No offense to Winona Ryder. She's a very lovely lady and a great actress but I don't feel like her role in The Age of Innocence required her to do much more than stand around and look pretty. I would much rather she had won a Golden Globe or Oscar for Little Women or The Crucible because she showed more raw and complex emotions in those films.
Her character was more complex than that. How you described her is the initional impression of May, that's how she is perceived by the society. May was seen as an ideal, then we watch her manipulating her husband and we understand she's not as pure and innocent as she seems to be. Her performance was subtle and nuanced. To me, it's in her top 3 best performances (with Little Women and The crucible).

The way people and the industry treated her after that incident in the 2000's was shameful, meanwhile people like RDJ can easily find redemption. There's such a double standard for females in Hollywood. She was beautiful, talented, humble and was obviously going through some difficult times and even made a whole movie that dealt with troubled young women and mental illness in Girl, Interrupted a few years before. I'm just glad she has found success again in Stranger Things, so that a new generation can enjoy her talent.
It was unfair how she was basically persona non grata after her shoplifting incident, while Robert Downey, Jr., who was repeatedly arrested for drug possession and even spent some time in prison, was allowed to make a full comeback. I remember when he wasn't insurable and Mel Gibson had to bend over backwards to get him cast in *The Singing Detective.* That's not to say that he should've been punished forever, but she should've been given the same consideration.
