SG x Les Paul Custom... Is it Worth It?? || Epiphone "Inspired by Gibson" SG Custom Demo/Review
Haha, I don't remember scheduling this for the morning, but I guess this works, too. Let's gooooo. Which Epiphone models do you want to see next??
If possible in the future maybe the new Brendon Small Ghosthorse Explorer? That one looks pretty interesting
The '59 Les Paul. It's their top of the line model
You should definitely do either the Kramer assault or assault plus. Not exactly Epiphone, but still a subsidiary!
Any chance that you'll try the "inspired by Gibson" explorer or flying v?
The Les Paul Juniors that are in the same collection as the other LPs you’ve reviewed. Hoping they drop lefty LPJs soon 🤞🏻
People who don't like SGs are just wrong.
I’m a Proud member of the just wrong club
@@LordHereck every SG that I have ever played or bought was so unbalanced and I had to move the strap buttons and de value the guitar.
@@michaelsavides8856 that's what SG stands for, Sliding Guitar
I prefer guitars that don't dive like Greg Lougainis.
I like my shirt but the fretboard is shit, the pickups are not high enough out put for what I play wnd that’s it.
We need an "Inspired by Gibson" reissue of the white 3 pickup Custom.
This is a petition.
You got my signature man!
Yes we do. I'd buy one immediately
That’ll be 2k$
@@Trey-jl9ru
The "regular" Vibrola SG is $550. The black Custom is $570.
I guess around $600-640 would be adequate if we're talking about it being a main line product and not some kind of limited edition/custom shop item (which was what I meant).
Paying more than 1k for any Epiphone (except a vintage MIJ one) is ridiculous.
@@martyscovers2022 You thought i was serious??????
Wait a minute... this isn't *𝓰𝓸𝓸𝓭 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝓽𝔀𝓸𝓻𝓴*
I heard “gouda footwear” lol
Mandatory Pringle pats in the demo. You love to see it.
Had to be done lol
Guys I bought the SG yesterday. And trust me! They fixed that frets thing. Mine feels sooooo comfortable!!! It feels like a smooth maple neck you would get on a Telecaster. Really I love love my guitar!!!! I dont regret one dollar of it. And I'm planning (in the future) to get the Gibson 490r and 498t pickups to make it sound and feel closer to the Gibson model. I love this thing. Its also the lighest guitar Ive ever had. 🎸
Got those pickups installed yet? Also how’s the guitar been so far?
This the Sabbath tribute song Metallica never wrote.
Got a bit 'Laid to Rest' at 4:19...
We can't escape our influences, eh, Hunter?!
I find riffs from my favourite bands pop into my riffs all the time too! :)
Hahaha dang it. *tries to write in Black Sabbath, ends up writing in Lamb of God*
Hahaha I was literally hearing that exact part of the song and thinking something similar about 1 second before I read this comment.
@@agufish Reclamation off of wrath has sabbath bloody sabbath influences it has the grandiose nature in common give that album a listen I think you'll hear what I'm talking about
Still waiting for an updated Matt Heafy Les Paul Custom with Evertune and Fishmans.
Haha yeah me, too. He teased them so far out in advance the wait is killing me
@@agufish Absolutely. And based on how amazing the old model already was I'm fully expecting to make the new one my exclusive studio guitar. It's gonna be so sick. But I'm so impatient.
I'm gonna get one for sure
With Sabbath being my all time favorite band....I started this video in shock and disappointment. But, that was also my favorite demo track I've heard from you to date.
Now do your homework and put the Sabbath discography on and don't leave your room until it ends 🤘
I’m assuming this kid got started with some shitty metalcore emo bands 😂
Normally I'm not one to call out people for not knowing something. But, I mean, Sabbath....
Come on, guys, at least he tried...
Warning comment not suitable for lily livered wussbags:
Millennials gathered in their masses...just like bitches with black glasses...da da....da da da da...
Just playin’ y’all, don’t be offended. Ribbing is almost dead for fear of political correctness.
I think Gunther was honest and did a fine job.
Long live The Godfather of Metal, Tony Iommi!!!
Maybe go the reverse way with this one, dont start with the classics like everyone does. Check out tgeir late 80s early 90s albums.
I kind of like this "preparing for the track" thing you did. Cool to see your process.
This was one of your best demo tracks so far! Keep the great work up!
the black sabbath inspired demo was honestly really good :)
lol thanks man! Glad you thought so. I thought it turned out OK, really not my style of music at all so it was hard to capture that essence.
@@agufish check out sabbath live in paris 1970, i saw that and i was HOOKED from then on :)
find a singer and you can make a hit.
I played Les Paul's until the day I picked up my 2019 Gibson SG. If I would have played the SG first I wouldn't own 3 les pauls and an SG I would own 3 SG's and 1 Les Paul! The 6lb 2oz body of my SG is the real reason I love it. Until this guitar I was convinced that the heavier the better, but this SG changed my whole outlook on guitars. Great demo I have been looking at the 2020 in Pelem Blue with P90s.
Had the same experience. Always thought I was a LP guy until I got an SG. Nothing resonates quite like a good SG imo.
Dude this was one of my favorite demo tracks of yours! Tasty groovy riffs!
I love seeing the demo track process, it really adds to the video to me!
I really appreciated how honest you are when reviewing a guitar
Loved the song. Great job on capturing Sabbath's essence.
Great job on the demo!
That's my favorite demo track of yours. Probably cause I'm old. Awesome, thanks .
Super appreciate a straight up review, no b.s. jus honesty
As a metal fan, the more you listen to Black Sabbath (the Ozzy years, the Dio years, and even the Ian Gillian album) the more you will love it. It's THE root of all metal music, all metal genres, and sub-genres, and the more you listen the more you hear things from other bands. The important things to remember is DO NOT make a playlist of titles you recognize, or of, "popular," Sabbath songs. DO NOT listen to covers/remakes and think that it helps you get an understanding, it may or may not. DO listen to entire albums, DO listen to the progression from album to album, and DO shove that, "not technical," comment back up your ass where you found it when your head was up there. 👍🏿 Play the lead guitar, or better yet, analyze the music theory behind the song, "Planet Caravan," and tell me that part about, "not as technical," or the bass solo before N.I.B. No, they're not modulating between the Enigma scale, Phrygian Dominant, and the Hungarian Minor, as key changes within the guitar solo, but it doesn't have to for it to be, "technical," nor to sound badass, or just sound like good, interesting music. Sometimes Al DiMiola played pentatonic minor, too. For the time these albums were produced, these albums were some of the most technical hard rock being played, and every one was as heavy and brutal, or more, than anything else that was even slightly out of the underground, and these guys were among the biggest bands of the day. The album "Master of Reality" is literally the birth of every stonercore, doom, sludge, etc. band ever. Metal doesn't exist, Punk doesn't exist, Grunge doesn't exist, without Sabbath opening wide a door that a few bands had gazed through the peephole. Sabbath kicked that door off its hinges. They also sound dark and haunting despite the fact that many of their songs are political, societal observations or critiques, or about love, about being in love, about being heartbroken, being lost, being depressed, about chapters of life ending and/or beginning, about cosmic or spiritual ideas or journeys, or they were subtle, metaphoric, or fucking brick in your face shockingly honest and blunt warnings AGAINST many things like war, or evil guiding you, or evil in other people's hearts, or the evils of greed or egomaniacal pursuits, or deceit/dishonesty. Their songs about drugs are in many cases graphic warnings against them, like heroin in, "hand of doom," or cocaine in, "snowblind," but, "sweet leaf," is definitely a song praising the plant, and the positive experiences, the beneficial effects on their personality, helping open up a shy introverted person, helping open their mind to new ideas and perspectives, allowing them to see themselves differently, more positively, allowing them to feel more comfortable and relaxed in social settings, and a feeling of freedom, among the positives that it brought into the life of the songwriter, and/or the narrator of the song.
I promise you, the more you open up to, and the more you listen to the music of Black Sabbath the more you WILL love it and learn from it (and like I said, you NEED to listen to ALL the songs on an album, because it's like listening to Led Zeppelin, or Metallica, or Nirvana, any world changing, powerful, and transcendent band, and only listening to the popular radio songs, you miss out on the best music, you miss out on the most diverse music, you miss out on the creativity, you miss out on the power, you miss out on the perspectives of the individual musicians and their input on that band, and on every band that was influenced by them, and often some of those popular radio tunes are some of the closest to crappy songs those bands ever made). So, definitely listen to every album up until born again, and don't skip technical ecstasy because critics didn't like it, they're is still really good songs, and good riffs, and great Bass playing, on that album, do not skip the Ronnie James Dio albums, do not skip born again...
but after that I really can't say anything one way or the other because that's about the point in the band when I stopped listening to their music. Too overproduced, it didn't speak to me. Some people may be able to tell you of some good songs in those late 1980s and 1990s albums, and you're free to decide on your own, but by that time Sabbath was no longer the influential metal powerhouse it had been, not close to it.
I would recommend the first time you listen to those albums, go through them chronologically as they were released, go through that a couple times, and then start putting them into the order of your preference period based on what I know the music that you like, the music you tend to play in your own riffs, you will probably be most into the later Ozzy albums from volume four to sabbotage to Sabbath bloody Sabbath, and the three albums immediately following Ozzy being dismissed from the band, heaven and hell, my rules, and born again. Then again, you may be into the birth of doom and sludge and stoner and any metal that uses a fuzz pedal on master of reality. If you find yourself enjoying those kinds of riffs and those kinds of sounds more and more, check out corrosion of conformity from the early to mid-1990s onwards, it's all good, check out the albums of Down, Kyuss...
Yeah...
At the age of 13, when I started listening to heavy metal and rock music, I bought my first Sabbath album, their first self-titled. The moment I heard Tony's work on Warning was a turning point in my life. The only thought on my mind was "I want to learn to play the guitar just like this guy". At that moment and coming from no musical background I decided to learn to play and picked up the guitar. I'm 37 now and still listening to those albums with the same awe. Yes maybe their not as technical and flashy as some of the players of our time but none of them can create the feelings that they can through their music. That's the point of rock music, to be able to express your thoughts, feelings and emotions not to show off how technical, fast and flashy player you are.
@BidenSniffzKids Clitton why would you care? Don't read it.
@BidenSniffzKids Clitton what a dummy? What the fuck is a dummy? If that's an attempt at a statement of intelligence, you've clearly defined on which end of the bell curve you fall.
"Y'know, it's be great to see him pet Pringle during a demo tr, oh My GOD!"
-Me circa 5 seconds ago
Let’s gooo. Really interested in this ones aesthetic
This is one of your best demo songs ever! Genuinely enjoyed listening to it, and totally captured the Black Sabbath vibe.
I was a singlecut guy for many years (and I'm still). But I always loved SG. Angus Young (new album soon !), Tony Iommi and many, many great guitar players.
But I never bought one because... Of neck dive. I was affraid about it. I was thinking it's unplayable.
But recently, I was like "f*ck it, I want one".
So, I bought one, a few months ago. A G-400 Negative Series (with Maple Fretboard) and... I immediately fall in love with SG. I was like "why did I wait that long to try one ?!".
Yes. It have neck dive. A lot.
BUT, surprisingly, it's really easy to deal with. To me, I naturally find the perfect position to play on my SG, without having any issues.
I waited so many years just because of neck dive and, today, I find it easy and confortable to play...
So... A few days later... I bought an other one. An Ebony G-400 Pro. Awesome guitar. And... I'm already looking to buy an other one ! 2020 Epiphone 66 Standard or 61. I don't know yet but it's gonna be a Cherry Red this time !
Sorry if I talk about my life but... I just want to say. If you're afraid about neck dive, like I was, try one. And I hope you're gonna love it as much as I can. It's really easy to deal with. Right position and/or big strap.
Thanks for your video Hunter ! Love it, as always. It's great to see an other Singlecut guy enjoy a lot some SG.
Btw, sorry for my poor english and greetings from France !
I too was afraid of neck dives for the longest time, and being an explorer guy i thought it would be too great of a transition for me to ever get comfortable with. However, i had always lusted for the Gibson Iommi SG, 24 frets and all, and when i finally found one for an "acceptable" price i bought it, knowing it'd be my first and last SG.
I was pleasantly surprised how little i had to compensate for the dive, even being a standing up player, cos of the low general weight of the guitar. Not to mention the great growl from the signature pickups! That guitar is a keeper, and even if i won't keep it (how else could i finance the brimstone burst explorer?) i won't sell it with a loss, that is for sure!
I have a Korean SG from the 80's and it doesn't have neck dive 😏, I had an SG 400 62' and I let the neck dive cloud my judgment and I traded it. I upgraded all the electronics and put a Dimarzio Super Distortion bridge (only) and it sounds sweet 👍. I've come to really like Lower output pick ups because they are warmer and give me a sound I really like.
@@1thess523 my G-400 Pro have much less neck dive. Just a bit but nothinh important. And, curiously, I use my Negative Series most of the time. 😁
Honestly, the demo song was one of your best. I love it and can’t imagine how awesome it would be if you made it into a full song with lyrics. So much energy. I’m old so that is why I like it, LOL. Great job.
That Demo Song was awesome! Love the look of that Guitar.
Been waiting for this one since the SG unboxings... God bless
These new Epiphones are good guitars to mod. I PLEK'd and changed out the pickups in both my Epiphone Firebird and SG Modern. The difference is very satisfying!
That demo track was fkn fire. awesome riffs and great mix.
Sabbath meets Mastodon. 😂🤘🏻
Cool review once again!
Thanx for your honest opinons on this one.
Good work!
Thats one of the best demo track you ve ever done man !!
I’ve got an Epiphone SG with a killswitch built into the tone pot, it’s one of my favorite guitars I own. Love the SG
Getting some Danzig vibes from the demo actually!
Dynamite demo!!!! That was a very awesome rendition of what a modern day Black Sabbath would sound like.
I own this one. I LOVE IT.And it sounds great.
Really like the demo Hunter, wouldn’t mind you doing some more like these, feel I could hear the guitar a little better than some of the more heavy ones you do ? I’m not much of a djenty guy so love that you do some different styles. Keep them coming mate :)
I think that was my favorite series of pickup demos lol
Demo sounds like something “The Sword” would write 🤘🏻
Hey man, for a guy who’s not big into Sabbath, your demo track turned out awesome! It’s got just enough “Sabbath” and “Hunter.” Cool stuff! Review is helpful too. Keep up the great work.
Loved the tone , what gear you used? crunch or distortion?
This demo turned out to be one of your best. You should get someone to sing over it. This is really good m8🤘🏻
That Sabbath like demo was great, you did Mister Iommi proud.
How do you record through the katana? Are you plugging the amp straight into your pc via usb or are you using anything else between the two? Nice chugs btw
I dig the track! Old school heavy vibe for sure!
I appreciate the honesty
This demo has that black sabbath vibe, but if somebody played it to me without knowing it was your song, i would still think "Yoooo did agufish write that?". Great job my friend!
I have one, I had to do a fret job on it and I put gold mini locking grovers on it. I got it because I never played an SG before, and it matches my Gibson black custom. Well it turns out I love the way the SG plays, and I will be getting a Gibson SG 61 standard 'soon and selling the epiphone.
Great job, !!
Your dog loves it, and that's good enough for me
That was awesome.
Ur doggo is happy to listen some Sabbath-u riffs :3
Just bought this guitar and love it......
I bought one 3 years ago and it was perfect. No glue residue anywhere, fretwork was amazing and it's now my go to guitar. Maybe I'll update the pickups someday, but otherwise it's amazing :)
How dare you not know any Sabbath!! Damn kids! Get off my lawn! 🎶🎸
I bought one its perfect.
You got a strange one-off agufish.
Majority of reviews are stellar for this guitar.
Ha ha hunter your such a cool kid man thanks for taking what I thought was a cool approach little off your usual styles but awesome none the less always enjoy your vids buddy
Yup... gotta agree. Had the same issue with the frets on mine. I got mine used and the seller didn't mention that. So when it arrived, that ticked me off. I love the look of this one being close to a custom and the pickups aren't back for that Sabbath'ish vibe.
I have 3 of these. I got them to give away as Christmas gift. However 2 was was just amazing but the other one well you said it already. Lol I dressed the frets clean a little glue of the fret board. Plays like a dream now.
Honestly, I’m surprised Boss hasn’t sent you the Katana Artist MkII to try out. The cab resonance settings are really nice to use for tone shaping!
The talk through on what you were thinking on the demo song was as cool as the reviews usually are. Made me enjoy the intro much more than usual. (I skip half the time. Not now.) You should make a habit of it. (Or offer it as a bonus on Patreon.)
hey what's that thing on the end of your jimmy clip? :p
To get that Sabbath sound nailed you should really turn the gain and treble down. Marshall Plexi or Orange amp sims should work best, I think (at least on my Helix they sound pretty convincing to me).
LegalEagle cameo in the background, love it
What a legend. Epic chugs while giving lovins to the bestest boi.
That demo track was awesome
That is the best sound I have heard from any Epi. I was surprised.
Lololol thank you hunter I love your videos, also because you rate the brooms objectively. In the early seventies I wanted to buy a Gibson SG but decided on an LP. The SG was heavier than my entire hometown and a really rough part, without a clear coat, a really rough board. The part looked as if someone had nailed it together in some backyard. In contrast, today's Epiphone looks like pure gold.
Rock on
Yetimatze
What did you do to the solar single cut
I bought one about a year ago and I had the same issue. I Have to keep the action high to keep it from buzzing. Pickups are really microphonic to. Gonna keep it and do the work myself. New pickups and fret work. Nut was chipped to lol.
Hello! I have a question about the neck profile. In comparison with others sg like lastest standard, g400 or even special P90... how chunky is the neck profile (slimtaper) of this guitar? I want to buy a SG one, but I see that neck profiles is not very specify in the epiphone web page. Thank you so much for the review anyway!
My boy's got Legal Eagle on his desk top!
I'm a large advocate of staying informed (and thinking of like a lawyer haha)
Honestly the boss has been the star a lot for me. I’m really thinking of getting one
You know what I want them to release in the epiphone lineup. The ES-140T
the track is SO SICK.
Hey! I started on an Epiphone G400 too! Couldn't have asked for a better guitar to start on!
Reminds me of children in the grave Cool track!
*recommending Fishman Fluence while wearing an EMG t-shirt* HERETIC!!
The man is a total rebel
Good video and good song, Hunter. Seems the only thing not good was the SG. Thanks for being real with us.
That was so sabbath, great job
Sounds like something from Technical Ecstacy sort of. I like it.
Playing with one hand and petting Pringle with the other? The true guitar hero
volume 4 is my favorite Black Sabbath album, Tony Iommi’s guitar work on that album sounds like a tsunami of distortion.
I see that Legal Eagle video in the background ;) 8:45
For a guy who's not a Sabbath fan, you nailed some of Tony Iommi's basic ideas.
Have you gotten one of the '50s Inspired By models? How do the necks compare?
You've done a great review of this Epiphone SG Custom and the Epiphone Firebird Slash Signature.
I would like to buy one of them.
Which one do you suggest?
I like them both but I can only buy one.
The style I play varies from Black Keys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, RATM, SOAD to Black Sabbath.
Is this Guitar epiphone sg custom ebony right for beginners, intermediate or advanced players? Is it good for concerts?
Clicked for the guitar, stayed for the demo. \m/
That bass tone whoa. I know it's not a real bass but wow.
I have a gibson gothic. This reminds me very much of that
4:31 what is the black thing next to the nut ?
This was probably my favorite demo track. Sorry to hear that QC let you down on an otherwise decent guitar.
is it just me or how else misses Simon he gave the best insight on the guitars
My plan is to buy one of these an paint one of my future albums names on the fret board
I got mine in the mail I gues Iucked out because the binding and fretboard work is flawless
Its bright punchy a bit smoother then the pro bucker pickups. The feel is phenomenal. Compare it to a Gibson sg and you'll understand.
That riff could totally invent a new genre
I don't know how this was a disappointment if it sounds this good 😊
I'm going to try one soon and hopefully I won't be disappointed.
I bought one. Its perfect.
Check Guitaristas review on youtube. Its more detailed....and way favorable.
@@jamesrogers9949 same here. Got mine a few days ago and I love it.
Im all for the chugs but that demo was refreshingly bare. No layers, no fancy drums. Just sweet riffage.
