The modern redesign of these things is one of the best in the series - keeps all the best aspects, removes the goofier ones (LEGO claws I'm looking at you) and perfectly evolves the design.
Cryer24597 Even though they were designed before the Lego men it's still fair to call them Lego claws.
Its only goofy to you because you look at them with modern preconceptions.
Yes the new Ice Warriors were ok....but i didn't like that groove in their head, that was revealed when their helmet is taken off, it just looked silly!

The original ice warriors were indeed scary for their time. And following episodes involving them also involved mega scary costumes and even more scary outfits for the officers. Its a shame that there hasn't been an episode bar one that has properly dealt with these beasts. the one and only Bernard breslaw of carry on fame was the first ice warrior
It's spelled "Bresslaw". The 6'7" actor is best remembered for playing an Ice Warrior. He passed away in the 90s. 😔🇬🇧

Probably one of my favourite death scenes in the entire franchise. Totally unnecessary and cements the Ice Warriors as the superior war-loving race in the series over the Sontarans imo. The Sontarans are clones of each other and, aside from Lynx, are more or less lacking individuality whereas Varga here is the driving personality of the story who is becoming more and more impatient and desperate about the hopelessness of his situation.
What he needs are scientists to give him materials for his ship so he and his crew can leave but instead, he is being offered help from a primitive local who knows nothing and his only bargaining chip is a fragile girl who also knows nothing and whose screams pierces ears almost as well as their sonic guns do.
TLDR; I believe that Varga and Zondal killing Stor is a move of frustration rather than bloodlust or conquest.
Scary stuff, give me more, costumes are so much more convincing than animation,

the only thing I can say is, Steven Moffat only let the ice warriors come back because of the changes. One of his complaints about the old ones were the voices, he said that the old voices made it impossible to hear them well. I personally disagree, but he is in charge and I'm just a university student.
They're showing it because it's the 50th anniversary, the channel is for all things Doctor Who and the majority of these clips are introducing people to the old Who story lines and I love it personally!!:)
The ice warriors scared the bejesus out of me as a small boy in 67 it was the voices,I really did hide behind our sofa.

The late great Angus Lennie, he is best known for playing Archibald Ives "The Mole"in the 1963 film "The Great Escape" and the chef Shughie McFee in the British sitcom "Crossroads".

I also enjoyed Daleksssss in Manhattan/Evolution of the Dalekssss, Human Nature/The Family of Blood, and The Firessss of Pompeii. Actually, the Human Nature 2 parter is one of my all time favoritesssss.

I would *love* for episodes 2 and 3 to be found. Of the fully or mostly existing Patrick Troughton stories 'The Ice Warriors' is my favorite. I like it a lot more than the more celebrated 'Tomb of The Cybermen' from the same season.
The Ice Warriors are back this Saturday!! I'm wondering if the rest of this season will feature other forgotten enemies, to lead up to the 50th anniversary? It seems like a logical idea......in my head anyway lol
I'm gonna have to go with this. I'm a huge classic series fan and I think the new hands are an improvement - the Ice Warriors sure got better off than the Silurians.
i like the old series and new series, every doctor has their own quirky personality so i understand what their trying to do. i love all the old aliens though, and i wish they kept the cybermen the same as the old ones, they were epic :(
Somewhere between lizards and Cybermen, the Ice Warriors scared me rigid in the 1960s. Had forgotten the sibilant voicessssssssss! Trying to remember - a Dalek death involved the person shaking and juddering; with Cybermen, the body would burn like magnesium; and the Ice Warriors zapped you and both things happened?

That is something we can agree on at the very least, the new regeneration keeps being used again and again, I liked how in the old series the effect changed every time. But they have said that he only regenerates if his body is already technically dead. See 'The Impossible Astronaut' River says that the Doctor was shot in the middle of the regeneration cycle, interrupting it, and that he was already dead when he was shot the second time.

Love and Monsters confused me... My only conclusion was that the episode was there to give Tenant and Piper a little break or a little less work to do while they filmed other episodes. It's the only thing I can think of that makes sense.

I loved season 5, but was a bit disappointed with parts of season 6. Especially the God Complex. It is preposterous to state that Rory and the Doctor have no faith what so ever. I just thought the concept was dumb and was upset that we didn't get to see the Doctor's room. Why does he even have a room if he has no faith? Rory doesn't have one! Very good finale made up for it though! :D

Well thats your opinion, in my opinion Matt is a brilliant doctor, and because of Moffat's story it made me enjoy Doctor Who alot more then I used to with 9 or 10 and I thank him for that although I must say I really did enjoy 9 the most.
well the whole regeneration deal wasn't gone into too much detail in the classic series. As a joke, Patrick Troughton did imply in an interview that the next doctor might be a female, but that's all we really had with it.

Neil Gaiman intended it to be a confirmation that Time Lords could change gender (see: his blog); and therefore, by extension, Steven Moffat.
Like I said before, sometimes the answer's a real-world one, not a fictional one.
(Also, the same gender 12 times isn't a HUGE coincidence. Someone flipping a coin a hundred times and always getting heads would be a *HUGE* coincidence - getting heads 12 times in a row is weird, but not unbelievable).

But that's the fun of it! Yes, the quality in terms of effects and writing is better objectively in the new series, but the characterization and creative ideas in both are truly fantastic. And I wouldn't even go so far as to call the quality 'bad': it was black and white because that's what TV was back then, and for its time with very limited funding the effects aren't actually that bad at all. Besides, there are more DVDs for the new series episodes than old so fans can mostly only see it here.
It's unlikely, yes, but not impossible by any stretch of the imagination. The odds are daft, but there's no reason to think that they can't happen just because it seems like they shouldn't.

I like these Ice Warriors far more than the New Who redesign.
Yes I have seen them outside this clip, and yes the new ones are bulkier, just look at the new ones in the trailer, they almost fill the entire hallway. As for the claws, they added a thumb. Yay now they can handle door nobs with relative ease and can now manipulate objects better, so much less realistic. I mean really, even with the three fingers I don't know how they made any kind of machine, their fingers are just too bulky. As for the leg/hip things, I'm not sure what you are referencing

No, the stories of Peladon ruined the "threatening" essence of the Ice Warriors by turning them into pacifists. Cold War was a nostalgic return to its roots.
I think that's the great thing about them tho. they are the 1st villains to become allies. and it works. because they aren't the same as the other villians. they don't hate like daleks, they aren't emotionless like cybermen. and while honor bound and pround of war not obsessed with it like sontarans

That's because you're disliking something for no reason; the new Silurians are disappointing because they just look like scaly people rather than the monsters we all know and love, but with the Ice Warriors they've made a genuine effort to make them as similar to the old ones as possible, and already you're judging them for no reason.

I disagree. I think the old lego like hands are definitely the weakest part of the design. I'll be glad to see them updated. Mind you, I'm so pleased to see that they've kept the design virtually the same

Yes he was and she was, but then again we do have Romana's odd regeneration sequence where she went through multiple different bodies, some not even seeming remotely anything like Time-Lord-esq based on all we had seen before and since then. And guess what? That was the classic series! I love how some people seem to ignore all of Classic Who's unexplained little tidbits while harping on something very similar about New Who, seems a little hypocritical doesn't it?

the 10th doctor is already gone boy, and he did regenerate. And yes the timelords gave the 2nd doctor a choice, all of which looks human, but remember, these are the bloody timelords, they can do what they want, the doctor on his own is limited. I never said that the timelords made romana regenerate, where did you get that from? I apologize, I meant 'the warriors of the deep' not 'the sea devils' my bad on that part. But I also own many books which corroborate my statement on that episode.

The Twin Dillema is pretty awful but Colin's performance almost saves. Tennant in the End of Time however...
Time and the Rani isn't a complete disaster... Delta and the Bannermen is so much worse. But still better than stuff like Love and Monsters.
This is what I was trying to say several comments back. The whole "changing-gender" thing was a retcon by the current writers - *of course* it doesn't perfectly fit with everything that came before.
Trying to find a happy medium between old canon and new canon will drive you mad - better just to suspend your disbelief :)

the reason they looked like rubber in classic who was because they had no budget at the time, the metallic appearance is vastly improved over the old look. As for the lack of claws, they now have a thumb, big deal breaker right there, they can now open doors! those blasted designers are ruining the design! the horror!
This is more like a school play in quality. The new series is good though the plots are weak in the latest series.
