Every major brand in the music industry has that one product that made them who they are today. Fender has the Telecaster. Gibson has the Les Paul. Martin has the D-28. There's something that feels and sounds intrinsically correct with this instrument, and Martin has retained that aspect of their legendary guitar while adding more contemporary innovations.
Which one of the two modern classics will be the right one for you?

Fo the viewers having trouble telling the difference between guitars: Having a graphic on screen say which is which would be helpful , but you can tell the difference with the inlays. The D28 dots show up a lot more on screen than the HD28 diamonds.

Once it was pointed out the dots on the front board to tell the difference between the two then I could know the difference. But putting a title up on each one would've made it easier, only common sense and standard production technique. I prefer the added definition in the mid range of the HD 28E. If you're recording it will make the guitar stand out a little bit better in the mix.

HD is herringbone dreadnought. The D28 was initially that. A scallop braced dreadnought with herringbone trim. During the war herringbone wasn't available as it came from Germany and was expensive, at the same time they stopped scalloping the braces to cut down on costs, thus the modern day d28 was born. Of course many people missed the original specs, so martin brought it back. Both have coexisted in the lineup ever since. Essentially the hd28 is what the original was, and if you go back even further in history the ditson model made by martin and sold through Ditson was a 12 fret dreadnought. 😊

Like the D28 a lot. When you have them both playing in the shop, the HD might impress you more (more bass, louder …). But the sound of the D28 reimagined series is something special. It‘s a sound that you don‘t find that often as most builders tend to follow the HD concept (forward shifted scalloped bracing). The D28 might appear in the beginning stiffer, but it has a more complex tone. A great guitar.

HI. Unfortunately you forgot to mark the guitars to recognize while playing them which was the D 28 and which the HD. Personally I recognize that I like one more than the other but I can't recognize them.

Great explanation and demo. I heard that Martin went to the non-scalloped because they felt it was a stronger build for the aggressive flatpickers. The more direct sound of the non-scalloped fits bluegrass too. I like both. Depends on what I am playing.

The volume is biggest difference to me. I had a D28 and a HD28. The scalloped forward shifted bracing makes a louder guitar. You just touch the strings and it booms. I love that

I cannot hear much difference in the tonal complexity of the two guitars..........The only thing I heard that separated the two for me was when the HD28 was played it sounded like someone pushed in the stereo button to the on position and it became more amplified.......a little Hi Fi vs low Fi if you will!

Nice review, except you really should have put a lower 3rd with which guitar you were playing.

The D-28 has the large dots for fret markers and the HD-28 has the smaller inlays for fret markers. It’s easy to tell the difference.

I’m in my seventies now, and have some visual impairments, so, for myself, and others, it is not as easy to visually distinguish one guitar, from the other.

Can't believe that the HD-28 is now over $1K more than what I paid in 2007. I'm a fan of the HD sound. The post-war D sound is perfect for bluegrass though.

Hello Ian. Bought a HD28 today in Holland. (TFOA) -A used one from 2022. Nothing changed since 2022 on the HD28 correct? Should be same as the 2024/2025?

I've watched boat loads of comparisons between these classics. You did a great job of capturing the projection of the HD 28. Comparing the Baggs Anthem that I haven't demoed vs the K&K in my D18? I'd like to hear what you would prefer probably having compared the two yourself? Thanks

Hi! Thank you, glad you enjoyed the comparison. Not so sure we've tried those two pickup systems, but it'd definitely make an interesting comparison video.

Hi Sebastian, I recently bought HD28 after listening to a lot of reviews. I like the tone and resonance a lot, but when I play some notes using my thumb, it just dies out very untimely, almost sounds like a thump. It is prominent on E notes and other notes closer to it on the lower strings, like 12th fret on 6th string, 7th fret on 5th string and 2nd fret on 3rd string. What is it? Could it be fixed any way? I also have same problem with another guitar I own called Merida SPOMCES with solid cedar top, but it is mostly lower G notes and notes around it. I spent a fortune (for me at least) on HD28, but I am a bit disheartened with it. The problem is I got it through a friend in the USA here in another side of the world, and I can't go back to the store to check if it was only my guitar's issue. A luthier here told me about Merdia that it happend because of high resonance of the note and the top just dampens it. Could be the same with the HD28 too? 😢 I would appreciate your any thoughts about it.

Hey! I'd recommend you have a professional technician check it out. There's a chance the instrument might have some issues, but most likely it has to do with the set up.

The neck is a lot thicker on my D28. That's the first thing you notice. The next thing is sound quality: it's like a piano best describes it. The notes are clearer and sustain way longer. You hear a much wider sound variation from Bass to Treble which makes it perfect for fingerstyle. They aren't cheap though....but you can instantly hear the extra cost 🙂 @@phreak1118
