That's what martial arts is about. The more martial arts training you do, your psychological manner improves and you find yourself not being aggressive. It's good for people who would want to manage their anger. it's good for anger management.

No words will prepare you for the fear in your first fight. Learn to fight in a gym, in a safe place. Learn what it feels like to lose badly. Learn what it feels like to be hit. Make all these scary unknowns become known before the real thing ever happens. If you're familiar with all this and it still feels overwhelmingly wrong... Run! You're not ready.

I wasn't scared in my first fight for some reason. But I let myself be influenced by my rage and ended up swinging irrationally which caused me to lose. After experiencing so many fights I kept learning from my mistakes & eventually won most fights.

BS! You cannot interchange fear and anger anymore you can water and oil. You can get rid of or ignore fear, but you CANNOT change it into anger or courage. You can get angry alright, but UNLESS you control or get rid of your fear (which would make you a robot maybe!), it'll be there EVEN if you're angry!

I remember when I faced the reality of my first fist fight. I thought I was scared to death. As years went by, I finally realized it was adrenaline and not fear.
Tactical breathing: breath in counting to 4 seconds. Hold for 4 seconds. Let out slowly 4 seconds.

probably because you have adrenaline pumping but your mind is controlled and focused. Also, looking with peripheral vision lets you see react quicker, so that might be why things seem to be slow motion, in stressful situations people can tunnel vison, leading to them using peripherals to see everything else, for example a boxer focusing on the chest can see and react to the punches better via peripherals as opposed to staring directly at the punch.

Total respect for Dr John's advice. I was practicing the breathing halfway through watching. It does seem to calm me down. However, in a random / unknown situation, fight or flight does kick in and is difficult to control. I think that the more a person exposes themselves to a situation, the more they become desensitized to it. A bit like getting battle hardened in a war situation, your first day at school etc. I asked a skydiving instructor the question once, do you still get scared when you dive? He said yes, just nowhere near as much as the first time. Familiarity can give a false sense of comfort, but adrenalin is a physiological response that tries to keep you alive..

One thing I can add to this is that I've seen many a black belt in the dojo become a white belt on the street. Once a real threat appears there is a natural survival that will take over. Dr Jon is correct that breathing and being really calm will help you but it will also throw the opponent a little. Enough for you to assess the situation .. Remember , you only need a second to make your decision to strike or run. Obviously there will be occasions where running away is not the option and this is where the breathing and the calmness is most important. You may only get one chance to strike so make it count. I have been close to many a street fight and I have talked or walked my way out of every one, sometimes through psychology of mimicking the intimidation and then offering a get out for the opponent.. As an ex pupil of Master Wong (San Shou) and Sensei Chris Allen (Krav Maga) I am no pushover but I always feel the best of my training and ability has been where no punch is thrown and your calmness and rationality and sometimes conceding points to keep peace has been the best display.

Wow this is very accurate advices here. I did prepered for dangerous situation 1 year ago, as I was expecting it to happen and what I noticed is that I was present with breath. I was very mindful of all my body - there was no room for fear actually. Now that I recall it I forget about fear itself! It worked out perfectly. Abdominal breathing, calming mind and consciously breathing bring you back to control - set you in charge of things.
As ancients says: Control your breath gives you control of your mind and from this comes control of your body.
Not even shakes. Full control and pleasure of flowing fluids and adrenaline. Totally present. Accepting everything as it is.
Breath in. Breath out. Steadily. Heres lies hidden Power.

mark Lawrence exposure therapy years ago i worked the doors to over come fear of confrontational situations. They were rough pubs n clubs every night your fighting all diffrrent sizes of men. The thing that works for me is to stay present in mind, dont allow your mind to be a few seconds a head. See the moment frame by frame.
After a few awhile you become addicted to the buzz thats when you have stepped out side of fear. You become an indomitable spirit. If you dont train like this you remain tame instead of becoming a warrior. . With hand wraps rounds of light sparring 30 % of your power in punches work up the power in time. Head and bodyshots. Dont be shy. After the sessions notice how you feel. Today we have to be warriors.

By constantly training and focussing on ur breath u will notice ur breath will get better, ur heartbeat less coz ur heart doesnt have to work overtime and when u find urself in situations of anxiety again u will be able to deal with it better. So if anyone does suffer from panic attacks, I have been told this is very effective.
The technique I have heard to calm down and get over a panic attack is to breath in slowly and deeply for 5 seconds, trying to fill your lungs.
Then hold for 4-5 seconds. Then breath out slowly for 8 seconds.
    Hope someone finds it useful.

I agree. Breathing deeply is really important during and after a fight. No matter how fast is your opponent is, all you have to do is take a deep breath while moving to be more calm and peaceful in mind. In that way, you will counter your fear. It's just like taking a deep breath when you feel like you have too much problem in your life. I always taking a deep breath when I am working to lessen the fatigue of my body and to develop my stamina. Inhaling and exhaling while doing some work.

Well said Dr. John and Master Wong. Fear is basically over thinking, it is just survival instinct, it's your brain trying to come up with scenarios where it will survive and when you flinch or hesitate, you basically freeze. Stress for example, is a result of over thinking, our brains are always "making movies", trying to find a comfortable outcome. The trick is to train yourself to be Zen, to let go of control, and what this means is you need to focus. The best way to do this, is by simply focusing on your breathing. Not thinking, yet not dreaming, ready for whatever may come. You must relinquish control and trust that your brain will do it by itself. For example , in archery, you can't think, you just train your muscle memory and you don't release the arrow, your brain does, you just feel that it is the right moment to do so. Don't think, focus. Be in the present moment, all your thoughts aren't real, don't identify with them, just be like water and go with the flow. Meditation is the best way to learn how to be Zen. This takes a lot of practice and may take a long time, because you really need to teach your brain, or re-program it not to panic, and these are natural survival instincts. If you do feel panic, focus , center your Chi energy and remind yourself, it's just adrenaline, and use it. Breathe slow, not with deep breaths. Take a few deep breaths though, but relax your breathing, breathe with the abdomen and remind yourself, there is no emotion, only serenity. But in a fight, emotion is powerful. The way we feel and perceive Chi energy is through our emotions. So it takes a long time to master this. Bruce Lee was a great example of a Chi energy user. It's an ancient Shaolin art and not everyone can master it, but everyone can learn and use it. To use Chi energy is like having a super power, You use it with your heart, not with your mind, but too much use and you will lose control over it. Too much emotion and you lose control, you must find the balance and know when to strike and if you can make your opponent flinch, you already won. I recommend skydiving, scuba diving and rehab therapy and all forms of meditation and lots of video games. I went through a lot of suffering to learn this, don't take this info for granted, I train hard, been training hard for 40 years in this life and I've been here many times before. But now I am at peace and I hope reading this will help you. Namaste.

Of all the times I've had to face fear, the worst was not a street fight, it was when I was suddenly attacked by three pit bulls while on a run in an isolated area! There was no time for fear. I had to immediately go into survival mode. My martial arts training saved me that day. The fear came later when I had the time.

      Docinaplane What happened!?

    • @Docinaplane
      @Docinaplane 7 років тому +23

Raxon: I was running on an isolated lime rock road through a wooded area.Suddenly, I saw three pit bulls about 50 feet away on the side of the road, eating a large chunk of raw meat! I later understood that their owner had probably abandoned them there with a final gift of food. They saw me and, without any hesitation, they attacked! If you have never faced the action end of a dog bent on your destruction, I’m glad for you. Seeing those growling, snarling, raging beasts, is a memory I do not treasure. Dogs have the obvious physical advantages of serious teeth, speed and strength, but humans do have some things that can work in our favor. We have a height advantage, but, most importantly, I believe, we have the ability to bluff.
The attacking dogs did not know I didn’t have any real weapons. I think they felt that I was just as capable of hurting them as they were of hurting me! I had never faced an attack by a pack before. The dogs would attack one at a time, and as I backed the attacker off by aggressive posturing and shouting, the next would attack, and so forth!
I was able to hold them off for over 10 minutes! At that point, I remembered hearing that making eye contact and being aggressive only caused a dog to feel threatened, and I decided to try something else. I averted my look away from the dogs and turned as if to walk away.Wrong! Just like that, one of them bit me on the left leg, around the knee! Being December I was wearing a running suit with long, loose-fitting pants. Although he was able to bite me, he was not able to maintain a grip and bring me down. At that moment, I reached a level of anger that I never knew I had! That, and continuing to do what I had done, and slowly backing off with each repelling of the dogs, caused them to finally give up trying to kill me! A few minutes later, a car finally came down the road, and seeing the blood, my wave for help, and the dogs, they stopped and gave me a ride back past the dogs, so I could get home.
I may have lost the battle, but I won the war, and country justice prevailed! If a child or someone with less training than me had come down that road, they probably would have been killed!

Docinaplane I was attacked by 4 stray dogs in a foggy night in the middle of a remote field, I could literally only see silhouettes moving around me. I just started randomly kicking and I managed to kick 3 of them while the 4th one bit me a little bit under the knee and I just continued kicking, shouting, posturing until they eventually ran away. It's absolutely nothing comparing to 3 pit bulls, you were lucky to stay alive. It's just the damn fog that made the situation look like some horror scene.

The best way to overcome paralyzing fear is to simply be aware of and expecting of stressful situations... being suprised by things unfamiliar to us puts us in shock, and once shock sets in fear is subsequent. Staying composed is good also, so thumbs up to the guys elaborating, but yeah man being at attention is the very first thing you must have going for yourself.

Best advice to martial art students who have to use what little or what years of experience you have, before any fight, realize (no matter the face/talking/size), if you’re going to get into a street fight, use your addelin smart; keep your distance, use your head to try read his body movements..always best to get the 1st stike in, as far as breathing goes, you always want to exhale while you’re attacking, it tightens up ur abdominal musicals & much less chace of you get caught with a counter & winded..if you have a flexed tight abs & you push the air out as you strike..cant knock the wind out of you if its not in you...although always watch out for body shots to the liver/solarplex/neck..no muscle or tech. can defend from a solid shot to any of those area’s..on the street, if you’re a trained/semi trained fighter..don’t make the mistake of getting toe to toe & throwing wild punches...keep ur guard up, know he is trying to hurt you, try to strike 1st & hard..& fight dirty need be, never know these days.
