The problem is Metal just isn't Metal any more, with it's 1,000 and counting sub-genres. If you dress and act like The Waterboy, it doesn't matter about how Metal you think you are, the only thing you're gonna get is a swift kick.
punk is the funniest one for this. The thing about this is Weezer did a metal album, it was called Van Weezer. It was more glam-metal that to the style of Van Halen, but it did still have some hard hitting parts and awesome guitar shredding. So the fact that this guy is getting mad at Weezer looking dudes trying to be metal, when Weezer can be metal and have been is so stupid.
Anyone who knows anything about Rivers knows that he was massively influenced by metal bands in the early days of his musicianship. He was in a band called avant garde and its all hair metal stuff. Weezer also had a song called "The Answer Man" in 91 when they were still "60 wrong sausages" and its relatively pretty heavy.
Wow, now Weezer is metal?? They are not and neither are Van Halen and neither are Black Sabbath. Why cant hard rock be hard rock, whats wrong with that? It it is called 'hard' because it does have some heavy stuff in there, not everything needs to be metal to be cool.
Weezer can be metal *but that doesn't mean they call themselves that.* Stop putting words in River's mouth, he never called himself a "metal guitarist".
@@TheAbandonedAccount7 all of weezer was influenced by heavy metal, like they all can tell you in any of their interviews, and if you wanna make the argument that you have to look a certain way to be metal, all of weezer's members at some point had long hair and no glasses in their lives.

This reminds me of the people that used to talk about how their favourite rockstar could kick another rockstar's ass. That was very important. How times have changed.
Not many guys in metal were actually genuine tough guys though? 😆 I remember people saying Dave Mustaine was tough because apparently he did karate? He is a 5' 7" 115lbs Egyptian mummy and he's one of tougher guys from that time in metal! 😉 The band's from the last 15 years are actually a lot bigger, healthier and likely to train! They don't need long hair, leather and goatees to be tough!

@@GoneTo11 In the 90's, in a lot of local scenes around the world, members from different "rival" metal bands (yes, metal bands, not punk) often picked fights with each other, as well as fans too.
As a bass player in a metal band, appearance means nothing. I don’t judge another band just because they dress differently or look different than I do. This is just funny to me though 😂
You know...over the years I always thought I had to dress or look a certain way to play "metal", but this "new" concept helps people appreciate metal music without judging them for their appearance, so , this means it's good that stereotypes of how to look disappear. In simpler words, you don't need to change anything other than your musical habits to enjoy metal instead of pretending to be (or look) something you're not.
In all honesty, Stevie really has originality when he does his sponsors. Like he does not just do a "scripted" presentation, but he does it using his actual appeal. You rock stevie
I once showed my girlfriend Helmet's "Unsung" video. She loved the song and the video but commented, "those guys look like frat boys". I had a hard time disagreeing with her and ultimately just said, "yeah, not all metal bands fit the image!"
I find the attitude of Lizzy Borden's "Me Against the World" more METAL than anything Deicide has ever done. You can call Glenn a legend or whatever but he was just another dime by the dozen cookie monster metalhead to me.
There are a bunch of different looking people who like metal. Trying to fit them into some stereotypical mold is very reductive. I look like a mix between a kindergarden teacher, a librarian and a lumberjack... And I enjoy metal... I look more like someone who'd invite you to bake cookies or do arts and crafts, than someone who'd hangout in a mosh pit (I don't, I buy seated tickets at shows). Oh and by the way Weezer is really fun to check out in concert. I saw them twice at music festivals. They sound a bit more heavy and punk live. I've enjoyed them live just like I also know I'll enjoy seeing Korn, Gojira and Spiritbox in a few weeks. I say listen to the music that makes you happy and dress the way you want... Whatever...
Also I can’t believe you wrote such a banger metal song for a comedy skit! You deserve wayy more commodity than whatever just Yt gives you!!! Super inspiring!!!!
at about 4:00 he says that metal is the only genre that pushes non conformity. i would also like to add punk rock to that list of genres that push for non conformity
Metal is the only genre where it doesn't matter what your background, race, religion, sexuality, political views, age, income or lifestyle is. Everyone is welcome.
Glen is the goth kids from South Park complaining about conformists and then immediately after rejecting people because they don't look and act like them. Metal is about metal. Embarrassing.
When Glenn is going to get old (like in 3 years or something :D ) and will have hearing, vision and walking problems then I guess he won't be metal anymore. I'm joking, he's already old. Great re-diss video Steve! BTW I don't look like a nerd but I'm also over the period when I wanted to dress as a metal head, just to be a part of the subculture...These guys are the prisoners of their look and slaves to the genre.
Gonna have to disagree with you here Steve-O! Its pretty rare that i agree with Glennis, but this is one of those times. Its an age thing tho. (I'm 46) There was a time when literally the ONLY guy with short hair in ALL of Metal was Ken from Carcass, who stood out as a clear anomaly. As time shifted more and more sub genre's appeared and with them a wider parameter of personalities got involved which diluted the personal aesthetic. MANY people weren't as committed to the 'look' due to fear of being judged socially, employment etc,... For myself,... i wanted long hair at 12 but wasn't allowed due to school. (Now i've had hair down to my butt for 30 years) I always thought that people who like and are good at being Metal SHOULD look Metal and WANT to? To actively choose NOT to is still completely baffling to me, i just thought it was down to a lack of commitment or a fear of what others thought of them,... which is fine, not everyone can process the social pressure of being perceived in a way they are uncomfortable with. If you are Metal from the inside out, you should want to show and connect with others, and while i can comprehend why people don't,... it still baffles me why someone with hair would choose to cut it short and stay 'in the shadows' about something they claim is important to them. Again,.. it is an age thing,... like throat tattoos, hoopy ear lobes and awful Djent 'metal' where actual Riffs are replaced by 0's. They can shred,.. but cant Riff to save their lives. Being immersed in Metal culture today, there's no possible way you can understand where he's coming from. There are SO MANY flavours of Metal he just sounds like he's shouting at the kids on his lawn... but from someone who was THERE, and has viewed a wider parameter of the Metal landscape ,... i can tell you he's 100% right. Sorry about that. (I still love you no matter what you look like tho!)
Metal has a dress code? What is this, the No Life 'til Leather demo? That guy on the left in Deicide had a shaved head, not long hair. Black Sabbath didn't dress to look evil. Most people don't walk around with t-shirts of Satan because they're adults. If it's all about looking the part, he should join Slipknot who seem to think playing dress-ups makes your music heavier
It's like a Trve Cult guy saying that you have to wear Corpse paint or some shit. Like no, I'm not going to walk around with a Halloween costume on. For shows, maybe, if I'm feeling up to it. But the idea that metalheads have to look a specific way is the most unmetal thing I've ever heard.
The fact that glen just said "guys with black rimmed glasses and short hair aren't metal" just pisses me off. Chester Bennington had glasses and short hair and he was metal!!
I liked Linkin Park and definitely liked Chester. Though I don't think he was metal or cared about such things. There were definitely metal influences in there, but I don't think he was metal and that's not a bad thing.
Purists are a dying generation. As someone who's made a lot of metal music, I consider it one flavor of art. I make and enjoy all kinds of styles. Metal has a special place in my heart, but it's one musical expression of many I enjoy and appreciate on all kinds of different levels.
@@symptomofsouls Maybe, I clearly have always had a bias here. I would play metal shows in khaki shorts and flip flops or bare foot because that's what's comfortable. I think image can be cool to some extent, but style and culture can overtake music for a lot of people, and I was never one to follow trends, so maybe I'm just a music purist generally. I got one rule. Make good music.
@@dreaminginnoother I thought about starting a band for a while (no one I know wants to) and I grew up with my dad being a huge fan of King Diamond and Alice Cooper so to me I think the aesthetic is just part of it, it's more than music. I never thought I would agree with Glenn of Deicide about anything but he’s right about metal bands looking like the high school math club. I like the image of the metal rebel. Tight jeans, black leather jackets, metal band T-shirts, long hair etc. This all started when Metallica cut their hair.
Dude, you are right. I thought I was alone in this whole thing. I hate modern metal because it's not the same anymore. I mean, these guys way misunderstood Glenn. Glenn was talking about metal bands. KIRK WINDSTEIN (Crowbar)

Gatekeeping is so pointless, just let people wear what they’re comfortable in and listen to the music that makes them happy! I’ve found some of my favourite metal bands through your videos. Nerdy or not, you are totally metal! 🤘
Nobody ever gatekeeps a genre. The people who whine about, "gatekeeping," are whiners who don't get along with people.

He is definitely more nerdy than anything else, he is literally the inspiration for revenge of the nerds.
This applies to so many things beyond just metal too
@gregoryl.levitre9759 and the ones who whine about being gatekept are always the ones who deserve to be gatekept because they ruin everything they touch.
"Metal guys dont have long hair anymore, all the Long Hair guys are gone man"......Scott Ian, Rob Halford, Phil Anselmo, Jens Kidman, Kerry King, Kirk Windstein and David Draiman looked at each other thoughtfuly and left the room
Now we're gatekeeping imagery. "Nobody cares about the imagery anymore " WWWHHHHAAAATTTTTTT??? That's the least metal thing I've ever heard. That's one of the bigger points of metal.
That's not just the least metal thing to say, that's a poser thing to say. Glam metal is called «poser» by some for a reason...
Bro fr. I thought not caring about the imagery was something these old metal dudes were really big on emphasizing back in the day lol.

Yes innovation can be a good thing.
Agreed. Just in general I agree. "Be like me. Don't be the way I don't like." Some people always want to project outward and look down on other people. Spend more time looking inward. And more specifically, saying you have to look a certain way to be a metal head is just dumb. You can wear a suit and tie and work for the FBI and still love metal.
Yeah, and coming from a guy his age is a disgrace! Did he look around at new metal bands? All ranges of looks are there, from the most stereotypical to the most nerdy...all are rocking and keeping metal alive!
I’m about as old as the guy you were rightfully calling out. And you are the perfect person to have created this video. You nailed it.
I guess folks lose perspective sometimes. It’s sad, but maybe he will see your response and have a moment to recollect what the heart and soul of metal truly are.
Loved how you threw the Wheezer in there. You of are always entertaining Stevie. Take care. 🤘
I’m really tired of the creeps gatekeeping already. Ok, I’m in the same boat. Black frame glasses and I took up guitar around 14 or 15 because I felt very out of place at school. And got into death metal at that point to express my anger without repercussions. Who gives a flying crap what looks metal anymore. The point is we enjoy the music we play and or listen to.
The problem is Metal just isn't Metal any more, with it's 1,000 and counting sub-genres.
If you dress and act like The Waterboy, it doesn't matter about how Metal you think you are, the only thing you're gonna get is a swift kick.
punk is the funniest one for this. Nothing quite like a group of modern "punks" rejecting you because you aren't dressed in the same uniform as them. you have to conform to being non conformist in the most conformist way. whereas i can rock into an classic punk show in a movie t shirt and jeans and no one gives a shit. Metal elitists though... damn. I remember walking through brighton on a metal 2 the masses heat day and it was like a competition of who owns the most obscure metal band t shirt and all the unfortunate souls in metallica and pantera tees were completely shunned.

punks reject you if you aren't a far-leftist. Like, they think that you can't be a 'true punker' if you aren't a literal marxist...

@@oldguymetal Yes, in fact they deliberately wear white dresses and things to stand out, and look different... but they have some thrashy tunes that can rival some of the best stuff out there!

I find the attitude of Lizzy Borden's "Me Against the World" more METAL than anything Deicide has ever done. You can call Glenn a legend or whatever but he was just another dime by the dozen cookie monster metalhead to me.
Deicide sucks
There are a bunch of different looking people who like metal. Trying to fit them into some stereotypical mold is very reductive. I look like a mix between a kindergarden teacher, a librarian and a lumberjack... And I enjoy metal... Gonna have to disagree with you here Steve-O!
Its pretty rare that i agree with Glennis, but this is one of those times.
Its an age thing tho. (I'm 46)
There was a time when literally the ONLY guy with short hair in ALL of Metal was Ken from Carcass, who stood out as a clear anomaly.
(Now i've had hair down to my butt for 30 years)
I always thought that people who like and are good at being Metal SHOULD look Metal and WANT to?
