      I was just a very young child then, but yeah, I do get nostalgic for the old days more and more. (It's not just a British thing either, you notice similar comments under old episodes of TV shows that were broadcast in West Germany in the 1970s and 1980s - people often say "ah, if only we could go back to those days".)

    Mary is soo sensible, great advice and actually ahead of her time in some ways. Glad Britain has moved past these stodgy foods.

    The pie looks fantastic, although I am vegetarian, and that looks like a pork pie with hard boiled egg halves in it. If anyone ever reads the childhood classic Danny the Champion of the World by Road Dahl, Danny’s Father has to go to hospital with a broken ankle (as far as I can remember, haven’t read the book for years) and his Father’s friend Doc Spencer visits Danny who is alone in their caravan (Danny and his Father’s caravan) and brings him a pie exactly like that, and says to Danny:-“My wife asked me to give you this, - I think you’ll like it, she’s a terrific cook.” and Danny cuts himself a slice of pie after Doc Spencer has gone, and thinks to himself as he is eating it:- “God bless Doc Spencer, and God bless Mrs Spencer as well!!” 😊

      I see that people speaking English correctly is now something to be mocked...

      @Knappa22 4 роки тому

      @@fishyc150 Oh wind your neck in. It was lighthearted and I said they were brilliant.
      Oh and there is no ‘correct way’ to pronounce and speak English. There are a variety of accents and dialects.

    • @fishyc150
      @fishyc150 4 роки тому +1

      @@Knappa22 you are literally mocking by mimicking for comedic effect the accent and affectation of a different group or social class to yourself. Lighthearted or not. My point stands.
      And there is indeed a "correct" version of English. You can find the correct pronunciation in the oxford English dictionary after each word written in phonetics. Anything else is a variation. That is why TV presenters sounded that way.

    • @Knappa22
      @Knappa22 4 роки тому

      @@fishyc150 Excuse me, how do you know whether or not I am in the same social class as them? And while the Oxford dictionary does offer a pronunciation guide there are definite variations within it. Unless you think the Queen sounds exactly like your average BBC Radio 4 announcer.

    Of curiosity: Judith Chalmers sounds posher then than now & Mary Berry's accent sounds more relaxed here (except for 'glass'/glaws) than it does now, strangely. (Though my RADA trained mother started saying 'rally' when working at Savills in the 80s & people's accents change)

  • @MarkPMus
    @MarkPMus Рік тому

    The cameraman must’ve been a bit pie-eyed, the angle’s so wonky. I love the posh way Mary talks about “lairs” and “laird fillings”. I’m not sure I’d enjoy sandwiches made from week-old frozen bread.

    • @andrewjones-productions
      @andrewjones-productions Рік тому +2

      Perhaps that's why she is rich, because she looked after the pennies in the early days so that the pounds would look after themselves later in life. The programme was also designed to help families of the day eat well on a budget as if you are old enough to remember, the 1970s wasn't exactly a decade that was booming economically.
