  • This video is another very short video from my Oxford Insights collection.
What was the inspiration for the wardrobe door in the wonderful Narnia tales, particularly The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, written by Oxford University academic C S Lewis? Theories abound but the door into Brasenose College offices is a favourite. It is immediately opposite St Mary the Virgin Church, often called the University Church and has the right ingredients including a lion and two golden fauns. The door is also adjacent to an ornate streetlamp in Radcliffe Square which might have been the inspiration for the bright light seen by Lucy as she stepped into Narnia and thus strengthens the case for the door. In this video you will see the door and its location next to the church. You will also see a much more mundane alternative located in The Kilns where Lewis resided for much of his life in Oxford, particularly during his long period as a fellow of Magdalen College.

The carving on the door is surely a Green Man with leaves coming from his mouth, not a lion with a thick mane?
