Is Car Shield Worth It? Chevy Malibu Gets its 2nd Transmission

- Hey Good People,
I had a 2019 Chevrolet Malibu in the shop this past week. This customer has Car Shield coverage and they came to the rescue for this customer. In this video, you get a peek at the process and the end result of a successful Car Shield claim.

Alex we want tutorials, diagnostics, 24/7 livestreams…all that😂
😂😂😂 I’ll see what I can do lol
I can’t believe the car shield is not replacing it with a reman transmission. The amount of time that he spent paying premiums in between The transmission replacements, he absolutely could have purchased a new transmission. Props that they’re actually replacing it, but shame on them for not replacing it with a reman. I’m sure the amount of monthly payments he has made he would be able to purchase one
Former Malibu owner here. This 9th generation ran from 2016-Present (well until the day GM gives it the axe). This white one is the refresh for 2019-Present. They dropped the 6speed for the CVT. I had the 2016 LT and it was one bittersweet car. The fact this white one made it to 250K+ miles blows my mind but now I think about it GM finally listened to the customers with issues from 2016-2018. The engine blew on mine at 59K (even with recalls applied, oil changes to date, etc). Per GM they threw in a long block under powertrain warranty. That job would have cost me nearly $10k out of pocket. Around 120K my trans was acting odd. Long story short it would roll back on an incline, abrupt acceleration, eventually towards its death it wouldn't shift past 3rd gear anymore once it warmed up. I've gotten quotes for 3-5k or either used or re-man units. The highest quote was $7k for a brand new one. Sadly my car was only worth $4k at the end of the day. I sold it and went back to Honda. Total years of ownership: 6 years.
@gsm19911 Carmax. Sent straight to auction.
gmc terrain shares the same engine as the malibu and man what a great engine. I think GM learned from 2010's how bad their engines were cracking. and they got their act together. As for the CVT, i really dont understand what is going on, who keeps signing off on those transmission, cvt's are bankrupting every car manufacter.
I’m glad I came across your channel about 2 months ago, love the flow between you and your wife, great team
I had car shield and I cancelled. Too many complaints on BBB.
You don't want a junk yard trans🤣

The one car I don’t see from gm come to shops a lot is the 2.5L ecotec Chevy Impala with the 6 speed automatic. Car I currently drive and so far it’s been great. 124,000 miles so far. Any info on them and any problems you may know of would be great! New body style not the limited (old body style) Love your content. God bless
The CVT transmissions do not shift, they have no gears. They feel like they shift because of the change in ratio at different speeds (computer controlled). They are better now days than they use to be. To get more life or longevity out of them, change the fluid every once and awhile. Do not believe the lifetime fluid crap. They were designed for a better ride and fuel economy. People need to stop hating' on them, they are putting them in some Hondas and Toyotas now days, and they wouldn't if they are so terrible. That's my take on it Papa bear. Good video, I have heard terrible things about carshield, but it is evidently working for this guy.
Right and still need to change the fluid 😂😂they aren’t bad however it’s folks who beat on them all the time, and not change the fluid
would love to see a transmission replacement video in future good stuff man, just subbed. great attitude!
Thank you for the sub 🙏🏽
Love the videos, you are a trust worthy mechanic , they’re not alot of people like you
First video of yours I’ve seen and when you did the test drive I could instantly tell you were in Georgia! Here’s hoping you’re local for me and my ‘20 Malibu. :)
the question should be is Chevy/GM worth it. a 150K Toyota transmission that is mainly highway driven will go at least twice as long. (especially with the immaculate care that you mentioned).
It really comes down to what a person can afford. A Chevy Malibu is probably more affordable than a Toyota… so if I look at it from this perspective, it’s probably worth it to that person.
ok. that makes sense, but for me I would probably take a chance on a slightly older Toyota than a newer Chevy (if I were in the market for a used car). but to each his own. I know many people are brand loyal so they will stick with that brand regardless. ❤️ ur channel, Alex!
Not everyone likes goofy looking Toyotas. They have their drivetrain problems too, especially now.
@@danielbonner8309 name any known issues with their cars, or hybrid drivetrains. id love to know. i know the new tundra had a waste gate defect that ended up being a supplier problem, fixed in the first year
Thank you for the contribution you give on these videos, learn so much about cars.
Glad to find your channel man! You seem to take a lot of pride in your work. Wish you were closer so I can take my cars
Nice instruction on bearing noise, pinpointing it!
I want to know more about the cutlass in the next stall
Gonna put a LS in it if u can find the time 😒
changing your transmission fluid every 30,000 miles is important. That fluid looked like it was never changed.
Every 30k is excessive if it's not a DSG.
@@LoneWolfSparty the issue is some of these are sealed systems so u have to get it checked or changed based on how its designed and what not.
@@ninjatvlv6101 I know; I'm just saying, 30k seems REALLY early for a CVT/traditional transmission.
@@LoneWolfSparty actually for a traditional automatic it would be excessive, but for a CVT that is what just about every manufacturer recommends, although we all know what they recommend is usually not amazing for it, my rule of thumb is is to halve the oil change interval that the manufacturer says, and 3/4 of what it says for transmission fluid changes, and the same 3/4 for any other consumables that are on an interval to be changed
min 50k max 100k
Most people think its nice to have a car with a warranty, but its better to have a car that doesn't need a warranty.
Unfortunately with that theory ALL cars break down! ALL car dealerships have a service center
I don’t care if you drive a tank, if you don’t maintain it, you’ll eventually break down.
@@Hellcat71782from a Chrysler fan, I approve this message. I’m always telling people this. It’s not the car often time, it’s the OWNER.

Alex we need to see a full tutorial of a complete tear down and put a new transmission in please thanks
I agree. Showing or at least telling weather he replaced the transmission oil cooler or flushed.
I wanna see a tutorial. Transmission blew on my 2018 GMC terrain at 143k...a week after I changed the timing belt

Uber and Lyft!
for real. i had to rewind to make sure i heard correctly
I got my 1999 Honda Accord rack and pinion replaced due to a big power steering fluid leak; mechanic put in an aftermarket replacement because there are no new OEM racks anymore. Leaked stopped for two weeks and now it's leaking like a fire hose again. Lots of aftermarket parts are crap. We need lemon laws for auto parts companies from a strong government consumer protection agency. It's not the mechanics fault for fixing it, and it's not my fault for wanting it fixed, it's the parts dealers' fault for dealing in junk. They should pay for all the labor to undo the work to put in and take out the junk they sell.
I just did this to my 99 rav4 installed an aftermarket rack and pinion because no oem part available. It's still holding though. It's a real pain in the ass to do this job at least on a rav4. I hated it the whole time lol
CVTs may not “shift” but they still have to slip and lock in, right? Is there a torque converter? Maybe “lock” should be the CVT version of “shift.”
After this transmission in, did you have to do any computer work with your scanner?
I had to do a re-learn with my scan tool
I appreciate your content just wanted to know did replacing the brake vacuum pump on the chevy malibu stop the noise coming from the rubber boot
Alex, I have changed fluid on 3 of those recently, because of you video on the top problems on that GM suv, I never knew it was recommended at 30,000 and a good friend that owns a transmission shop says 20,000 so I called everyone I know that has one, the fluid coming out looks really bad, last one I only got 3 quarts of really dark fluid, no dipstick so it never gets checked, going to dads house next month to do his he has 33,000 200 mile trip but I am going to do it for him
Great to hear!
All you had to do was hold down the traction button until it says Stabilitrak off
Like how u running shop 💪❣️
How in the world a 2019 Chevy Malibu have a 269,000 miles on it
He probably uses the car for work like Uber or something similar
Yeah he does ride share

Alex do you know if he ever replaces the transmission fluid? If the engine lasted that long I’m surprised that the original CVT didn’t if the fluid was changed regularly. I have the same car and it’s still new so I’m having a little anxiety about it but I intend on replacing the fluid every 30 K.
Always be hate people but just ignore them ur the win look around fix car makers better we need more people like axle car king
How’s the 18-21 Mazda 6 2.5 turbo reliability wise I don’t hear any issues with them. Love the maxima sr but that cvt is not it and the k5 GT has transmission issues with the DCT transmission.
We know that here in the UK as the Vauxhall Insignia, or on the Continent the Opel Insignia 😊
Dr does he get the box serviced, or is that 150,000 on the original oil?
Buy a Honda or Toyota and change the transmission fluid at least once every two years along with filter if it has one, and the transmission will last the life of the car---usually about 300,000. Keep your money in your pocket and not in Car Shield's.
Generally a good rule especially with older ones. The Honda 1.5 liter turbo is terrible though for Hondas now a days. Also not for for Honda transmissions but Toyotas transmissions are not as good as they to be. The early 2000s Honda transmissions were not good.
Have a blessed day!
Nice exit at the end f
150k miles per transmission is terrible
Well it's not a new transmission the second time we know that much
Right! The initial replacement was used also…
Lube and replace
I think the correct term instead of shifting would be that a cvt “adjusts”
I like that!
From what I’ve heard is stay away from the new cruze’s and Malibus because they tend to have a lot of coolant and transmission problems
@alex i need your advise so i own audi a3 2015 2.0 tfsi and a chevy cuze 1.4l eco 2016 they both have 145k miles and the transmission has never been services so if i drain and refill will that prolog the life of the transmission or will it starts slipping and better leave it as i'm on a borrowed time till it breaks ? thank you
that's a tuff one. On My Jeep i did the transmission drain by just dropping the pan at about 155k. appx 4qts. and replaced just that. and the filter. transmission improved dramatically!! i did another drain at appx 175k. no issues.
it's risky but i did it cus my transmission was acting up. 2007 Jeep GC going on 194k

Alex, I have a 2016 Chevy impala (NEW BODY STYLE) with 99,000 mile on it and it’s been experiencing transmission flares when it’s hot outside so I was going to replace it with the use one with low miles like 50 or 60,000. Do you think that’s an good idea especially if you on a budget!
I think you should never buy a GM product without a lifetime warranty. Garbage! Trade it now!
Have you been servicing the transmission?

Yes, I want tutorial on the transmission that Malibu
Great work 👍👍
How much does it cost for a transmission repair/installation???
Are you sure it's just the torque converter and not the transmission itself?
You know we want to a tutorial 😂😂😂

Got a 2009 kia rio beater with a heater for work same engine an trans just turned 210,000 miles an im hard on it.
Also ive been experiencing shift flares on my auto chevy malibu 2017 they come and go. someone told me i have fast learn/ calibrated it is that true
Does car shield pay you well for the repairs
They just pay what I would charge the customer if the customer was paying for it. Nothing extra. Sometimes they try to negotiate, but I stand firm
Alex today I found out the local Toyota Dealer that services my wife's car over filled it by 3 and a half qrts. It was serviced on 4/9/24 wife drove it home probably did not hit 70 on way home then for a couple of days back and forth to work short commutes 5 miles. 4/12/24 we head to town to eat and I get the car a 2020 Toyota Camry SE to 75 set cruise and not long after it starts stalling and then emits a ton of smoke out the back. I immediately pulled over and checked the oil level knowing it just got serviced. It was too full so we contacted the dealer to document and I stopped at a local oil change where they witnessed it over filled and let me use them as witnesses if needed in future. They drained all that oil out and it runs fine now. I am concerned that some damage could have been done like maybe to Cat converters or elsewhere so I contacted Toyota with pictures telling them I want anything that could have been effected inspected for damage. I do not think much damage was done, but what are your thoughts on it. Could it have damage in such a short time or not. I will wait for Toyotas response, but to think you cannot even trust the company that represents Toyota. I can expect it from a Walmart, but a Toyota dealer? Already made sure my wife knows to check it after any service and word to everyone else always check it your self:P Car is still under powertrain warranty so I am good . I always used dealer for service while under warranty and then service myself when warranty is up. By the way that CVT might make it to 200k if serviced every 25-30k I seen a Nissan Maxima with a CVT original with 200k miles on it, but the guy serviced it every 25k-30k miles fluid and filter.
Hello bro can you me tell me where is thermostat locate in chevy melibu 1.5 LT 2017 PLEASE

Not at all. I’m just trying to show the public a track record of approved claims vs failed claims from an auto mechanic perspective. So they can make an informed decision on whether they should get Car Shield or not.
Is that a 1.5 or 2.0?
How much you charge to install a used lexus gs350 awd engine😢😮😂
If they would drain and fill the fluid every 30,000 miles that transmission will last longer.
I wonder if this rideshare driver services his transmission instead of letting his car transmission die ?
@@IsaiahLove-go2kx yes all the time, and it still dies unfortunately

Pretty good for 150k trans?
Since when?
Toyota can last like 300k. Maybe more if you do regular trans servicing.
I am on 120k on my subaru 5 speed NA. Still feels like new.
Since we live in a country that sells us crappy cars 😂😩 top 3 are Toyota, Subaru, and Honda…
@AlexTheCarDoctor american and Euro cars are complete trash, especially new ones.
It is completely unacceptable to think that the lifetime of an american or euro car is 150k, after which the car will be junked because the trans or engine blew up.
Unbelievable. SMH.
I got a 2011 bmw 328xi with 208 and runs like new
Im not a fan of CVT's or Car Shield. My question is, I wonder how many miles are on that used CVT ? . Perhaps its only going to go about 20k and die also. Interesting also would be what the monthly payment to Car Shield is. If they had gotten a new CVT then I would say its a good time to drop their coverage and just put the money into CD's and let the interest build up also.
I will just keep driving my 2008 Lucerne - 165K on it - runs like a top. Im sorry but I do not trust any of the new cars. In fact, I hate that info center they put in them. Not sure you can swap it out for an after market radio.
a used transmission was put in the first time it was replaced it. It’s no guarantee how long it’s going to last. But that’s how carsheild works. The customer pays nothing but a small deductible but they’re going to get used parts. So let it break and carsheild will pay for it again.
Also he said at the end of the video the customer got 150k miles out of it himself but when the customer got the transmission it had 60 k on it. That transmission had over 200k miles on it. If you get 150k out of a transmission with and unknown background. You should count your blessings and be glad you got 100k out of a used transmission
@@willbutler2639maybe if he serviced the transmission and changed the fluid it probably will last longer
