It has progress pictures and things to help on it :3
NOTE People were getting confused as to why as I made a small one. I showed you how to make a small one because making a bigger one would be hassle to show. I used the exact same technique for making the small one as I did when making my large one. SO follow the instructions but make it BIG.
Its a very easy method to making it (unlike some of the other impractical ones out there!) and uses only materials that are easily accessible and cheap!
EDIT I just realised something... I was stupid and forgot to include how to make the bit that come out of the other side of the blade! But not to worry its very simple! Before you paper mache or gummy tape the whole thing cut out a piece of cardboard into the same shape as the bit that come out of the side of souls eye (do it twice and double like with the blade) and cut out the 3 circles with a cutting knife or with scissors if you can! then attach again with tape. VOILLA!
List of materials as requested:-
-Lots of cardboard
-PVC pipe
-Either gummy tape (the brand is gumstrip tape if you search it on ebay) or ductape
-PVA glue
Paint either acrylic or spraypaint

now I can make a mini sythe with cardboard and a straw because I have no money!
i dont know why i sat through this but you sticking tape to your face was my favourite thing. in the world.
I’m aware this video is super old but it’s a rlly helpful tutorial for me regardless cuz I’ve been trying to avoid haveing to use wood or expensive foam and this seems like a rlly good method!
the little scythe you made with the straw could be a good cute centerpiece if you paint it
For all those who are might be asking about the 'Gumstrip tape', if you don't have those your local stores ( just because they're not familiar with them now know them ), but you can also ask them about 'paper tape' because it's very much likely the same thing. In our country ( Phil. ), it's called paper tape, and that I am very fond of using that material for my cosplay props, and has been using it for years. Gave me the satisfaction I need. Also, you can just use tap water instead of saliva.^ ^
I FEEL LIKE I'VE BEEN LOOKING TROUGH HALF OF INTERNET TO FIND THIS. THANK YOU!!
Hello allll~~ Thank you so much for all your lovely comments on my videos,
Just wanted to ask a favour, if you could check out my cosplay page and maybe like it, I'll be super grateful! I'll be posting more useful tips and things :D

brilliant!! just what I was lookin for! going to like your page now :)
I like you o~o
Thank you ^^
OMG U MADE STOCKING's SWORD 😱😱😱😱😱
This is one of the best scythes I can find... anywhere. I seriously can't find anything wrong with it, great job!
What material you use??
I hope this doesn’t sound weird but you voice is really satisfying :)
Thank you! I've looked at every possible tutorial and this has been the cheapest and easiest to follow one yet!
@miracle moreno Ductape works to stick it together and it is very strong but rough texture so you have to paper mache over it :) I suggest a ductape whoch is not affected by water! x
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!! I really want to make a beautiful cosplay, and I didn't know how to make the death scythe well, it helped me a lot, I had not thought of doing it with a pvc pipe, this is such a good idea! Thank you again, nice tutorial, easy to understand (even for me, I'm chilean, I speak spanish and my english is not very good), you're great:)
What material u use
I made the boots by cutting down wellies to make the base. then added white strips cut out of pvc to make the straps etc. The coat you can make by using a pattern or finding something similar from a charity shop etc and modifying it with buttons and white material for the sleeves. hope this helps!
You just get high black boots, and duct tape the white. Make sure they have buckles. Or, you can order them online at Ebay or something. You can also get the outfit on Ebay I think. Or you can pull something together from Goodwill. That's what I did.
Totally went to Lowes today and got PVC pipes nice and cheap, then got free cardboard from them that they were gonna throw out :) The only thing I couldnt find was that gummy tape, I don't think we have that here. Great tutorial :) Thank you!
I cant buy the gumstrip anywhere. I guess its only sold in the UK. I live in the US
Ah sucks :/ you can use normal tape? or paper mache ove reverything? :3
You can also use paper tape, it's not as good as the gumstrip, but still helpful, and I think you can find it at any craft store
You could use masking tape
Oooooh THANK YOU this will really help me! But what where the dimensions of the pipe? And I don't live in the UK so what other tape besides gummy tape is good for painting over? Duck tape is really hard to work with.
Instead of painting the scythe could duct tape work?
yeah ive been meaning to make this scythe for months but because of school i havent really had thr time and when i did i was like eh ill just wait till summer. now its the week of comicon si i needed an easy way to make this and this was actually the most helpful tutorial ive found. hopefully it turns out!
This was two diys in one good job
Omg this is literally the only good tutorial I could find
Insted of cardboard can we use Expanding Foam and like shape it out? or will it not work and can you use hot glue to glue it together as good as PVA glue.
omg i am so making one, even if i make a small one im making it
I'm doing a scythe and iv'e been looking for one that didn't require wood and this is cool and I could do a scythe like you did. I was wondering does making holes in the PVC pipe and the slit of cardboard then putting a pencil in the holes (then glue it) help make it so the scythe is more secure so it doesn't move because iv'e done that on a Swallow (double voulge) that iv'e done and it worked well but if it doesn't need it then it's cool but thank you for making this vid it was really helpful!
I'm just gonna recommend that you not use just any glue to serve as a glossy cover for the paint because some glue doesn't completely go clear after it dries. Some glue can even smear the paint. I'd recommend getting Mod Podge. It can be found at any craft store. Can be found also at Walmart in the crafting aisle. The Mod Podge you'd need is in an orange/pink container that says "Puzzle Saver". It's meant to go over something as a glossy finish to protect the glue or serve as a shiny "shield".
Great video, Marisa. By the way will you be going to Comic con at 26th May? Because I might be going as well. I'll be cosplaying as Maka with the scythe that I'll be making from using your tutorial.
Very useful!! I may be going to a con later this year. This helps me very much thank you very good instructions
Glad it helped! :D
It would be really awesome if you could put a list of the materials we need in your description thing so that we could go along with your video. That would be easier. Awesome video!(:
Yup :D Like ones from postoffices and things? anything that works is good!
Oh my god perfect the con im going to is in one week and I needed a scythe so this was a MAJOR help
How did you transport it to the convention you were attending? I plan on following your way of doing this (because it rocks) but I have to make mine detachable somehow to fit in my car. This is honestly a huge stress point and a big dilemma because I really want to have it for my Maka cosplay. If you have any suggestions on how I could detach the blade or anything, it would be very helpful :,c
will masking tape work for neatening up the sides
is there an alternative to the pvc pipe?
to make the part on the side of the scythe that has 3 holes where souls eye is, what do you do? just cut a straight piece of cardboard and make 3 holes???
I doing a cosplay and one of my friends us being soul and in one of our cosplay skits he i has a blade on his arm how would you make just a blade?
Cool but how did you make the part with the 3 holes in it
I LOVE YOUR ACCENT!!!!
Thank you so much I’ve been looking for a way to make the prop without wood!
Yush I know I forgot how to show that bit >.< (I realised after I uploaded)
I've written about it in the description though :3
How did you make the side piece that's attached to the piece that has soul's eye on it?
have to dress up like a cartoon character for the summer fair... anime counts so this will defiantly help me!
do you think you could make the demon sword? that would be soooo cool...
Wow, thank you for this tutorial! I was thinking of using wood too like every tutorial suggested, but seeing your scythe I think I'll go with your method!
can we use masking tape instead of gumstrip tape?
I was wandering were I could find the gummy tape at
Question: Can you use a bo staff as the pvc pipe
They should have gummy tape in canada too :3 If you search brown gum tape, it should come up!
But if you want to use duct tape, yes you can paint on it, however it wont be smooth like! To smooth it down you could paper mache over the duct tape and then paint on the paper mache!
hehe, I was just about to ask about the gummy tape, thanks for having that on here :)
We don't have gummy tape here. Can I use masking tape 😊
Yup! I didn't fancy making another 6 foot long scythe haha Also this way its easier to see in my opinion than to fiddle around with huge sheets of card on camera
for the pvc pipe can i just use a straw
This is great, I haven't actually made any prps ever but I want to make this scythe.
Anyway, where did you buy your acrylic paints from, because the ones that I buy generally aren't that good.
Also, did you cover the PVC pipe with the Gummy tape before you painted it because I couldn't quite see?
Thanks a bunch, this video is VERY helpful.
༺‿༻χχαиιмє_ℓσνєяχχ༺‿༻ Micheals? Whats that? Am I just being stupid again or do I really not know what it is?
༺‿༻χχαиιмє_ℓσνєяχχ༺‿༻ Alrighty, I will have to see if I can find any XD
༺‿༻χχαиιмє_ℓσνєяχχ༺‿༻ Thanks a lot.
Can I use any other brown sealing tape as well?
Today, I have made a discovery. A discovery which will forever change my life, and those poor unfortunate people around me. I have discovered... Gummy tape! Why have I never heard of this before?!?!
How much pvc pipes I buy to be that tall? And are those pipes easy to cut through I don't have any idea how theese look lol
Also what kind of layer of glue those it has to be?
Oops haha I'm not the brightest xD Thanks :3 your tutorial on how to make the scythe is the best I've found by the way, the others were costing so much to make.
Thanks. By the way, I've almost finished my Scythe, just need to paint it and add the eye which I'll be doing separately with a piece of paper. Also need to do my coat.
Thank you so much! I was able to make a radical scythe because of this vedio! Great vedio and a really simple way to show what to do!
I like listening to you speak. LOL. I'd do that when I have the time :)
Your tutorial was the most helpful in what to use to make it. Thanks a lot! :D
do u know something else i try looking for gummy tape and i cant find it
\
I won't be in a specific location, I'll be wondering around the inside/outside of the hall all day, (probably near the sopio stand as my friends will be working their) you're bound to see me with me running about XD
How long was the pipe and how long was the blade part ?
THANK YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!! YOU'RE A LIFE SAVER
Wait what about the side that pops out on the side that silver whole thingy
One last question, where could I find you at the convention to say hi to you?
thanks for this tutorial! I'm really looking forward to making this scythe now for this years comic con in london YAY!! I think you have just saved me over £100 in buying one already made!! Just a quick q - how did you make the back of the scythe with the holes in it? I'm guessing more cardboard slotted into "Soul's eye" bit?
Thanks :3 These were very useful too ^-^ So, another question is if I could find the gummy tape online. I live in America, yeah.. but the tape looks really useful and it'd be awesome to be able to get some! Oh and you're awesome :3
Where would you go to get the gummy tape or whatever it is?
i like when u say i can use it for this or this and this
First of all:
THANKS for this Video :D It's awesome, that's exactly what I was searching for! ^____^
It seems really easy an I'm totally gonna try this :)
But I have a question: Can you make a video where you paint it? :)
will you please do something Soul Eater Crona related
(Continued from last comment) Anyway I do so hope that I can meet you at the convention on 26th May. What shall I look out for (costume wise) to know where I can find you?
Were would they sell gummy tape in america?
I'm thinking of making a scythe to fit the cosplay of an oc of mine, this tutorial is very useful since i based it off of soul's scythe version. awesome vid ;)
I live in Italy, but I think that there isn't here the "gummytape" :(
so, we do the same thing but with everything bigger, right? .3.' and thank you so much for making this tutorial~!
As for the handle, I think B&Q do smaller sized plastic pipes that you can use and attach to the card with LOTS OF GLUE AND TAPE. then for the details around the sword you can also cut card to shape~
then use a shiny silver paint for the edges and a matt silver paint for the main blade~
Hope that helps slightly :D
Yes. Fez' are cool. Very cool.
Every gummy strip i check out, it's like 10 dollars plus shipping and they want like 21 dollars for shipping but loved the video and subscribed!
I don't trust myself doing commissions for other people XD
But if I was to make Zabuza's blade I would again find a really large bit of card draw the shape onto it twice and double it up and then around the edges where there is a kinda "sharp" point cut the card but diagonally to make it slope up to the rest of the blade. then tape over that as there will be the insides of the card showing XD
Yup! I missed it out by accident but wrote it in the decription :)
You could do, but as its not hollow, I don't know how you would insert the cardboard into it. Worth trying though! Let me know how it turns out
I'm making mine at the moment thank you for this tutorial, its really helpful and easy XD but I just have two questions. The Comicon rules thingy says that if you have a scythe, it has to be in two parts. How do you think I could make it like that? I've already done the whole base, but not painted yet, so its still editable. Also, when I stuff the top with news paper, it ends up really heavy, and the pipe is kinda flimsy and bends, how could I either weight the bottom out or make the top lighter but keeping it sturdy?
Thanks you soo much this is really helpful for someone who wants to make Maka's scythe an not have it be very complicated!!
thank you so much for making this tutorial - I'm going as Maka Albarn and going to get my boyfriend to go as Soul Eater next year for comic-con - this will come in so handy - and it's all made with cheap, inexpensive materials - cheers! :D Happy cosplaying! :) xx
thank you so much for the video it was really helpful
Thank you so much, this helped me a lot
I have a con in a week and this helped a lot, thank you so much, BTW you are onto kawaii and ily accent =3
love cosplay!love soul eater!
I am going to make this based of your tutorial! I live in the US so I can't get the tape... But what paints do you use? The cost and everything to please? Thanks!
I made it small for the tutorial so its easier to see. When you make the real thing, you make it larger.
At my school we have a fancy dress thing for charity and I'm thinking of dressing like an anime character. I need one with blonde hair and glasses and is male. Please tell me before the end of next week! :)
If I take the time to paper mache, how many layers do u recommend? I made the scythe out of two thick pieces of cardboard, so I don't think it needs very much more support
do you know how to make the chain scythe?
This was really helpful other then how do I make the back part with the wholes and how did u make souls eye?
I managed to fit it in my friend's car haha XD It slot in across the dashboard with the pole stocking through the car.
So I don't know what to suggest as I never made the blade detachable :/
Omg you're so adorable and bubbly I love it XD
How big should the pvc pipe be
