    When it comes to sparring, my fear is hurting my partner too much or becoming violent. It's why I wind up going too easy on my peer and accepting defeat often if I can't avoid the request/situation in the 1st place which I usually do.

    This is a great video. A big journey starts one step at a time. Sure, you can be thrown into sparring and could probably figure things out eventually, but it's a lot easier if the mind is focused. A focused mind leads to a calm mind. A calm mind leads to a relaxed body. A relaxed body can move more easily.

    I fear the prospect of fighting. That's because fighting is dangerous. I fear the prospect of fighting for myself, or in defence of somebody I love dearly. That's not to say I wouldn't fight if it was the only option, but I think fear is both natural and essential. Fear keeps you sharp. Fear is good. Panic on the other hand...
    All that said, another excellent video. I love the idea about focusing on one thing at a time during training. I'll definitely be taking that one on board.

    I want to know something, what's more important in a fight?
    Your balance,
    your strength,
    your movement,
    or your mental stability?
    Also is a T position with your feet okay?
    I see it as my less dominate foot behind me sideway-ish and dominate foot straight forward; then I usually straight punch with the hand that's aligned with my dominate foot. But what I want to know is, is it okay to step forward with the dominate foot while punching?

    • @sqewd8647
      @sqewd8647 8 років тому

      Wolfhaven Master you have the answer.

    • @dduncan55330
      @dduncan55330 8 років тому +2

      Wolfhaven Master I would say mental stability is top priority, followed by balance + movement, then strength. There are times when I spar that I'm not focused or am having a rough day and don't do so well. I've been training for 13 years so I feel pretty confident with sparring, and even I have my off days. Balance and movement are super important for obvious reasons. You can't apply power without good balance and you can't evade or find openings if you don't move. Strength is last because you don't need to be super strong to cause damage to someone, but it definitely helps.
      As for your fighting position, when it comes to positioning yourself in a fight, you want to be in a stance that's natural and comfortable to you.
      I usually spar sideways with my feet parallel to eachother because I throw lots of kicks. But if I'm planning to throw lots of hands at my opponent, I'll square up more by turning my lead foot forward and bring my back foot out to the side more to turn my hips and chest forward.
      Moral of the story: your stance should adapt to your fighting style. If you don't have a fighting style developed yet, find somewhere to receive some training and after a while you'll figure out what types of techniques you're better at.

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  8 років тому +13

      That's like asking what the most important part of you car is... the wheels, the engine, or the brakes! You need all of them.
      As for your stance, sure, you can lead with your dominant foot. Bruce Lee preferred that method, I believe. If it works, don't doubt it!

      @AndoMierzwa  8 років тому +3

      Wolfhaven Master always try sparring but don’t just do the same stuff all the time

      Ando Mierzwa thank you sir! I've been using it as part of a combination by following a jab --> cross --> then using my jab hand as an open palm to "blind" the target, and after the hook with my front (left) leg I finish with a rear (right hand) spinning hammer fist. Bit over detailed but that's the plan!

      I'm curious. How does a front foot hook kick work? We sometimes practice them, but more for conditioning the muscles and balance than for actual use. I can understand how you could achieve either speed or power with a front leg hook kick because I can't see an opportunity to generate significant momentum with it. This is not meant as negative by the way. I'm genuinely intrigued. If you can effectively pull it off, I can see it being really useful because nobody would be expecting it. I'd love to see how it could be done without compromising speed, power and balance.

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  7 років тому

      I don't know how to answer that! A technique only works if you do the work to make it work. If you don't like the front hook kick, then focus on what you do like. Simple as that!

    Thank you for the video, I went back into Taekwondo after 20 years and been back for about 5 months and went to my first Taekwondo completion, lets say my sparring sucked but it just means I need more practice. I think what intimadted me was that I was the only senior red belt in the ring with 6 other black belts that had years of experience. That's not going to stop me for going back though, just means I know that my sparring needs a lot more work.

    Very useful tips. Especially the multitasking - I always try to train everything at the same time - too many things - is my bac straight, am I leaning back, are my legs in a good position, ow, where did that punch came from! Yes... Btw here is a tip for beginners: If you are beginner it's not very likely that your more experienced partner will hit you hard (even if it seems the other way). It really helps if you've seen your partner hit something (someone) else with maximum power. When you spare you are usually not putting 100% of your power (or it'll be fighting, not sparing). I've seen my partners hit someone at full power and it's not pretty. Every punch I receive is like gentle tap compared to that. You can start being afraid when then say: "take that pad". And the less experience my partner has, the more I'm afraid. There is a kid that punches me in the nose 10 times every training session (because I suck at blocking). It's not that powerful, but it's uncontrolled and I'm thinking "will it be the eye next time".

      Thanks for the comment, sir! Having good sparring partners is definitely a key to success. Stay away form the jerks and treat the good ones like kings! Stay safe!

    That is true I used to be terrified this far. Now that I've started sparring in class I'm not scared at all anymore I don't know why I was ever scared of course I haven't been hitting that hard or hit hard yet. When I was a kid I was picked on all the time I have no idea what I was scared of. I wish my parents had given me martial arts when I was a kid my life would have been much better. Martial arts is saving my life

    I actually found a similar method for myself. I found that I have issue as an offensive fighter (through sparring with some of my friends), and I ended up draining all of my energy because I would try to be overly aggressive. Instead, I adopted some of the concepts of aikido and judo, in which I will simply counter, rather than strike first. An opponent is most vulnerable when they attack. Back when I was training with my instructor in TKD, they had another class run by a different guy and taught Uechi Ryu (a lot of bone toughening stuff). When that instructor quit, a lot of the students filtered into the TKD classes. They were a blast to spar, since their defense basically made it feel like striking a statue. I found drawing out their attack and making them overreach was the only way to make any headway.
    Most "fights" I was in during high school only lasted about a second or so, I'd be grabbed and I'd yank their fingers out of socket, and it was over. If I was struck, I simply absorbed it. My body had some "quirks" due to training since I was 4. I am 5'7" and I had and still have rather high physical density. To put this into perspective, my fighting weight was 210 lbs, and I looked like I only weighed about 140-160 lbs. My BMI was 31, yet I could run 21.6 mph (had it measured) and I was able to walk on my hands (longest record was a little over two minutes). On three separate occasions, when I was punched, the attacked actually broke their hand. Even a fight I issued as a challenge against the guy on the wrestling team in my weight category lasted only a second or so (I told him he could use any techniques he wanted, be they wrestling or anything else, and I would do the same. So, he shot in for my leg, I sidestepped and kicked his shin HARD, and he was down for 10 minutes). A big part of fighting is simply cancelling it before it begins though.

    Back when I was young and first started sparing my biggest enemy was adrenaline dump, it will take the fight right out of you if you cant stay calm and breath with every shot. That ability alone could give you an upper hand over an average untrained out of shape attacker, just weather the 20 second storm lol Great vids man!

    The method that has worked well for me is to ask one of the best students in the class to spar. Have some control, make an effort, and get beaten. Get that first ass kicking out of your system from the get-go. Getting hit and "losing" is not the end of the world, and it will show you the flaws that you get to work on.

    I was beaten up quite a lot when I was a kid and that took a tool on my confidence and mental health. I've been training in karate for 4 years, and for 4 years I've been bad at sparing. The fighting itself terrifies me and I can't wait for it to be over, I legit can't win any fight, everyone in the gym outdoes me. Sometimes I wonder why do I even bother going to the dojo...
