The quality of the film is really impressive. We are putting on an historical ice harvest this weekend and I'm fascinated learning about it's rich history in our area.

I found some ice harvesting spuds in about 15' of water once. Later I talked to an old guy who used to work at that ice barn's location many years before. He said they used to "fall" into the water on purpose because the company would give them some alcohol to drink after they got out to warm up :)

As funny as that is alcohol actually lowers your internal body temp, it just feels to the drinker like its warmer XD.

Interesting look at a trade that'd die off completely not too long after

Great little silent film. Who needs an "expert" telling us what we're seeing? Shows the production process from beginning to end, or at least storage in the warehouse. I'm a bit concerned that after all those people and horses had traipsed over it that ice was going to end up in somebody's drink :-)

Astonishing video considering the age. I was born in the wrong era. I would have loved to live at that time in history. Actually before then. Prior to the discovery of oil. A wonderful and awful product. (oil)

Back when nobody got hysterical about removing ice from a public water body.

Well, the process stopped shortly after refrigeration became commercially viable to create "artificial" ice instead, as many of the bodies of water that ice was harvested from became polluted from industrial run off. But to your point - yeah, it's fun to see just the vast difference between 100 years ago and now what people find acceptable.
