I believe my favourite would be pine. Is the cup adjustable?
Fabuloso!!
🙏🙏
Very cool! (as always!)
Thanks!!
Anibal is an amazing sax player and cool guy!
Yup, sure is!!
I play the Tom Crown pixie for years now with a ‘normal’ hardware store plunger, this gives the authentic plunger sound. A comparison with the Tom Crown will be great. The Eb straight mute made by Denis Wick is also usable as a great pixy
Very happy to see the next installment in this series! I love that you did this!
Thanks!!
Great video, very motivating
Glad to hear! 🎺🎺
I love this series. It's both educational & delightful. Great entertainment! Thanks, Josh!
Thanks!🙏
Just what I needed today, thanks Josh!
So glad to hear!! Thanks for saying hi 🎺🎺🎺
Always great content!!!
Thank you!! 🙏 These videos really inspire me, very happy to be able to share them with everyone.
Plus it's a nice way to support Ukraine. Freedom & music. 🎶🇺🇦💙💛
Just noticed the *pep* mute coincidentally matches the beret Miles is wearing. PEPEPEPEP 🎶
Oh nice, yes. But Miles really only used a harmon…but definitely the most famous muted trumpet sound.
Always enjoy mute Mondays. I love the sound of both mutes. Would love to have more places these days to play with those mutes. Thanks for sharing. Welcome back.
Thanks!! Glad to be back.
Oh nice!!!
Thanks! This was a fun one.
This is so cool. Historic equipment. Josh, were these mutes also used in large philharmonic orchestras? Or mostly for jazz & popular music bands?
Def jazz / dance bands. But very historic, and very cool.
Love the old timey sound of both! The crooner is very unique
Thanks!! Yeah, really an awesome sound.
And nearly 100 year old mutes! The definition of old-timey. So cool.
A few months ago I asked about Tom Crown's Pixie... and now this one appears, and it's really cute. I would love to see a comparison between them. Please ! Keep it going with the Best Channel In The World about Mutes, awesome job 👏
Nobody knows more about mutes than Josh.
Especially loved the way it sounded when you played with both mutes together. Another great video!
you make it sound great at least. need to see if i can try one since plunger+pixie is such a fantastic sound
Josh: your *mute knowledge* is deep & your *mute skills* are fantastic! (Mutation?) 😎 Thank you for sharing with us.
Thanks!!
Sounds fantastic! Love that pixie / plunger combo
The focus in the air trick makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the tips
This is a great idea which I'm going to add to my warming up. Can this be applied to Double and triple (Tonguing)?
Excellent demonstration! Just picked one of these up on EBay in excellent condition with the original label and no rivets! I have been searching for one of these for years now and glad I found one to add to my ever growing collection of vintage mutes!
Nice!! Congrats, I saw that auction. Looks like a great one too. 🎺🎺
What do you think of the Denis Wick aluminum plunger?
Hey man, where can I buy this? It seems to be unavailable on Amazon US, UK and DE.
Wish I'd had one of these when I was on the road in the 70s. How long do the rubber bands last, and how hard is it to get extras/replacements?
Some people says that we have to use our breath as much as we could,to the point where we feel our abs is empty. if we don’t, if we breath more when we already have enough air in our body, that makes notes out of tune. But for me, as you make a story of gas tank, i really agree with and feel more comfortable when i use this method that you said. If this method working well for me, is it right to follow this?
I started turning to 442hz. It sounds closer to music records, am I wrong?
Where can I get the correct cork so it’s the right thickness
what app did you suggest for on online app, is there a UA-cam video out there perhaps?
I've used a guitar tuning video on UA-cam but the trumpets is a B flat instrument so I know I need one for trumpet
Very valuable lesson
Great advice. I would add, make sure you are hydrated too........
great video and great concept. how it compares with the classic practice mute ? it is louder ? the back pressure is lower ? thanks alot
I have a soulo harmon mute and it sounds great but c bellow staff and lower is hard to slot and feels stuffy
I have an upmute and i am a fan of it
Would you recommend replacing corks on mutes if you find that you have intonation problems after using a mute? Like all the notes are slightly flat or sharp?
That depends, usually they just need to be filed a little bit more. If the low G/F# speak well and then if the mute is designed well the intonation should be as good as it’s going to be. Occasionally they might be in the wrong place (too high/low on the mute), but typically it’s the thickness, and most often they need to be filed down a little bit.
I've discovered that my Denis Wick adjustable cup mute with the cup 100% closed up against the bell make a really good practice mute. Very quiet and in tune. There's some typical back pressure, but very playable.
Do you have any recommendations for jazz mouthpieces? I have a generic mouthpiece that came with the instrument, I want to upgrade eventually.
Thanks so much for this. I stole my brothers trumpet and the modern triple one was in the case. Thanks for explaining!
Great video. Sounds like you play quietly, your tone will improve as well as other fundamentals. I've always been a louder player, which I think might have been diminishing my playing abilities.
Wow! I don't know how I missed this video. <grin> I have a total of 6 harmons (with a lower case "h") including a couple of the ones here. I think my current fav is a copper Harmon, but I suspect it isn't as old as the one you've got cuz it has no stamp. It came to me looking like an old, beat-up penny, so I gave it new cork, a scratched finish, and a coat of lacquer to maintain the look. It still looks old and is the one I currently carry. I think brand new ones have a slightly different construction, and I don't have any idea when the design changed or how different it might sound from earlier versions. I do have an old Emo I bought back in the 60s. I think my teacher recommended it because of the buzz, and for a long time it was the only one I had. I also have a British Selmer Styratone, the LeBlanc, neither of which I would ever play in public, the Soulo (which is REALLY buzzy!), and a Windy City, whose buzz, for me, is really volume dependent and varies quite a bit. The copper Harmon's buzz is more consistent. It's also got a pretty easy blow, but is fairly heavy of course because of the copper. Great demo, as always!
This is such a good shout actually. However, I'm curious is there a truly wireless alternative perhaps for settings where you would wanna move around while playing and not have to worry about cables getting caught? Better still is there a way to adapt the mic you've mentioned for this use case? Perhaps a compact transmitter pack that will attach to the trumpet? I know Timmy Trumpet (the DJ) has a pretty compact setup that kinda achieves this, but I can't for the life of me fogger out what it is haha.
I have to practice late at night and use a straight mute .... have ro force myself to play very softly. I like the sound of that mute as it is more natural sounding. Probably too expensive for me 😅
I've just got hold of one! Was it made for a certain size bell? My notes cant centre with it, it's as if I'm playing half valved whilst it's in
Interesting, I haven't heard of that before. What trumpet are you using? What side bell? Did you reach out to Ed Hirschman through his website?
@@JoshRzepkaMusic I have the same issue on ALL my horns. Both cornets and trumpets. The horns just won't slot. They sent me another with some different caps, but it has the same problem. I was just on their website, and the ones they sell now have an extra washer, which owners of the 2nd Gen mute can buy for $10. I'm a tinkerer, and a while ago I decided to experiment a little. I took off the corks and tried holding the mute in place. I think allowing more air to escape helps a lot, so I put 3 corks on it, and I like it. I know the video says they actually rejected that idea, but if you have one that isn't working for you, you may be able to remove the corks carefully for future use and replace them with the standard set of 3 and get a very similar effect. I don't understand the physics of kazoos, trumpets, or mutes, so I don't know why it wasn't working for me, but if you consider the construction of a kazoo, it's basically an open tube with very little resistance. (You do sing into the larger end tho.) It seems to take very little to make the resonators buzz. I get the feeling that too much of the sound is trapped inside the mute, and that may not be required, although it may change the relationship of trumpet to buzz. On the other hand, you didn't seem to have much trouble with it, Josh.
Did you know which mute Charlie shavers use? Thx a lot
"Lil Darlin" sounds fabulous. Thanks for your helpful review.
Thank you!!
Magnifique!!!
Thank you!!
