A Closed Ecosystem With Extreme Biodiversity

- In this video I show you how to make an ecosphere. For this closed ecosystem I challenged my self to make an ecosphere with as much biodiversity as possible. I added almost 20 different plants and countless of locally sourced animals. There were quite a few crustaceans in there that I had never seen before. Enjoy!

Because of you, I gathered 5 of my grandkids and had them each make their own ecosphere! They are loving it! I had them get the water from their own pond! I have to admit, I have an ulterior motive though! I'm hoping once they see critters in their jars, they will no longer want to swim in the pond! Thanks for the inspiration!
Won't work. They'll want to jump in and go find more stuff.
Kids aren't easily disgusted by that stuff.
I was eating ants at 4
@@carlosandleon me too! But it was a grasshopper
@@Fazmukadar yikes
Why don’t you want them swimming in the pond
Him: "water scorpions do bite, so we need to be careful..."
Also him: *puts his whole arm inside the jar*
Juan Sebastian I have no defense
They aren't actual scorpions. They barely even hurt.
@@MDestron2282 well still....
@@mrayrick7631 it was a joke
@@ThornAndLeafGardens I didn’t even do anything to ruin the joke :/
You've caught a Dancing Dutchman. It's indigenous to most dark, loud and strobe-lit places. I'm surprised you found on in a pond.
I had no clue, that's crazy!
i cant find it anywhere on the internet. are you sure?
alex liu I'm positive. You can see a clear shot at about 8:01 of the rare creature doing a sort of mating dance.

I can’t put my finger on why, but these videos make me really happy
me too, totally zen-ed out

Background music and nice commentary
You're probably experiencing the joy of biodiversity!
Life in jars is neat, but it's the depth of your knowledge thereof that really makes the channel. I'm glad you exist.
That’s a sponsor I can get behind
They're honestly great
@@LifeinJars bro stop saying "that's pretty neat!" your nerd phrases are getting me heated
kade buller dude he just makes ecospheres why the heck are you mad at him
kade buller bruh edit: and you like your own comments
kade buller you name already says a lot on you lol 😂🤣
this is one of these very rare feelgood-channels. you learn something, you see little animals, there is a nice man from holland. alls good over here
"But you're doing great, little plant! Keep up the good work!"
I am planning to make a closed ecosystem for the first time from my local pond (inspired by your how to video) when the ice on it melts, and this is so wholesome, I'm also going to tell the plants (and animals) that they are doing great :D
It reminded me of my best friend, who takes care of a plant in our school, and even named it
That mysterious creature dancing with the boogie worms... what a magnificent catch!!
That's my future husband, I'm soon to be Mrs Worma-lisious 💘🐛
Fighting like cats and dogs
God I didn't even know I needed that dance in my life, but I'm glad to have found out.
By the way, jokes aside, I miss this side of UA-cam. The video has many "unprofessional" moments, but I just love how much passion you put into it, and how much fun you're having. Don't ever stop having fun.
This channel is so chill, just calm music and boogie worms
This lad’s humour is priceless! I laughed aloud when he started on about the “sponsor” 😂😂😂
17:42 that worm is so groovy, he even puts sunglasses on ^^
I remember playing with water scorpions as a kid. Never did that more than once.
I love your video style. it's so nostalgic because the video style along with the background music reminds me of late 90's educational videos
I'm so glad to see you having fun with your channel. It's always a pleasure to stop by and see what's going on and then to get this nice treat at 16:30. Nice work man, and keep up the great work!
I see the lockdown has finally gotten into your mind
He finally experienced what it's like to live in an enclosed space for a long period of time. His home has become his ecosphere. He is now one with the Tubifex.
I'm not sure if they are still in lockdown where he lives.
Nahh... he was always this fascinating
Gotten for into the mind*
@@thedriftinbobber1077 not very often you get to see someone try to correct someone else's grammar and then say something completely unintelligible
The first earth benders learned from the moles. Boogie Worms teach us all how to get down.
I've been trying to replicate your ecosystems here in the united states I've been having some trouble with my first two but my third one is doing better I have some brine shrimp growing at least
What region (don't be too specific)? I couldn't imagine making something like this in central Cali but if you look back at his videos it has taken him years to be able to balance out an ecosystem properly and even still it can be hit or miss. Keep trying and you will find your magic pond! just do your research and maybe look into some local ecology studies to see what streams and rivers are the least polluted. Maybe look for waters that are the closest to their sources and if you can look for a spring or some brackish water (half salty, not 100% ocean water though). Keep us posted!
@@evilcanofdrpepper florida we have plenty of creatures and water but getting live water plants is difficult in my particular region if I had to borrow some from my fish aquarium for my most recent one
Third time's a charm.
Because sometimes you may accidentally get some fatal fungi or plants or even parasites that flourish in very stagnant ecosphere like environments. There’s nothing really to ensure you are getting a great batch of soil or plants without it having something on it. But don’t despair. Keep trying your luck and find different ponds even ponds with running water has some awesome examples that thrive are are beautiful in eco environments. Also studying the diversity of plants, oxygen and nitrates in the water would get you a head start. I’m wanting to do a plant aquarium and plants really do make it or break it in the water depending. I’ve noticed amazing results with Bog plants btw! They are semi aquatic but small baby Bog plants do fantastic and create pockets of oxygen they are low maintenance and beautiful. Just be careful they don’t smother the other aquatic plants. Also I have a terrible thing for letting algae bloom. I think it’s beautiful but it does stink. Lol the kind I have clears the water it’s a type of fungi hair. It’s brilliant green of all shades and yes it’s terrible. XD
oh wow another Dutch person who's interested in this, never thought I'd see it.
I'm so interested to do this myself, I tried it once and that failed it smelled like dead, water never cleared and there was some species I couldn't find anything about on the internet, but I would love to try again later.
You've got a new subscriber can't wait to see more videos
This guy's channel is such a trip, I just HAD to subscribe
one day, you should dump them all in one huge ecosphere container, and have an ecosphere battle royale for diversity :D
I was going to make a closed ecosphere but a crayfish snuck on some how so now I’ve had a pet crayfish for 3 to 4 weeks
Ps it’s a baby crayfish and it’s molted 2
I made a terrarium and I have spiders, rollie pollies, mites, and lots of plant life for over a year now, all thriving
I've had a pet crayfish for about a year now. I call her "Cheese & Fingers".
Put it back, it will die. I had the same, lived for 2 months, fed it well, refreshed water. Still died, you're doing more harm than good.
It's possible to keep it, just do your due research on the species and see if you have all the requirements it needs
Crustaceans are awesome
PopFlop that’s cool ,I’m thinking about making one myself one day minus the spiders
I wasn’t expecting your sense of humor but I’m so glad it’s here
Hypothetically if you left the jar closed for millions of years, new creatures might evolve
1911 You don't actually need so much time to evolve, and they still got light so it's not a closed system.
New macrospecies like lizards and birds have been seen evolving, in the timespan of a single researcher's stay on some island. Lots of small pond fish and things like moths have vastly different colouration, scale patterns, and sizes if you compare specimens from this year with ones from like, the 50s, even from the exact same place, too. So I suspect that if you got lucky and had a good eye for the changes you might get new species within more like ten years, not millions.
@@Lascupa0788 how do you know that the researcher didn't stay on the island for millions of years?
caspar valentine you right that’s a very important question
@@Lascupa0788 a professor I had in ecology had discovered that arctic charr in lakes seemed to start to split into different species, but he didn't want to call them different species and instead was fine with the morph term. Because if they would start calling all the different morphs new species, there would be at least three new species for almost every single lake in Norway and it would be way too much effort to catalogue. Sometimes I guess new species isn't always great haha
Idk how i found this but it’s my new favorite thing
16:30 I never imagine I would end up laughing on a video about water in jars
I have never noticed water droplets separating like that. Very cool video.
All of the life in my jar died about two weeks in, then there was a massive algae bloom, now it is much more clear and one plant is alive. I failed miserably
No no just give it time

This has to be one of my favorite videos of yours so far! Lol the boogie worms 🪱 😂
I'm a new subscriber, just wanted to drop a comment, you are a really cool dude and you have a lot of knowledge. I wish you and your channel all the best!
It’s so funny when he says “for in the ecosphere”
This is the first video I’ve seen from this guy but that boogie worms thing literally made me subscribe
I think this is awesome what you are doing here and it surprises me the range of common aquarium plants you have in your backyard- i.e Pogostellum Octopus, Crypt Wendtii, Val. It would be cool to have an actual aquarium with fish, but I don’t know how it would be for you with the maintenance and water changes. And of course you would have to dip the plants to make sure they don’t have any sort of parasite, or you can take your chances. Either way, would be cool.
That boogie worm ending was fantastic
this guy's sense of humour never fails to make me laugh 😂
I like how you used yourself as inspiration for this. Wonderful!
Latin words with H *exists
Life in jars: I guess it's abyssal lemme try conjuring cthulu
i love your channel. so interesting. and your narration is so soothing.
Do you have any recommendations for moving ecospheres to different houses and things? I’m afraid the car ride will ruin things!
Pack it in blankets and make sure the ride shakes it as little as possible; that's all you need. Even if shook, though, while it might upset the system it'll settle once you re-home. After a shake up, you won't have the same 'jar' ecosystem but you'll still have the same 'stuff' in the jar. Put the wrapped jar in the footwell between the passengers feet or packed in the rear. Make sure it's as stable as possible. And Good Luck!
I’m going to do this with my two oldest kids this weekend thank you I’m always looking for fun stuff we can do to bond
this makes me never want to jump in a body of water again
When I was a teen, we kept an empty fish tank outside in the back, and I was gonna empty the excess water and gunk in it (it’s been months... or weeks, I can’t remember.) and before I dump it out, I saw these tiny wiggler shrimp-like stuff in there, I was hype!
mr. jars dancing with the boogie worms made my day
5:55 that's a mosquito larvae
One of your best videos, great job man.
Finally, after over 8 years, I learned the name of the "water scorpions". After I fell into the river and saw a group of these creatures approaching my leg, I jumped out of the river as quickly as I could.
When the "boogie worms" are dancing, what are they doing?
Eating, attracting mates, making tiktok videos or do they just love dancing for fun 🤷
Well i didn’t expected that boogie worms part 😅😂😂
I shivers every time I heard the word 'jars'. not sure why, maybe I experienced some traumatic event that I wish to forget
I love this dude, I wanna make a jar like this as well
i could listen to you pronounce species names for hours
Do you know anything about making biofertlizer out of your ecospheres ?
Honestly it looks like a great time in the ecosphere
Omg i got so excited today I was checking my ecosphere that I have not looked at in a while I was filming a snail when a rock moved... but omg its a clam!!!
Wow that's really cool
@@LifeinJars I was able to measure it... it's 1/2 cm and is so cute!!!
this man is a comedic genius
To get a good image you have to turn off the light in the room to avoid reflections on the glass and illuminate the jar from above.
I cant wait to make these this summer
Idk why but after the 4th "for in the eco sphere" I couldn't help but laugh at every time you said it after that.
Ecospheres are a lot of fun, may have to make some more for my channel :) Good stuff mate, keep it up.
