Actually you may be right. I am a 'reader' so I look to books for how to do things, but the ability a video gives is so much more useful and user friendly. Pity you can't compile and sell as a video... I don't thing people buy videos any more. I bought an old Singer 191B straight stitch machine for EUR 30 in excellent condition and am so excited to start. I live so rural that I barely have a Leclerc, so fabric is an issue. But I've been trawling the Red Cross shop and cutting up old mens silk shirts and cotton shirts for little projects. I can't wait to get to a bigger city on a short break soon and pick up some fabrics.
There is a bag ok called fashion for fabric which is pretty much what you are looking for. It even comes with nice swatches glued is so you can touch the fabrics yourself. It’s a bit pricey (about 85cad) but from everything I’ve read and heard it’s fantastic.
I am so excited for the series! aand a confession here: Justine inspired me to build a capsule wardrobe and moreover, to try to learn sewing for myself! I am not planning to become a fashion designer or anything (not creative and cool enough for that haha) but I just want to have all in my hands: the fabric choosing, the ethical part of not purchasing from fast retailers any more, and being sure of what I wear-at least I can learn to sew basic pieces foe myself, we'll see... anyways, I am motivated and started searching for sewing classes yesterday. But I actually would never come to that conclusion, if I hadnt't been a "Justine club member" :) she is so influential and inspiring!

I wish I knew this a long time ago. I made so many wrong clothes purchases... tshirts being waaay too light and they look cheap, and outerwear that isn’t as warm... now I’ve learnt the difference. Thank you!

This video is so helpful for choosing high quality clothes, THANK YOU! I'm always wondering what should I choose to not be sweaty all the time. Specially in winter, because I feel warm and I don't wear many clothes, Then I get cold and I'll be sick all the time, and everybody say:"I told you", But I HATE SWEATING!!!!!!
you just need to go for natural fabrics in both sweaters / pants / dresses and coats / jackets. google something like "guide to synthetic fabrics" and read about them. google the same for natural fabrics. my personal winter favorite is cashmere (it's bloody expensive but worth the money). for outerwear - only wool and fur coats (whatever people might say about fur - it is the most comfortable material for a winter coat period). natural materials let your body breathe, so you'll never be overheating and sweating. and they do a great job keeping warmth. another way to stay comfortable is hiking coats. i don't know how to name them propely in english sorry. it's made of Gore-Tex and other similar materials.

I am shopping for a dress to wear to a wedding later this autumn, and the more formal dresses are in fabrics too light-weight, which will look out-of-season and be uncomfortable in the cold, and the dresses in mid-weight fabrics are too casual for the occasion. So I am carefully scrutinizing fabric content and type, and am better informed to do so now. Looking forward to the next video on this topic; TFP!
Great video! Tweeds and woollen garments are great for winter wear. Justine would you please consider a video about wet weather gear? I’ve spent hours viewing waterproof coats and there is such a huge diversity in fabrics and prices. I am looking for something to keep me dry, without having to use an umbrella, when walking the dog and also when visiting areas I cannot drive.
Have you considered a rain cape? I'm an 'a little rain can't faze me' type of person myself and I found them by far the most practical and economical option. They keep you completely dry and there's no issue with swetting, since they only hang loosely over your clothes. And if you're on your way somewhere you can simply take them off and fold them together once you've arrived or it stops raining - and you're still wearing a normal jacket or coat or whatever under it. And they are windproof...which is also nice in lousy weather. I opted for a clear cape and it really doesn't look too bad, since you can see the regular clothes through it. There are more fancy onces available, of course...but even those are way less expensive than a good rain coat. I would really only consider buying one of those, if it was for an outdoor sport.
Thank you for your suggestion. I have a clear raincape made by a very known Wellington boot manufacturer; indeed we may even have the same one. A cape is good to stash away in a bag to carry with you, but I’m looking to invest in a good rain coat that can withstand my long coastal walks with my dog. I’ve viewed rubber ones, cotton coats with a waterproof spray, wax..... There is an endless choice of fabrics & styles and not to mention the width berth in prices. I appreciate your response, many thanks! I would appreciate any others from Justine’s followers, particularly if you have bought a very expensive raincoat & if it lived up to your expectations - or if a general cheaper one from a camping type shop exceeded them. I want to get this right rather than end up with several coats that don’t get used.
I love this series already. Please consider comparing the different textures of winter sweaters (like: do I need Mohair? Cashmere? Will Viscose do the job as well? etc.) Thank you so much for your time and knowledge!

Ooooh, really Justine, I’m a “granny” knitting on two needles, haha 😄 I can’t keep out of haberdasheries, I’ve got to get my hands on all the yarns - so many different fabrics and colours these days! I’ve got three unfinished knitting projects on the go just now, what bliss!! Thank you very much for your videos, I learn a lot from them.
hahaha have you ever tried to knit on a "manual" knitting machine, with a shuttle you push back and forth? You can find used ones on EBay. I find they are a great compromise between "touching" the material you're working with and saving hours. It also allows for pattern experimentation - in an easier way than when you have only 2 needles. If you try that, let me know how you like it!
Justine Leconte officiel You would think that I would use a manual knitting machine, since I have one knitting project that I’ve had on the needles for about 10 years; a school cardigan for my daughter. She was about my elbow height when I started but now she’s taller than I am, so it probably won’t fit! But that’s my absolutely worse case of knitting abandonment, I can knit fairly quickly (providing I get on with it) and my tension is ok. There’s nothing worse than a floppy and slack hand knit is there! But yes, I wouldn’t mind trying a machine, I imagine they would produce a good result with fairisle and intarsia patterns.
I am taking a 3d art class and a lot of the class has to do with knowing and imagining how the material will look on a certain piece. Its been such a challenge. So when I watch this video I have an appreciate about what I could learn. I am super excited about this series. Can't wait! Justine I love your videos!

thank you so much for this video! i just found a website called everpress. they print designs of independent designers on tshirts and jumpers and sell them (the idea sounds pretty cool and their tshirts also look pretty cool, i think). BUT, i read some reviews from people who weren't happy with the quality of their tshirt as the company uses different types of garments (different weights). everyone can look them up and it is labelled which tshirt has which quality, but for someone who doesn't know any of that stuff, it's hard to imagine, what a tshirt with different grams would look like. so, thanks again for this super helpful video!!! hopefully, i can make the right choice now :)

I love this type of videos! And you make them so informative & educating yet in a really easy to grasp manner. Thank you! Is it possible to ask a question? I have noticed the fashion industry in general (or ever?) doesn't pre-wash fabrics before sewing garments. That is really frustrating because even when following care label instructions on proper washing etc most fabrics shrink (by a few percent). Sometimes certain fabrics shrink all over, sometimes only on the length (thus changing the proportions of the garment a bit). Is it possible to know, from something, for example if a fabric is knitted or woven (apart from/and or fabric material) how that type of fabric will shrink/behave? Are there perhaps even certain brands of clothing, or types of fabrics that always come/are sold pre washed? Perhaps you have already planned to mention this? If not, I would love it if you did include a section on fabrics reactions to washing in this series! Not washing tips in general, but rather down to this detailed fabric properties level! :-) Thank you again for great content!
Have you ever thought about building up your wardrobe by yourself? I mean, for example for the capsule wardrobe you're creating you described quite precisely the type of clothes you wanted/needed , so if finding them gets harder, have you considered sowing them yourself? That way you could have exactly what you want! I've always wanted to create some pieces for myself since finding them it's sometimes almost impossible..

@@Tankervoy I didn't catch something for the heavyweight fabrics (maybe over 240g?), but for the rest: 140g = lightweight, 180-200g = midweight

There are more fancy onces available, of course...but even those are way less expensive than a good rain coat. I would really only consider buying one of those, if it was for an outdoor sport.
Thank you for your suggestion. I have a clear raincape made by a very known Wellington boot manufacturer; indeed we may even have the same one. A cape is good to stash away in a bag to carry with you, but I’m looking to invest in a good rain coat that can withstand my long coastal walks with my dog. I’ve viewed rubber ones, cotton coats with a waterproof spray, wax..... There is an endless choice of fabrics & styles and not to mention the width berth in prices. I appreciate your response, many thanks! I would appreciate any others from Justine’s followers, particularly if you have bought a very expensive raincoat & if it lived up to your expectations - or if a general cheaper one from a camping type shop exceeded them. I want to get this right rather than end up with several coats that don’t get used.

hahaha have you ever tried to knit on a "manual" knitting machine, with a shuttle you push back and forth? You can find used ones on EBay. I find they are a great compromise between "touching" the material you're working with and saving hours. It also allows for pattern experimentation - in an easier way than when you have only 2 needles. If you try that, let me know how you like it!

She was about my elbow height when I started but now she’s taller than I am, so it probably won’t fit!
But that’s my absolutely worse case of knitting abandonment, I can knit fairly quickly (providing I get on with it) and my tension is ok. There’s nothing worse than a floppy and slack hand knit is there!
But yes, I wouldn’t mind trying a machine, I imagine they would produce a good result with fairisle and intarsia patterns.

I am taking a 3d art class and a lot of the class has to do with knowing and imagining how the material will look on a certain piece. Its been such a challenge. thank you so much for this video! i just found a website called everpress. they print designs of independent designers on tshirts and jumpers and sell them (the idea sounds pretty cool and their tshirts also look pretty cool, i think). BUT, i read some reviews from people who weren't happy with the quality of their tshirt as the company uses different types of garments (different weights). everyone can look them up and it is labelled which tshirt has which quality, but for someone who doesn't know any of that stuff, it's hard to imagine, what a tshirt with different grams would look like. so, thanks again for this super helpful video!!! hopefully, i can make the right choice now :)

I have very sensitive skin and it gets itchy and red with some types of fabric, maybe you could talk about that in a future video? About the fabrics that are more and less likely to give you allergies, etc...

I have noticed the fashion industry in general (or ever?) doesn't pre-wash fabrics before sewing garments. That is really frustrating because even when following care label instructions on proper washing etc most fabrics shrink (by a few percent). Sometimes certain fabrics shrink all over, sometimes only on the length (thus changing the proportions of the garment a bit). Is it possible to know, from something, for example if a fabric is knitted or woven (apart from/and or fabric material) how that type of fabric will shrink/behave? Are there perhaps even certain brands of clothing, or types of fabrics that always come/are sold pre washed?
Perhaps you have already planned to mention this? If not, I would love it if you did include a section on fabrics reactions to washing in this series! Not washing tips in general, but rather down to this detailed fabric properties level! :-)

Have you ever thought about building up your wardrobe by yourself? I mean, for example for the capsule wardrobe you're creating you described quite precisely the type of clothes you wanted/needed , so if finding them gets harder, have you considered sowing them yourself? That way you could have exactly what you want! I've always wanted to create some pieces for myself since finding them it's sometimes almost impossible..
