I think not dominating is what hip hop needs for a resurgence. Less money and attention on the rap industry will trim the fat and allow the true artists to shine through. We'll get some of the best albums of all time after a stretch of bad albums, effectively "breaking the mold"

True. A genre's death is necessary in the mainstream. Once it loses its popularity and commercial appeal, the underground (which is pretty much where was borned) will set the standards for the upcoming wave of artistd thst will revive the genre in the commercial sphere

there was a 2016-18 period where hiphop peaked in my opinion and that’s when it was at its highest numbers wise so i disagree with those years but in recent years i do agree, the amount of rappers that just make whatever sells the best is crazy, seen a load of rappers go pop

@@LordOfAurum that type of music isn’t popular anymore, there’s probably a lot of lyrical rappers who make great music in ur taste but not for the 15-25 year olds which is what matters nowadays. If u don’t appeal to that age bracket u won’t blow up it’s that simple, especially in rap, in pop u can blow up easier cus if u get a brand deal and get on the radio u can be an industry plant but just having good lyrics doesn’t cut it anymore

Repeat the cycle and add new rollout for every projects you do. That’s how you do it without a label. 🎉

Hip hop is going through what mainstream rock did in the 00’s

    • @luke_cohen1
      @luke_cohen1 5 місяців тому +4

It’s closer to what rock went through in 2014 when Tumblr started to die out. We still had a ton of rock albums within the top 10 on the Billboard 200 (aka the all-genre albums chart) from 2008-2012 but that started to decline around 2013 or so. By 2014, rock, metal, and punk had all stopped innovating and the genre had become a total sausage fest. Rap may not become as much of a sausage fest but the genre isn’t innovating and filled with copycats. The genre needs to make a decision and figure out where it wants to go from here because a lot of the so called underground stuff is way too abrasive and inaccessible for most listeners.
Too many rappers only listen to rap when they should be looking into other genres for new ideas and the same focus in what other rock bands were doing in rock music at that’s what removed rock and metal from the maisntream. Rap would be wise to avoid a similar fate.
Kendrick turned to Jazz to get his point across on TPAB. Beyonce turned to 90’s House on Renaissance in 2022 and Black music from the South in 2016 on Lemonade to achieve her artistic goals. Chance the Rapper used psychedelic music on Acid Rap and Gospel music on Coloring Book in 2016. Dr Dre loves using funk samples for his hits. Jay Z turns to soul music. Kanye uses every damn genre on the planet. The beloved first group of SoundCloud rappers were essentially rock and pop punk fans that turned to rap in order to get some popularity. Rappers needs to start broadening their horizons again.

I would dare to say the lack of interest and quality is in music in general. Sampha released what is in my opinion one of the best albums of 2023, and it did not even enter the billboard 200. Mind you, this is Sampha, who has worked with Drake and Kendrick, and at this point is not underground per se. Music has become monopolized to the point where record labels will throw promo money on mega established artists, like Bad Bunny and Taylor Swift, while not giving it to artists that bring a fresher approach to music. When looking at who's to blame for the lack of quality and interest, we have to point at both the consumer and the industry. If the bad chick that you are dating wants to listen to Bad Bunny (no pun intended), then playing my songs on loop might not get you the play you want, and it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy, where being popular is automatically good, and good no longer equals being popular.

Idk I disagree with his view tbh I don't think kendrick and travis did great numbers on their tour bc of their artistry from their last albums. I think them haven't been on tour for 4 5 years played a huge role in that and I feel like they shouldn't even be used as examples of how hip hop isn't dying bc those guys are OGs at this point they already have their solidified fanbase. Artists bringing new sounds would definitely help hip hop in bringing attention to the genre, but at the same time a lot of new artists nowadays that catch a buzz 9/10 its through TikTok and I feel like with multiple artists having their 5 mins of fame from catching a TikTok buzz don't even get a chance to truly develop their artistry bc the kids are already on to the next. Only a very few have actually been able to maintain their buzz like Ice Spice, but artist like Teezo who actually have their own unique sound who's collaborated with multiple mainstream Artist are still struggling to catch a hit. Therefore, with TikTok and streaming idk if hip hop can ever actually get back to where it was bc at the end of the day its kids and teens that really keep the genre up there.

I really think Tyler the Creator is one of the most impressive artists to come out of rap/hiphop in the past decade, even though I hated (and it seems he does too) his older work before Flower Boy. Still, he has the gift, but has definitely decided to reduce his connection to the genre. This isn’t a bad thing as he clearly has a desire to explore different avenues, BUT
I think if he put out a rap banger (not saying he has to), I think it would really breathe some fresh air into a genre that needs it. He is one of the few I think has the composing, producing, writing and performance ability to offer something new.
Also, we need to start supporting rappers who aren’t in the mainstream. Little Simz is brilliant. Give artists like her a chance to gain some recognition in the genre outside of those in the know.

The problem with rap is the artists that are currently quality and popular are the ones from the past generations. All these good rappers releasing music and also popular are all in their 30s or more. Travis, Kanye, Drake, Kendrick, Savage, JID (he’s 33 believe it or not), Cole, etc. Young and talented artists that were supposed to be next up are falling off or got lost in the money. Roddy Rich, DaBaby, Lil Baby, Polo G, even Don Toliver. These guys were supposed to be the next Drake, the next DMX, the next Travis Scott, etc. Pop Smoke was supposed to be the next 50 Cent, but he passed away. These artists that should be blowing up right now aren’t. There’s only a few artists that are under 30 who are in that superstar category like Carti, Uzi and Yachty, who are experimenting with their sound a lot recently. But young stars? There’s Yeat maybe, Baby Keem and maybe Ken Carson. Those are pretty much the only 3 notable artists that come to mind. Compared to Drake, Kendrick, Kanye and Cole from the late 2000s-2010s, that’s an unbelievably mid group of guys. Drake, Kendrick, Cole and Kanye won’t be making as much music in the next 7 years, if at all. There needs to be a couple young quality artists with mainstream potential that come up this year. Someone needs to have a comeback, maybe Lil Baby’s next album will be amazing, but I really doubt it.

Only thing Kanye is moving forward is antisemitism and far-right ideology in hip-hop, which essentially, is going to be the death of real hip-hop. Plus his music has been trash for quite some time now. Only people who would argue this are racists and bigots who are ecstatic to have a Black man on their side so they can say "see, if he agrees with us, how can we possibly be racists and bigots?", all the while they know in their hearts that his recent output is mid at best, hot garbage at worst. Y'all know who you are.

Is a branch from hip hop I do agree. But this new music is not HIP-HOP I was born in 94. And it’s not as much of night and day thing with the 80’s 90’s 00’s until 2007 for real Rap. But it’s just that hip hop was for struggle and the struggling, now this new stuff doesn’t even uplift the poor anymore just flex’s on us and keep us out until they Need some validation from the streets. HIP HOP is for the streets, the ghetto streets to be specific. Just wanted to leave that there. Because hip hop was always unground. And this mainstream is for the pop stars no shade

    J. Cole, Drake and Kendrick are still the big 3. Credit is due as no one has ever maintained that level of relevance for that long in rap history, however, without ANY next superstar to take the mantle, hiphop is going to keep struggling.
Especially with Kendrick taking another 5 year break, and Drake continuously releasing poor quality music.
Who is next up? As in who is could potentially take the mantle from Drake as The Guy? Absolutely no one at the moment. Its really sad how the quality of rap has dropped
