  • Oral history with Frankie Lasco, drummer for Goatmentise, Driven By Hatred, and other bands, recorded on May 2, 2024, as part of the "Uptown Rumble: Heavy Music in The Bronx" project at The Bronx County Historical Society. The interviewer is Steven Payne, director of The Bronx County Historical Society.
In his oral history, Frankie speaks about his family's Italian background and remembers what it was like for him to grow up in the neighborhood around E. Tremont and Webster Ave. in The Bronx. He recalls his elementary school experience and moving to Brooklyn with his mom for part of his childhood, only to return to his old neighborhood in The Bronx in junior high, where he was already playing drums in the school band. Frankie remembers the rich musical environment he grew up in, exposed to classic rock-Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, the Doors, and more-and blues by his father and uncle, both of whom were musicians; as well as his first exposure to even heavier music through his older brother's love of Iron Maiden. Frankie talks about receiving his first drum kit in Christmas of 1989 from Bronen's Music, jamming with his uncle, getting into even heavy metal through his brother and Barry at the cusp of high school, his parents' stance towards the music he was getting into and how they raised him more generally, and his time at Walton High School.
Frankie goes into detail about the formation and early years of Goatamentise, some of their first and most memorable shows, other Bronx bands they were close with or were influenced by, where they would rehearse, lineup changes over the years, his experience on the band's various recordings, the effect of the murder of guitarist Milton on the band collectively and individually, and the recent activity of Goatamentise. He also shares his memories of his time rehearsing, playing shows, and recording with The Wasted, Driven By Hatred, Coffin 13, and Only Hell Remains (OHR). He recalls what the Boogie Down Crew (BDC) was all about when it first formed and reflects on what was distinctive about the sound of The Bronx scene.
