I gave my kids $1000 towards their first car. My daughter bought a $400 Corolla and used the $600 left for tires and parts. She and I did all the work (fluid changes, plugs, wires, brakes, and thermostat replacement. She learned a lot from that experience and we had a blast bonding. She drove it for 3.5 years then sold it for $800

Maybe, but he is being facetious. He is saying that he doesn't want people to buy a car from him while at the same time trying to sell cars! If everyone did what he said then he would go out of business. What he is doing is using reverse phycology. The more he says don't buy a car from him, the more people wants to buy a car from him. Just look at the comments. It is better for him to just be honest and just tell people the truth about the auto industry and state transparent, instead of playing mental games with people.

Expenses force dealerships to be shady, like he said. If a person has a car parked on their curb, and they put it on Craigslist, they can just wait, it costs almost nothing to keep a car sitting at a residence, but a dealer MUST sell several cars every month, just to keep the lights on, so the heat is on to sell, unless people are coming in left and right.

@sprinkle61 - Shady dealerships don't stick a warning on their cars
      "We Are A Shady Dealer."
Typical customers treat dealers with trust, and some find out who Shady Dealers are, but often, it's too late. There is such a FAFO INDUSTRY (with minimum or none regulations).

Having just purchased a used car, I can say it was one of the most difficult experiences I have been through for a long time. All the cars from dealers had something wrong with them that was readily apparent, even to a 77 year old great-grandmother like me. The doc fee was $300 in our area but when I went looking in a nearby state, I found that the doc fee was between $600-$1000! I couldn't believe it. So I went on Facebook Marketplace and found a great car that passed my complete checklist and drove extremely well. It was $500 below book and with the non-existent doc fee, $800-$1300 cheaper than buying from a dealer. The owner told me the dealer he used for the maintenance and I got a 13 page printout of all the maintenance and the car had been very well maintained, including the 60,000 mile transmission service. I will never again go to a dealer!

Same here. Never bought a brand new car in my life. Bought used cars from owners. I know how cars work and I know how to fix them. So I know how to shop for a car and what to look for. Never had a big problem from my purchase. My dad always said, you are purchasing a problem. Some are picky or it really wasn't a big issue. I fix and happy with my purchase. Current car 13+ years and only paid $4,700. I have $8,000 saved, for my next purchase. I always drive until the wheels fall of it. I'm currently 60.

Two reasons to buy privately, IME, 1: History. Almost all dealers will toss paperwork and receipts, which is gold as a buyer, as it shows repairs and maintenance. If you see that a car with 10 years and 120K on it has never had the water pump replaced, you can put that on a short list, instead of guessing. 2: Like it or not, the person and where they live is a big factor. If it's some student living in the dorms who is the 4th owner, it's likely not as well maintained as a professor at the same university's car. If the person makes zero attempt to wash it or clean it up before the sale, that's also a sign that gives you information on how well the car was kept.

I just bought a used truck. I had 2 requirements before I fully engaged. 1. All negotiating would be done remote 2. It had to be via email or txt. 95% of the dealers just kept calling to get me to come into the office (Had a lot of voicemails to keep deleting). Life is busy, I am on the phone all day for MY work - and do not have time to drive 1-2 hours, was another couple hours and find out we're not going to make a deal anyway. 2 dealers participated, 1 gave me a reasonable out the door price and I went and bought the truck.
The dealer always wins, but I refuse to have my time wasted by going in-store when it's 2024 and they/we have methods to do email and/or text messaging.

I bought a car from a “very reputable” car dealership during Covid when cars got so expensive. I was in a predicament and the salesperson took advantage of me big time. It makes me sick how much I overpaid for the car. Then fast forward to 6 months in to that car and I needed to put nearly $1,700 into repairs. The car is only worth about $2,600. Other than those repairs, I have to say it has been a solid car. It’s odd driving an 11 yr old car as I always “had” to purchase new cars. I was literally car poor and made poor car buying decisions. At least this car is getting me around town and I do enjoy driving it, it’s paid off and the insurance is not too costly. In the end I am happy with the car so long as I don’t think about what a mistake it was to pay what I did for the car.

Advice - Pay cash for a cheap vehicle. Spend what it takes to fix all needed service and repairs, even if it takes several thousand dollars for repairs and maintenance work. You will have a sound vehicle that will run for years. Or, you can spend a ton of money on a new one, with a huge car payment over several years. Works for me.

If I see a used car from the dealer’s manufacturer that is under three years old and it’s NOT a certified used car, I ask to see the inspection report to find out what failed the checklist. Sometimes it’s something ticky-tack like the front pair is Michelin tires but the rear is Goodyear, but if it’s more significant than that, fuhgeddaboutit.

  • @fialee8
    @fialee8 2 місяці тому +20

I think the two most important tips you provided is 1) if you aren't getting the deal you want, leave, and 2) "out the door" price. That's the cost you'll pay for that car, regardless of how they craft the sale (car price, accessories, doc fees, extended warranty, etc)... sometimes, dealers or sales or finance guys have certain incentives, which they want to hit. For example, you may hear of a dealer willing to reduce the price of the car for the cost of the extended warranty, so it's essentially the extended warranty is "free". All that means is that you are overpaying for the base price of the car, but the finance guy is making a commission selling you the warranty (shafting the sales guy). If you are comfortable with the price, why not get the extended warranty without paying more? The other item not discussed, is that if buying a new car... and they pile on the OEM accessories you don't want... you can alway tell them to take if off the car (when possible), or just say you are willing to pay 50% of price (which is prob what it cost them, if it's an OEM part). FYI.. nitrogen is free... the air we breathe is 78% nitrogen.

LOL... there is a old saying. The fastest way to lose a friend is to sell them your used car. DO NOT sell a car to someone you like... it's like loaning money to a relative, it's not a good idea. Why? It's because if something, anything, goes wrong with that car...be it 10mins or 5 years, more often than not, they'll come back and ask you to fix it (even if it's their fault, or it was an accident you weren't involved in), or they tell other people they got ripped off from you. That's even if you told them it's as-is, go get it checked out, all sales are final and get it in writing.

Here in Finland dealerships have a responsibility to pay or fix the car if something unexpected occurs, if they can't the deal can be reversed, depending on the value of the car it can be even years after the deal was closed. When buying straight from normal consumers you don't get this protection.
Of course normal wear and usage isn't covered under this, but something hidden or really unexpected is.
And there are no hidden fees added to list price (there might be 99 dollar office expence or delivery fee, but it is announced beforehand and you can haggle it off pretty much every time)

Pays to know the laws. Where I live the fees aren’t capped but the internet price listing has to include all non-government fees. If they itemize out the fees they’re automatically considered to be double dipping by legal standards and knowing the AG’s name and exactly where to send the email with a picture of the pricing sheet is definitely helpful. The dealer might not even tell the new salespeople this information but the manager knows for sure.

The fee isn’t regulated, the dealer can charge what they want but some states say the fee has to be the same for everyone, so they cannot change the doc fee for one person… but they can lower the selling price.

    1. Yes, you hit all the highlights about cars.
    2. I bought a new car in 2004. It runs like it did on the first day because I have determined that such is how the car would be maintained. It requires listening, researching and keeping detailed notes and acting in a proactive manner.
    3. I don't view car buying as an agony or dealing with a group of crooked people. Buying a car is like buying a replacement water heater as I did last week. You have to research quality, reliability and make a decision. I treat my plumber as a member of my family. When was the last time you gave your plumber a slice of pizza and an ice cream bar? My independent auto mechanic? I bring him fruit when it is in season from my trees.
I am not the kid around the corner who bought a car with 150,000 miles on it, never had it inspected, and it blew up 5,000 miles later. He has it on the street and it is still unlicensed.
My kid can do brake jobs, struts, a paint job on a used car. He buys used and actually makes money using the 62.5 cent a mile federal allowance for business miles.

I got rid of a 2022 Tucson this month. The only thing worse than owning that Hyundai was having to deal with my local Hyundai dealer and I don’t think my particular dealer was any different than other Hyundai dealers. I will never own another one again. Of course, I got rid of it because it was a piece of junk and the last thing I wanted to do was have that car after the warranty (and the warranty was also junk). The whole reason why people buy new cars is because you don’t want to have to deal with the problems that old cars come with and my Hyundai didn’t provide that.

I agree. My method for buying used cars is person, product, price and story. The biggest problem with buying from a dealership is you only get half that info, so your risk goes up exponentially. You don't know if that car was used for street racing or if somebody got pregnant. With used cars you're putting your money on people first, then everything else has to fit.

    • @Oxios
      @Oxios 2 місяці тому

The person and story thing can be done at a small dealership where only one or two people are selling since they’ll know what’s going on. Bigger dealerships could do this if they dedicated a few minutes in the required morning meeting to what trades came in and letting people talk about them. Auction vehicles are different, of course, but the car can tell a good bit about the psychology of the prior owner with a thorough UCI. Whether they intended to keep the vehicle long term, if it was property that they respected or just sorta there.

I only buy used cars private party… I am buying the previous owner as much as the car. However, I am in a financial position to do so.
It’s pricey being poor in the US. People without cash have to finance their car, and dealers can help with that. Get approved for a loan with a bank or CU yourself? Sure, if you have good credit:
Then there is the trade-in… if you’re tight on money, it’s hard to buy the new car then pray that you can sell your old car yourself. Sure, you’ll get more than trading it in, but it could take time… and you can’t float two payments at once. So the certainty of the single transaction has value even though the hole just gets dug deeper:

Facebook marketplace has a ton of salvage title cars and people that are buying from auction with them it's such a joke. And then the people that you own the high milage car for many years when a buttload of money for it

I saw an estimate of like 60% of marketplace posts were outright scams. Meaning the salvage cars flippers, the overpriced cream puffs, the curbstoners, and sure the legit postings are all fighting for time and eyeballs in that remaining 40%. And the reasonable legit sellers are losing that battle, too.

@@Oxios exactly! What's even worse those people keep re-listening their cars so it's top of the page.

I never go to a used car lot anymore.
The last time I did was when I bought a 2012 very clean nissan sentra for $3500.
About a week later I was doing an oil change and while under the car I noticed a bent frame cross member that held the radiator in place, the radiator at the bottom was attached with zip ties to the bent cross member, it had been wrecked in the front and patched back together.
I took it back and they started that "sold as is" crap.
I started threatning to get a lawyer invovled stateing the lemon law. They finally took the car back. And refunded my money.
Most used car lots are shady.
You will pay twice what the car is worth, and they will try to hide major issues with the car from you.

    "Car dealers are shady..."
We always heard that USED car dealers are shady; but I am not so sure that shouldn't be changed to NEW car dealers are shady these days.
I've had nothing but excellent dealings with used car dealers for the past few years, yet only experienced scamming, lying and cheating NEW car dealers.

You really should share your company website in the description of your channel or your videos. That way people can find you and buy cars from you. As bad as things are i kniw im tempted to fly out there just ti buy one of your cars to drive back to Washington state with.

Meeting in the parking lot of a police station is excellent advice; so many Facebook marketplace deals are scammers. Like buying a supposed in-box phone, and they refuse to provide the phone Model and Serial number or SEID number. You can check all these things for stolen goods.

9:45 I learned this the hard way. I got out of it because the person tried to commit bank fraud and I caught it. I will NEVER walk into another dealership.

Bought a 12 year old 4Runner with 107k miles from a used car dealer recently. The carfax showed two owners with the original owner trading it in at 105+k miles. All maintenance had been done with 90% of it done at a Toyota dealership with 5k mile oil change intervals. I just couldn’t figure out the second owner since the mileage was very close to what it was at trade in. Well when I received the title and paperwork a few weeks after purchase, there was a form showing the repossession by the dealership that took it as a trade. Only roughly 1500 miles before it was repossessed so fortunately I know the maintenance wasn’t neglected. Other than having a poorly touched up paint job about the size of a quarter on the hood, the vehicle is in immaculate shape and runs like I expected a Toyota would. I’ve been happy with the purchase but I agree it can be a real crapshoot buying used.

I bought my second car from a shady dealership and it ended up needing a near $10,000 plus in repairs, before I could even get that work done it died on the freeway. I would have been better off buying a car from an auction, I still owe money on that car too. Recently bought a car from an auction, and I intend to do a chunk of the simple work myself and have my private mechanic help me with the other stuff. I love your transparency!

We bought a 3 year lease return that had factory service the whole time. We got a great deal on a car that was well taken care of from a dealer. There is lots of lease returns. Just do your research and be patient on what is a good buy.
