    I have a Spyderco double stuffed. I brought it in soft sided checked bag on a flight. Survived being against the side of the bag. Dropped from 3 feet onto a tiled floor. The two sides separated and bounced around. The ceramic side has a small chip but didn’t break. Thanks for the videos. They are f**king great. \m/

      @@michaelchristy4982 I use the following: Wedgek angle guides, DMT 120u@10dps, 60u@11dps, 45u@12dps, 25u@13dps, gritomatics pocket Atoma 1200@14dps, Velev cerberus dog 1200/1500 @15dps/@16dps. Portable anywhere. Kind of dislike stropping (on leather) because I tend to make the edge too obtuse after a couple of touch ups. Ive seen you use diamond compound on the ceramic stones before. Would you suggest .25u on the 1500 venev or would it abrade the resin?

    I’ve sharpened *dozens* of steels and fully agree…8cr is a great place to start.
    From there, vg10 and opinel’s xc90 are two steels that are nice and easy to bring up. Cruwear and 9cr18mov are great “intermediate” steels…very satisfying and come up *stupid* sharp. K390 is probably the next stop. It requires diamonds and can sometimes have a bit of a burr but that’s it. Aside from those two things, it’s one of my favorite steels to work with…far easier to sharpen than it should be. ZDP-189 is the granddaddy, IMO…even beyond steels like S110V. It needs to be coaxed into high levels of hair whittling sharpness. If you can make ZDP sing, your technique and progressions are dialed in

    I think these sizes are less of an challenge now considering freehand with kme and edge pro is more of a common sight. Non the less I have yet to see an edge so effective as a result of that setup. What I think would be a true pocket stone sharpening is using only 1x3 slip stones. You can get every single chosera stone in 1x3 for $25 on jende. You can get a set of dans Arkansas stones for around the same price, and I know dmt has pocket stones and so I would imagine those to be cheap too. Just an idea. Plus I’d love for you to try the Arkansas black. It leaves a fantastic SHARP edge. (Not polish) It doesn’t take the place of the spyderco uf like I had hoped, because the uf is way better at burr minimization, but it’s a great stone for right after. My setup for something like zdp would be 1x3 chosera 800, 3000, 5000, 10000, Arkansas black then strops. And for something like s110v, dmt 1x3 coarse, fine, ef, (idk if they have an eef in a pocket friendly package) venev double sided 1x3 and 1/8th pocket stone 1200 and 2000 then Arkansas black to strops.

    I think this may be something you need not worry about. I've gutted hundreds of deer, elk, and antelope. Cleaned thousands of fish, upland and wetland game birds and built a million fires. With nothing more than a dual side DMT or a smith. I have never even picked up strop. But I did buy one today for fun, to go with my new edge pro! So now I can be like the you tube guys and grind thru blades at a record pace. Gotta have that hair popping shank in case I get an unusually tricky letter or an ultra burly blister pack. If you ain't got a mirrored edge, you ain't shit! Fuck the police....

    Hey Michael christy, I just got a set of dmt's diasharp plates. It's the 8x3's. All seem great except the extra fine seems so rough and bumpy. the fine seems very smooth and consistent compared. How was your experience using the extra fine?

      @michaelchristy4982  7 років тому

      crf450r bullet david my XF in the plate had what you're talking about. It bothered me for a bit. I found that using it made it better.
      Now, in the Diafold sharpeners, they were all consistent with no issues.

    • @crf450rbulletdavid9
      @crf450rbulletdavid9 7 років тому +1

      Okay thanks for that. It is kind of a strange stone so far. It almost seems like there are no diamonds on it. When I am running my knife across it, it is scratching into the nickle. I am using the plate arrow up. I will use it for a while and hopefully it works out. All the other plates are rock solid, very impressed by them. They have a rough spot here and there but they don't raise any alarms like the xf.

    • @michaelchristy4982
      @michaelchristy4982  7 років тому

      crf450r bullet david as long as it's cutting, you should be good. You can tell if it's cutting by the scratch pattern, or if it raises a burr.

    • @crf450rbulletdavid9
      @crf450rbulletdavid9 7 років тому +1

      I do think it's cutting. I read a trick to run some glass and if it scratched there's diamonds. It did and should be fine. It seems to be getting smoother after using it so far. I'm just used to the atomas where you can visually see the diamonds and I don't remember them to be that rough when new. I will keep using it and I'm sure it will break in. Thanks man. Have an awesome week.

      I buy their powders rather than paste. you can then mix them in any carrier and ratio you want. Thicker carriers will load better and tend to last longer. Thinner ones seem to work faster but need frequent reloading. It will cut super fast on balsa. I use them mostly on leather, and then just a few strokes on balsa for my final final edge. I usually go 3-5 mic general strop and .5 final strop
