Rick could double his royalty money on this single by first blocking it and then by suing himself for using it anyway.
I just laughed out loud :)
LOL

fred fox 🤣 I think you just won the comment section
@ fred fox, your comment is Hilarious.. After laughing for 20 min. I realized that could have only come from experience.. That makes it even More hilarious than ever.. Whew... Lary
Rick, you are the best story teller and how you bring education into a crazy story and make it interesting, entertaining and a learning experience. AMAZING!
No way, Damo is in Rick's comments!! That's sick
@Damian Keyes Thanks!
Quite agree - as valuable as your technical knowledge is, it is how you tell the story what makes it compelling
The crossover I never would see coming.
Do a what makes this song great on a Backstreet Boys track.
I love these story time videos. Hell yeah Rick!
When Rick Beato says it's not a clickbait, you bet your life it's not.
Storytime with Rick is always good. I should have had some cocoa.
Haha! Sounds like a plan :)
And body armor!
SAME!💜
That’s all a bit much guys
Liking this comment for writing "should have" instead of the all-too-common, incorrect "should of".
I'm surprised the music didn't get blocked by Rick Beato.
lmaooo
I'm laughing so hard.
Under rated comment
Lol
Other UA-camrs: *obnoxious loud intro, takes 5 minutes to get to the point*
Rick: *Starts right away with no BS*
This is why he’s my favorites
The insight into the intricacies of the actual music business is fascinating. No one else has given this kind of peek behind the curtain.
Nathan, you must listen to bassist Leland Sklar. He has been doing daily posts since Covid. Think you'll really enjoy him.
Not clickbait is kinda more clickbait than actual clickbait. But wth, love the content nonetheless
What Makes This Song Great?
Time Waits for No One - Ambrosia
Gumorning I
What makes this song great? A plague of lighthouse keepers
Thing i learned about this, besides that Rick is a great Producer, was the fact the song 'Carolina' was absolutely no different that the thousand others written and played just like it...i guess the difference of a number one hit and a number 99 hit is the half a million dollars thrown at it to make it number one...thats how it works folks~
The difference is getting it in front of the right people.. who will THEN throw a half a million dollars at it.
It’s crazy isn’t it. But I guess if no one gets to hear it they won’t know it. But I didn’t even know a song like that could get to number one? It’s like a boyband song more then country?
Someone in the record company decides that the whole package is right for the times, and they are confident that the band can record enough saleable records, perform enough tours and keep their sh1t together long enough for the company to recoup their investment and make a bit of money for candy as well. IMO, the producer has a LOT to do with it. Listen to some demos and then listen to what gets made in the studio. Producers make a BIG difference.
🕶️
Damn it, Rick!! Your stories are great!! Very entertaining and sometimes outrageous and completely engulfing. I never get tired of listening to you. After hearing the way that you describe things and the ideas that you share show that you understand music in a way that most will never know - even those already established in the music industry! I wish that we could get together some time and have a couple beers and make a documentary about your life and career. I bet it would make an awesome number one movie of all time! So many stories and people and things that you have had a part in and so many lives that you have changed. This story is one for the books! Talk about irony - this one is definitely the epitome of it. I am glad that you have decided to share these with us and have a channel where we can talk to you directly and have a better understanding of the music scene from your point of view and be entertained at the same time. WOW!!! It's all I can say about this story in a nutshell. A lot of weird things have happened and this is no different but it sounds like a cult classic in the making. Thank you once again for sharing this with the rest of us!
Thank you so much Rick. Everytime I watch your show I smile, giggle and for some reason almost cry. These are dark days sometimes and you lighten things up and bring a glimpse of the star maker machinery. Thank you for sharing your insight and talent with us!
Wow I didn't know that song sat around for 6 years. Great guys too - we were playing the same festival once and Delta lost my pedal board, Matt let me borrow his TC Electronics Nova for the gig. I probably messed up all his presets - sorry Matt lol!
i watch your channel alot your a great player.
Who should listen to songwriter Mark Hudson tell his story about how Aerosmith wanted him to write a song for them. He did heard nothing for a few weeks untill Steven Tyler calls him up to say the songs too sad. The song sat around for years. His rep calls him up one day to say another band is interested. Heard nothing for months. The manager of the band reaches out to say the band hates the song but that he is going to make them record it. It becomes the band's first number one hit ever. 25 years in the band has announced they ending.
@@chrissyb7916 What was the song?
Whoa, unexpected!! Cool to learn, Rick! Hopefully you get some royalties from your own song getting claimed.
Oh my gosh. Hi Grady Smith. I love your channel. Love from Donegal Ireland.
@Grady Smith I think Rick should do some what makes this song great? With like Stapleton, Sturgill, and Isbell.
Well he's listed as one of the writers so he'd better get royalties.
Rick Beato and Grady Smith should do a video together!
Knowing youtube it would get copyright claimed and taken down.
Love your channel and that is an incredible story...
Keep rockin' Rick! 😎
Rick, I know nothing about playing and producing music. I just started watching your videos and really enjoy your stories and explanation of what makes certain songs so good. Thank you.
Quote from “The Blues Brothers” movie: “What kind of music do you usually have here ma’am? “ Oh, we have both kinds, country and western”! 😎
How come I know this story, but I have never seen the movie?
I am not interested in the specific dollars, but I would have like Rick to talk about royalty split given how many hands were involved over that period of time. I am fascinated by the production/writing credits for major hits.
Love this! I worked with Parmalee through all of this and it's an amazing story! You are such an instrumental part of their career Rick.
Rick, talent is talent in any genre. You are talented in so many ways. You make me feel like we were best buds in high school. Thank you for being so awesome.
I wouldn't call myself a 'country-person' per se, but I can tell you this: the (demo) version in standard tuning sounded better than the half-step track synched to the video. Nicely done, Rick!
Awesome story! I like the demo you did better
I love your channel dude!!!
You should do a story on this story.
Hey man your one of the best narrator’s in UA-cam.

Stumbled on this page and subscribed immediately as a lover of all things music, this guy hits home. Never been so proud to share the same name.
Fantastic content Rick. I already love your theory and What Makes... videos, but these industry stories are hands down my favorite. Please keep it up! If you run out of stories, then get some from your friends and associates!! Thanks for the effort, awesome content.
When I hear this song I'm instantly transported to my local grocery store trying to find macadamia nuts.
Lol

The mind works in mysterious ways and makes unusual connections. Every time I do my laundry I think of a girl I dated in high school 40 years ago. No idea what the connection is in my brain. But I know we never did it in the laundry room
@@tomjeff1743 Haha.
"Macadamia nuts" eh; well lah-dee-dah.
You simply have one of the most bizarre and interesting stories to tell every time. I actually enjoy the song, and so cool to hear you contributed.
Those of us that love music love stories about it as well, and this is the place to be, seated before man full of stories AND music. Thanks, Rick Beato, for being here because, heh, things get a little grim sometimes. We need you.
A modulation in the bridge?! That sets my Beato-ing heart a flutter!
Rick please continue the what if different guitar players played a famous solo series. It would be awesome if you could mix it up for the other instruments of the song as well - e.g. Ginger Baker on drums, John Entwistle on bass, Tom Morello Guitar, David Lee Roth vocals... Might sound interesting haha
That’s a very cool and out idea :)
@Shaun Kellison Nah Daughtry was run over by Nickelback.
@@RickBeato Could you intermix the instruments? Like a stairway to heaven solo in the style of Michael Brecker for example :)
I thought I knew this story. Love the details. Incredible.
Oh, and I’ve always liked the definition of luck that goes, “when preparation meets opportunity.”
Thanks Hypes!
"When preparation meets opportunity". Love that saying. It's sort of like a saying from some movie, "Chance favors the prepared mind".
I always thought the 'casting couch' had something to do with it.... and that was way before the Weinstein scandal. In real life we've always asked... "Who's @%@$ did they suck to get where they are.??... because we've all seen bands who've really had the 'magic' yet never got further than bars and club gigs.
What a crazy story...loved it. Happy to hear it worked out for the band nd you in the end.
Thx for sharing that wonderful story. You brought a smile to my heart.
That demo sounds way better than that final version. I haaaate the way they did vocals on bro country around then.
@DiscoFalcon it's just the way everything is doubled and it all sounds so mushy and shite
Where did you get to hear the demo?
@@dondamon4669 there's a clip of it in the video and the vocals sound sooooo much better
Rick: Ok, guys, from 1 to 10, how generic do YOU want your song?
Band: Yes
11
Middle of the middle of the road
Think of how generic the average human is, and realize half of them are even more generic than that.
@Scott Ram Not every musician is John Lennon :)
@Ok Zoomer There are plenty of songs/performances that fall short of "Arte" but make a whole bunch of money for someone, while "Arte" is mostly made elsewhere, for less reward. In the ideal world songwriters and performers can do both. But churning out stuff that makes money from the masses is a decent job, eh? No shame there. Beats working at Mickey D's or a call center.
It's in a style that I've had the opportunity to write in maybe twice in 30 years, and nothing at this level, but I can hear why this song became a number #1 hit in ti's genre back then.
Truckers, and deployed military families and couples leading the way.
Your story is as cool as it gets, Rick. Thank you for sharing.
I love your stories Rick. The way you explain the song and the way they are put together, It makes more sense after. Thanks from Ireland and much love.
hi rick i visited my uncle in Atlanta a couple months ago and im pretty sure i saw you out in public and i was too shy to say hi so hi
You should’ve come by and said hello!
@@RickBeato Mabey next time!
You mention NEEDTOBREATHE and how you had worked with them, too, as you’re telling this story. I can’t believe I didn’t know that. That’s what digital has done to me. I was a liner notes reader as a kid and even more so as I got more interested in music production and ended up at Belmont U in Nashville studying audio production and getting my degree in the music business.
I’ve been watching your UA-cam channel for a while now, enjoying your content, but had no idea you worked with one of my favorite bands, if not my favorite band, of the last 10 or so years. I think NEEDTOBREATHE might be the most underrated band of the last decade.
I’m going to find some liner notes now and see which albums/songs you worked on. Keep up the great content and the great work.
Indeed it is hard to envision this series of events repeating in at least 10 lifetimes. And the result is two weeks at number one... with writing credit.
I’d love to hear more about the experience of sitting at the table with all of those top writers in Nashville. That would make a compelling video itself.
Been sub'd to your channel for some time now and am a bit late to this story, but wanted to say congratulations. This is really cool and you of all people, deserve it. Such an incredible story as well. You've had quite the life and are sooo talented. I also need to say that your children are so lucky to have your knowledge at their fingertips. They will grow up to do amazing things in their lives and they will have you to thank and of course your wife and their own hard work that they've already been putting in from what I've seen. Kudos!
I love this story Rick. You've used the word luck more than once to describe some of your career successes. My father always said luck is the result of discipline, perseverance, hard work and ideally, talent. You have all of these. One story that always sticks out is how you started your career as a producer...by picking up a book and starting to read about it. Amazing. Theres no doubt you earned that #1! Thanks for another inspiring story. -Mark
My football coach used to say, that luck was "when skill meets opportunity".
Hey Sparky. Thanks for that. I knew there was a famous saying about luck and I couldn't recall it. I'm a youtuber as well and the most impressive thing about Rick's channel is his ability to continue to put quality videos out. Between lessons and life I have to work my ass off to get two videos up a week. Usually, it's only one. And, there's no gigs right now. Rick sells himself short on his amazing work ethic. I'm a pretty hard worker but next to him, I'm downright lazy! LOL. Have a great day my friend!!
“I am a great believer in luck. The harder I work the more luck I seem to have.” It's ascribed to Thomas Jefferson , but I read it in a book about Arnold Palmer
Luck is luck. Luck happens to maybe, 10% of people, no matter what.
That's a great one.
Clickbait would be a great band name. I'm claiming it right now.

@@PasquiDente close - lose the "c" and you're there, imho

Rick, I gotta disagree with you that it was "All Luck." Because in that interview, he had just been rejected by a record label, and rather than getting mad or just bummed and wanting to go home, he said, "Ok, fair. But if you had signed us, what would have been the next thing you'd have us do?" I don't see that as luck at all, I see that as a man taking life by the horns and making the best out of a demoralizing situation. Extrapolating that over his whole career for the things and stories that we'll never know about, I'm just betting that it's no accident that they got there one day.
I agree 100%. Too man people hear"no" when they should be hearing "try again."
I agree that their mindset put them in a good spot to succeed. Still, getting #1 takes luck. I'm sure that numbers 2 all the way through 100 took some grit and determination and a good portion of luck with it. There are a lot of musicians out there.
@@kennethyee5161 I’m not saying it didn’t play a factor. Mostly I think the difference between #1 and anywhere else in the top 10 is timing. When I looked at the charts and what else was on the chart at the time, it’s not like that song was going up against any real MASSIVE banger hit songs at the time and just out performed them, it’s because there was sort of a lul at the time and they slipped into the gap. But I was just speaking more broadly, I don’t really believe in luck when it comes to career and being successful, I believe in that if you put in the work tirelessly, you make your own luck. Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.
@@djjazzyjeff1232 That's a good life philosophy to live by
I agree but I also recommend not turning a blind eye to the possibility that you might be in the right place at the right time and find "Scotty" beaming you to Number One on your first try. Don't count on it, but don't count it out. ☯ 😊😀😉
Great stuff Rick, keep it coming!!!
Rick is the closest real life version of the Dos Equis Most Interesting Man in the World.
Good One! LOL
Jajaja
The song itself made me roll my eyes so hard i caught a glimpse of my own brain but storytime with Rick is always fun and entertaining.
No need to shoot each other, though.
Stop shooting at each other y’all.
wow, what a great story! Whether a song has three or thirty chords, I believe it's the people it reaches, the joy it gives, the memories it makes that make it a great tune! Congratulations!
Wow. Great song. Rick, you have so many wonderful experiences and so much talent/knowledge.
3:25 That's country now?! Wow, that reminds me of the kind of sound back in the mid-late 90 of music they were calling "Crossroads" music that was rock/folk/a tad country - like Hootie or Counting Crows. Anyway, love that sound.
I thought the video version sounded like 90s alternative and Rick's original demo sounded even more like it. Whatever country is now, it's a long way from Johnny Cash.
you mention Hootie .. Darius Rucker is now a country artist. i think he said i haven't changed they have.
@@patignaczak Sheryl Crow said something similar.
@@patignaczak actually I was talking about Hootie and the Blowfish, the band. But you do make a good point about Darius Rucker being country now. I completely forgot about that.
The insane story is, that after 6 years your hard drive is still operational and you actually find the song.
:-D
You are a true blessing - thank you Rick for all you do.
Yeah I remember this being on the radio it was definitely different from most of the other country stuff out at the time. But for me as a rock n roll kid I wasn’t super crazy about country but I did like this song.
My crazy music story. I was a CPA tax specialist who just picked up an elderly well-to-do new client. Because they were in poor health, I visited them at their home. Everything was normal in their financial situation, except for a royalty statement from a recording label showing a hefty amount. When I asked about it, here’s the amazing story they shared: their only daughter had left home at an early age and had followed rock bands closely. Eventually she became married to a member of the band Steppenwolf, who shared writing credit for “Magic Carpet Ride.” He died in a motorcycle accident making their daughter a widow and owner of those royalties. Then she was gunned down in a drug gang shootout, making her parents the heirs to the royalties just at the time CDs were replacing vinyl and all those great rock songs produced a gusher of new royalties. I had to bring them a copy of my Steppenwolf CD so they could see and hear what had produced that royalty check they had received!
That is nuts.
Messed up story but good for them, i guess.
I bet they'd give back every cent to still have a daughter.
Incredible💜
Love that song!
Awesome story-
How did they like the song?
Absolutely loving these anecdotes Rick, as a compliment to all the classic Everything Music content! What a story
Man, these dudes in the band have cool haircuts and look at the camera in the video while they’re singing along with the lyrics....it’s really amazing that they even admitted writing the tune with you to get the writing credit in general... most would just say yeah I just wrote it. So props to you both and for them actually being honest and sharing in the wealth. How much of the killer gear behind you would you say you bought with that writing credit alone? Just curious, and since have you have even more hits together with other country bands? Word up Rick , I’m from Rochester definitely heard about you and your ties to the area ish... killer Toto video where you broke down the parts to Roseanna. I’m a drummer and a huge fan of Jeff and always appreciate when jeff is given his credit for being one of the best. Thanks my man.
Great story of positive energy and hope. Thank you so much!
Parmalee is from my hometown. I grew up playing music with those guys. Great group of guys. Growing up I never would have thought they would have gone country. Loved rock music. Loved blues. But they seemed to fall right in the pocket as people like Jason Aldean was coming in to the scene. Growing up in the south and with the accents, we've always had a "southern rock" sound and I think that's why the transition was so effortless when they decided to take that route. They weren't pandering. The country scene was evolving. Just my take. Awesome job on the song too Rick!
I believe you when you say they weren't pandering. But I have to say, they were being a bit "opportunistic." I'm an independent rock artist, and if I wanted an easy out right now, it seems like country would be the way to go. As far as genres go, Country is just a much larger genre. Country is like the US and Rock is like the UK, as far as population. So it's very tempting, genuinely, except when you're from Minnesota, like me, you're pretty, how should I say, "Geographically excluded" lol.
Rick, I am so impressed with your humility and attitude toward helping others. What a great story...the Hammond family LOVES you!
After watching this video I looked up your writing credits and I’m blown away that I have been subbed to you for so long and didn’t know how many great songs you’ve been a part of!!! I’ve been a big fan of your music theory videos but I’m even more of a fan now!
I wish I could hear the full demo version. The half step and the band being more up front gives the song an entirely different feel.
MAN, I used to listen to Needtobreathe all the time in high school and I recently got back into some of their stuff. I had no idea you produced most of their best albums
Listening to Rick tell stories is the most calming thing ever. Needed it on a stressful work day like today!

Rick, you know what I was thinking when I heard that song again (after being familiar, have definitely heard it before) was like "Wow, this sounds almost like a Nickelback ballad or something like that. A Like a Hard-Rock pop song, but sang by a guy with a southern accent." And then when you played your original demo I thought even more that way. The delays and stuff were just very, reminiscent of "Far Away" by Nickelback. This is big praise, genuinely. this isn't meant to be derogatory in any way, lol.
I would be so insulted if someone told me this, Nickleback sucks.
@@stella-vu8vh Yeah well, not if you’re making commercial rock music they don’t.
Great story Rick. I was in LA for about 6 years and saw the music business up close and personal. That’s definitely a wonderful bit of luck-but not just luck, you gotta have the goods when the opportunity presents and you guys killed it w/your song
The chorus lyrics seem to echo "I'm looking California, but I'm feeling Minnesota" off Outshined by Soundgarden to me
I immediately thought about that. That lyric is one of my favourites
That was an incredible story! I love the song so much from the first time I heard it. I sing it so loud in my jeep driving around town❤

@@2pi628 I wrote this as a "sterotype country song" as a joke 3 years ago. Please keep the cause part as is. Guitar chords are GMaj first two lines, then DMaj next two. Reprise chord changes for guitar or violin solo before 2nd verse
Nice song, Rick. I have noticed a lot of similarity between Country and R&B ballads, eg, the chord progressions like I-iii, and the universal subject matter of good love, bad love, and lost love. The main differences seem to be in singing style and orchestration. The quality of singers from Nashville and R&B is quite good, which is probably a reflection of early singing in the youth choirs in churches. Carolina could could be something a guy like Bruno Mars could sing with strings and horns.
Great lesson in perseverance. Really enjoy watching and learning from you. Thanks so much....
You’re an incredible guy, Rick. Love your stuff!!!
That was one hell of a story! The band sounds great and the musicianship along with the vocals is top-shelf sounding! I'm going to say something but please do not take it as being negative but they sound like a lot of bands doing these styles of music. With that said I hope they continue to have success and sell many more albums!!!

You should look up Better Sax, he’s done a few “best of” sax solos, and it’s more in his wheelhouse since he’s an actual sax player. I love Rick Beato but he’s no a horn player, just like I wouldn’t want to see better sax make a best of guitar solos.

Wow, that's awesome! I'm from NC and don't listen to country but I'm pretty sure I've heard that played on some other stations back in the day that played popular music, "rock" etc.
Rick, you’re the man. Great story, and thank you for sharing!
Great story, truth is stranger than fiction.... hats off to you my good sir.😎👌
Great Story ! .. I am not a big fan of Country Music but I can appreciate the work you did on this Song ..
Much respect Rick have a blessed Christmas 🙏🙏🙏🙏🎸
Just wanted to give you a shout-out, Rick! I grew-up with LISTENING to music as an important part of my life. My dad was in the record industry for a time back in the 70's. We ALWAYS had new music playing, wherever we were. You give music a new dimension for me, and many of the things I was picking out of songs, but never had an appropriate name for, now have a name and, musically, either just make sense or are/were groundbreaking new approaches. I don't always agree with the things that excite you about a song, but I ALWAYS learn SOMETHING I didn't know before. Thanks again, brother. People like you make life more interesting!
