My mom watched every show he recorded. Mind you this was 1978 (I think). Then she stayed in Danville, IL and took lessons from him personally. Then she rented a store and opened a shop, teaching classes on how to paint. Whoever started those wine and canvas classes trumped us all 😂. Linda Bennett, my mom, participated as a vendor at good shows. Most of the time she was right across from Thomas Kincade. Thanks William (RIP), you helped my mom (RIP) have a 45 year career.
Bill's strong personality is whom my father would have painted with. Bob's relaxing personality is whom my mother would have painted with. Can't recommend one over the other - it's all about how you woke up this morning - with more passion, or with more harmony. We are lucky to have had you both!
bobs show wasn't really about painting..its not about teaching painting, most people who watch his show don't even paint and never will...its relaxing to watch and hear him talk, its relaxation and de-stress, he takes away anxiety and stress, its like taking a tranquilizer watching him...bill is the better painter but like i said its not about that...bobs personality and gentle approach to the world is why he was vastly popular and to this day.

I know that Bill Alexander and Bob Ross had a falling out later on in their careers, but isn't it wonderful to be able to watch these masters paint again on video? I remember watching Bill painting on PBS and marveled at his painting techniques. I will say that he is a bit of a talker instead of doing that while he is painting. He talks to the camera explaining his philosophy of life and painting, which I enjoy hearing, he has a lot of wisdom to impart. I can tell the passion he had for the art and it shows. I used to regularly watch this painter every week religiously in my late teens/early 20s. I had forgotten his name, so I was not able to find his videos on UA-cam until this randomly came up while I was looking at rose propagation videos. This is a happy day for me!!!!
We religiously watched Bill Alexander on PBS. Even went to a class and painted a scene in the Alexander style. Have the two paintings hanging in our living room along with the book showing the original we were copying. It's from The Magic of Oil Painting by W. Alexander, A Walter T. Foster Publication, book #162, pages 6 & 7, ISBN (1990). Also got to see him lecture at a suburban shopping mall. He spoke for about three hours and never finished the painting! (It was on a canvas about 3 times the size usually used in the TV show.) Was a great experience. He had great charisma and was never boring! Glad to find this video on UA-cam.
