  • Welcome to the thirteenth episode of Constructing Kingdoms, a series dedicated to analysis and speculation of the Kingdom Hearts narrative based on literary tropes, character archetypes, and storytelling patterns.
For this video, I'm going to focus on another group of characters whose significance to the narrative is rarely analyzed in serious detail.
While I was editing one of my early videos, one of the questions I was asked was what Donald and Goofy added to the story that the writers couldn't have gotten from any other Disney characters.
So this month's video is dedicated to taking a deep look at Mickey, Donald, and Goofy's roles in the story Kingdom Hearts, and how that fits into the context of our two main protagonists' coming of age journeys.
As always, the thumbnail for this video was made by my friend Kimberly Leveille

I love the point you made that the exact moment when Donald and Goofy stop teasing Sora about Kairi was when Sora fell to his knees crying reuniting with Riku. It's a bit meta considering that was the same moment a lot of people in the fandom also realized that Sora/Riku was a thing. It's actually quite noticeable how much Donald and Goofy used to tease him about Kairi almost relentlessly in early titles just to stop in later games.

Major props to the KH staff for being able to use symbolism and subtext to portray the one and only Mickey Mouse as someone accepting of queerness back in 2002 where mentioning any of that for even a one-off side character in Disney would be taboo. Just like Riku said in the DDD novels, what "darkness" represents is different for everyone and in the case of Riku, context clues point to part of his darkness being acceptance of queer feelings.

Man... I always thought that Donald and Goofy were like uncles and I always brushed off their impact on Sora but you're right. They are paternal figures to Sora and clearly he is not okay right now. The way he broke in Kh3 proves it. They mean well but they definitely have a long way to go. They sure created some heafty damage in my poor boy.
And Mickey!!! He loves Riku so much it hurts me. He decided to cast away his preconceptions about the darkness in CoM because he loves Riku more. They don't know eachother for too long at this point but Mickey is already 100% there for Riku. And the dialogue in Kh3... It's basically a coming out! Mickey Mouse is really out there being a good paternal figure to a gay semi-closeted teen. I'm losing my mind xD. The rat dad and his gay son.
This serie is amazing, I'm slowly catching up with all the videos.
Also, I really need to read the novellas...do you know, by any chance, if they are available on epub or pdf anywhere?

Another thing I've noticed is how the Disney companions also might line up with the boys story's. Goofy is a knight and Donald is a magician. They are both a step down from Mickeys position as the king and therefore also work for him. Those two are a good duo to an ordinary boy like Sora.
Now to Riku and his match up with Mickey seems very interesting to me. Especially with the whole symbolism regarding Riku and the possibility that he might be something entirely different from everyone else. And if we believe the theory that Riku might be an descendant of Ephemer, whose bloodline is supposed to be special/royal, which is proven by the whole Xehanort situation, then him having a king as his Disney companion might be some more foreshadowing to what Riku really is.

Oh yeah! Time for my favorite topic: accidental adoption!
But really though, I really like how Mickey's shifting view on darkness thanks to Riku informs the narrative, because listening to him it should have been obvious to people that darkness and light weren't as clean-cut entities as black and white, or good and bad are.
I feel like Donald and Goofy's general teasing, and I think I have read something similar in the past, is sort of a projection of their own insecurities of being left behind by Sora, and out of all of the scenes they had together, Sora making the correction on Goofy miscalculating how many half-pints the three of them make "One and a half.", followed later on by Donlad jokingly mocking Sora for not knowing how to count, is probably one of the most telling example.
Once again, great video! Reminded me how much I wished Max was in the series, how fun that would be for him and Sora to interact!
If in KH4 Donald and Goofy get to be just the two of them for long enough, I think it would be pretty interesting for them to travel to a world like Turning Red or Luca and learn on their own that they have to put their trust in Sora, and that it's okay to let him grow more independent from them (plus Luca has great queer subtext and a very easy Riku parallel to make, so yeah).
(Made a small edit because Riku's name was supposed to be in the second sentence)

Since Sora has Donald and Goofy. Riku has Mickey. It would be interesting to pair Kairi with Oswald. Kiari upbeat attitude would be the oil to the vinegar of Oswald's Epic Mickey 1-esque cynicism.

Loved this, especially when you slotted the parental figures in the heroine's journey!
The thing that surprised me the most was when you showed how Donald and goofy actively looked at sora and Riku reuniting and even showed them reacting to them. I remember kh2's, but I honestly don't remember somehow seeing them do it in Ddd. Donald pushing himself up and leaning on the table with his tippytoes on the chair trying to take a look at them is actually adorable, and the silent agreement between them afterwards ahahaha

This video was clearly the result of great effort. It shows!
    My thoughts after this video:
    - Would you consider making a video like this, only with the focus on Kairi (or Aqua, Xion, Namine, Olette, if you wish)? "The Disney Moms"
    - Seeing as Kairi wants to train with Aqua *on her own accord, instead of basing the decision(s) on others* (with/without training with Lea/Axel and Merlin), maybe we can FINALLY get some deeper development with her?
    - Personally, I'd really like for a 'female approach' to Kingdom Hearts; we've experienced the boy dynamic so far, now we could tackle the female dynamic
    * As some fans have made memes about; a FF-X2 inspired game featuring Kairi, Xion and Namine, with Aqua as a mentor.
I'd REALLY appreciate you making an analysis based on what's presented in the video and my comment!
    Sidenotes:
    - Having Nomura & Co putting Kairi in the spotlight would appease the players and fans who have been disappointed with Kairi over the years...
    - This could also be a chance for developers (Japanese in particular) to make *proper* female characters, as opposed to the not-so-healthy portrayal we've seen in (Japanese) media
    What do you think?

You know, I find it understandable that Maleficent would be cast as the "toxic parent" here, considering her origins. The story of Sleeping Beauty is, among other things, a cautionary tale about how to handle Fae. Maleficent and the Three Good Fairies are representations of the Unseelie and Seelie courts of the Fae in European Mythologies respectively. These two Courts are in a perpetual state of conflict or competition with each other, with humans caught in the middle. Overall it was preferable to deal with the Seelie Fae because they were by nature less malicious than their Unseelie counterparts, but showing any sort of preference like that was the equivalent of taking sides and would put a target on your back. When the Royals in Sleeping Beauty failed to invite Maleficent to the party after inviting the Three Good Fairies and doubled down rather than apologize when she confronted them on it, it was seen as a major insult and Maleficent retaliated.
In the context of the video, Maleficent being the "toxic parent" is understandable because, as an Unseelie Fae, it is in her nature to be malicious and manipulative in her interactions with others even when she does genuinely care about them, like with Riku and how she used him for her own ends despite coming to see him as a son.

I'm so glad you brought up the part in CoM where Sora gets teased about how he acts with girls when we??? Never really got to see that?? Like, I guess Kairi, but even then, it's mostly just "you gotta stay here while I go do more hero stuff". Idk, it just felt off

FR. That line was so out of place. I don't recall Sora acting strangely around any girls. The smile line was a Sora-like thing that he'd say to anyone who was sad. Someone on tumblr actually pointed this out but we only play as Roxas and Ventus for one KH game but already in their separate games, they've commented on how pretty/beautiful one of the Disney Princesses are (Belle for Roxas and Aurora for Ventus). Meanwhile in the 6+ games that we've played as Sora as the MC over 20 years and meeting dozens of Disney princesses, the first and only time he's ever commented on someone's physical attractiveness was Yozora-- a boy who looks like Riku. This is on top of Sora saying he doesn't understand love or crushes despite seeing dozens of straight couples. Any teasing about how Sora acts around girls just seems wildly inaccurate.

Maleficent absolutely fucked up in a bunch of different ways, but I'd say that's a result of her unresolved trauma and feelings of powerlessness controlling her (hence why the most likely outcome for her is playing right into destiny's hands unless Riku and Sora realize what's going on and what actually needs to happen by the end) were what caused a lot of her fumbles and issues.
Mickey himself doesn't seem like someone with any amount of damage, pain, or trauma. And if he is, he resolved it nice and neat. Which is quite likely why he above all of the Disney characters seems the most well adjusted and emotionally supportive. Even if he himself has his own edgy moments (but you could argue it was meant to protect Riku's desires and Sora himself because he knew that Riku would inevitably need to make the jump in trusting Sora on his own, not realizing Sora himself does not really take 'no' for an answer when it comes to emotionally supporting his friends).

I honestly hadn't considered before that Maleficent might have her own trauma. I'll have to take another look at the series through that lens and see if anything new pops out to me.
Mickey definitely had a lot of trauma from the fates of the BBS trio that he repressed until post-Coded, but it's not as immediately obvious bc by the time we learned about the BBS trio he'd been repressing for so long that his "mask of happiness" so to speak was all we'd known - compared to how we had already seen multiple instances where Sora's cheerful facade slipped within the same timeframe.

    Regarding KH and trios...
If Maleficent/Mickey and Donald/Goofy are metaphorical parents for Sora and Riku, who do YOU consider to be Kairi's?
We've had only Disney characters fill this role so far, so any suggestions and Disney/Square combinations are welcome. Don't forget to leave a reasoning for why :-)
    As for me...
I'm going with The Rescuers (1977), seeing as Kairi is essentially an orphan (she's adopted by the DI mayor). Also, Kairi needing to learn to move forward on her own. Still, it would be nice to see someone fill these roles for her. It could also be a way to use older IP's in KH.
If not Bernard/Bianca, then maybe Kida (Atlantis: TLE) and John Silver (Treasure Planet). Why? Charting your own course, as well as having to grow into your role/responsibilities. Not to mention that both Kida and Kairi are "fake" princesses as far as Disney media is concerned (by that I mean they don't have the same status as others Disney princesses).
Sidenote: Kida was immobilized temporarily, just like Kairi. Both have experienced highly traumatic situations, where they lost important things (Kairi's grandmother and Kida's mother, respectively.

Maleficent absolutely has light in her - Sora saw it in KH2 even if Maleficent gave excuses. Queer-coded or not, isolating herself because of trauma and the fact she's fearful that all she'll ever amount to is a story, she still does care about others. Goofy and Donald were in it for the Light-based obligation to an authority figure - just like the five animal people (I forgot their names) were abiding by MoM mostly out of obligation, but also because they trusted him as an authority figure even if they occasionally had gripes with his methods. Meanwhile Maleficent genuinely cared about making sure Riku got what he was seeking, even if her methods were also rather wrong and misguided.
And also likely misunderstood the situation between Riku and Sora due to her own trauma, but presented in a manipulating light because that's JUST HOW MALEFICENT TALKS.

  • @weridplusho
    @weridplusho Рік тому +12

I think you're trying too hard to fit Maleficent into your "queer coding" lens and misreading her as a result. Because while I agree that Donald and Goofy do assume it's Kairi to Sora (though I could argue that's more out of ignorance *and* defaulting), Maleficent simply doesn't apply. Not in canon, at least.
Just because she's not supportive doesn't mean she _cares._ You're falling into the assumption that "not supportive = against" which isn't true. Maleficent is a great example of someone who simply doesn't care.
Maleficent's words towards Riku aren't the sign of a parent wanting their son to not be gay. It's a manipulation tactic. Maleficent is a (kinda) two-faced manipulator who seeks control (aka power) in KH1. For her, it's more finding out Riku's weaknesses and using them for her own gain. Her words about Sora is to break their bond. To make him feel helpless and thus needing support. And guess who he's gonna lean on? That's right. Mama Maleficent. Pure controlling tactic. Isolate the individual and make you seem like the better person by being there. As such they are more likely to believe your words and/or trust you. And behold, it _works._
Plus, in Monstro, when she asks Riku what he's doing, she doesn't seem all that mad. Rather she seems understanding of the whole thing. I don't think she understood the depth of their bond and Riku's insecurities when she started her web, not until then. But she never seemed to care that much as long as Riku was under her thumb.
That, to me, is proof that if it was any other weakness, even Kairi or if Sora was female, she would have done the exact same thing. And imo why Maleficent never treats Sora differently than she would any enemy. If she cared, she'd act more hostile to Sora. Rather she finds him more of an amusing thorn than anything. She knows she lost Riku to him way back in Monstro.
Rather I think Riku and Maleficent's relationship represents what happens when your parent is controlling and manipulative. Nothing is safe, not even your sexuality or who you love. All of it is up for grabs to be used against you, not because they hate it, but because it gets them what THEY want. The selfish side of "I don't give a shit" (vs Mickey's selfless side).
That said, excellent analysis of Donald and Goofy. Hoo boy, you can tell they found Sora the unwanted adopted son and traumatized him before they learned to love him. I think THAT scene and how Donald was the first to leave after Riku's betrayal, compounding the fact HE was the one that set the bricks to Sora's repression. And how Goofy unwilling to stand up for Sora at the moment compounding how he never stopped Donald when the duck was at his worse. And how it was all for the one guy Sora wished was around because he saw _him_ as a pillar of support right at his ultimate moment of betrayal.

Good points about Maleficent. In hindsight, I got a little too carried away thinking about the potential symbolism and social commentary of her being one of the last obstacles to Sora and Riku getting together like I talked about in Episode 12, and didn't think about how that matched up with her only caring about Riku's feelings and desires in terms of how she can use them to control him.

Unrelated to the video but I’ve been thinking about this for a while and I was wondering if it had any merit. One common complaint about Xehanort I hear and I myself have is that him just wanting another keyblade war and his “redemption” in KH3 portraying him as someone who wanted to balance light and darkness made no sense. I was even confused as to why Namoura said Xehanort was his favorite character in the series. However, when thinking about his story in BBS and dark road (though I haven’t seen every cutscene of that game and know probably 75% of the story) I realized why his desire for the keyblade war and the balance for light and darkness actually made sense for him as a character/villain. He’s an ironic and somewhat tragic villain in the sense that he wants to create a world the balances light and darkness but falls to the extreme of darkness as Eraqus falls to the extreme of light. I could see it very similar to someone in real life who hates how something is and wants to change it but becomes the same evil that initially caused the feeling in the first place. With this in mind, I don’t entirely see his redemption in KH3 as a redemption, it feels more like Eraqus is helping his friend to stop being so caught in an extreme that he once was and accept life as it is and that they are people who are fighting for the balance of light and darkness (Sora, Riku, and friends). I can see Ansem SOD as a representation of being cold-hearted and distant from others but he begins to see Riku as a rival rather than a plain enemy possibly because he sees himself in Riku (obviously the character that actually balances light and dark in a positive way) This is even sort of reflected in his finals words cutscene in KH3. Xemnas could represent Xehanort’s ambition for a new world as he placed himself as “king” over Org.13 and treated them as underlings as if he already got his wish and his desire for a heart could also be seen in this context as him wanting his perfect world that he can be happy in. I can’t say as much for YX because he existed at a time before Xehanort truly formed his ideas about restarting the world. I don’t know if all of this was already obvious but it made me see Xehanort as an actually good villain and his selves just didn’t need to be beings simply corrupted by darkness

I really like a lot of your thoughts here, and I think your take on Ansem SOD and Xemnas is pretty interesting. Also, what you said re: Xehanort being someone who hates how something is and wants to change it but becomes the same evil that initially caused the feeling in the first place is actually something I plan to touch on in my next video, because it actually plays a very important thematic role in how Sora and Riku will be the ones to succeed in bringing about the change he really wanted ;).
And I definitely agree that his fate at the end of KH3 wasn’t truly a redemption like a lot of people see it as. To me, it was clear that Eraqus just convinced him to let go and accept his fate with dignity.

The Master of Master is, in fact the one who put the idea of False Light in Xehanort's brain. False Light is the thing that trigger Xehanort because that is what happened with Baldr. Darkness hides behind False Light. So Xehanort would wipe away both than have False Light unconsciously spread Darkness. The Balance of Light and Darkness is Nothing. From Scratch. Back to Zero. Then, you create a New World.

I can't remember many Dads in KH. Gepetto and Mufassa come to mind. I guess Eraqus is a afoptive father. And Sora has a father who took him and Riku to the Island where they met Terra and Aqua. Kairi never talked about her parents even after her memories came back but we know that she was adopted by the Mayor of the islands.

I hope we get to see more of their families.
However, Japanese culture has parents being occupied with work; which is why many Japanese animes and such has the main characters (teens, usually) being alone at home.

I personally like Donald and goofy cuz i cannot get over Disney being awful and mickey in kh 0.2. its not his fault entirely but seeing him treat riku gret compared to, Donald and goofy onto sora, give him a barely passing.
As an oldest sibling, Donald and Goofy abandoning sora is not okay and i hope sora faces and works through that trauma and the two dads learn and grow. Pls Nomura clear up the misunderstandings between the characters and promote healthy connections and communication.
Donald and goofy going to the underworld to find sora is a bit funny but understandable, cuz sora disappears and hades might know about death or an alternate afterlife.

Your analysis was amazing and I love that the ultimate conclusion is that all of the disney parents are accepting of their kids. (except Maleficent, but with the amount of queercoding her character has I would just call her a hypocrite)
I just thought how funny it is that the 3 main mascots of Disney, the company notorious for their gbtq erasure, turn out to fully support their gay sons, Nomura has a big Storm coming.
I just noticed from the other comments that there was also written text in the video, so I'm going to re-watch it now!

I am definitely aware of the irony re: Maleficent, and the symbolism of Disney's mascots being supportive of their gay sons is actually something I plan to go into more detail on in a later video because I had A LOT to talk about in regards to that kind of meta commentary on Disney that I didn't have time for in this episode.

I like to consider Yen Sid a parental figure too. If not a father, than more of a grandfather, alongside Merlin. Showing up occassionally to give advice and stop our heroes from being reckless and, as shown in Kingdom Hearts 3, even participating if things get dire.

    I need a Feelings-Jam Cry-Fest Hug-Pile between Maleficent, Riku, and Sora in KH4.

  • @HolyDemonSnap
    @HolyDemonSnap 10 місяців тому +2

I'd dare-say that after Riku fucking STABBED her, Maleficent was pretty wary about going anywhere near Riku again let alone looking for him, whether or not she herself even knew he was still alive and not a Heartless. Given I don't think Pete NOR the actual Maleficent ever actually interacted with Riku after KH1.

If the KH2 novel is any indication (and this is a "nothing to confirm it in-game but nothing to disprove it either" example), he was the one who convinced her to get involved in the fight at Hollow Bastion (by appealing to her desire to retain control of Villains' Vale), and they were actually mostly civil with each other, all things considered.

@@The_Violet_Howler Huh, that's intriguing. Makes me wonder what else Riku was doing behind the scenes and what's been going on in his head this entire time, since it appears KH is more show than tell and won't explicitly tell you their thoughts.

I like to think that Sora is bisexual. Because he very obviously loves both Riku and Kairi, but probably is forces into thinking he only can love one through social norms. I can see him ending up with either of them by the end of the series, honestly.

    • @The_Violet_Howler
      @The_Violet_Howler  10 місяців тому +9

While Sora definitely cares about Kairi, i disagree that his feelings for her are romantic. When conducting my analysis, all the moments involving the two of them that are taken as proof of romance have, upon closer inspection, turned out to not actually be romantic at all, or were the result of other characters making assumptions like the ones I talked about in this video. (I go into more detail on both of these things here: ua-cam.com/video/a2T55pt4hE8/v-deo.html )

Looking forward to the moment we get a queer-coded bit of Donald refusing to side with Sora because he's going against authority and pre-conceived notions of how important pure light is, only for Goofy to act on impulse and then Donald follow just like what happened in KH1.
Meanwhile Mickey says "They'll pay for what they did to my boys...!" while clad in a black trench coat.

    • @The_Violet_Howler

Given that the KH4 announcement trailer shows Donald and Goofy on their own adventure, I personally think its more likely that by the time they reunite with Sora, Donald and Goofy are going to openly support Sora without hesitation, regardless of any preconceptions, in order to make up for their behavior in previous games.
