I got this a number of years back. It’s cheap, easy to install, and works great. You can also get some panels with pouches and straps that attach to the back of the seat to hold items in an organized manner.
That’s a surprisingly large storage area for things you don’t want rolling around and in the way 95% of the time. But don’t want to be without the other 5%. Extra old clothes is a super smart addition. For rags or a dry set of clothes to change into if temp drops or you get wet.
In my 2013' F-150 FX4., the subwoofer is under the smaller left seat. The whole back was open and I bought two of the latches a few years ago. . Great idea.
Some previous owner put a bungee cord on mine, 2014 F150 XLT XTR & it's accessed that way. Be a good idea to oil that latch on the back of the seat too. Ours hung open in the lock position and getting the seat to latch back in place was a pain.
Just be aware that all after market latch releases will NOT work on some years F150s. I tried two different brands on my '19 and neither worked as the pull angle need to be "just right'. My release that works is a 2 foot piece of 1/8" para cord that I had for other uses and looped through one of the headrest pins Also. again depending on the model, that space may be partially/fully filled by a sub woofer and/or a 120VAC inverter. My past truck, an F350 CC had enough space plus a woofer that all kinds of things went there If you have the open space, lots of 'treasures' can be stored behind those seats.
I just put a zip tie on the end of the release pin and pull that to release the seat. Leave the loose end of the zip tie pointing up behind the seat. A spring puller works too if you know where to access the pin, the first time is a slight pain.. if the zip tie breaks it comes in handy to keep a spring puller or dental hook in the parts storage tub under the seat. You could also just make a puller out of a piece of 10 awg copper wire if you don't have a spring puller, you just need a loop to slip over the end of the pin.
Dang! All this time (got an F 150 that's 10 y.o., and a New one), and never knew how to access that "Wasted Space"! Thanks, and I'll be buying at least 1 of those gadgets, for SURE...!
Thanks for alerting me to extra storage. On the 2023 Ford F150 Lightning Lariat the bar that the latch catches will move up and down in a slot. You have to get the bar at just the right height to get it to latch again. Too high and the seat back won't go back all the way, too low and the seat won't get latched. You jut push it forward and it folds without the need to unlatch. About mid way is the correct bar positioning but you have to experiment a little. Mine moves up when I unlatch the seat. I recommend making sure the seat is latched and not free to fall forward in case you have passengers in an accident. Also, my Lightning Lariat has a module of some sort (computer?) and a woofer back there is limited room. There is also sound deadening material which I don't want to damage. Still plenty of space for straps, a brief case, or ??? BTW, my tire changing gear is stashed behind the starboard (right) rear passenger seat.
Also easy access if you lift the bottom seat it’ll raise the bench seats height, lower the head rest or remove it and you’ll have HAND access a lot easier to
On the newer chevy/gmc 1500 2012-16 you can trim the bracket on the back of the upper rear seats and you can easily fold them down I put 4 amplifiers back there in my 14 gmc sierra with room to spare
I did not have to buy the gadget. i just drilled a hole on the end of the catch and installed a small key ring which is then attached to a string. I just pull the string to unlock.
Your just being cheap, i hope the string or rope matches the interiors look.👍👍👍👍👍🍻 i would have done the same as you, but some people aren't mechanically inclined to do such a difficult job. Ops my bad, they wouldn't be able to install that $10.00 kit either.😂😂😂
I did the same on my '16 and used paracord that my daughter braided with loops in the ends. One for sliding onto the headrest bar and the other on the keyring. Black paracord is out of sight and out of prying hands. Took longer for her to braid than to install.
Not positive of the reason for the shortage area behind the seat, but I think it was for a sub woofer and amp from factory on the higher end FORD trucks. I think it was a King Ranch I saw a video on that had those behind the 60% part of the seat.
Your fix is good, but why doesn’t Ford just put in a strap so you have access right off the dealership lot? My older Ford has that, why did the get rid of it?
If you can’t get your big hands behind the seat to release the latch remove the bolt in bottom corner of the seat back push it back then it makes it easier to get your hands in there and this works for supper duty trucks as well
A friend of mine that has a F250 was confused when i told him all the stuff i stored behind my set. I told him they are the same cab so he bought the quick release just to find out he has a subwoofer and no room. He was sad.
Mine also, but the subwoofer has a cage around it. And it is only behind the middle seat and at the very bottom. You still have behind the whole rear drivers rear seat, and above the sub for soft items.
My 2015 F150 Lariat Spr Crw has its Subwoofer (Sony) behind/below the passenger side seat floor mounted against the rear bulkhead, the driver side is open as in the video, wondering if there was a production run change or different sound system requirements?
@AndrePerrault-jw6pt I know the '14 F150s that came with the premium audio had a Sony subwoofer in that location. Kinda weird slant shaped enclosure. Next generation models and the ones with he B&O systems started putting them behind the back seats.
New sub because of this, Video was posted a year ago and was $10 now its $35 talk about inflation! Great discovery on the idea though! Looking forward to other videos!
I hear you! from 10 to 35. I think I will make some jig for that. There is space back there but not too much. Either way it would be good to be able to put stuff there. Struggled today to open. Ended up putting my arm under the seat and finally pushing or popping it. I was trying to see if I had a amp or sub behind there. Just reading to replace the front door speakers and tweeters. System sound good to me 17 xlt but one speaker going bad - been cranking it up recently. Hopefully I will really like the aftermarket oem - I think they will be better.
a loop of paracord is cheaper & faster. You loop the lock & wrap around the headrest post. I can drop my back rest in a second (literally) while standing at the door.
Definitely like having access to the backseat I can’t seem to get my hand back there, so I just purchased this item and hopefully I can install it once I get my handbag to get the seat down
That's pretty cool. I seen the other guys video first so I did it his way. Had everything needed in my shop. I never imagined there'd be a part u could buy😅
Already got it accessible, got the part out, got the drill, and you say, you don't wanna do all that (about drilling a hole and putting a string)... But you still did all that... I'd save the 10 bucks or whatnot for that (part)
What is the trick to getting the seatback to latch back when you are putting everything back? It took me forever to get mine to latch and I am still not sure what I did. It seems like I had to line up (by hand) the pin that the latch locks onto.
The Sub Woofer is under the passenger side seat so it seems this is a wasted space. As of today 2023/08/29 that $10.00 release is $35.00 on that Amazon site. But worth it as the extra storage is great for us 'Be Prepared' junkies.
