I love Rihanna's voice...she has this smoky, wispy voice that sounds good with any genre. I think that's her strong point...she has the kind of voice that can sell anything. She's goes through so many styles and genres and never loses her audience which is rare. For example, I prefer Beyonces R&B stuff to her pop hits (MM&I vs Single Ladies), with Nicki I prefer her hip hop stuff to her pop hits. With Rihanna I think her songs retain its quality from either side of pop or urban/R&B. She's an average singer though who could give so much more but then it really wouldn't be Rihanna anymore. Part of her appeal or brand is that she's "authentic", not some strict perfectionist with no identity. I get the impression that singing for her, like fashion, are tools to express her personality and not something to master which takes the fun and passion out of it.
MikeJMCarey93 But that doesn't make sense to me. Authenticity and striving towards improving ones self as you called "strict perfectionalist" aren't contradictory. Art is expression, but some artists see it as a money making hobby and others are so passionate about it that it consumes their entire existence. Aiming for excellence doesn't strip one of their identity. Just because an artist chooses to work hard at their talent and skill doesn't remove a sense of distinction and personality from their art. That's a very narrow mindset to categorise perfectionalists under. And it's funny you said it removes the fun and passion out of it. Art is fun but to those artists who dedicate all their lives to it, it's pain, anger, sorrow, grief, ugly, beautiful, fulfilling, lonely. Artists who seriously engulf themselves in not merely making a cute or edgy single and wearing the latest fashions aren't less passionate, they're even more. For them music isn't a cute hobby or a job it's their lives, their reason for breathing, their existences. Sounds dramatic but that's how some deeply dedicated and passionate perfectionists feel. No matter their moods, physical illness, circumstances they're willing to go on stage and give the audience 100% of their best performance like its their last. That's taking passion to another level that most artists can't reach. Consistency. Sorry for the rant but I just felt like all those artists who actually tie time and effort to implement technique and proper skill with their authentic personal emotions and experiences shouldn't be disregarded as strict ppl with no identity. They still posses identity but it's just more intense than a laid back artist who in purely for the fun of it.
Funke Oduwole I agree with everything that you wrote, I can't believe I just read all of it, but I agree 100% with everything word for word...... I believe ppl like the original post, tend to make excuses for ppl like Rihanna who is very lazy and doesn't put in the work... I do believe she has lots of potential to be a great artist, but she's too lazy to care and put in the work. Hopefully she will get it together.
Dawn is the future man. I love her vocal choices-very eclectic yet soulful. And she's working on a movie now. She's always surprising her fans with new shit.
Yes. She is! I heard about the movie. I make sure to that up-to-date on my girl. She's pretty much my inspiration. I agree on her voice, and it has grown so much. She has one of the most creative/electic and versatile vocal styles, and a very large vocal range. Gionni Crawford
I love that song, that's like my fave vocal song by her! Her vocals on "Titan" too. That E5 she belted and mixed so effortless. Live at the Apple event for Blackheart she actually belted a note higher, an F5, very strong. I love her vocals on "Rage" too on DK3, it shows lots of versatility of her voice and how it can fit different styles, that and "Cali Sun." Other showsing of versatility "Noir", "The Deep", "Goldenheart", "Warfaire." It goes on and on, lol.
You're totally right, I have a small voice too, my voice is thin, and my vocal coah always told me, if you have a small voice you have to support it more, and I think that's what she's lacking. Great analysis. I love your videos dileesa.
Haha, heads up! Dileesa is not a big fan of Amy Winehouse's voice. She really likes her tone, but doesn't think she's a singer singer. At least, that's what I remember she said about her in one of her streams. I'd like to see a vocal analysis too.
Jessica Trentwood hmmm, thats why she's been ignoring me lol. But I love Amy's voice sooo much, her live performances weren't alway so good, but she was still amazing!
Dapheny Pierre Same here. I believe that Dileesa just hasn't heard a lot of Amy. I also felt the same when I had only heard Rehab. Amy was a singer that sang from heart and had music in her blood. Her early live performances are spot on. You know..back when she wasn't always high and/or severely depressed. I wish she had the chance to make more music.
great analysis, however i think she's a lyric mezzo. i think the biggest problem with her voice is that she's insecure about it. I always say there's two versions of her voice, the robyn voice and the rihanna voice. the robyn voice is what she's insecure about because it's big per se, but it's what sounds best. it's warm, lower and requires her to focus on her singing. then there's the rihanna voice - it's stylized, swanky, nasal and lazy. the rihanna voice is easier and when manipulated properly it not only produces a bigger sound but sounds good. however, most times we get it at the lazy/nasal level. I think in her head, which is where the insecurities come from, the Robyn voice isnt enough. it's not big enough nor expressive enough, but in reality it's MILES better. like you said, if she was to spend at least a year training vocally and fall in love with the Robyn voice she'd be undeniable.
Though there are many aspects of your videos I appreciate, the one thing that always stands out is the thoughtfulness you'll give to your analyses. You were, um, very charitable toward Rihanna's "singing."
Rihanna is a studio artist. Most of her live performances are very lack luster. I actually like her but it's frustrating to me that she doesn't take her vocal progress seriously. 😕
I agree with your analysis, though I don’t think her voice is small. Also, I don’t think that every performance in every song must be about big notes. Her voice is powerful enough. I believe her voice has grown bigger in 2022 than it was in 2005-2008.
Omg.....You're an islander. Where are you from? I'm from the Caribbean too. I would really love for you to do Tori Kelly and Jojo if you have the time. Love your videos
Love it.. Love the Jesse j too.. Could you do some country guys? Hank Williams jr... Then and now since he's changed a lot... Maybe Dean Martin too ❤️😘
Good video as always Dileesa! I'm not a huge fan of Rihanna but I do like some of her songs though like Take a Bow and Diamonds and whatnot. I agree with you when you said that her voice is small cuz I also think that she doesn't have a very big voice as well but she's still a soprano nonetheless.
Great video I love watch your vocal analysis and you a phenomenal singer yourself huge fan can't wait for the album .You should do a video on Countess Vaughn.
Rihanna is a dope dope vocalist mam. She's not a respectable singer because of marketing. Not because she can't sing.....shes been doing this for over ten years and I do believe we have seen the worst of her and she's only gotten better. While doing sold out shows across the world while keeping a pretty solid technique. I think she's become a really really strong fabulous singer especially in her mid register. Now I would love to hear her sing "higher" live
West African**....we sound very different in the East and South lol. Anyway, I love Rihanna's voice and I just wish she had great technique and focus to maximize on her potential

Sometimes it's powerful .other Times tired. And i really wanna improve my head voice . Ah and my voice cracks too much . I'v never smooked neither drinked .
I agree! Especially about her being a soubrette. Would you possibly analyze Toni Braxton? I can never tell if she sing high or low because her tone is dark and soft at the same time lol. I'd love to hear your thoughts of Gaga's national anthem and how people said it was second best to Whitney lol.
***** Yeah, there were parts that I thought were weird as hell lol. Some of it felt a little over the top but her technique was pretty good tbh. Definitely one of the best renditions in recent years.
can you do a vocal analysis on pink l suggest the songs you can listen to nobody knows there you go family portrait all we are blow me one last kiss fuckin perfect.
These comments got me weak! Anyways, Rihanna *CAN* sing but it ain't much to rave about. Her range, technique, vocal stamina, power & just overall vocal talent is below average, period. And she knows it too. That's why she ain't worried about nothing. Rih knows her saving grace (besides her BEAUTIFUL face/body) is that vocal tonal quality. Her tone is what really saves her, she has this unique Caribbean pop addictive tonal quality, that literally fits like a glove on most radio pop driven songs. If you take away her tone ... There's literally nothing really there. And her career would be over. Shoot, I'm not gon' lie... Rihanna's songs have literally been the soundtrack of my life for the past 10 years. She's legit the biggest pop act (in terms of hit singles) of my generation. Her music & unique voice is so addictive. But technically, vocally speaking, she ain't worth a damn. Yes, she'll have a good vocal performance here & there *(which would be considered average for an actual top notch vocalist like Beyonka)* but that shit ain't nothing. Her technique & consistency level sucks. Don't nobody check for Rihanna for actual top notch vocals, period. Great analysis Dileesa!
What comments? Most of the comments were simply bashing her or calling her average and below just like you did. It seems like you want the hate to be more than what it is.
If Rihanna’s vocals are below average then what tf does that make the rest of these white female pop singers? Rihanna is better than a good majority of them.
@@aubrey_reignz5484 I mean, she's not better than Ariana Grande, Tori Kelly, Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Pink etc... Those women can all sing better than Rihanna. But Rihanna is unique.
can you do a vocal analysis of Whitney Houston "Early career" please listen to her song "Take me to your heart" " still my man" i feel like she had a very big range
Dileesa, I love your vocal analyses! I was wondering: I know it's a task, since there aren't many live performances out there and she forces her voice to be something it isn't, but could you do a vocal analysis on Britney Spears' voice? I'd be really interested to see how you feel about her voice!
she is not a lyric soprano at all like you say...her and britney spears are both soubrettes. have you done a vocal analysis on britney? love your channel
I disagree completely - have you heard her live performances of love on the brain? Or her other ballads? Your analysis is applicable to her 2012 era only
That's exactly what I was thinking!! Her voice is too small to be a lyric and she has a hard time hitting higher notes. She does seem like a soubrette...
omg....like as a vocalist analyzing another vocalist such as Rihanna's....do you do your research fully...and I'm being so honest...rih has grown soo much...and not only that but she's a world touring artist which is a lot different than someone who sings at gigs every so often.. thats wear and tear on the voice
"Wear and tear on the voice" lol. You talk as if Rihanna's discography is vocally demanding enough to take a real toll on her voice. It is, as Dileesa and others have said, because she seems to be lazy or not know/care about technique and because she seems to love smoking too much weed. There never has been anything above average about her voice or vocal ability. Yes, she has shown she has some quite good vocal performances recently but nothing out of the ordinary.
Why does her voice have to be big to be good? You all constantly hawk for people who sound like Beyoncé. And it's obvious that most of you don't dedicate any real time to see her best performances. You take her worst clips and use them to determine what you think of her, lol. But at the end of the day, her fans hear the real power in her voice. You brainless powerhouse stans can keep your generic blowhorns, we can enjoy our soulful, raspy queen.
I love this one. My only real issue is that I've watched all of your analysis videos. So now I'm thirsty and waiting for the next one. Why must you have a life outside of making videos for us? Ugh.

I agree-Rihanna's tone is interesting. Unfortunately for me it stops there. I'm interested in your analysis of Dawn Richard's voice.

Can you please do Ashanti vocal anaylsis ?
I love Rihanna, she's one of my favourites. I would love to learn more about "soubrette".
Though there are many aspects of your videos I appreciate, the one thing that always stands out is the thoughtfulness you'll give to your analyses. You were, um, very charitable toward Rihanna's "singing."
I concur, TFS!
Your points are well supported. Rihanna works her instrument, but, if she wants it, she could be better. Additonal vocal training would not hurt.

rocachick860 she can sing live she have amazing performed she just needs a couch but i think she does not care about music
Karen Arzu stfu
I totally agree with you... I have yet to find a live performance of "Love on the Brain" that really does justice to this gorgeous song.
um the Billboard performance of LOTB is amazing
Her early days were great before the smoking but she didn’t give her voice a chance
I think it's natural talent, she hasn't taken any vocal lessions
I love your comments
very agree you Dilessa 👍
She's too laid back and lazy to care about technique. And I believe she smokes
Yikes 😁
She smokes weed like crazy, but she doesn't smoke cigarettes.
I've actually seen her smoke cigarettes before a show to get the raspy quality in her voice. It is or used to be a pre-show ritual.
D: that's bad!!!!
+CreoleAdonis used to be. she only smokes weed now.
Can you do a video on how such singers as Brandy and Beyonce can sing and dance at the same time?
Can u do a vocal analysis on mya please please please

What's wrong with a small voice??
Exactly. Hating asses.

I thought she was a mezzo. It seems that even mezzo sopranos are really rare phenomena.
Ivelina Dobreva she lacks way too much ease in her upper register to be a soprano. Also her mid range until A4 is where she feels comfortable. Imo

It is, as Dileesa and others have said, because she seems to be lazy or not know/care about technique and because she seems to love smoking too much weed. There never has been anything above average about her voice or vocal ability. Yes, she has shown she has some quite good vocal performances recently but nothing out of the ordinary.
I think Rihanna is a Dugazon, a darker colored soubrette.
Just to correct you Rihanna is a lyric mezzo not a soprano
Yeah, I agree. Dileesa herself said that female singerswhose voices blossom at a C5 are mezzos and that's Rihanna.
Rihanna is not a mezzo. You think everyone is a mezzo 🙄
You brainless powerhouse stans can keep your generic blowhorns, we can enjoy our soulful, raspy queen.
she doesn’t have power in her voice because if she did you would hear air she wouldn’t lack live love her though
I love this one. My only real issue is that I've watched all of your analysis videos. So now I'm thirsty and waiting for the next one. Why must you have a life outside of making videos for us? Ugh.
HAHAHAHAHA!!! thanks for watching!!
