“If you don’t practice, the trumpet gonna send you a bill. And you’re gonna have to pay for it” -Arturo Sandoval 🔥
Awesome stuff Josh!
Right?! Some real talk there. Thanks man!! 🙏🙏
Words from the heart. Arturo knows practice.
This series is wonderful. Thank you Josh for creating this beautiful reference.
Very similar comment to one from Doc Severinson..the trumpet is a demanding mistress, or words to that effect.
Josh! You’re the man! Thank you for putting this together for the trumpet community! 🎺🎤📓
Thanks, Chris!! I really hope that the trumpet community finds this to be a helpful resource!
This series will be a beautiful reference. The trumpet community is very strong and supportive of each other. It's a joy to see!
YES. I've only watched the first 10 minutes so far and can tell that this is absolute gold. Thank you for doing this amazing service to the trumpet world!
Thanks, Marcus. Much appreciated!! 🙏🙏
There is much to learn here. The Q&A format is great!
Thank you for producing this. I returned to trumpet playing 47 years after high school, six years ago. Other than my hours in band and orchestra class in the 60s, I am self-taught. Playing with two community orchestras and three community bands has provided structure and focus for me, until last March. Like some interviewed here, I fell off the practice wagon briefly when the rehearsals stopped, but got going again on my own and am now quite busy rehearsing virtually for orchestra concerts to be presented on line, and individually recording tracks to band concerts, in which I play more than one part, and sometimes even trumpet, flugel horn and French horn parts. Everybody here gave me something that was encouraging or something I can add to what I am doing to keep improving.
Thanks for the note, Mark! Glad you're back in action and so involved with everything virtually!!
Mark, congratulations on reconnecting with your trumpet passion! You're obviously having a wonderful time! Thanks for sharing your story. There is much to learn here.
I just came across this today, really worthwhile. I had to comment on the first one here, Michael Sachs. We all know what he has become but I saw and heard him in 1988, shortly before he became Principal Trumpet in the Cleveland Orchestra. A young trumpeter, he was with the Houston Symphony and performed the Hummel onstage, the first time I had ever heard it live. He was superb, great power, great tone, great articulation. He was so confident, he stood on stage with his feet apart reminding me of a bull fighter. I never forgot that performance and it is nice (in this video) to see him as a veteran of the trumpet.
Thank you!! So glad you enjoyed it. Michael Sachs has been an inspiration to me since I first heard him in high school (I'm originally from NE Ohio), his sound and presence in a live performance are definitely unforgettable.
This came out great, Josh! Can’t wait for the rest of the episodes!
Thanks, Matt!!
Likewise, looking forward to more of these cool interviews. 😎
This lets the AmateurCornet player namely ME appreciate the complete dedication it takes to be a pro brass player!.
I like the idea of knowing when it’s time to put it away!.
Great insight 🎺🎶🎺🎶👏👏👏thanks for these pearls of wisdom 👍
Also I have all these great names now to check out which is brilliant 😊

Richard I agree. This is already a fabulous series and it's just beginning...!
Alright! Karin Bliznik really resonated with me!
Nice!! She really had a lot of great things to say - super nice too. Plus, a fellow BU alum.
Josh, your the best.
The way you help musicians FOR FREE.
You are a real blessing.

Absolutely fantastic, and invaluable!

@@JoshRzepkaMusic Great job, Josh! I'm enjoying this video again. I love the passion and the focus of these amazing musicians. It's inspiring and very educational to me and I don't even play the trumpet. Thanks again!
Thank you!! 🙏
fabulous! So great to see such awesome content you are putting out Josh!
Thanks, Trent!! Much appreciated.
@@JoshRzepkaMusic crazy amount of editing!!!
What a great video!! Thank you for taking all of the time to piece this together. I can't wait for the next one!
Thank you!! It was a blast to make, even if the editing was tedious.
Many thanks for all you put into this!
Thanks!! Glad you found it helpful!
Roger Ingram did another video where he references his extensive, integrated "practice day" - lifestyle, really - and his use of Ernest S. Williams' "The Secret of Technique Preservation". Really sold me on it. I bought the book and started running it, every day, and WOW two weeks later I noticed an overall improvement in every aspect of my playing. Suddenly everything was easier. Now, it's a book for working pros, so if you're not quite at that standard, it's going to reveal very quickly where your weak areas are, and that means going back to some more fundamental books for those things. So it's ultimately a litmus test and a daily reality check, so I don't get into bad habits or get "road chops" from just rehearsing with one band all the time, etc. And if I don't get anything else done that day, I know I've at least done enough to guarantee a trend of improvement.
Thank you for that video and good guestions...👏👏
Glad you enjoyed it! The next video will be coming out tomorrow!
What a treat these videos are. Thanks for making this happen!
Thanks, Tom!!
Pure Gold! Thanks for putting this together.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
So many statements on regular practice. My favorite (not in this video): _If I take a day off, I know it. If I take two days off, my wife knows it. If I take three days off, everybody knows it._
Yup!! Although I've found as I get older and more secure with everything in my playing that a day or two off doesn't have any impact for me. Beyond one or two days ... then it's something I notice.
Hello Mr. Rzepka! :D Thank you so much for this amazing video! :D I'm really looking forward to see the next video!
I took some really important information from this video!
Greetings from Portugal!
Thank you for checking it out, I'm glad it was helpful to you!
Wow, Portugal! One day I hope to visit, it looks like a beautiful country.
Woo!!!
Thanks!!
Brilliant. Thank you for doing this project, Josh.
Thanks for checking it out! 🙏
great series! can't wait for the next one!
Thanks!! 🙏
This is an incredible video. Thanks for sharing Josh.
Thank you, Justin!
Love this! Lookin’ forward to the next video!
Thanks, Ray!!
@@JoshRzepkaMusic Josh please let the mute manufacturers know that what we as trumpet players need in a mute is a “sexy” sound or timbre to compete with the sax. The Harmon was and is a great option but we need a little less metallic and more of a sensual sound.
Great idea. Thanks for adding the side text. Very helpful for recall.
Thank you! I wanted to try and make it as helpful as possible.
just, WOW!! looking forward for next episode!!
Thanks!! 🙏
This is marvellous!! Thank you so much!!
Thank you!!
STACKED video my man. Can't wait for the rest.
Thanks, Josh!! 🙏
I feel like this should be on PBS, Discovery, BBC, etc.
Excellent content, captioning and editing.
Thank you!! I’ve got a bunch more to release, next on will be in July. Editing was definitely more than I realized…😂😂 but well worth it once it’s done.
Great video. Looking forward for the next one. Would love to hear more about how they learned, the struggles, the good and the bad. That would be really great for trumpeters who are in the process of mastering this instrument.
Thanks!! I’ll be exploring their teachers in the next video, some of their early stories in another future video, and one video specifically addresses past struggles.
Absolutely brilliant! How did you get in contact with all these great trumpeters?
Thank you! 🙏 Well a number of then I knew beforehand. I count Michael Sachs as one of my most influential teachers as I had the opportunity to study with him for nearly a year. A bunch of them I’ve become friends/acquaintances with over the year from ITG conferences, FB, and through friends. The few that I didn’t know ... I just reached out. They were all very friendly and personable. I will say, I didn’t hear back from everyone I reached out to, but I did hear back from most.
@@JoshRzepkaMusic Great! Thank you!
Nice work Josh. Very informative and helpful. So nice to hear about the realities of practice from the greats.
Thank you!
This is awesome. Thank you ☺️
Thanks for checking it out!
Freakin cool.
Thanks!!
Great concept! This is a great video for any trumpet player!
Thanks!
Also trombonist oboe & clarinet players as well. I can relate to this video
Great to hear! 🙏
Thanks, that's is so interesting!!!
Thanks for checking it out!!
Josh, this is a gold mine, thanks so much! It also proves that we´re all just humans trying to figure this instrument out.
Thanks!! Yup, that was a big takeaway for me too.
Brilliant
Thank you!! 🙏
Great video. Thank you!
Thank you! 🙏
This is brilliant, should be required viewing at conservatoires. Thank you Josh
Thank you, I appreciate the kind words!!
YOU DID IT AGAIN JOSH ! YOU DA MAN ! REMEMBER IF YOU DON'T PRACTICE THE TRUMPET WILL PLAY YOU !!! SO GO BLOW DAT HORN YAWL !
Thank you!! 🙏🙏 Yup, always time to shed!!
@@JoshRzepkaMusic AS ISAAC HAYES WOULD SAY , YOU DAMN RIGHT !!!
Great video Josh, Thank you for sharing it. Just subscribed your channel too, very interesting. Compliments
Thank you!!
That looks like Collins "S Line" radio gear in the background behind Michael Sachs. Is he a ham operator in his spare time?
Hey Roy, I just messaged Sachs, he confirmed that it was all Collins tube radio stuff mostly from the 1970s. He's apparently been a ham radio operator since he was 13. Nice catch!
Roy, a bit more information from Sachs from a follow-up email. "My main station is a Collins KWM2-A transceiver, 312B-5 VFO, and 30L-1 linear amplifier (all round emblem). I also have Collins 75A-4 and 51-S1 receivers and a 32S-3 transmitter that I use as well"
@@JoshRzepkaMusic I haven't been active in a while but I've kept up my ticket. My call sign is KE8SL.
Nice job Josh! Thanks! A few more cats that you might want to ask your questions to....Wynton Marsalis, Tom Harrell, John Faddis, Bobby Shew, Wayne Bergeron, David Stahl, Allen Vizzutti, Philip Smith, Doc Severinsen, Jeff Holmes.
That would be quite the lineup! I’ve got some things in the works for a follow up, nothing definitive yet. Need to finish this series first.
@@JoshRzepkaMusic I think if you told everyone on my list who you have already interviewed, they would jump on the bandwagon & be happy to be a part of that list!...esp. as you always include the players bio & web & social media contacts....helping to drive folks to their sites & they'll do the same for you.
Thank you so much for this, I'm a new subscriber from 'The Black Trumpeter's' Channel
You’re welcome! Great, welcome!! 🎺🎺
Mr. Josh - I think you’ll get even better traffic on your videos in this series if you include the question in the video title
Good point! I was struggling with how to title it. Any specific suggestions?
I just adjusted it - how about that?
Works for me!
At first I read the thumbnail as: “1 question 17 Trumpers” and thought it was an insight into how Trump supporters think.
😮😬🤣😂 not on this channel ... but I imagine its been done.
