to easy for other teams to defend against them (think the St Louis, Lecavalier, Richards top line in Tampa after their first cup year).
