    Damn I'm a lamb, but y'all are mean. She is just a vocal coach doing an analysis. Like a doctor giving you her opinion. Sit down with the rudeness and hate. Damn. I love her too, but some things she said are spot on. Like the range things.YES, we all know she has proven to hit 5.2 octaves over the past 26 years BUT she hasn't proven at any given time...that she could do that in one night. Not saying she can't, but she hasn't done it but 4.5 octaves on any given night is still very impressive is it not? But it was still a great opinion and I'd definitely take singing lessons from this girl ,if I could afford her, lol because this was a real vocal analysis. Even though I do love Mariah and she is rehabilitating to an extent. She isn't making all sacrifices for her voice but it is what is it and she is still serving great performances. Maybe not like 1996 but let's live in 2016 because you can still hear the beautiful voice && creativity 😍

    Lucky for Mariah she has built up such a fan base and respect. She can tour off of her reputation, and a fair amount of lipsyning. She does not have to rebuild stamina, or get back to a certain point. She is up there with Whitney, people will love her no matter what.

      Isaac Ortiz WH's voice was not completely shot after 94, it was out of it's prime after 95/96 but to say it was completely shot is a gross exaggeration. Given her choices regarding drugs it's not surprising that happened. It's not normal for a voice to deteriorate that quickly. Using WH as an example is not good because she was a drug addict.

    Mariah came out in 1990. I agree with everything you said even the part about her regaining up to 80% of her voice. I have been watching recent live performances of her - check out 2016 live performances...she is sounding much better. She sounds really good...but I will say that her style is a bit different. In her prime, Mariah was very technical and had the ability to sing extremely well from a technical perspective. That is one of the qualities that isolated her from a lot of other female singers that sing in a more gospel / emotional style...but may not have been as technically skilled as Mariah Carey. However, in these 2016 live performances, Mariah is free styling more and not following a technical path as much. I feel that the reason is because it is much more challenging to sing a song that requires a lot of technical ability as oppose to just letting your voice go and doing whatever you want. Since Mariah has lost "some" of her voice, this new style is a very clever strategy on her part. She proves that she can still sing very well and yet she does not have to put the pressure on herself to sing a challenging song to technical perfection. People who don't know a lot about singing will never even notice. 2 perfect examples of this would be to watch the 2016 live performance of "Thank God I found you" - Mariah sounds good but she is just doing her own thing - not having to sustain certain notes for a specific time or required to sing the song a certain way. Although she sounded fine, there are a lot of other female soul singers that are capable of giving a performance similar to that. Now go back and watch the 1990 live performance of "Vanishing" from Saturday night live. The 1990 performance was very technical and flawlessly executed. Performances like that are what made Mariah Carey special. I don't know of any other female singer in pop music that has given a performance so perfect. Her timing, her tone...the way she sustained her notes and made certain transitions...unbelievable. If you can, please try to reference those two performances and then reply to my comment, and thank you so much for you analysis!

      I agree with everything you said. Of course because of age, you will lose endurance and to keep up with her technically difficult songs. Mariah's songs are very tiring to sing, notes at peak are going up and down, no time to catch air and multi layers of sounds, whispery, low, belt, head, chest and whistle, all in one measure. That's why she needs to make sure she has pre-recorded tracks in parts where she does not need to put a lot of effort.
      also, she doesn't care. she basically just shows up on concerts with no effort at all. im sure on a good day, she can still hit all of her songs, but a good day isn't everyday. :)

    I agree with you on a lot of things except the whistle register since Mariah is always fully relaxed with singing in whistle. It really is an authentic part of her voice. Today she has ease in the 6th octave, before 2010 she had perfect ease in the 7th octave and during her prime she could sing and vocalize off the piano.

    *Many people on here are overlooking the obvious: Singing with excess breath is simply not good for the voice. Mariah Carey sings with excess breath in her whistle register and 'whisper' voice far too much. The proper healthy way to sing those high 'whistle tones' is the one used by classical coloratura sopranos like Ingeborg Hallstein and company; as well as classically trained mainstream singers like Maureen McGovern and Debelah Morgan. Mariah's use/abuse of the 'false cord function', which involves the corrosive leaking of excess breath in the production of those 'airy' tones is a major contributory factor to her vocal decline over the years.*

    • @SKMRify
      @SKMRify 7 років тому +6

      Starfire: It is sad, indeed. Can you imagine what she would sound like without a damaged voice? Even with her inconsistency her resonance up to G5 (at times) is rivaled only by the likes of Lara Fabian and Vanessa Amorosi; while her expertise in the whistle register will probably never be surpassed.

      @@crmtery3253 the so called "whisper register" (not a register, but critics called called styling that) of Mariah Carey is a heady mixed voice with falsetto like airiness. I think I sounds so good, because she has nodules, so her voice naturally falls there, you can hear the air escaping even when she talks sometimes. I love the sound, especially in unison/harmonies, but I think she should've never used it outside of studio, it's just too drying and too risky when you have to switch to full voice in the same song.

  • @YohaBroha90
    @YohaBroha90 8 років тому +23

    Okay, let me start off by saying that Mariah Carey's voice is very unusual(and according to her it's also immensely sensitive to outside elements). Which is why she is always a go to singer, vocal coaches like to reference. In regards to vocal discussions and technique. Her vocal range through her career has fully spanned 5 octaves(BbA7-A7 during her 1993 Musicbox tour era and F2 during her 1999-2000 Rainbow to Emancipation eras)and as of 2015 it was still 5 octaves F2-E7. Mariah recorded her self titled debut album "Mariah Carey" in 1988 and released it in 1990. Also another key thing to point out, is that Mariah ever since she first started doing interviews. Has always stated that she has vocal nodules and has had them since she was a little kid. It's why her speaking voice is usually so raspy. Her speaking voice alone usually sits in the upper third octave. She's hit B2 simply by talking normally to people.
    Now Mariah's voice prior to her Merry Christmas/Daydream era(end of 1994-1995) was often shaky and her E5s-F5s were sometimes unsupported. She did so many runs, trills, and crescendos while performing. That she was often able to quickly cover them up. Mariah's voice has always had some level of inconsistency to it. However, she had far more peaks throughout her career that it often went unnoticed until more recent years.
    During the end of 1994 through 1995. Her voice did a reversal and became higher and more youthful, instead of lowering. This is because her singing technique changed. She started mixing and singing in her mask a lot more. Which really freed up belting in her upper chest register. If you listen to her first album vs MusicBox you will notice a difference. Her voice went from a warm low sultry tone with raspy undertones to a bright and colorful sound with upper raspy overtones. On through to her Butterfly-Rainbow(1997-1999) albums her voice matured and the raspy tone that was always in her voice became more apparent. She learned to get more creative with her notes and transitions since her top notes werent as easy to hit before her vocal maturity set in.
    Continuing further we have the Glitter and Charmbracelet eras(2001-2004). These eras were actually her best vocal eras, in terms of her ability to property do an effortless mix, on key transitional notes, expansion of her lower register, and better consistent control of her whistle register. Her D5s-E5s were more supported and she learned how to properly lay a texture on notes while in styling such as legato and staccato.
    Late Emancipation of Mimi/E=MC2 eras(2005-2008), made her vocal decline more apparent(especially after the success and performances of We Belong Together). These eras are when that raspiness in her voice almost took over. You could also easily her the fatigue in her voice with every other note she sang. Although, her second Christmas album Merry Christmas II You was a great era for her. I am only guessing due to the lack of alcohol? Her voice was able to recover some from that damage. Making it less of an effort for her to float through her registers with ease.
    Lastly, Mariah's breathy register and whistle register have nothing to do with her vocal decline. There are other singers such as Minnie Riperton, Chante Moore, Betty Wright, and Lisa Fischer who also used/use those techniques and their voices didnt decline solely from it. Those two registers are simply a natural part of her voice. At the beginning of her career Mariah was an RnB singer who melodically understood how to become a cross platform artist. Now at 46, I look at her as more of a jazz singer who has the understanding, artistry, and talent to cover multiple melodic genres. She has learned to compensate for some of her vocal loss. As of recent 2016 some areas of her voice are improving. Such as her vibrato, supported chest notes, and her head voice.
    The end verdict of where I personally think her vocal damage has come from is:
    -Her vocal nodules(Which will continue to get worse as she ages because they are callouses on the vocal chords. This is also the biggest contributor to her vocal inconsistencies over her career. Although, the surgery to remove them is way too risky)
    - Overexertion of her singing voice without proper breaks(Such as releasing an album every single year of the 90s and sometimes singing above the key of the album track)
    - Lack of a PROPER vocal coach(I think some of her vocal fatigue would go away and some of her endurance would come back if she hired a proper coach. Meaning one who isnt her friend and is her actual coach.)
    -Alcohol(which causes drying of the vocal chords which causes damage along with her nodules)
    - Lack of proper vocal rest(she admits she is not as stern on this as she use to be due to her schedule and now kids)
    - Lip Syncing(Mariah is odd. When she lip syncs, instead of just mouthing to the words. She actually pushes out air while doing it. Which causes this uncontrolled whistling noise over the track she is lipping to. That pushing of unnecessary air without vocal production is also causing damage.)
    -Age(Mariah will never have her exact tone of her 18 year old self or even her 24 year old self. That is simply not how our voices work as human beings. She is 46 years old and some of that damage she has is there to stay. Even vocalists like Stevie Wonder, Pattie Labelle and Celine Dion have clear vocal declines vs their younger selves. It's a reality all singers must face)

      @@Bmillz95 . I don't think the commenter was discussing Dileesa's points, rather expanding them and wrote a very informed, in depth analysis, including points that most people miss or ignore. A lot of people don't know that she had nodules before the fame and was bound to either risk surgery or burn out sooner or later. People are so adamant about repeating how she lost her voice in Butterfly Era, they completely ignore the second peak she had, which few big in demand artists can achieve after their voice is compromised.

    • @ocandro
      @ocandro 5 років тому

      As for the top comment, the person mentions few singers who sing in flageolet, not whistle or use both interchangeably, so we can't really compare them. However properly sung, true whistle tones are actually achieved by relaxing the muscles and aren't painful or straining in any way, unless airy, which sadly is Mariah's vocal addiction.
      As for the reasons of decline, I would add:
      - stress! People forget that body is the instrument of a vocalist and constant stress - nasty divorce with vengeful Tommy, the pressure of the spotlight, miscarriage, constant betrayals, heartbreaks, miscarriage and bipolar disorder surely do affect the physical health as well.
      - hormones and meds she took to get pregnant and to manage bipolar disorder are very harmful for the voice (all psychiatric drugs are extremely drying)
      - the pregnancy itself tends to make a voice thicker and lower in many cases and she had twins
      - I would liken the undersinging Dileesa mentions to standing next to a fan or a blow dryer with your mouth open. Besides, it's simply hard to keep switching between closure and lack thereof within the song.
      By the way her overworking, not getting enough sleep/rest and drinking have to be big factors, because her voice was beautiful and healthy during the pregnancy around 2010, aside from understandable breathing problems.

      Isaac Ortiz Tone is a matter of taste, technique is a matter of fact. Everyone from Annie Lennox to Toni Braxton have ignorantly been called men at times, doesn't mean they aren't talented.

    • @noreexic
      @noreexic 8 років тому +2

      Isaac Ortiz You're confusing having a powerful voice with being a better singer. That's a facile argument. Lennox has always been a great vocalist who could play around with runs and rifts while maintaining the structure of a song i.e, she sang in good taste . Her head voice and what she can do with it is also very high quality as can be heard in the backgrounds of Must Be Talking To An Angel .It's also pretty unfair to put greats like WH and MC with someone like Patti Labelle. Labelle was born with a great instrument but like Jessie J ventures too frequently into histrionics and over-singing. I can understand why you love Labelle seeing as how you belong to the cult of high note worshipers instead of looking at the voice as a whole.

    • @noreexic
      @noreexic 8 років тому +2

      Isaac Ortiz
      ''They have to have the power,vocal skills and range along with technique''
      Again all you've done is confuse having a powerful voice with being a better singer. As for vocal skills they are dependent on a healthy technique and level of vocal musicianship that is in good taste. Lennox has both. Range and how large it is does not denote talent. A singer with four octaves is not necessarily better than singer with three.
      ''.Against Celine Dion or Jessie J Annie would get crushed.Especially by Patti lol.''
      Crushed by what criteria? Can she belt as high as these singers? Of course not, she's a contralto and her voice is not built for such things. There's more to singing than belting a loud F5. Again like I said both PAtti and Jessie have lovely voices but they often lose the melody with unnecessary runs and rifts. Celine Dion is very talented, has a great sense of pitch and a beautiful legato, but never has worked to minimize the nasality, and she has sometimes very poor register coordination. I can't say Annie Lennox has the same vocal flaws. I also can't say that it's fair to judge the weakness of a contralto on the strengths of three sopranos. Comparing apples and oranges is fallacious.

    I don't think she is producing whistle notes in that way. Everytime she has talked about whistle notes in interviews, she brings up her nodules, so I think she has been given a freak ability with the way air travels out. And if you see her sing full voice and then transition suddenly to a whistle (see "Vanishing" SNL performance 1990), it's like something unnatural is happening. I mean sometimes she literally sounds like when you blow through a whistle or a recorder and it has something in it or something. If she needs surgery she will likely never elect to have it. I think she has enough vocal talent and enough UA-cam videos of old performances that I'm not necessarily pining for the past. I think a lot of what we see on stage is really a lack of enthusiasm. Even at her most "has been" stage she will always be touring, always be in demand in some part of the WORLD daahling, not even the country. So she's never not singing these songs, and she's a rare artists that has so much material and almost never get to sing their own favorites. You can really hear the routine in it. She resurrected the Emotions intro and surprise! it's one of the most energetic parts of the show. Everything else, on top of having to dodge things, which you're REALLY gonna do when you don't feel like singing something, you can tell it's like when you're in the car driving and you startle yourself b/c you went on autopilot and totally forgot you were driving.

    But what people don't understand is that...Mariah's voice has had many ups and downs. She's sounding better NOW (2016) than what she sounded like in 2000. Many people go off of a couple of bad performances that are broadcast but never see the good performances that she does because no one cares. The popular thing to do these days is say "Mariah Carey lost her voice" or "She can't sing like she used to". Not many people sound the way they did 25 years ago. Mariah's voice and texture changed every two years but her tone stays the same. She was the most agile 6 years AFTER Vision of Love came out. There are many facets to her voice that people don't understand unless they truly are a fan or truly study her technique and gift. Nodules play a factor as well and that's a whole different story.

      idk if i would say mariah developed them from experimenting in the whistle voice. she said that she was able to do them when her voice was so hoarse and tired and she could barely speak but was able to speak in whistle. i believe someway somehow they just developed...idk.... i do think people need to do more research about mariah before trying to sound like experts and "analyzing" her.....

    I believe what Dileesa is saying is just because Mariah can touch on all those notes doesn't mean she can sing comfortably and regularly in that range. Your range doesn't mean ALL the fucking notes you can cover, but the notes you can sing COMFORTABLY in... that's why Mariah is a soprano and not a 'falcon' because singing in her lower register is not as rich or alive as singing in her soprano range. You musically UNEDUCATED people are showing your true colors as mere lambs than anyone objective.

    I agree with what she said that Mariah cant go back to her VOL days voice but she can definitely work on what she have right now. She still have the voice who can outsing the current singers. She have nodules even before she come to the spotlight and I she needs to address that and take a good vocal rest.

      Buduzhi Eligwe You said her range is still intact, I don't think that's a fair statement because notes that she use to hit with ease are now incredibly stifled and raspy. Her attempts at G5s are no longer free or effortless. Her range is not how it used to be.Being able to sporadically hit notes isn't the same as being comfortable hitting them

    People also forget that she's had vocal nodules her entire career, as well as most of her life. Like you said about how nonstop she was working throughout the 90's, it only made things harder on herself that she had vocal nodules and didn't want to risk getting them taken out. Do you think if she had her nodules removed that her voice would be gone or get better? An example of someone who benefited from getting the surgery is Adele. But, others like Julie Andrews were never able to sing again.

    this is inaccurate..because mariah is a true alto. mariah evens states that herself in an magazine article. she has a high range with skill training and dna. even mariah's speaking voice is lower than most. Mariah may be more skilled in her higher range because of her comfortablility and practice. as i'm sure she gets more attention that way. Familiarity with a part of your voice should not be confused with your actual vocal part. Mariah still sounds better than most of the industry. Her voice is still exceptional today as i just saw a video in Las Vegas. Its not all gloom and her vocal career is over. dont paint that picture

  • @biggityboggityboo8775
    @biggityboggityboo8775 8 років тому +1

    I think the real issue with Maria is that she developed nodules. Yeah she says she's had them from childhood but that's really just a cover up for the fact she's got them. Her sudden decline in 97/98 and then continual deterioration can easily be explained by her initially getting nodules during that time.
    Clearly Marian could regain a lot of her voice but I do believe that would need to start with having the nodules removed (if possible) and then vocal rehabilitation afterwards to prioritise lightening her voice and mix to allow for healthy upper register vocals plus not whisper singing any more.
    She was already lightening her mix during her 95/96 tours and you can hear this in her Tokyo performances it's just a shame she didn't let her voice recovery as soon as it started to show signs of being in trouble.

    She never developed STRENGTH in her middle upper range. The Breathy tone ruined her voice. Bad for vocal chords..
    Speech level singing would have really helped to save her voice. Whitney had a very developed middle upper range and because of it she could sing the National Anthem like she did! Amazing voice. I would've liked to hear Mariah with a clear, stronger middle upper voice, only using the breathy singing as an effect like what Whitney Houston use to do.

    Mariah is a singer.... many singers can change their voices from time to time and chose to sing in a way to protect their instrument. However mariah has gI've interviews about why she (Likes) to change it up. Listening to her today, reminds me of of the 90's. I dont get how people say Mariah couldn't sing pass 1998, yea its obvious that she gained a rasp to her voice and her tone got darker. But at the turn of the 2000s she gave multiple solid performances with a matured voice, her live performances honestly started declining after 2008 imo and gained clarity after giving birth in 2012. Her 2013 performances were superb, 2014 was not. But since then her voice has made constant improvements, instead of a declining as some ppl believe. As a fan, I can also note that Mariah's worst vocal condition usually occur when she is mentally and physically drained. 1997-1999 her divorce and constant conflict with label drained her the fuk out;she literally was over working herself to prove she didnt need Tommy's assistrance, 2008-2010 multiple misscarriges, and 2014 divorce and bronchitis.

    You mentioned that Mariah has definitely spanned her voice across 5 octaves but only throughout her entire career and not at a specific time. However, there were times when she did have 5. The emotions album had B2(emotions)-B7(can't let go). And her Me I Am Mariah album had Ab2(The Art Of Letting Go)-Ab7(Heavenly).
    A couple live eras had something very close to 5, most notably Me I Am Mariah (F#2ish 2014-F7 2015), Music Box (B2-A7ish all 1993), and Emotions (C#3ish-A7ish all 1991). I'm gonna make another comment to provide links to where these notes are. I'm on my cell phone and can't go to a different tab right now unfortunately, lol.

Billboard’s Artist of the Decade. Billboard’s Chart Queen. 2nd place in 2012’s Top 100 Greatest Female Vocalist in the WORLD. The FIRST and ONLY artist to send their first 5 singles to #1 on the charts, beating the Jackson 5’s. Guinness World Record’s Songbird Supreme. Queen of the 90’s. 5 vocal octave range. Continuous recieved awards for Best Female Artist in most music genres. The influencer and creator of the Pop and Hip Hop genre mixing movement. Writes ALL her songs. And the reason why artists such as Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and Ariana Grande exists. Even said it themselves. She achieved this all and many more with vocal nodules. She may not have the killer but heavenly voice she use to have before, but who cares? She doesn’t owe the world anything anymore. She has paid her dues, and has contributed the most out of all female artists to the music industry, and now she has the right to live her life lavishly with her hard earned money. All hail the queen of music and talent. Millennial artists could never touch the legacy Mariah has paved for herself and her God given voice.*

    She came out in 1990, she is an alto that can cover notes from a Soprano and she has a measured vocal range of 5 octaves and 2 tones with unmatched agility to transition between registers. Her voice has gotten more metallic because of vocal nodules. Physiologically speaking airy tones don't affect the vocal chords. And drinking can't affect them either because alcohol does not go through the larynx otherwise it would go straight to the lungs. Smoking on the other hand...

    Her whistle tones are executed well. There are just times she does it wrong and doing whistles wrong can greatly damage your voice.

    I believe, Mariah’s issues come from (over time) taking her chest register too high before moving into her mix. AND the stylistic choice she often makes of flipping between chest and airy head voice (falsetto).
    It sounds great. But it’s tricky to navigate for the voice. Her upper mix used to be super supported and crystal clear. But remember... mixed voice is basically head voice with twang in a different placement.
    The airy onset she often chose is not conducive to having a super agile high ‘belty’ mixed voice. A breathy onset blasts the vocal cords with air, which can really make things tricky. Especially with not much rest in between shows etc.
    I believe she could regain much of her former agility and power by retraining and rehabilitating her voice. The first thing to address would be her speaking voice. Also, re-learning how to sing in a pure pianissimo (non-airy) head voice. Then, focus on building resonance back in her mask/mix, rather than pushing musculature/chest to get those big high ‘belty’ notes easily again.
    🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑
    She truly is an amazing vocalist!

      Hey I also think that the falsetto burned her voice out even more. The constant flipping of falsetto to belt and back and forth seems like a really tiring and damaging thing to do if you'll do it long enough and too much

    Mariah carey can hit every note from a A2 to A7 through 2010 to now... she has hit and displayed that she can hit every note within the 5 octave and 2 notes or so above it...Mariah is naturally an alto.. that is how she classified her voice.... the has agility and great runs.... beautiful and powerful lower range, mid range, and upper range....

    I finally got most of my range back after a serious back injury, but it took about 6 years of rest and lots of excellent nutrition, vitamins, herbs, and a lot of "talk fasts". I'd give up talking for 2-3 days per week. The back exercises actually helped my lung capacity.

    Great review Dilessa. You were spot on for the most part. Mariah Carey's voice has always been a force of nature since it excels in every aspect; therefore it could be difficult to classify. But I do agree she has always been a Lyric Soprano w/ coloratura qualities. Now about her whistle register that's just something else. Mariah herself has never been able to fully explain it either. She has so much ease & you can tell that by just hearing the way she articulates up there. And let's NOT forget that she has had vocal nodules since childhood. Which is a huge factor in the declined of her voice. Mariah Carey herself has stated that she had learned to sing "around them". She's definitely had her ups & downs. She's sounding amazing right now. She slayed her European & African Tour this year & she's doing great at her Vegas Residency. I believe she's gone back to her vocal lessons. Hopefully she can take the time to fully take care of that national treasure. Keep up w/ the good work.

    Girl, that is not how Mariah produces her whistles.
    they are effortless and her nodules help drive them. She said when she was little she would wake up and not be able to talk normally (bc nodules) but she could talk in a squeaky voice and that’s how she found her whistle register. Her nodules are very apparent since THE BEGINNING of her career in 1990. that’s why her speaking voice always has been and always will be very hoarse and raspy.
    Singers say it’s easier to execute whistles when their voice is tired/ when they are sick.
    In the Adventures of Mimi (2006) Tour her chest voice is very tired but her whistles are crystal clear and out of this world.
    Check out this video. She sounds so tired when singing but at around 2:25 crazzyyyy whistles

    This is a very good analysis. Yes you are correct, even though she is doing well lately, vocally, she will never have the vocal qualities she had 20 years ago. Its a hood thing that she has an excellent technique. Im a singer too and having a gig every night is not a joke. Proper vocal warm ups, proper vocal placement, not singing song that are not of your range, eating heaLthy food, keeping your body hydrated, enough sleep are the factors to consider in taking care of our voice. Ive watched your videos and it really helps. Thank you for that. Mariah's voice is a treasure.

    I appreciate your honest vocal analysis on Mariah's voice. Your pretty spot on. The only thing I have to add, is that Mariah smoked when she was a teenager and it had caused her voice to deteriorate. She spoke about this in 1996 and how she said God restored 2 octaves after she quit. I think that has been a problem of hers over the years too. They are recurring and have given her trouble in years of her voice. I do believe though a lack of discipline post 1998 has been a the biggest problem. I'm glad to say though in 2016 her voice has been in the best shape it's been in since 2005. Thank you for your honesty!

    i disagree with one thing, her whistle tones are healthy and just a natural part of her voice. They're not dangerous to her bc she has nodules and that is part of the reason why in her case, whistles are easily produced. She's went to a voice docter and he exaplined to her where w normal ppl if they tried to hit that not they'd go into a rasp, but for her (bc of the nodules) she goes into a "solid high tone" aka a high note/whistle note. It's safe for her bc as she's said multiple times when asked ab her whistle tones "it's just a part of" her voice. It comes as naturally as her speaking voice, sometimes easier.

      P.s. I think that she is playing reserve with her voice. 🤔😏 she knows where here money is at. I feel that she will get disciplined again towards the end and go out with a bang. knowing that her whistle could be potentially quite damaging performing it all the time, especially since she tended to belt in her soprano (which is what her fan expect now). that's why she performs most of her rap tone content, a few of her oldies, and at Christmas Time. 😏 she knows what's worth it. I think she's just taking it easy and will come back to smooth it out when it's all said and done! Similar to her holiday tone, maybe with a few fun jams.

    She’s not a soprano. She’s an alto. She can hit soprano notes. She has also described herself as an alto. Not everyone fits the standard categories. Carey has a wider range than most singers, so while she's basically an alto, she can go outside that range without too much trouble.

    I think Mariah went through so many stages with her voice, from the soulful sound of the early 90's to the perfection of her pop voice in 1995-1996, raspy 1997-1998 to awful 2007-2008 plus with all the lipsync, so hard to make a video about her "voice" since she had so many since 1990.

    Great video. The only point of contention is the statements about hitting whistle notes. There's nothing inherently damaging by singing whistle notes. What is damaging is applying pressure to sing the notes. Whistles are supposed to be effortless and with a relaxed voice. I'm 39 and have been singing in them a good 34 years with no issues.

    Don't take offense to this but the question you asked yourself seemed redundant to me. Obviously, she can't have her 20-year-old self's voice when She's 46 after over 20 albums (Remixes and Deluxes included) and the usual wear and tear of an instrument.

      Voices are not like other systems in the body, they get better with age. Edita Gruberova is still singing beautifully and she's reportedly 72. Joyce DiDonato is one of the greatest to ever do it and she claims to be 50. Julie Andrews also. Most of these singers, male and female, claim to be younger to get more mileage out of their careers. Mariah was certainly older than 20 when she first came out, judging by her vocals she was probably 24.

    • @ocandro
      @ocandro 4 роки тому

      @@ThingsILikke best non classical singers still have a less healthy technique than their operatic counterparts and a lot of them have still damaged their voices (though their surgeries and vocal rehabs tend to be kept a secret), but overall it's true that a healthy voice with proper technique and care (avoiding too demanding repertoire, resting etc) should be at its best in 30s and 40s with slight deterioration from 50 onwards. There is nothing natural about Mariah's decline, she'll be 50 this March.

    Dileesa Archer, I just discovered your channel and I'm loving it. Question: You say that she had great technique, then you go on to describe how that technique caused damage down the line. Wouldn't that indicate that she had poor technique? In all my studies and travels, technique is evaluated by the ability to sustain maximum healthy vocal use. But there are a lot of people who disagree.

    • @stone8193
      @stone8193 6 років тому +1

      DeshaunX she had good and bad technique. Like she could sing but then chose to do unhealthy things on top of good technique. Her voice was permanently damaged at an early age, so she never fully could have great technique, as she just compensated for her damage rather than fix it with surgery or rehabilitation. This causes a decline even if her technique was healthy. It's like running on a not fully healed leg with great technique. You'll get by, but there will be a decline. You can hear even in her best years she always a kind of unfocused and airy tone even just belting normally. Her sound was very spread and lacked that core focus of a truly big and healthy voice. It's a sigh of her damage

  • @el616
    @el616 7 років тому

    I love your videos. I'm not sure she uses whistle voice as much as she uses flageolet. I think she has an excellent facility with her flageolet. Whistle voice when you lock down the cords tends to be much weightier than flageolet. Flageolet tends to be much lighter and agile and the difference, at least to my ears, is super obvious when it's "placed" mostly in the pharynx. The vibrato of a well-placed flageolet whistle register note is so free and "open". I also agree that she could be rehabilitated. I believe she could get back close to the same skill level with very good training and consistency but naturally as you stated the quality of her voice is so much different than when she came out at 19 years old.
