      I dig the new flow. Granted I'm kind of a behind the scenes nerd, so I always like watching that kind of stuff. Also, I usually find myself skipping the demo tracks because I'm impatient and just want to watch the review section. But, after watching you come up with the riffs I was much more inclined to listen to the demo than I usually am.

      You can install a mock tailpiece without the vibrola. I thought about doing it on my G400 Pro for aesthetics and for balance to stop the neck dive. I think the extra weight would probably help with that. I think it was listed on eBay as “Derick Trucks mock tailpiece”.

    In addition to the better roller bridge, some people have had success with increasing the Vibrola's tuning stability by attaching a piece of felt to the underside, serving as a support to keep it from bending wherever it pleases. Some instruments even come stock with this fix.

    • @MrJohnnyDistortion

      Tuning problems are not the fault of the Maestro.
      Locking tuning pegs or learning the "Gibson Mandolin String Post Wrapping Method" for standard tuning pegs, nut lube or a graphite nut, properly cut string slots for the string gauges, maybe a string butler for a straight line off the nut, roller or graphite saddles and soldering the ball end and windings at the ball end should help a lot.
      Frank Marino of Mahogany Rush uses 08-09-12-15-26-38 with an unwound D and performs massive dive bombs without problems.

It's very weird hearing your style of writing with the chugs and and the leads and at the same time the very 'rocky' inspiration! Sooooo nice!! Keep up the good work!
    Edit:
    Maybe you might consider to shut off the backing track completely while you are showing the sounds outside of the mix? Although it's very subtle it's a bit annoying when you are trying to hear it with good and relatively loud headphones for the sound details...

    The maestro vibrola needs 4 major things to stay in tune under (somewhat) frequent use:
    A proper professional setup
    Roller saddles
    A well cut, self lubricating nut
    Locking tuners
    Without those things it's just a cool, but impractical gimmick in my opinion

    • @Gio-un2ex
      @Gio-un2ex 4 роки тому +1

      I have an old epi custom shop SG with the epiphone vibrola. I went with a graphtech nut and roller saddles with the stock grover tuners and as a death metal guitarist, I can confirm that it'll divebomb and do crazy Dimebag squeals and stay perfectly in tune

    • @jubjub905
      @jubjub905 2 роки тому

      No...other than the well cut nut, you only need the domed thumbwheels that came with the guitars in the 60s that allows the bridge to rock with the trem. Gibson and Epiphone dont use them now and they wont stay in tune. Frank Marino did fine with the Vibrola.

    I've played both.My best friend's father was a guitar player.He had a '61 Les Paul/SG with the Vibe-rolla(Also the tailpiece with the harp that said "Gibson"1).My friend did not play whatsoever.His father passed away about four years ago,in his will he left me the '61 Les Paul/SG with the tailpiece,Vibe-Rolla,it was in incredible,stoopit good condition.Whenever it wasn't played,it was kept in its original case on a carpeted floor underneath the man's bed since he bought it new as a teen in '61.I thought it was an heirloom for his family,but in his will he described that he wanted it to go to"someone who played guitar,and would truly appreciate it for what it was,would not sell it for any amount of money,and also would treat it with love and care just as he had for all those years it was in his possession"(that was his exact words in The video taped part of his will).I feel blessed that he chose me.I definitely feel like I'm not a good enough player to deserve it,but I guess he saw fit to do so.I will treat it with the utmost respect and love that he had for it,and take care of it just as if I were him.I saw how obsessive compulsive he was about taking care of that guitar. We played together for years and years.I was VERY familiar with his habits of taking care of that particular guitar from his collection.I will do the exact same thing he did and I will baby it.Every time that I do play it,I make sure I don't have any bracelets on,wear a short-sleeve shirt,take off any rings except for my wedding ring. Wipe down(thebody,headstock,back of neck,everything,and I always use a separate rag for the strings,which is always wiped down with a string cleaner/ conditioner(the same exact name brand that he used since the late 1970's when I first met him).Even though it didn't start its life as my guitar, I consider it my number one although it doesn't get the most play.
    I purchased one of these Epiphone's as soon as they were available and I was lucky enough to get one before they went out of stock.As far as the fit-and-finish it's nowhere near as good as the original.As far as the playability?It is very close to the original,but when plugged-in sounds nothing like it because the pickups are far too hot,at least compared to the ones on the particular '61 that I have.I know it's possible that my pickups could have deteriorated over time and not be what they're supposed to be, but in my opinion the pickups on the original sound absolutely amazing.If I take a tube amp and turn it just to the edge of breakup when my guitar's volume is on 10?The volume on the guitar is what I'm going to use as I'm jamming along with a live album by the Allmans or the Dead.If I try to take the Epiphone,crank my tube amp to the edge of breakup,and then use the epiphone's volume knob(knobs)as a way to control the amount of overdrive by attack on the strings with my right hand and the volume level on the guitar?I don't get the same type of response as I do on the original '61.Other than that,I don't have many complaints about the guitar.It's a really nice guitar,I just think it could use a better set of pickups.I think a smart move would be to buy something that's not exactly on the side of cheap from a boutique builder of pickups,who tries their best to build the most true to spec. replicas of vintage pickups or PAF's type of pickups something along that line.Drop something like those in this Epiphones?You got a DAMN good guitar(especially for the amount of money that it cost when you purchase it online.it might seem a bit expensive(if you're working with a limited budget and don't have a lot of money)but when you receive the guitar, you'll see it's worth every penny,and even then some).AND NO I'M NOT PAID TO DO THIS OR ENDORSED BY EPIPHONE WE'RE GIBSON I'M SPEAKING FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. THAT'S IT. POINT BLANK. THAT'S THE WAY IT IS.

    A Bigsby has a traditional coil spring that compresses. If the unit is screwed down on the guitar too tightly or the bearings do not rotate 100% freely it will bind and NOT return to pitch. If the tension bar is not smooth the strings can get hung up on that believe it or not. An offset vibrato operates on a traditional even smaller coil spring. Much smoother than a Bigsby and requires much less force than a Bigsby to manipulate (meaning string bends will cause it to move). Strat trems operate on springs that must come back to the exact same tension to return to pitch. The maestro is a solid piece of metal that flexes. That's it. It retains its shape and only flexes. Very simple, zero maintenance on the unit itself, yet it gets the most grief about tuning stability. If you use it like Eddie with a Floyd Rose, yeah, it won't stay in tune. If you use it for a little shimmer it is VERY stable provided your nut and bridge slots are cut properly and you lubricate them. There is ZERO about the maestro unit itself that causes tuning problems. Guys pick them up at guitar stores, turn the gain to 30 and play "Eruption" And when they go out of tune they say "maestros suck". I've played dozens, have owned an Epi SG with maestro, and currently own the Gibson version with maestro and NONE of them have had any tuning issues IF USED FOR THEIR INTENDED PURPOSE. There is nothing inherently wrong with a maestro. The side-pull Gibson vibrato, on the other hand, is another story.

    I thought the pickups sounded pretty good. I bought a 2019 epiphone moderne last year and fully expected to replace the pickups with some duncans, but when I plugged it in, I was blown away. Alnico classic pros. I expected them to be a little muddy maybe not very hot, but nope ended up keeping them and now I couldn’t imagine not having them. They’re bright, punchy, just has hot as the duncan custom 5 in my Gibson explorer, and they chug SO hard when I’m playing metal. The whole guitar was flawless. I had to adjust the truss rod and do a little setup out of the box but everything else was perfect.

    According to an article that i've read, the early batch of the 1961 Les Paul/SG had a "D" shaped neck and it was later in the year that Gibson reverted it to a '60 style, SlimTaper "C", so probably these SGs are based on the early '61 Les Paul/SG neck profile, i'd like to play one as i have relatively small hands and slim necks are always welcome.

    By 2020 when the Inspired by Gibson product line hit the market, I had already owned and parted/would part with seven Epiphone guitars (and one bass) with one more to come. I might have pondered getting an inspired by Gibson model, maybe even this SG, only I was a little bit burned out on the ground. Finally, when I purchased the one I currently own which is a Flying V, I was momentarily drawn to one from the inspired by Gibson line. I wound up for going out for something more unique, one from the 2009 Negative series that was exclusively marketed to the Canadian retailer Long and McQuade. That is not to put down these models; I largely mean that I had tried my hand with those Pro buckers before and wasn’t satisfied.

    Hey Hunter, I don't know if you know this band already, but if you like Zeppelin/Aerosmith vibes, you might want to check Greta van Fleet. Killer riffs and awesome songs.

    Oddly enough, the first part of that riff reminded me of "The Greys" by Devin Townsend.

    If you are keeping this SG long enough, do you think you could buy a roller bridge for it and see uf it stays is tune. Get one for your g400 too, and swap the nut.
    Also, get either a locking roller bridge or a roller bridge with locking studs, roller saddles won't stay in tune if the bridge itself is moving on the posts.

    Yah i tried out 3 Epiphone SG models, the Epiphone Special SG with/ P 90's, the Epiphone SG muse, and this Epiphone 61 SG Standard with/maestro bar, I liked this one the best, even though it was the most expensive one out of the 3, it just sounded the best, it played the best and felt like a much more expensve guitar, the other 2 felt cheap compared to this one here in the video.
    In Canada, they go for 750 Canadian dollars.

    I had a '64 SG. Should have fixed it and kept it (broken reset neck, flat). Hell, it was only $150 !!dHad a MIK G-400 that I loved but sold. Plain grain instead of the stripey s#!+ they do now. man, family knew I had it out because it also smelled good !
    Bought a '10 or so mic G-400, $249. Used but like new from a shop. Still had the plastic on the plastic.
    5 minute set up and for years, my fave axe.

    I have an SG Muse. Neck and frets were flawless out of the box. BUT...PCB wiring and terrible pickups. After $300 in new wiring and Seymour Duncans, it’s perfect. I probably could have gotten an SG Tribute for the same spend, but it’s a great guitar...so I can’t complain.

    Great vid, but you this didn't got me. For almost the same prize you can buy a used 30+ yrs old SG Lawsuit-era from Japan, and unless you wanna chug crazy distortions, they are wonderful instruments, far better than what I saw here, by any means.
