How to calculate the total no of Ragams in Carnatic music? No of Melakarta Ragams in total (Parent scales )-72 No of Janya Ragams (derived scale ) in total from each Melakarta -483 Total no of Ragams = No of Janya Ragams in each Melakarta * No of melakarta ragams =483*72 = 34,776 Thus there are total 34,776 ragams all together in Carnatic music, -By Amithesh (Carnatic flute player ) Disciple of Natyacharya Dr.Balachandra Raju Guruji ,Natyacharya Sushruthi Raju and Bhooma Parthasarathi 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
@@ashrithharith3474 Here's the math, For each of the 72 possible melakarta set of notes, we have: 1 arohanam with all 7 notes (sampurna) = 1 6 arohanams with 6 out of 7 notes (shadava) = 6 (6 choose 2) or 15 arohanams with 5 of the 7 notes (audava) = 15 Therefore, we have 1 + 6 + 15 = 22 possible arohanams from 1 set of melakarta notes Repeat the same for avarohanams, you get 1 + 6 + 15 = 22 possible avarohanams per melakarta Total number of possible combinations of aroh and avarohs = 22 * 22 = 484 Subtract 1 because we're double counting the melakarta with 7 notes in aro and 7 in avaroh = 483 However, as Chaitanya pointed out, many janyas will be double counted. The actual number is ~26000 not 34776.
To learn such music (saraswati vidya) in its true sense and nature and imbibe to one's intellectual brain, requires cultured and spiritual upbringing with ethics and morals that come as part of ancient Indian sampradaya. You are such wonderful person who are gifted with such qualities and avenues madam. I totally admire your educational values. Namaskaram.
I thoroughly enjoy Carnatic music but I beg to differ. It has nothing to do with ethics and morals. Carnatic music is like any other genre of music. Let us not build a halo around everything that is ancient. Just enjoy!
That's why we set the first note pa to ma theevra to get the shrutishudham. And I disagree with ur point because hindolam has gamakas easier than other heavy ragas such as thodi or kalyani❤
Excellent teaching of carnatic music by you Madam, which impressed me so much that I developed confidence in your methodology of teaching and decided to join the basics of carnatic music in Voxguru. I hope I will be able to achieve what I desired putting my best effort

Fully agree with you
Only one style of Indian music. India has countless other styles.
@@swarnadipmitra1095indian classical music only has 2 variations- carnatic and hindustani
1. Shankarabharanam
2. Mohanam
3. Hamsadhwani
4. Mayamalavagowla
5. Hindolam
Raag Mohanam is called as 'Raag Bhoop' in Hindustani Music😊

How is the number of Janyas from melakarthas 483? How does one arrive at that number ?
One thing is, many janya ragas overlap with different janaka ragas...
@@ashrithharith3474 Here's the math,

Total number of possible combinations of aroh and avarohs = 22 * 22 = 484

I don’t agree that hindolam is a friendly raga for beginners - the absence of panchama makes it difficult to sing with shruthishudham.
