    To find a flight school near you:
    Go to the VA's WEAMS tool at < inquiry.vba.va.gov/weamspub/buildSearchInstitutionCriteria.do > website and put 'flight school' in the “program type” drop down menu. Then click on your state to bring up a list of all VA approved Flight schools. You should be able to identify if they are fixed wing or Helicopter, or both by clicking the 'programs' tab. Search the school's website to find out if they are affiliated with a degree program. Don't forget to search the surrounding states if you live near the boarder.
    But wait there’s more. . . . Some colleges have their own flight schools and you won't find them listed as flight schools.
    If you use the same WEAMS tool and put ‘Institute of Higher learning' in the “program type” drop down menu, you have another type of school available. There may be a lot of colleges to go through. So, it might be easier to google search something like 'college aviation program [and your state's name]' to get a smaller list to go through. You can also use the GI Bill comparison tool to look up schools in your area and see what programs they have that way.
    - For more financial aid
    Go to FAFSA through < studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa >. It will tell you how much you are authorized. Your college will then ask you if you would like to accept the loans and you will have to fill out paperwork saying you want; none, enough to cover expenses, the whole amount you are authorized. you select the full amount and the school will disburse the amount after a bit more paperwork. I know this is generic, but it all starts with the FAFSA paperwork.
    These tools should be able to help you find something you can live with. Be sure to also consider 2 year community college flight programs. Some of those are just as good as any 4 year program, and they might get you going faster.
    - Medical questions:
    Be extremely careful about what disabilities you have in your VA record. The FAA medical asks about VA disabilities. You can lie but the FAA can and has pulled VA medical records before to see what pilots where getting. In 2005 the FAA actually revoked the licenses of 46 Airline pilots who weren’t being honest about their disabilities with the FAA.
    www.nytimes.com/2005/07/20/us/us-says-46-pilots-lied-to-obtain-their-licenses.html
    The FAA has a list of disqualifying medical conditions and medications. “An airman who is medically disqualified for any reason may be considered by the FAA for an Authorization for Special Issuance of a Medical Certificate.” Things like Sleep Apnea do require a Special Issuance. It is an extra bit of effort, but you still get to fly. The link to the list of disqualifying conditions is below.
    www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/medical_certification/faq/response6/
    For some chronic illnesses that are not listed as "disqualifying," there may be a decision matrix that requires the medical examiner to gather extra information and defer to the FAA for a special issuance. Sleep apnea is one of these items. For a longer list see the link in the description.
    www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/avs/offices/aam/ame/guide/dec_cons/disease_prot/
    While your illness might not prohibit you from flying, a particular medication can. the FAA has a comprehensive list of medications and medication types that will prohibit you from flying. this list should be consulted anytime you are prescribed something as a part of your "I'M SAFE" checklist.
    www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/avs/offices/aam/ame/guide/pharm/dni_dnf/
    For medical defects, which are static or nonprogressive in nature, (for example, color vision deficiency) a Statement of Demonstrated Ability (SODA) < www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/avs/offices/aam/ame/guide/app_process/exam_tech/item23-24/ > may be granted in lieu of an Authorization."
    Good luck,

I totally didn't understand how my GI Bill benefits worked. I was going to school full-time and didn't know what I was doing. So now that I'm older, it's super awesome to know what I have at my disposal. It's weird how these things work out. I posted on my Facebook "It's still my dream to be a pilot," and then almost right away someone said "You can use your GI Bill for that," and it basically led me here. So, good lookin' out.

I’m 18 graduated from high school and I’m stuck between joining the army now and working up the ranks as I pay for ground and flight school or getting a 4 year degree and then in the future joining the army as an officer and trying to fly. I am not experienced in what I'm about to suggest, but. . . It seems like you might want to find a college that has both a flying program, and an JROTC program. The JROTC program pays a bit and commissioning in the military offers some student loan repayment. Look in to it and call some colleges to see what is out there.

    I would highly recommend against taking out student loans, whether subsidized or unsubsidized for a PPL. You cannot predict the true cost of a PPL, there are too many variables; let the VA pay.
    GI bill will pay for a private if it is apart of a degree program. There are a bunch of community colleges across the country that will take you from 0hrs to CFI and MEI for free with the GI bill. (central Oregon community college, Mercer community college, Baltimore community college etc).
    I would also recommend against liberty and other 4 year programs. Get your ratings, get hired, and start getting flight experience. Your #1 priority is to become an employed pilot. Don't slow down or delay that by dicking around with a four-year program.
    Well put together video

    • @BurnoutsAndRotorblades
      @BurnoutsAndRotorblades  3 роки тому

      The VA will absolutely NOT pay for PPL as of September of 2017. Even if it is a part of a degree program. I had mine paid for just before the cutoff. Call the VA if you do not believe me. You can not get all those ratings and stay under the VA's annual funding caps for school in 2 years. The flight training alone is too expensive and there is no waiver. I would be happy to show you where this is stated. I have gone through all this and lived every piece of advice in this video.

    Been at this for the past four years trying to find a way using g.i. bill, Montgomery and VR&E. After all options at every school in the u.s. and multiple counselors, only option was to use g.i. and attend a degree program in which the g.i. bill ONLY covered the non flying classes. I.e. comms, history etc while getting private. Otherwise it can be obtained paying 100% out of pocket.
    Once I got the private, VR&E kicked and and fronted everything from then on. It's on individual basis if they'll even cover that as well. The rules are only becoming more strict as well.
    So the blue prints for vets are as follows, i JUST got through doing it: NO free flight training until you get a private. Stash away 30k because the FAA will make you see medical personnel if you take meds, have ptsd, previous alcohol problems etc. 25-30k will cover the med bills and private unless you opt to use a loan and do part 141 through college, then 10k will cover med bills for FAA. Also, have tons of patience as the FAA moves very slow on paperwork.

Now going to make VR&E pay for the rest and be the first veteran diagnosed with ptsd to hold a commercial. What I’m getting out of this is the best way to maximize benefits using the Post 9/11 at a degree/ flight program. Since your flight time is considered a lab, the VA will cover the cost, correct?
    With out the GI bill I’m guessing the degree/flight program would cost upwards of $160k or more. Will the Post 9/11 cover all of this?

      @BurnoutsAndRotorblades  Рік тому

      Flight time is considered a lab. The post 9/11 will pay for it all, but the VA gets a negotiated price with the schools. This is better known as the yellow ribbon program. If I wasn't using the GI Bill I would not get the degree program. I would just go to flight school.

    Thank you for making this video, and answering everyone's comments below. I'm getting out in a couple years and doing my due-diligence now. There's not a whole lot of information out there, and this helped a lot. Could you explain to me more about the BAH. You mentioned you get 100% BAH during flight labs. Could you elaborate more on what a flight lab is, and how often it's done throughout lets say a 2 year online college degree program? I've been pretty set on finding a flight school that works with a college nearby so I can receive 100% BAH instead of doing online classes.

    • @BurnoutsAndRotorblades
      @BurnoutsAndRotorblades  4 роки тому +1

      So, you get 100% of the Post9/11, SSgt W/dependent, rate BAH for your area when you are taking "In-residence" classes. For online classes you get half of whatever that is. A flight lab is how the college makes flying part of the classroom curriculum. This is akin to how a chemistry class would have a lecture portion and a lab portion. Because the flight lab is part of the class, and in-residence classes get paid full rate BAH, when you are taking a flight lab of an otherwise online degree, you get the full rate. I put a link to the page explaining this below. I hope this helps.

      When you do your financial aide paperwork for FAFSA through fafsa.ed.gov.

      That's exactly is my question too! Once i do Fafsa, what's next?
      1. If you could write a step-by-step process until i get my PPL without paying anything, that would be great.
      2. Once i get my PPL, i can dumb my degree and it wont affect anything?

    • @BurnoutsAndRotorblades
      @BurnoutsAndRotorblades  2 роки тому +1

      1. Enroll in the school
      During this process, you will fill out the FAFSA and find out what you qualify for as far as Pell Grants and loans.
      2. Start taking classes.
      This will start the GI Bill BAH coming your way if you qualify.
      3. either wait until you have the money from pell grants/BAH, or take out a loan.
      4. Pay back loans if you took them.
      At certain points during the year, If you qualify, you can receive pell grants. If you took the loan at the beginning of the year to start flying, use the pell grants if you qualified for them, to pay back the loans. Also, use the BAH to pay it back if you don't need it to live on.
      5. stash away "extra" GI Bill BAH/Pell Grant money to pay for checkrides and extra flight hours.
      6. show your PPL to the school so they can credit you with the completed cert.
      You have to be taking classes the entire time!

    I’m just a little bit confused, university of Alaska anchorage has a flight program in the form of an AAS or BS. The VA acknowledges the college for the g.i. This is digging into the weeds and is a really good question so thank you for asking. Each program a college offers has to be approved by the VA independently. So the Aviation maintenance program or the welding program are independently certified. The VA is hard on flight programs and drags its feet so they may be uninterested in, unqualified for, or simply waiting on approval from the VA.

      You can usually transfer up to 50% of outside credits towards a degree program at a new school. GI bill will cover flight training (not including PPL) as part of a degree program. I will warn that if you can do this through a less expensive school I would. Embry-Riddle is one of the most expensive schools and will eat up your benefits quickly. Take a look at Liberty University for a more cost effective option.

      BurnoutsAndRotorblades I currently have 18 mo left until ets.. can I take two online classes using TA and take out a subsidized loan to knock out my PPL before ever enrolling into my community college of choice that is partnered with a nearby flight school?

    • @BurnoutsAndRotorblades
      @BurnoutsAndRotorblades  4 роки тому +1

      1) you will have to get the PPL on your own. As I say in the video, once you have access to student loans, use those to pay for the PPL. then use FAFSA and BAH to pay it all back. In that way it will pay for it if you consider it all Uncle Sam's money from different pots.
      2) You are correct. When you are doing flight training you are taking "in residence" classes so you qualify for full rate. When you are taking classes online or "distance learning" you get the half rate. If you are not in a flight class one term, which will happen, you will be pro-rated to half rate for that time.
      3) I worked full time and made time for family when I did mine. So, doing this is completely feasible.
      Keep in mind, there is a minimum number of classes the college requires you to take from their school before giving you a degree. I don't know the number exactly, but it is a large percentage.
      as long as you qualify for the subsidized loans through FAFSA.govm that sounds like a great idea.

    The part 141 route makes the most financial sense but 2 things confuse me. The VA will only pay for flight training after you obtain your PPL but the PPL is incorporated into the curriculum. So do you have to pay the part 141 university, out of pocket, until you obtain your PPL. Secondly, the VA website says the Post 9/11 pays up to the full in-state cost of tuition and fees. Does this include the cost of flight labs at the University or are they incorporated into the cost of tuition? I would think that this degree would have a premium on top of there normal tuition for their non-flight degree programs.

    • @BurnoutsAndRotorblades
      @BurnoutsAndRotorblades  3 роки тому

      For your first question, "do you have to pay the part 141 university, out of pocket, until you obtain your PPL?" There are a few answers. You can get a PPL anywhere and the school will give you credit for it. One way to get money for this is, if you qualify for FAFSA Pell grant money, use the pell grant money to pay for the PPL while taking your other classes. With the post 9/11 GI Bill, you get BAH, you can use that to pay for the PPL. But as far as I know, the website for the VA says one of the requirements is for you to have your PPL.
      Although. . .
      I have heard from other people that this is not always the case. I have reached out to several schools and asked the question but I have not heard back from a single one. I would call the school you are thinking about going to and ask them directly.
      For your second question, "Does [the full 'in-state' cost of tuition and fees] include the cost of flight labs at the University or are they incorporated into the cost of tuition?" This is a more simple question. The flight lab fees are part of the tuition and are covered by the GI bill. Be careful if you are going to a school outside your state because then you have a cap to worry about.
      I hope this helps. if you need anything else, don't hesitate to ask.

      Most schools that take GI Bill benefits are already yellow ribbon program participants. If they are not, I would consider looking at another school, unless the tuition is already low enough that it wouldn't make a difference. As understand it, Yellow ribbon is just an agreement the school make to not overcharge the GI Bill by lowering their price to a specified point.

      There are a few schools around the country that will do full flight training from PPL to CFII. I have not gone to any of them so I can't speak to which ones offer what. You can use your completed degree to transfer credits and there won't be much left to take aside from flying Lessons. There will still be some classroom stuff. Every college I have dealt with has a minimum of degree credits that need to be taken at that institution.

    • @BurnoutsAndRotorblades
      @BurnoutsAndRotorblades  4 роки тому +1

      No school will let you show up and plop down a degree from somewhere else and just take the flight labs. That is essentially just vocational flight training. If you don't want to enroll in the degree program you can use your GI Bill in a part 141 vocational flight program. Remember this changes your annual maximum GI bill benefit. That coupled with the fact flight school is very taxing on the GI bill might drain it pretty quickly. Not a big deal if it's the last thing you want to do with your GI Bill. However, you also miss out on any student financial aide and the BAH that comes with a degree program.
      If you do want to enroll in the degree program, you can use some of the credits you already have to lighten the load on meeting the overall requirements of the program. I pulled this right off the Liberty website "Liberty will allow up to 30 hours of Experience Plus credit that will be awarded in the form of transfer credit. Liberty allows a maximum of 90 hours of transfer credit for a bachelor’s degree."
      To me, this means you can use all your associates courses and also get credit for your PPL in the program. It's basically how it worked out for me when I did it so I can verify from first hand experience.
      I am not an expert on Vocational Rehabilitation, but I know it can be used for flight training. If you foresee having a disability rating that qualifies you for that program, it might be the better option.
      Sorry for the long response. I hope it helps.

      Louisiana Tech University might be worth looking in to for an aviation program. They are listed on WEAMS for an Aviation Program and they do have a VA office. I will put a short list, but not a complete list of other school choices below. That WEAMS tool is a very powerful resource if you devote some time to it.
      University of Louisiana Monroe
      www.solacc.edu/admissions/applying-for-helicopter-aviation
      You can also use the GI Bill comparison tool to look up schools in your area and see what programs they have that way.
      In my quick look around you, it doesn’t look like there is anything conveniently located in your town, but sometimes it’s just part of the struggle. I had to drive 5 hours from Las Vegas to Salt Lake City, UT every weekend for months because the flight school I was using lost it’s VA approval. Salt Lake was where the nearest school associated with my college was located. It wasn’t fun. I slept in my car a lot, but it’s what I had to do.
      These tools should be able to help you find something you can live with. Make sure to look for 2 year community college programs as well. Some of those are just as good as any 4 year program, and they might get you going faster.

    Looking into this for the past year or so. Any tips/recommendations on doing stuff while still active duty? I've got 5 years to retirement. I've got a little over 3000 hours as a Flight Engineer (KC-10). From what I understand, I can apply 500 hours from my engineer time to the 1500 minimum required for the ATP (its a 3:1 ratio 500 max applied, so i'm well over the max).
    I have some stuff from my CCAF, though I'm not perusing that, for "reasons" (useless degree, and from what I was told by our education center, the new MilTA program makes it so you now have to choose between CCAF and a real degree).
    There's a community college near me that offers a 2 year program (A.S. degree) that I've been looking into that goes from 0 to commercial, Mercer County Community College out of Trenton NJ. Problem with it is that all of the classes are basically in-person only, online is basically non-existant, even for the basic shit like Math and English. I need online due to constant trips/deployments, unable to do in-person because of this.

    • @BurnoutsAndRotorblades
      @BurnoutsAndRotorblades  4 роки тому +1

      It sounds like you have done a fair bit of research. You are correct about the CCAF. If you finish it, you won't be allowed to take any more associate level degree courses using MilTA. However, you can basically CLEP your way to a degree with CCAF and some schools will accept the whole thing as transfer credit.
      The ATP is a long way off and that 1000 hours that you need includes a lot of sub requirements that may eat into your 500 hours of transferrable FE time. It's nice to know that exists, but it won't help you until way later, if at all.
      I am reasonably certain the VA put an end to having PPL paid for, even if it is part of the curriculum for a degree program. Either way, you'll have to pay for that one out-of-pocket. Honestly, get a loan and knock it out, then use FAFSA money to pay it back. You can use Post 9/11 BAH if you keep taking college after Active Duty. It looks like Mercer's flight program is in WEAMS. The success of the program typically relies on how good the VA program rep is. I would defer back to taking CLEP tests to meet as many requirements as possible.
      I still think the best online flight training degree program is liberty university. I don't know exactly where you live but Mercer CC is near Trenton NJ, and Liberty University has a flight affiliate in Allentown, PA. 1.5 hrs per google maps. It might be worth giving them a call and seeing if they are an option for you.

Some colleges will take as much as half you bachelor towards another bachelor for their program. Absolutely. I'm full time as an A&P mechanic and I have a wife, who is a full time student, and two kids. I can't afford to not work. I fly when I can, usually on weekends, and all the classes are online. If you have work, the school can work with you to move around your schedule. As far as the flight training, any flight school thats worth anything will also work around your schedule. A few things to take care of first are; get an FAA medical done, find out which college has a flight partner near you (Liberty University or Charter College), Enroll in classes and get your classes and financial aide rolling. I see you have some drone flying videos on your age. It might be worth looking into FAA part 107 to be a licensed commercial drone pilot. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask. I will try to get back to you with a good answer as fast as possible.

    • @BurnoutsAndRotorblades
      @BurnoutsAndRotorblades  Рік тому

      The job of construction helicopter is not something they let low time pilots take on. I would say that it has more to do with being an incredibly experienced helicopter pilot and a lot less to do with operating a crane. The helicopter is only a "crane" for a few minutes, but it's always a helicopter. I'm not trying to downplay your experience with a crane, but I assume a good crane operator knows a substantial amount about the equipment he's running. The same goes for helicopters. All that to say, it's not a simple transition as far as I can see. If you really want to do it, go to a flight school and get started with a discovery flight or a private pilot's license. Then you'll want to get some long-line training.

For flight schools, I have worked with Veracity Aviation in Seguin Texas, Utah Helicopter in Spanish Fork Utah, Airwork in Las Vegas, and Elite Flight training in Las Vegas. I would highly recommend staying away from Elite flight training. The other three schools are awesome and I would recommend them in the order I mentioned them above. However, I used all of them through Charter College so the way they handle things is a bit different now. Every school has had to come up with an alternative plan. So, call the school closest to you to figure out the finer details.

(Preferably just save up the cash instead)

      Only if that flight school is a partner school with Liberty University. If you want to fly with Uncle Sam's money, you have to jump through Uncle Sam's hoops. You have to have your PPL done to get VA funding, but you can start ONLINE CLASSES without a PPL. Start ONLINE classes with Liberty and take the subsidized loan and Pell Grant money you will likely qualify for through FAFSA and pay for your PPL while taking ONLINE classes paid for through Tuition Assistance if you're active duty or GI Bill if you are out already. Then pay the PPL loan back with subsequent Pell Grant money and VA GI Bill BAH when you ETS. Online classes can be taken anywhere. Go to the Liberty website and make sure there is a flight partner in your area. If the school is a Liberty flight partner then it accepts VA.

      You have asked a very timely question sir. I am putting together a video that will answer this but for now I will give you some resources that will help you find the answer to your question. I will not however, say yes or no because that is between you and the FAA. The following is basically cut and pasted from the script of a video I'm doing on using Vocational Rehabilitation to get your Pilot's License.
      "Be extremely careful about what disabilities you have in your VA record.

It's probably the result of a bunch of people taking advantage a long time ago. It sucks, but it's a lot easier finding the way to work within the system than trying to apply logic to it, getting mad about it, or trying to change it in the short term. So, to make the best use of your benefits you want to find a part 141 school that is partnered with a college. Liberty University and community colleges are good places to start looking.

      @BurnoutsAndRotorblades  4 роки тому +2

      I am going to highly recommend doing it with a degree program. You ill be missing out on well over $10,000 per year if you don't.
      The Post 9/11 gi bill without a degree program is vocational flight training which is paid for in a different way.
      "A vocational program at a stand-alone Part 141 pilot school, we’ll pay for the net cost of training up to a yearly limit (depending on your level of eligibility and remaining entitlement). You won’t be eligible for a housing allowance or money to help buy books and supplies."
      www.va.gov/education/about-gi-bill-benefits/how-to-use-benefits/flight-training/
      First you cost will be higher:
      This does not include Private pilot. Anything over the annual cap, you will have to pay for out of pocket.
      Second you will miss out on free money:
      The BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) is paid out at E5 with dependant rate. This is aroun $1200 per month. You only get this if you use a degree program. With a degree program you could also qualify for Pell Grant through FAFSA. That is another $5400 in free money. All this is money-in-your-pocket that can be spent on more flying. That's not to mention the scholarships that schools offer. I should also say, All this is TAX FREE.
      Third missed opportunity:
      Most airlines like to see a degree. If you are a like-skilled and qualified pilot, someone with a bachelor degree will beat you out.
      If you still want to do it vacationally, the link above will break it all down for you.
