    One factor that was not mentioned is that the size of the company will affect the number of responsibilities a dev has. In a project with 600 devs, one can expect their tasks will be extremely focuses, which can be great if you like this specific task (let's say AI or physics programming) but it can suck if you do not enjoy your current role because it can take a long time to get a new one and by experience, whenever the company will need support in a role that you were good at, they'll ask to put you back on it, even if you hated that role. If you started doing analytics, you'll be doing analytics for a long time!
    One the other side of the spectrum, in a small company, you'll be wearing many hats, many of which will sometimes go outside your skill sets. This can sometimes be quite exciting, but again, it's a double edge sword because you'll often have to stop working on fun stuff to jump on boring stuff.

    The European Salaries strike me as very high. (I live in Germany)
    Seniors here can usually expect around 60k-72k, Principals (super seniors) around 76k, Leads around 80k.
    Your figures for Juniors are pretty spot on with 30k-36k EUR.
    If you named your figures in USD, the numbers would be kind of correct.
    Or maybe I live in the wrong country. :D

    Hi, I have question,I like technology and video games and I have made the decision to make a career in this area. First I thought about web development and mobile applications but then I said no because I have to learn more than one technology such as javascript, python, java, php, etc. To be competitive. Now I am delighted with Unreal Engine and I am learning to operate the engine and it is an advantage for me because I only have to learn a single programming language, C ++. I am 34 years old and now I am very dedicated to learning Unreal Engine and my goal is to be a junior in less than a year and I hear this from the world of technology about people looking for work in that area and who are discriminated against because of their age. My question is, if I look for a job in a video game company, will I have any difficulty getting a job because of my age?

      Let me give you some insight from both ends. I am a UX designer who has backend and IT knowledge on top of front end (js,css,angular) experience in my day to day job. At nights I recently started progressing towards unreal engine via blueprints, some material creation and some visual effects creation. These are different universes. And I can honestly tell you becoming a front End developer where you can start being resourceful to a team takes 10 times shorter compared to a game development team in means working through logic which performs good. Unreal engine has a slot for 10 or so different disciplines (distinct individual expertise) whereas front end has basically 2 (design, program) . Both of them are progressive tech so you have to keep up with it. If you want to do everything your own it is better to pursue a front end career. But if your passion is really for game dev you have to take an arrow to the knee and go for it. While saying that if you have to bring money to the table right away I 'd suggest you to go with front end since GameDev is still a niche compared to webdev. If you insist on GameDev then focus on 2 aspects 1-Blueprints 2-{put a discipline in here} -> Animation, VFX, Material creation, 3D Modelling, Level design, Environment design, Lighting, Cinematography, creative writing, game design . The more niche you go the better. Some people just do VFX and sell it on marketplace. There is nothing wrong with that. If you need money urgent you can try that method. If you are generally knowledgeable about everything that doesn't necessarily translate into a job contract. If you advertise yourself as (that is not something you should state but your portfolio should) an VFX artist focusing on Explosives that is way better search criteria for a big contract.
      And you are pretty young so people will just care about what you bring on to the show.

      Try not to limit yourself with 1 language. Try learning java, c# and python even if they aren't 100% required the employer will see and be like wow this guy's resume is impressive. Goodluck 👍

    • @bm1006
      @bm1006 2 роки тому

      Yes you will have difficulty but no one becomes younger. Everyone ages.
      But the easy way around this is to eat healthy, workout, get enough sleep so you look younger.
      Then never mention your age or when you graduated college or got certifications.
      Let the HR lady's imagination run wild if they want to guess your age.

      @@denizorsel1029 you mencioned to focus on animation,VFX,etc on the step 2, but if you are a game dev, the word dev, isn't related to programming? So, don't you need to be a great programmer focused on C#, C++ and etc? I'm saying that, Because you didn't mentioned any programing language on your focus aspects. (I'm thinking about being a game dev too, currently i'm a network enginner).

    • @denizorsel1029
      @denizorsel1029 2 роки тому

      @@felipefigueira9689 Hi Felipe, on step 2 (given the person will focus on Unreal Engine) , I suggested anyone to start with Blueprints as it is a visual representation of the code so it would be easier to transition into developing games. C++ (which is what Unreal Engine uses otherwise - a tamed version of it ) requires seasoning and may cause fatique for newcomers before they could bring anything playable. Once a newcomer starts releasing simple games via blueprints (do not mistake blueprints' power as you can really build top class prototypes ready to play if you will) sooner or later he/she will run into its shortcomings where developing with C++ will make much more sense. Then developer can slowly refactor blueprints into C++ code and continue there. Essentially, blueprints and C++ are just tools to realize one's ideas and should be used in tandem for efficiency (time + prototyping + testing etc..)
      And no, you don't need to be a great developer to develop anything. You just need to start from somewhere and listen to great developers' journeys so that you can speed up your journey. And when you become great in developing more than usually you would stop coding actively and start sharing your expertise (be it as a lead developer, manager, etc.)
      If you really want me to speak about languages, I would suggest you to try them with crash courses and go with the one(s) which makes sense for you the most. This creates a mental modal about programming for you which you could later use for transitioning into different languages when needed. Refrain yourself from being a purist as it will narrow your scope and limit your opportunities. Good luck!

Is way too hard and competition is fierce and every day gets worse, you will compete with AAA industry and even with old games or other forms of entertainement like youtube for players time, and is a lot to learn and is basicly impossible to make a good selling game alone.
