  • In this Episode of @DilsewithKapilSibal Sr. Adv. Kapil Sibal brings together three extraordinary women who are luminaries in their own fields to discuss how women navigate a world inherently unfair to them.
Niraja Gopal Jayal is a political scientist by training, and taught at India's premier graduate university for the social sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University. She has also had stints at the King's College in London and has been associated with the London School of Economics. Her book, 'Citizenship and Its Discontents: An Indian History', was heralded as having broken new ground in scholarship.
Neerja Chowdhury, a journalist with several decades of experience and who now works as a consulting editor with Indian Express has written one of last year's most talked about books, 'How Prime Ministers Decide.'
Malavika Rajkotia, who wrote 'Intimacy Undone: Marriage, Divorce and Family Law in India', is one of the best known family and divorce lawyers in India.
All three speak of background, privilege and the culture of social capital that makes it possible for women to rise and what women who do not have these suffer.

All the wonderful ladies mentioned that they are fortunate to have risen to their current positions. Acknowledging this is important because not everyone has such opportunities. Hearing those statements from the speakers reminded me of Immanuel Kant, who emphasized that equality is a fundamental right based on the inherent dignity of all individuals. However, this equality is often influenced by the circumstances of one’s birth.

Sir, and ladies in the discussion. Kindly do not ignore Bengal , where the Hon’ble CM is a woman, has has also sent about 38% women from bengal to the parliament in 2024 , without a set law to tell her to do so . I think this should be common knowledge and demands a mention in the otherwise interesting exchange of views .

Malavika Ji's arguments are so intricate and to the point, at time enlightening to a young man and at times makes him look at the mirror for his insecurities

The construction industry which is said to be the second largest employer, doesn't any more employ women after the construction materials and methods have changed - heavy cement blocks, concrete machines etc

I think there is less participation simply because of the lack of time due to household chores not being mechanised and financial incentive being very less in India as of now, this coupled with discrimination and lack of will to educate women and patriarchy is what makes it so difficult.

The fact of the matter is that their are constraints and road blocks in our social political and education system for women empowerment.t the lack of the higher education better health care facilities affordable transport system in rural and remote areas is also a road block.financial inequality and lack of resources and facilities are also a road block .

The current discussion is very thoughtful, but I don’t fully understand terms like “social capitalism.” I assume there is some sort of support from their families for the speakers in the discussion. The percentage of women in India with such support is likely very small. As a woman with vague ideas about contributing to politics, I recognize the immense impact this could have on millions of people.
Not only are there very few women in politics, but most of them also come from established political families. Political parties are focused on winability rather than looking at other sectors like teaching or journalism, where women have more opportunities. There seems to be no real opportunity for women who want to try their best in politics.
My education has given me the perspective to understand the broader picture of women’s empowerment. Education and health are critical, but quality education and healthcare are often only available to those who can afford them. Fortunately, my parents were able to support my education, but many others are not so lucky.
Being a single woman comes with its own challenges. Married women might have supportive or toxic families, but single women face the stress of overcoming societal taboos. This is just my opinion, but these issues are significant barriers to women’s empowerment.

"Male scholars tend to cite male scholars" this is just a pseudo feminist, "playing victim" and a baseless crap. Me being a part of the Science research fraternity, I can guarantee, we tend to cite works from more sophisticated journals and conferences. Hardly, there is any research article that consists only of female authors. So, I don't know what the base of her controversial comment is.
