Race The Tube - Can You Walk Faster Than The Central Line?

  • We're back out onto the Tube to try out a couple of connections where we think it's possible to walk faster than the Central line!
    First up, is the classic Queensway to Bayswater dodge, but after that did you know that Lancaster Gate to Paddington are exceedingly close, and can be easily walked? It's even an official TfL Out of Station Interchange as well, meaning you can break your journey between these two stations but still pay just the one fare.
    Hit subscribe if you like this, and look at the other videos in the 'Race The Tube' playlists where we've done more!

    I love this series. When the CrossLizPurpLine Train eventually opens there will have to be a race between the Central Line and Elizabeth Line from Ealing Broadway to Stratford and a race between the District Line and Elizabeth Line from Ealing Broadway to Whitechapel. I really dislike the lines because they're always delayed due to old signals (usually Edgware Road which dates back to 1926!) and they go so much slower than other lines.

    • @ashleyw1393
      @ashleyw1393 4 роки тому +3

    When my family visited London in 2019, we stayed in a hotel right between Paddington and Lancaster Gate. This gave us plenty of options for getting around. If we needed to get to, say, Tottenham Court Road, we would walk to Lancaster Gate station and get the Central line train. On the other hand, if we needed to get to King's Cross, we would walk to Paddington and get the Circle or City & Hammersmith line train.

      Also the SSL low frequency had great potential to be the key factor in how much of a loss it was - doing the routes the other way around would have made it less "oh, I have to wait 6 minutes" (even if it was actually 1), and more "can you walk faster than the Central line" than the "can you walk faster than make the change".

    Hi Geoff - at the start of this, on the platform of Bond Street, there's a door behind you on the opposite side of the tunnel from the platform, the floor of which is couple of inches above the height of the rails and below platform level. What on Earth is that doing there?!
    I seem to remember they only crop up at a few platforms on the westbound branch of the Central Line between Bond Street and perhaps Holland Park? I've puzzled over them before, but no one seems to see them or know what they're for. Any ideas?

    • @proper_charlie
      @proper_charlie 4 роки тому

      @@OneKnifeYeHand Quite probably. Given the stations I think these doors appear at were all part of the original stretch of the Central Line, I would guess they were built for some purpose, possibly now forgotten and now are left empty, because, let's face it, getting to that door is going to contravene several health and safety policies.
      I was looking at the TfL station diagrams to see if they were marked on them. They're not and nor do they seem to obviously connect to any other part of the station. I'm not even certain they're all on the westbound platforms at those stations, but I am sure the doors of mystery appear at more than one station on that stretch of the Central Line.

    It’s definitely faster to walk. I use to live right over there ❤️

      Sometimes it is faster to walk. But it is faster to walk than it would be to take the DLR because the distance between some two stations on the DLR are so close, it would be even faster to walk the distance. E.g, Pontoon Dock - West Silvertown

    For the Victoria, Warren Street to Euston?

      If you are coming in on a Circle, etc train to Euston Square then comparing Euston to Warren Street would be a fair comparison. IIRC there is supposed to be a direct connection between Euston Sq and Euston soon without having to get out and walk aboveground. If they are starting from a Victoria Line train then the person that stays on will win easily. Probably the same if they start on a Northern Line train since the interchange at Euston is an easy one IIRC.

    I found the City Mapper is so clever. My hotel was near Bayswater some time ago. Whenever the apps suggest me to take Central Line, it asked me to walk to Queensway!!
    Next thing: I ordered your books from Amazon!!! I will get them in April. Can I have your signatures when I am in London?. haha..

    If you race from warren street to euston station on the victoria line, and both the start and finishing points are on ground level, I think that could be close...

    I'd suggest Ealing Broadway-Hanger Lane and Roding Valley-Buckhurst Hill. Both of those could plausibly take longer on the Central Line than on foot.

    You should try, can you walk faster than the tyne and wear metro when you are up in the north east. That would be interesting.

    Victoria/Jubilee: To go from Walthamstow to south of the river, TFL often says to go via central London rather than a bus and DLR via Stratford. That could be worth a race.

    Myself and my girlfriend decided to try St Pancras to Mornington Crescent and she beat me doing the walk by 1 minute. She also narrowly beat me to Camden Town by taking the tube from Mornington Crescent.
    Euston to Warren Street from the Victoria Line entrance at Euston would be interesting

    Couple of years back, I told my to friends on a trip to London, it was quicker to walk from King's Cross Station to Euston Station. Bet taken up.
    I walk to Euston and then waited for them to turn up, 2 mins later they arrived, I then informed them I pop in St Pancras International and took some photos as well.
    Not impressed either of them.

    I took the tube from Bond Street to Lancaster Gate then walked to Paddington yesterday when I was on my way back from Vidcon, would have been useful to know going to as half the tube lines were closed!
