I've got a MK3.5 Focus ST and have been been contemplating upgrading the stock speakers for a couple months now. Best speaker upgrade vid I've seen for sure, I will be referring to this guide when I sort my speakers out.
Michael Stout it’s a great upgrade, especially if you replace them with quality speakers and prep the doors properly. It’s a world of difference. Add even just an 8” aftermarket sub and the sound is 100x better than factory.
Same for me. Absolutely great video. Helps me a lot. I had done quite an upgrade on my old Peugeot 307sw and now got a focus and am always disappointed by the sound system, the old speakers would even fit so the video is perfect for me! Greetings from germany.
Fabulous tutorial video and super helpful. After seeing this i did a full upgrade of the speakers with dynamat on my 2014 MK3 FOST. I replaced the stock sony ones with Pioneer TS-D65C in the front and rear. Added a new HU sony AX5000 and pioneer DX874 amp too. All i can say is wow. The dynamat make a huge diffrence to eliminate road noise and speaker vibration. I wish i had done this upgrade on my ST years ago.
Hey Dave... Cheers Bro. Your vid allowed me to slap a new set of speakers in and Dynamat the doors because you made it look super simple and gave me confidence to give it a crack. Sony XS-XB1621C.
thanks for this. am about to do my 2016 focus st with the 6 speakers "premium" sound system (non sony) here in the Netherlands. Picked the JBL Club 64CSQ. Going to tackle this next weekend with help of your video. Many thanks for the clear explaination!
Great video! Very informational and I’m sure it will help many! For knowledge sake, I’d like to add that here in the states there are some keen differences between our Mk3.5 models. In addition to the Torx screws, on the bottom of the front two door panels there are two 7mm hex head screws as well. Also, we don’t have those fine quality foam vapor barriers, we just have a plastic sheet😂 the RS does have the foam, though, but that’s probably because it’s made in Germany so quality is expected. For my rear component set, I didn’t even think of the gap at the top of the door panel, so that’s definitely helpful for those that would like to easily mount a smaller crossover! One note I’ll add is that crossovers, especially the ones with higher quality speakers like Focal, Audison, JL, etc. are driver specific. It won’t hurt anything and you’ll probably never notice if you’re using a different crossover than what came with them, but matching crossovers are optimal. Also, if you want to go beyond the Dynamat, invest in some FAST rings! They’re just foam surrounds that help drive the sound into the cabin instead of inside the door so your mid-bass performance skyrockets! They’re usually about $15-20 (US) here so it’s a very inexpensive upgrade! Again, great video, I’ll definitely tune in for more! 👍🏻
Have you changed your rear speakers for new components? I disconnected the stock speakers and have 6x9s on the rear shelf. Just about to get rid of those and go back to stock location using some poineer components. Do you find the "back fill" ok. My 6x9s give a good rear sound so I'm hoping moving to the rear doors it will be ok 😬
Graham Prescott I did. Rockford Fosgate T1 6.5. The midbass is pretty decent from them so it’s good enough. It’s no midbass driver, but it works well since the rear channels are attenuated anyways. The tweeters for me are right at my shoulder so I had to attentuate them to the -2dB setting on the crossover, but the bass from the midrange down low is good. I’m not sure what 6x9 you’re using so I can’t tell you if it’ll be better, but it doesn’t hurt to try! My sub setup has a lot of low end extension so the rear fill isn’t that noticeable at higher volumes anyway😂
@@rogueghost2012 great. Thanks. I have some infinity kappa 6x9s they have external crossovers. They are good but fire the audio straight up so people in the back have quite a muffled sound. I wanted the boot back and the 6x9s sit heavy on my parcel shelf too. I'm just hoping it sounds as good as what I have. I have a 8" JL audio micro sub. All powered off a 5 channel digital kenwood amp. I dont have it overly loud but like the underpinning the sub gives.
I have my F/R about 70% to the front. The rears are garbage and just bang out 500hz REALLY LOUDLY. Rear fill is shit. Spend the money on the front. I have often thought about 3" drivers on the a pillars
@@rogueghost2012 I have my rear components now. As you say the tweeter needs turning down but i don't have the control from the pioneer crossover. My headunit (kenwood) can do this on the front speakers only so may have to swap the connections over to reduce the gain on the rear tweeters!
I dont mean to be offtopic but does any of you know a method to log back into an Instagram account?? I was stupid lost the login password. I love any help you can give me.
@Duncan Xander thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm trying it out atm. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Thanks for the video, good information about car audio. I've got a mk3.5 Focus and I've changed the ACM (radio unit) with one from Kuga models (code starts with cv4t-). The new sound is much better,it's amplified. It's a nice upgrade and it's not expensive. Plus it's got a low signal output for subwoofer.
I am thinking of updating my ACM too , ive seen the ones with the Sub output so was looking for a focus one thats high power and sub output. did you change just the ACM or speakers too? Thanks
I am waiting until my stock Sony component sets in my '14 ST need to go in the bin, but I am thinking of doing the sound deadener on the steel, but also on parts of the door cards themselves. I have however added an aftermarket class D Monoblock amplifier (Kicker DXA 250.1) and swapped out the stock 8" Sony subwoofer for an aftermarket one (Kicker 43TCWRT672 6.75" 2 ohm reflex box). It made a big difference in volume, fidelity, and overall bass extension and presence. I would very much recommend adding one to an existing stock Ford Stereo, or use it to replace the OEM sub. Also, I love the fact that your video included a walk-n'-talk style presentation, AND...you used hand tools to do most of the work. Powered tools should not be used on interior parts, because it is all to easy to snap/beak/strip the hardware. Well done!
32:58 very true this on my mk7 fiesta he tweeters were very falt sounding and failed to produce a nice shine. The tweeters look very similar in my new focus as well and sound fairly poor. Look like they are a weak spot in the system.
Having had a Mk1 and Mk2 Focus, that both had an excellent full sound from the factory, the Mk3.5 we have now is dreadful. Weak, thin sound. I know this job is hardly a big effort but I can't believe there isn't a simple access plug and play main speaker upgrade. I really don't want to be cutting off the ford connectors and fitting new crossovers, sheesh. In any case, good job on overcoming the rubbish OE sound 👌
Hi dave just got a focus st3 brilliant car ,I'm in to my music but the speakers in such a good car are c#@p what do you suggest as regards to speakers cheers
Doing a similar thing to my ford focus 2012 mk3. They likely use the stock basic speakers, it’s not the sony version. Just upgraded my head unit and reverse camera which is WAY more work than this for a first timer. Thought I would have to fit the entire door with the stuff. I didn’t buy brand name stuff, just some chinese stuff that looks okay enough and doesn’t smell. I got enough to cover all four doors entirely for like 30 euro. I’m not asking for the ultimate sound quality, I just want it to be good. Bought a pair of emphaser fdf1 speakers that are supposed to be just plug and play with ford focus mk3 even if it doesn’t say so straight out. They seem to be very high quality, very heavy and go down to 50hz low and 22khz high. I ordered a focal isford165 set before but it was months of delivery time so ended up canceling it and buying these instead. 90db sensitivity instead of 91.6 of the focals if I remember correctly, but the focals have 60hz 21khz instead of 50hz to 22khz. The emphaser speakers were actually a bit more expensive. Honestly, despite not seeing many reviews, they appear to be very high quality so I’m not regretting it. I just hope it ends up all being worth it. I’ll keep the rear speakers for now, I don’t have the budget to change them and honestly it seems like it might not be worth it. I’ll see how happy I am with just the front ones changes.
Done with the front doors. First one was messy and screwed up by getting some in places that interfered with the panel so had to get rid of it and put some more in other places, wasting some material and not getting optimal coverage. Second one went much smoother and looks more pleasing. Will do the rear doors tomorrow, though with only one sheet each, will just be enougj to cover the most important places close to the speakers. Sadly the speakers I bought didn’t fit. The store claimed it was plug and play and would fit, but only the power plugs fit properly, the tweeters wouldn’t pop in nicely(if that was the only issue, I would’ve epoxy glued it) but the speaker just didn’t fit at all. It had a power board that was 1-2mm too close to the speaker so it wouldn’t go in and even if it had, the screw holes were positioned incorrectly. It was made for the ford transit. Fun when you trust a company’s customer service and they claim to know something they don’t. Could I have fixed it somehow? Sure. If I drilled new holes and got a new plastic mounting ring and epoxy glued the tweeter. I don’t want to though, I suppose I just have to wait for new stock of the focal speakers to arrive. They don’t go as low or high but is better in other ways at least. I also had the 25W 4ohm speaker in my car. They sound okay-ish if you play at pretty low listening volumes but start to distort/sound weird quickly. Funny that I can now drive them way, way louder with my new head unit but they start to distort at 20% of max volume. Not only would it suck in quality if I tried getting it higher, it would likely blow the speakers.
the speakers in my car are 20 odd years old. and i just knew i would but them to goid use one day. the current equivalent is the "access" range. not overly powerful, but sound really "natural".
