I knew you were strict with the first video of this series, and that's the kind of teachers I love the most. You learn more with strict teachers than those "chill out" teachers, honestly.
we know a teacher is strict when her sudden smile or laugh makes us realized that she can also smile and laugh and do jokes :) I like this teacher too :)
haha i could tell, too. but these teachers are tired of people taking a course because they think it'll be fun and they just hang out on there phones and then laugh about it. those students always have a problem with strict teachers. but if you're there to learn... then those are the best teachers!!
I am so glad you are that kind of teacher because there is nothing worse than a person who has tremendous talent but is so artsy scattered undisciplined unstructured that they can’t do anything with their gift.
I've bump into one of your videos a few days ago, and now every time I have free time I come back. You are a great teacher, thanks for sharing so much knowledge!
I've been having a difficult time understanding fashion design in class cause I just entered this field. Your videos have been extremely helpful. Thank you so much. Subscribed. I'll be watching all your videos. Pls don't stop making videos
29:18 Red leather with gold trim accent, denim base for the tops, and cotton for the bottoms, and gead piece needs a pare of thin sunglasses with a golden DC on the left side as the only logograph? I'm not a fashion designer. Graphic and videogame design are what I'm learning. Gachas need good fashion though. Thanks for fir helping! Loving this series! Edited for typos. New phone.
Loving this series!!! As a fashion student i cant tell you how helpful these are! Would love to see a video on tech packs, if you have the time! Thanks Again!
+Darren Malone Thanks! I have a playlist featuring videos on the more technical aspects like flats, style numbers, etc. but I haven't done a comprehensive on tech packs. I'll add it to the queue.
Yesterday, I was one of those stupid beginners entering a fabric store asking to see silk! Hahahah Thanks, Zoe, I learn so much from you. You are gold. I like strict teachers too.
Amazing Video...Thank you my prof in my fashion design course made it mandatory for us to watch your videos....you supplied such amazing information and made it fun...you had me laughing....can't wait to learn more from you. Thank you from Canada
Thank you for all your videos and sharing your knowledge Zoe. It has been a wonderful experience to find myself in the fashion industry which is a new career for me and learning a lot from you in the process. Please keep posting!
I'm eleven and have been watching since a week. No need to go to a fashion school I'm sitting at my study table taking notes hiding from my mother to pursue my passion! Wish me luck 🤞😸
OMG I LOVE your channel!! I know these videos are old but I’m brand new to fashion design & sewing. I actually start fashion academy in August. I’ve learned so much from just watching your channel. And I just about your age or maybe older I was born in the late 70’s close to the 80’s so I remember some of the styles you reference. You have me taking notes 📝 , learning, & laughing 😆 at the same time.
OMGOODNESS! I would love to have you as an instructor.... I would give a arm and a leg!!! lol I'll take you just as you are sarcasm and all! You are a info wildfire and that to my passion... I would leave your class ready to conquer the fashion industry! Thank you for your time, now I must watch the rest of your videos!
I will owe you part of my success when my brand gets huge. Love from Brazil, u always go really deep into the subject and it helps a lot, also serves as a guide for me to study more about fashion. Thanks a lot
This video is incredible, and I'm so glad I found this channel. I have a casual interest in design, fabric, and sewing, but I'm mostly a knitter who focuses on fiber content and yarn construction. I know how much the smallest details of both fiber and construction define how yarn will work and feel, with the knit/weave further defining the fabric, along with any finishing processes, treatments, etc.… This is the type of bottom-up approach I can't get enough of. This video is perfectly aligned with my learning style, and I'm currently very tired, but I'm super excited to watch more of your videos tomorrow! (Also, btw, I struggle to understand how your example was strict. Designing for the wrong season is like presenting an essay on the American revolution for an assignment on the industrial revolution. It doesn't matter how good that essay was - it wasn't the assignment. If you don't do the assignment, you don't get a grade. If you design a fall/winter outfit when you were assigned a summer outfit, that's an extracurricular. It's not bad that it was made - it's bad that the required product /wasn't/ made.)
Amazing video as always. I've got feedback from my first assignment, I've got a distinction. I'm doing Westminster University and I'm loving. Thanks for the hours of videos that helped me a lot to put my first fashion project together.
Several students have straight up told me that upperclassmen & grads warned them to only take my classes if they have an otherwise light semester course load. (My advanced illustration class in particular.) hahahahaha~
For me as an artist to be inpired you can create out of nothing...whether your a schooled artist or not...being an artist it's natural like a singer thumbs up tou you Zoe!!!!👋👋👋😁
Thank you so much for this video series. It has been a huge help and your passion is contagious. Yes please can you do a series on fabric (if you haven't already!!)
I know it's old but: The image @27:10 or so, it looks like a maple leaf. Possibly one where the pigment was leeched away by boiling it in an alcohol or some kind of solvent, and then re-saturating it with something else? Either way: It's a leaf. The vasculature is very cool!
Want you to know I really appreciate you and your work. I also studied entomology briefly and your leaf picture from your inspiration research is a leaf eaten by insects like baby diamond back (called instars) that eat everything but the external cuticle of the lead and veins so all that is left is the sheer first layer of skin
Zoe I need a little advice, I'm a garment printer that's started a business and things have gotten to the point. where i would like to have my own T-Shirt blanks for Sublimation made my way. I've tested and used a few 100% polyester shirts and love the 95% polyester 5% rayon for the Drape and feel like cotton but it seems hard to find a manufacture to make them for me at 234gsm bleached white as a luxury T-shirt.
My brother, sister, and I were visiting family in AK and drove by Wasilla lake. This was June of 1988. We stared in amazement as we saw people not only wearing shorts but swimming in the lake!! We were coming from the 100 degree sweltering heat of Kansas and freezing in the 65 degree Alaska summer weather. We still laugh so hard about that.
I'm sure loads of people have said it by now but I'm so so thankful for this series it's helped me develop my designs so much better!! Would you please be able to do the video on more technical aspects of real world fabric choices when you have the time?
Hi Zoe, you are amazing thank you :) I love your videos. I ave one question, could you please make a video about performance fabrics and the new functions and finishings of performance fabrics, like antibacterial, quick-dry 4-way stretch....... also could you cooperate into your video the new symbols that are you used when you buy clothes and materials with special functions. How do these functions/finishings work and how are they made. thank you so much big hugs form Germany
I just love the way you teach us or share deep knowledge about all things .. I just love your channel ❤️ you are big inspiration for me to become designer . And btw at point 27.17 you showed beautiful pic that is spring Maple leaf when it gets totally dry out it does look like that but it's looking more colorful. And with that you've given me idea for designing thanks alot for that 😄👍
Hahahhahaha Im working in a fashion world! Your so right Zoe because most of the designers in the house of Riva thats the brand...in my workplace they will stare at you...and automatically you knew already what's wrong😁😁😁😁👋👋👋✌ your videos are really entertaining it makes my day
I am a print maker! not with fabrics, but I just got the idea that I can do that, since I have done silk screen, etching all of that. I will give this serious thought.
Amazing video! First one I've watched by you, so good I'll watch anything you put up. But especially on tech packs, samples, first runs, anything I'll need to start a business as a complete novice! :-)
I really am happy to find a smart woman like you! Thank you so much sharing is caring! Can someone write me the step by step of fashion portfolio please? Cause I'm really baffled.
Hello Zoe, thank you for your videos, I’ve been watching many of them. I’m an architect and have been thinking of changing my career to fashion and the videos are actually really helpful for me. The only suggestion I have is if would be possible for you to write some names that you mention during the videos, because sometimes I don’t know exactly what you are talking about and want to do some further research, so with the names it would be easier :)
Zoe Hong yes! Actually started going through it! Am going to start the wools now. I’m not sure if I saw a section of wove a only (yesterday I watched the one that had mostly knits
Wow!!! Thank you soooo much miss Zoe for the heart❤😍! I've learned so many things about fashion from you. I love watching your videos over over again. You are my distance teacher. All your teaching really helped me a lot. From how to organise collections to the fabrics terminology.and this is a huge for me. It boost my self confidence. Thought i am working in a dress shop for more than 2 decades, but all i know is in arabic terms. I studied fashion designing but I'm kind a more on stitching and cutting which is it really occupied my whole time. And in middle East they demand very long working hours. So i didn't have a change on these kind of teaching which is i am really hungry to learn. Now that im not working on a company anymore since last month, while starting to build my own business in fashion, i would have more time for learning, seaching, and practicing on new and advance techniques. I subscribed since last year on your UA-cam channel and i give thumbs up on your fb page. So that I'm updated on your posts. And Every time im watching your videos I've learnt new thing. And it is really great for me. By the way,i really really! looove how the way you teach, it is so much fun and exciting, and you are funny too!❤ 😍thank you sooo much miss Zoe! More power!and God bless you!❤❤❤
I totally would love a video that had more of the technical aspects of design. The classes that you teach in person are they only semester long classes? Do you also teach like week long classes? Just curious because if I was ever in the area I would totally take an in person class from you.
+Dakota James More technical videos have been added to the queue. Right now, I teach at a university and my classes are each a semester long. Who know what opportunities might come up in the future? I'd love to do a week long workshop somewhere at some point. If that ever happens, I'd definitely let my subscribers know. :)
If you would come to the Chicago area and do a week long workshop, I'd work my tail off to help plan it, set it up, find you a venue and market it! But I'd come no matter where you did it!
+Zoe Hong I live in Brazil ... And most fashion schools here have a poor education ! My dream was to study in a school of good quality outside the country. Thank you for your help. Hugs
I studied fashion design but the courses did not include fabrics 😑 ana that was in french. So its very hard for me to understand all the info you are giving. Please add more photos please 😍😍 and thank you.
"Oh Zoe I want to take your class!!" YES SHE IS STRICT!!! It was my job to sit in her class and dear God students cry... Still want to take her class though. She's freaking BRILLIANT. Getting ready to go back to AAU and this is the one class I'm most excited for. PLEASE DO A FABRIC VIDEO (If you haven't already)
Zoe, you mentioned that we should not start with swatches that are too small. I am at the point of choosing swatches and am not sure how much I ought to be getting in order to be able to manipulate the fabric as I will need to for the rest of the project. How large should the swatches be? Does that depend on the type of material? Your precision and no-nonsense help so much to cut through the aura surrounding fashion design.
I would do something like 2x4 inches minimum, up to 6x6 inches preferred for complex fabric manipulations. Approximately. Depends on your formatting and presentation style.

Going through your "Design" series, You truly deserve to be more widely Known. Great teaching and funny!!
Thank you!
I knew you were strict with the first video of this series, and that's the kind of teachers I love the most. You learn more with strict teachers than those "chill out" teachers, honestly.
And it's usually the best students who prefer the stricter teacher. :)

agreed being strict is a bonus
I am so glad you are that kind of teacher because there is nothing worse than a person who has tremendous talent but is so artsy scattered undisciplined unstructured that they can’t do anything with their gift.
Yes, please make more fabric videos, Zoe. They'll be very helpful. Thank you again.
Cool, they're in the queue. You're welcome.

I've done a fabric video and will do more in the future. I have started a Fabrics video playlist.
Zoe Hong sweet!!! I just started watching them. Some of these videos give me flashbacks to sitting in the corner of your classroom 😂😂😂
Hello! Can you do a video about portfolio making. What things to include and what not. How to make it cohesive and organized
I have one. It's in the Fashion Design Process playlist.
Enjoyed your video. You’re a riot.
Yes do provide some more indepth knowledge in fabrics really needed...

I got my swatches yesterday! I am so excited to start sketching! :)
