It's really interesting because in the games, Riku and Kairi are great contrasting reflections of the ideas you talk about. Riku in KH1 is constantly posturing as the cool, tough guy that can totally protect Sora- and later, doesn't NEED Sora, what are you talking about Maleficent, I'm just messing with him. He visits the Disney worlds, but doesn't engage with them, seeing himself as above even most of the villains. But we actually see him engage with the Disney characters for the first time in DDD- IIRC his disney worlds in CoM are almost totally empty of people- and it's post DDD that Riku fully self-actualizes and seems a much happier, more complete person.
Kairi, on the other hand, as you've pointed out before, clings to her childhood and innocence as a way to protect herself from having to process her trauma. She doesn't want to grow up, to the point where her body is found in Neverland with Wendy Darling. If we go with your suggestion that Quadratum as an afterlife represents the mundanity of adulthood cut off from childish joy, one could argue that her getting left behind when Riku leaves for Quadratum is symbolic of the fact that she is still mentally and emotionally trapped in childhood. She can't follow because she still has growing up to do.
And on that vein, if the theories that Sora's lost his memory end up being the case, that too could reflect the idea of forgetting the "simple and clean" (ha) joys of one's youth, and a need to reclaim the inner child to be a complete person.
As an aside, I really appreciate your point about how cartoons aimed at adults seem to find it necessary to reinforce "Definitely Not For Kids" by having the characters swear, do drugs, act promiscuous, drink, engage in ludicrous levels of gore and etc to an almost absurd degree. As you noted with the point "being afraid of seeming childish IS itself a childish impulse", this sort of behavior in these cartoons comes off as almost infantile in and of itself, because young teenagers desperate to be Kewl and Machur are the only people I ever see talking and acting like that. I'm by no means a particularly prudish person, but I definitely found myself rolling my eyes while watching Hazbin Hotel because it felt like it was trying way too hard.

Oooh- I really like that! That's clever, that's a good point. And Sora is sort of the middle man in terms of being mature and childish, kind of like a good half of the KH fandom, myself included.

As always, a real treat. Not only because of the interesting and mind-blowing analysis of themes and the story, but also because of how much you manage to speak exactly what I am thinking!
I always hate it when I see people say "KH needs to grow up" or "KH doesn`t need the Disney/FF stuff". Like, what do you mean KH needs to "grow up"? KH already and always has discussed heavy, mature and dark subjects. Just because it uses Disney movies to convey them, doesn`t mean it`s not mature. Both Disney and Final Fantasy are integral parts of the franchise. KH is permeated with both and would`t exist without either. Saying that the series doesn`t need or should dischard one of them is suggesting to pull out the essence of what makes Kingdom Hearts such a special franchise (aside from the honesty in the story telling of course).
I also think that there is a lot of merit in introducing younger audiences to heavier subject matter in a controlled way, but of course - as you said - in a careful and respectful way. That is obviously not easy, but I really think it would be beneficial to a lot of future children.
Btw the Foreteller design is fantastic!

Okay, first up, DUDE! I love your new avatar! It's perfect for you! Also, that Rickroll while you were talking about the censoring of NSFW stuff in children's media was perfectly timed and funny as hell!
On a more topic driven note, thank you so much for talking about how children's media is portrayed and treated. I've honestly found it extremely frustrating over the years. As a grown woman in my 30's, it can get really annoying having to seemingly justify my love for movies and stories "made for kids". I have repeatedly had my taste in shows derided as "juvenile", even when they are better written than the stuff made for adults. And the people doing it completely disregard me when I tell them I like a good story, and I really like ones that make me feel good. As if that somehow makes me immature. *rolls eyes* Just because I have a healthy relationship with my inner child and like to indulge it on occasion doesn't make me less mature than others. If anything, it's the opposite.

Funnily enough "The Inner Child" was my working title for this video lmao.
In all seriousness though, I definitely relate to that attitude you've described. While I've mostly surrounded myself with people who were either in the same boat themselves or at least respected my interests, i've had more than one instance of being treated like it's inherently weird to be a man in his 20s who still enjoys kids shows (like DuckTales, to use a specific example). I too find that attitude frustrating as hell, and I definitely poured a bit of that frustration into this video. 😅
I'm glad you enjoyed the video though, and I'm glad you liked the Rickroll.

Last week, I was watching "The Rescuers" with my nephews and I realized how real it is. A little girl is kidnapped and psychologically abused for pure economic interest. Disney today would no longer have the courage to create a movie like that. Yet it was so important for my personal growth and I'm glad I showed it to them.

AHHHHHHHHHHHH I'VE BEEN ON THIS PARTICULAR TOPIC FOR SO LONG. I'm so glad you went and tackled this one. I especially have been holding onto the dream drop distance intro for a WHILE now because that intro treats Kingdom Hearts ITSELF like one of those fictional stories you're meant to connect to or "be immersed" in. The mere fact that there's an in-universe book written on the first arc's events is such a clear tell to me that a big part of Kingdom Hearts is how the media we consume can impact us in the waybof helping us learn or grow.

As someone who latter in life realized they were on the ace spectrum. I can’t help but fully agree with your comment on how censorship in children’s media especially Disney made realizing and understanding one’s identity really hard. Romantic love is consistently portrayed as the only way to be happy or something that makes a someone a good person. The only people in media that didn’t fit this mold when I was younger were villains or robots and even then love was treated as the only way to redeem them. This often left me and I’m sure many others feeling like we were broken or incapable of being good as we we’re constantly told love is what makes us human. Which led to a lot of confusion trying to understand and pretend to be “normal”.

    KHsona woo!
Reminded me of the fact the MoM made a sort of similar joke about his own disappearance to the way Hades talks about death. I do think the creators must be aware to some extent of the way violence and sexuality are censored in the american culture, they have their own sensibilities in japanese media, and I could picture them having a desire to express themselves on it.
The balancing of censorship in order to reach a young target audience while addressing certain subject matters really is an art in and of istelf, sometimes it can be annoying to see people talk about creators as if they were cowards when the behind-the-screen realities can be so complicated, even though I myself can sometimes be frustrated. Like, there is a reality to aknowledge, you know that the creators usually do their best with what they're given, but of course you can't help but wish for something more honest, and maybe even whole.
Team "figured themselves out at uni"! Queerness really is one of those subjects that really have the most frustrating cases of censorship. From not talking about it, to only code it into villains or treating it as a joke, to background rep that doesn't hold much meaning and can thus easly be erased, there's so much to complain about...
It's quite interesting to take KH from the angle of criticism towards Disney's over-censorship, to the point of refusing to take their audience seriously. I wonder if that means we really are going to see Sora loose himself by starting to treat his own life like some kind of "fairytale for babies" or something.
Actually KH4 feels like it might go into the themes of cynicism vs. dreaming, there could be something to say about what makes someone reach maturity, what it means to "grow up", and in that case, Sora deciding to believe in Riku, to follow him could in fact be easily paralleled with an Enchanted world, and may be a good opportunity to make Soriku official (really this world would be so perfect I hope it's going to be a thing)
Not sure if I said anything interesting this time, but yeah. Keep up the great work, I'm always super excited for more!

👏Great video Howler, also love foretelle design 💜 (Here comes the fanarts at some point kkdkd)
    The ways this series talk, reflect and critisize on Disney's attitudes almost in a Meta (or maybe very Meta) way It's interesting to analyze, and thus form theories and analyzes on the story and characters;
    The part talking about Sora being separated of this "childsh fiction", it reminded me of a post that pointed how in the secret ending and in the treaser Sora seems upset, a tired shock, with the realization of where he is;
    The two measures to straight romances and queer ones it's so annoying;
And there people expecting Sora to go like "oh yeah I've realized that always liked girls how come I never realized that? It's not like I've seen multiple straight couples throughout my journey " like what is this? A inverted queer discovery film? Lol
(I need to review this video and read the images/text carefully its midnight now fkfkk)

Also relates to the themes of balancing light and dark and not being afraid of the darkness (things that upset you or are unknown). And also Xehanort's quote about the KH reality having "too much light" and the MoM's comment about false light. I'm wondering if the Quadratum "unreality" will end up merging inseparably with KH's, or if they will simply find a balance between the two.

This is often why I still clinged onto this series for many years despite of my dislike of Disney and Square Enix, because Kingdom Hearts was made with love and heart, and is willing to show things that the Disney brand is uncomfortable with, as well as treating the Disney characters and brand with some level of respect and dignity.

    Just *yes* to everything here!
As a personal story here, I'm both trans & aroace and I didn't have the words to describe what I was feeling back then. A direct result of the censorship of children's media for me is a decade of pain and suffering due to lacking the words to describe what I was feeling.

That's funny. It's because of Kingdom Hearts that I love cartoons (like the ones from Disney) and western animation (because I already loved anime) so much. If it wasn't for this game franchise, I don't know how I would feel about animation in general (regardless of target audience).

17:50 Regarding your closing thoughts about critiques...
I wonder if Nomura & team will critique Square instead of Disney?
Seeing as KH4++ look more FF-esque. I, for one, would like to see this happen. Square has stuff to fix just as Disney does. The transition from SquareSoft to Square-Enix + key personnel leaving would be a perfect fit for Nomura. The man has got to have issues with Square...

Seeing how Disney, Star Wars, Square, etc are all doing these days, my final wish is this: for better or worse, KH goes ALL OUT with their last installment(s) like Clone Wars Season 5 did. If they manage to bring back the SquareSoft era of mystique, ambience and quality (akin to KH1 and Chrono Cross), I'll be content.
I know my thoughts aren't popular within the KH community, but it is time for KH to end. Or at least, the story we have so far. Close one book, open another. A new story.
It's not only for the fans, but the creators as well. I think they need to rest and move on as well. I'm sure Nomura & Co want to try other things, create new works, get known for something else besides KH.
As for what subject matters, themes and worlds they'll be using, I leave up to them.
I wrote this in a hurry, so I hope my thoughts get across.

I just want to start by saying i love the greatest show jump cut intro and your new avatar lol. On to the real comment:
I find it interesting that KH in itself is viewed in the same way as disney movies. When a fan of the games tells someone to play it, they are given a look like:" ...the game where you play with mickey mouse and cloud? Lame. Let me play a real rpg." as if the story of kh is lesser than other games that are "adult" like no more heros, god of war, dark souls, etc. "deep games" with "serious topics". "not like KH where mickey mouse wears a dark coat and a cartoon witch is the big bad." Which isnt the truth at all. It's specifically BECAUSE of it being "childish" that KH is so effective. It being "childish" is the point. It says that any story can say something, has a reason for existing, and we need to stop belittling what children's media accomplishes.
I also really love your mention of representation. I find it telling that there has still yet to be a gay, main character, ship in a single disney movie. There have been wlw main ships, and some mlm minor ships, but no up in the front, CANON mlm ships. I think itd be fitting for Sora and Riku to be the firsts.
Great video as always. Im looking forward to the next.

Yes, but the series doesn't _need_ to use every property Disney owns in order to communicate these particular themes. Not to mention that between the number of new shows/movies that come out while a KH game is being developed, the process of negotiating which worlds/characters the developers can use, and the fact that the writers predominantly choosing worlds that fit the KH story's themes, there's no way that the developers would ever be able to include every Disney movie/show ever made even if they wanted to.

Often in a really embarrassing way, certain people associate the maturity of stories only with heavy or controversial themes such as death, violence, or racism (automatically calling them masterpieces of quality writing).
It does not matter if then, despite their themes, these stories in some cases are poorly written because they are inconsistent (such as Evangelion, The last of us Part 2, and Final Fantasy XVI), because for these people the theme and the message behind it is more important.
Consistency is not important to them.
Sorry but it doesn't work that way since consistency in a story is ALWAYS important being what keeps the whole thing in balance.
In fact, maturity in a story, is more a matter of how the themes are handled and how well they are integrated into the plot and characters, rather than the themes themselves.
Moreover, excessive superficiality leads people to misunderstand, underestimate, and have a limited view of its true quality and meaning.
True narrative maturity can be much more complex and subtle, involving the depth of characters, the complexity of human relationships, and the ability to deal with universal themes with sensitivity and understanding.
It is not a problem to deal with themes such as death, but stories such as Kingdom hearts (or even the Australian cartoon Bluey), aimed at a small audience, have shown that it is possible to deal with these kinds of complex themes in a sensitive and accessible way even for a younger audience.
The maturity of a story is not necessarily related to its seriousness or thematic complexity, but rather to the depth of the narrative, the ability to convey deep meanings in an accessible and engaging way.
Even light themes such as friendship and bonds and the concept of "heart," of which they are the central pillar in Kingdom Hearts, are dealt with in a deep and complex way in the saga helping to give it a maturity that goes beyond the surface.
Indeed, the story focuses on the relationships between the characters and the struggle between the forces of good and evil (light and darkness), with the heart playing a central role in the meaning of the narrative. This thematic depth is what has helped make the Kingdom Hearts saga a mature and appreciated story for people like me who do not have a problem objectively calling it a masterpiece (same with Bluey).
In the end, these stories in their light-heartedness show that maturity can manifest itself in different ways and that the real challenge is about treating certain topics with sensitivity and intelligence, regardless of the target audience.
Once again you have done a great job with this video in which you show that you are someone who has studied hard and goes all the way by telling it like it is in an objective way.
You are one of the few good Kingdom hearts content creators (along with The secret reports, Titan Trainer, KingK, Fulltimegames, guzknightofnylrac, HMK and gamerjoint) who shows how well written and well crafted the Kingdom hearts saga is by debunking the falsehoods, misinformation and those stupid memes about it being ''bAD WrITTeN''.
    Keep up the good work....
