Saw Steeleye last week on their 2015 tour & this was the opening number. Maddie, Rick & Liam still maintaining their presence! Plus the latest additions of fantastic young fiddler Jessie-May; guitarist Spud & guitar/keyboard from Julian. Love 'em.

Delightful! I've loved them since I first heard them in the '70s. I am so envious of those of you that saw them on this tour. I did get to see them open for Jethro Tull in '73 in Minneapolis.

I saw the band at the Manchester FTH (or was it in Stockport at the Davenport cinema? ) back in 1976...
Got to visit the UK in 2004 & saw this tour in Oxford & got to meet Maddy & Peter. We have tickets for the closing night of the 2009 tour in Buxtin & are really looking forward to this.

I have been searching for this song for over 15 years - its great to see it up here. Even better would be the original studio version, but even so its great live!

I had just discovered Maddy Prior and found this and at first was disappointed she wasn't the soloist, but Nicol's vocal has really grown on me. I've been playing this video over and over. It makes me happy. I think it's perfect: great instrumental writing and playing, catchy fiddle, great harmonies. And the drummer--I grew up next to a grade school drummer and have been rather antipathetic to drums but Genockey isn't just keeping the beat but, I don't know what to say, an equal "voice"

On the record, the late Tim Hart sang the lead. Maddy Prior never sang lead on this song.

Oh have you heard Sir James The Rose,
The young heir of Loch Laggan,
For he has killed a gallant squire
And his friends are out to take him
He has gone to the House of Marr
The nurse there did befriend him
And he has gone upon his knees
And begg for her to hide him
"Oh where you're going, Sir James? she said,
    "Where now are you riding?"
"Oh I am bound to a foreign land"
    "For now I'm under hiding"
    Where shall I go?
    Where shall I run?
Where shall I go for to hide me?
For I have killed a gallant squire
And they're seeking for to slay me
The he's turned him right and round about
And rolled him in the bracken,
And he has gone to take a sleep
In the lowlands of Loch Laggan
He has not well gone out of the sight
    Nor was he passed Milstrehen
When four and twenty belted knights
    'Came ridind o'er the leathen
Have you seen Sir James The Rose,
The young heir of Loch Laggan,
For he has killed a gallant squire
And we're send out to take him
    Where shall I go?
    Where shall I run?
Where shall I go for to hide me?
For I have killed a gallant squire
And they are seeking for to slay me
You will see the bank above the mill
In the lowlands of Loch Laggan
There you'll find Sir James the Rose sleepin' in the bracken
You must not wake him out of sleep
Nor yet must you afright him
Just run a dart right through his heart
And through the body pierce him
They sought the bank above the mill
In the lowlands of Loch Laggan,
There they found Sir James The Rose
    Sleeping in the bracken
    Where shall I go?
    Where shall I run?
Where shall I go for to hide me?
For I have killed a gallant squire
And they're seeking for to slay me
Then up and spake Sir John the Graeme
    Who had a charge-a-keepin'
"It will never be said, dear gentleman,
We killed him while him sleeping"
They seized his broadsword and his targe
    And closely him surrounded
And when he woke out of his sleep
    His senses were confounded
Now they have taken out his heart
And stuck it on a spear
They took it to the House of Marr
And gave it to his dear...

Nice - a real decent version of this song, which doesn't seem to be easily found anywhere as an mp3. It's on the "Rocket Cottage" album...whcih I have on vinyl, not CD.

@atfatw Yes, and doing a damn fine job of it. The only pathetic thing is your crusade against her. I've had a good bit of joy from this band, stretching back into the 70's, so if you haven't anything positive to say about them, just go away.

"Spake"? Steeleye Span belong in a classic fantasy book, and its world as well.
