  • Steeleye Span performing 'The Bonny Black Hare' taken from the bonus DVD included with the 'Live At A Distance' album, recorded live in Hove, Dec 2006. Available to buy from the Park Shop here: parkrecords.com/product/prkcd1...
Two CDs and a DVD to celebrate their entire career, from the earliest days of ‘The Blacksmith’ through to their most recent album ‘Bloody Men’. With four decades of material to choose from, it’s unsurprising that Steeleye are not content just to roll out the hits. These are often songs that have come and gone from their live set over the years, allowing the band to return and revisit them at will.
    Phil Udell, 2009
In a world where bands come and go in the blink of an eye, the enduring success of Steeleye Span is one of the great stories in rock music. 2009 saw them celebrate an incredible forty years together, an achievement made all the more remarkable by the fact that the band had seldom been more active in its career.
At a period in their career when most bands are happy to settle down to rehashing past glories, Steeleye Span have pushed on with a succession of acclaimed albums, each seeing them re-define their classic sound.
The two CDs were recorded over four concerts between 2002 and 2008; the DVD was filmed at Hove in 2006.

Brilliant violinning indeed! I think that the cameraman eventually sussed that it wasn't the guitar making that almighty sound :-)
    Love this version.

I saw them last night at Moseley Folk Festival. I have never seen them live before but have most of their records. I think my jaw dropped during this, their final number before encores of AAMH and G. These guys in concert should be required viewing for all young and aspiring bands, both folk and rock. I will now be eternally grateful that they are still performing and can do it like this.

That should FIDDLING, not "violinning", that sounds weird, and there's actually no such word.

Dear sweet Jesus, Mary and Joseph......I first heard Steeleye Span when I was sparkin' a girl in Newfoundland, while paying in the bars there. I have played with a violin for years, now it's time to play it for real!!! I was groovin' on the bass line, and thought, now him and that drummer, who is a very very good drummer, are having a grand old time! And then Maddy got me! The guitar is gutsy, raw, and GREAT, but the Fiddle....oh my.. I have to go sit down now. I'll be ok, don't worry........

Six years ago now, nice version, had that West Coast rock edge/sound, which early Fairport sported before they got fully into Folk music.

@donyaquijota - quite unambiguous: She gives directions (... but under me apron they say it did go ...) and an invitation (... and if you'll not deceive me ... we'll both go together to hunt the bonny black hare ...).
Then after all of his bravado: "if your powder is good ... fair why don't you keep firing at the bonny black hare?" ... his rejoinder makes it a very honest account of the survival of the species - both expressing their wishes and taking responsibility. Very good story all around.

I like the discreet nature of the words here. Good and raunchy and non-PC. One question only. I am off to interview some senior mining company executives as I am a freelance writer. Should I wear my hair in the style of the drummer?

Great musicianship Maddy has ruined a beautiful song as she has changed her style of singing and I hate it! This is a traditional song which really does need the traditional treatment.

I am a huge Steeleye fan, but this is the worst version of this song I've ever heard. Dreadful. Listen to Fairport's version instead.
