having cole sprouse not speak for 99% of the movie was the best choice they could have made after choosing to cast him.

Omg I loved the thumbnail and commitment to giving yourself an 80's look, complete with the hair, which I think you rocked so well. I also did not know anything about this movie at all either and what surprised me the most is how this takes place in the same universe as Jennifer's Body. And I remember loving that movie, even though it freaked me out when it first came out. But this was a great review!

I saw it for Galentines with my bestie and just saw it again with my partner for our halfiversary, I loved it.
I don't think it wants you to take it too seriously, are there relatable moments and thought provoking ideas sure! But mostly I just felt joy? Vindication? Idk, I thought Lisa was less 'weird girl' and more '90's unpopular girl' which is a ven diagram for sure but not a one to one comparison. I think I personally teetered between the two in my youth and she definitely felt extremely relatable to me.

Lol one of my memories as a child was my weird fascination and collection of cicada shells.
I had an Aladdin lunch box that I'd go around the farm and trees finding these shells to put in there. One tree I climbed I put an empty coffee can tied to a branch. I'd sit up there with a drink in the can counting my cicada shells lol!
My friends would come over and play in the shed and open the lunch box expecting food or cool items only to look at me like wtf is this? I had the whole thing full too 😅

Hey Kylie! I love the perspectives that you share for the film! I would like to share some information that I found to help give some context to the film for future viewings.
The film is set in Illinois, likely in a suburb of Chicago. There actually is an allegedly haunted Bachelor's Grove Cemetery in Midlothian, IL, part of Cook County.
This is also likely why Cole Spouse's character is wearing the Chicago hat when he is breaking into Janet's car.
Diablo Cody grew up in Lemont, IL, which is about half an hour from Midlothian. Diablo Cody also confirmed in an interview that the film is set in Illinois. 😊

Because us weird girls can't be 'weird'. We have to be just weird enough to be alluring, but not too weird that we are scary and unsettling. Screw that. Persephone is the Goddess of Spring and the Queen of the Underworld. Why choose?
Also, I have to dip out before spoilers but I'm hoping to get my husband to go see this tomorrow night. It would be a great Valentine's Day horror movie

Woah! That’s a rad 80s outfit! On point! Also that thumbnail is truly fire! Looks so good! I saw that, over the weekend, select locations of the Alamo drafthouse hosted 80s costume themed parties for the Lisa Frankenstein screenings and your outfit would’ve slayed! You look like you would’ve fit in perfectly! I wanted to go myself but I’m still sickly and my coughing would’ve been hella annoying lol I didn’t wanna be “that guy” you know?
So much passion in this review! I read a review of the movie where the reviewer said there’s gonna be a small group of people that are gonna feel like this movie is made for them and, when I read that, I knew that you were gonna be in that group!
I think the movie going full weird and R-rated would’ve been fun for sure but I guess the target audience was teens cuz they would contribute more to the box office. Maybe the producers had only so much faith in it.
But I believe this movie is not gonna have the same fate as Jennifer’s body cuz I get the feeling that people nowadays know what kinda movie they’re getting with this one. Its already being called a cult classic by everyone and audiences are more aware if it’s influences with other movies so it won’t be as misunderstood.
Btw, if you need another movie about a weird girl putting together a friend with body parts, you gotta check out May (2002)! Would love to hear your thoughts on that one!
I’m just glad that Hollywood is apparently in it’s Frankenstein Era! Between this movie and the del toro Frankenstein, we’re also getting a Frankenstein movie directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal and starring Christian Bale as the monster!! Like What?!!
Ill be honest, I saw your spoiler section too. Sorry haha I’m just happy that you have a new favorite horror movie for the weird girls! Sorry it wasn’t weird enough lol Makes me imagine what you would do if you could go unhinged af! Thanks again for another meeting!

I had literally the opposite experience as you. I mean, I went in wanting to love the shit out of it, so I know I was searching for stuff to love about the first half, but:
Taffy was somehow both the embodiment of the vapid popular girl AND genuinely on her sister’s side. Like you said, table scraps, but still a breath of fresh air.
The fact that the men were written as such matter-of-fact monsters, from Doug to her boss to her Dad. It wasn’t made a main focus, it just was. Perfection.
I really liked the cinematography of the fucking excellent transition from the party to the cemetery, although like you said, the party scene itself did feel very sanitized.
The worst part of act 1 for me was the lack of world building, from the goth girl who just straight up hated her for no given reason to Carla Gugino’s part reducing her phenomenal range to basically playing a ridiculous cartoon character
Then act 2 really got things rolling, and it felt locked in. And then act 3 proceeded to meander around, never picking a lane, and trying so hard to lean into the surrealism of it all that it felt like it was TRYING to be camp, which is the least camp thing you can do.
The Taffy and her crush thing felt like it came out of nowhere. The way the sister acted and was framed once they got in the car was just… it’s like she was a character from an entirely different movie, and gave the main character nothing to work against in their last scene together
And then the shed burning down and the kid calling it rad and the way it was shot, it all felt like it was supposed to be a payoff to something that was never set up.
I wonder how much of the difference in our experiences is due to the movies we were comparing it to. I couldn’t stop seeing Edward Scissorhands and the Heathers, and you were coming from Jennifer’s Body.
FWIW I think the 80s pastiche worked better than the 50s one from Scissorhands (which I low-key think is insanely overrated), and as much as I wanted another Jennifer’s Body, I just don’t feel like it’s nearly at that level.
Holy shit this is a long comment.

I grew up in the 80’s. I was a weird girl. Teachers thought I was a lesbian because I wore thrifted men’s jackets. Other teachers thought my friends and I were devil worshippers because they wore black and listened to goth music. I listened to ska. People would ask my sister about me and she would say that I was crazy. Now everyone is weird. And as a Christian I feel like the odd one again but I never cared what others thought of me and still don’t. I thought this movie was cute and it reminded me of my high school days.

Fun vid.. Aqua Net was the official hairspray of the 80s, it will make your hair as hard as a rock lol.. I watched the spoiler free section.. I heard this has Edward Scissorhands vibes, but who knows.. I only remember Kathryn Newton from Freaky, which she was really good in, but apparently I've seen her in a few other things according to her filmography.. and I remember the Sprouse twins were poppin on Disney when I was much older, I pretty much know nothing about them now, but I will always have love for them simply because of Big Daddy (1999).. and I'm just a regular guy, but I've always been a hugest fan of "weird girls" in film and in the real world.. "weird" can take on many different connotations though.. Ricci is the "weird girl" queen IMO, she's still proving that as Misty in YJ, but Winona, Thora Birch, Chloë Sevigny, Natasha Lyonne, Clea DuVall and Helena Bonham Carter are queens when it comes to weird/quirky as well.. and Ally Sheedy in The Breakfast Club is one of my favorite "weird" characters.. not sure if or when I'll check this one out, but I definitely will if the stars align..

    • @BB13131313
      @BB13131313 4 місяці тому

... can't believe I forgot to mention Juliette Lewis and Fairuza Balk, both are classic "weird girl" actors too.. Parker Posey too although she's always been more on the "quirky" side imo..

8:30 Ok. I was waiting for some hint at your age. Elder millennial here, I definitely didn't get your complaints about the world building and I was wondering if this might have been a generational thing. This movie was SUCH a nostalgia hit for me and like.. so much of the humor I'm afraid is going to be lost on anyone born after 1995, which is tragic. This felt immersive for me, like the physical embodiment of one of those cheesy flashback scenes from every 90's sitcom.
I also came out of it with just.. a massive weight of how much the world has changed.
This is definitely on my list of cult classics.

However, I couldn't help but keep thinking about the age gap between Lisa and The Creature, so I found their romance was ick. I might go see it again though, lol.
I love the vibe of this movie, and I love that Lisa is goth. I felt like in a way, this movie is an homage to 80's movies, definitely Heathers and John Hughes, and gives love to goths that 80's mainstream culture didn't have. I definitely told my other goth friend about this movie.

Get out of my mind lol the 1st act I was so confused on where this movie was going to the point of joke’s timing and the non landing in the theater, had me rolling silently. Once it clicked that oh no this is a full blown comedy! Those jokes start hitting hard and it paired well with the dark enough elements for me to say oh there’s the horror I came to see. Glad Lisa Frankenstein is being appreciated, now I may have to watch it again to get what the movie was supposed to be. In theater thought, maybe this is the best mid movie I ever seen. Yes, completely agree, I've been turned to loving the movie during that Carla Gugino scene, you're right! 👍
    The worm was CGI. 😂
I hoped for a different ending, something like police not believing the sister, her being all crazy and bloody looking, maybe even accusing her, or/and putting her in the 'looney' house, while the main character walking free - that would've been appropriately sinister. The ending in the movie disappointed me to have to lower the rating, otherwise it'd be one of year's best and 5 stars!

I disagree on your “weird girl take.” I watched Jennifer’s body in the theater back when I was a “weird girl” and Needy just felt like a hot chick with glasses to me. She was a bit awkward, but never felt particularly odd. I found Lisa way closer to that trope. By act 2 of the film, I felt Lisa was awkward in an uncomfortable and off-putting way. I agree on how things are dumbed down for kids now, though. I grew up with children’s content that didn’t assume the core audience was dumb.

Wow. I just watched the movie. It was so good. I am glad this video had plenty of positive things to say. I am wearing a penticle necklace. So that is something I have in common with the fashion of this UA-camr.
Lisa Frankenstein is a movie that reminds me of Twilight. I noticed while watching the trailor. Then that made me interested enough to watch the movie. I was very pleased by how well the movie works. I got into the Twilight fad back around the 2000s. It was so polarizing. Lisa Frankenstein is the perfect solution to this controversy. It is like Twilight but better. There is the same awesome premise. There is a wierd but pretty teenage girl. Then she gets an undead guy as her boyfriend. So this story is mainly romance with horror. The downside of Twilight is that it is problematic. Lisa Frankenstein actually avoided that problem. I am so glad. The boyfriend is very well behaved for a monster. He murders people that hurt Lisa, but otherwise he is a nice guy. Lisa and the monster have a healthy relationship. They are kind and respectful to eacher. The conflict of the movie comes from outside forces, like the stepmother and the cops. I do appreciate that. I am glad that this movie did not romantasize abuse. That made the movie so much better. I really got invested and excited about the romance. Having a hot monster boyfriend is cool. However having the relationship be reasonably healthy is even better. I can enjoy the story gult free. It is difficult to balence a male lover between good and bad. Too much good is boring. Too much bad is problematic. Lisa Frankenstein absolutely nailed it. Another good example is Quasimodo from the Disney version of Hunchback of Notre Dame. He is an ugly monster, but he is also such a sweetheart. He only shows aggression under severe provocation. I so wish he got the girl in the end.

I did like the protagonist Lisa. She gave a good impression right away. She looked pretty but ordinary. That seemed right for the character. Lisa actually looks a lot like Bella, except with fluffier hair. Maybe that is the style for the eighties. It is the big hair thing. I think of dudes like the members of Queen and Bon Jovi. I think the best eighties songs to fit the mood is "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler and "Self Control" by Laura Brannigan. I recently rewatched the music videos for both of the songs. Both ladies were pretty fluffy and kinda got into big hair. So this might be the fashion trend. The UA-camr in this video is trying to get the look. Lisa does have a nice character to her. She is introverted and weird. That makes her relatable for me. I like weird stuff. I do like witchcraft, hence the pentacle necklace. The witch is a prime example of a weird girl. This video criticized Lisa as not being weird enough. I can see that. She is not as extreme as she could be. Maybe the movie was trying to balance her. The execution of Lisa is weird enough to be interesting, but not so weird that it alienates a mass audience. It is a milage may vary situation. I was personally fine. I got the impression that this was a niche movie. I have heard critics call this movie campy. I don't think so. Since I was into Twilight, Lisa Frankenstein didn't seem weird enough to be campy. I have seen plenty of eighties music videos that are more extreme than this. Such weirdness would get into camp. I love Xanadu and Rocky Horror Picture Show, and they are more extreme. Lisa Frankenstein is a pretty weird movie. However I don't think the weirdness is extreme enough to be camp. Maybe this a heavily subjective thing.
One interesting thing about Lisa Frankenstein is the graphic content. Lisa is a teenager. So the movie is age appropriate. There is some sexy stuff, but it never gets very explicit. Ditto for violence. I got the impression it was PG-13. I checked later, and was right. This video made a good point to let kids enjoy their show. I did get excited about the sexy stuff. I did think that animal-like characters were attractive. I like werewolves, furries and Beauty and the Beast. With Lisa Frankenstein, I haven't been so excited about what is essentially a dead body. The monster boyfriend is hot. He gradually gets hotter throughout the movie. I am glad he gets to talk in the end. It seems like his regeneration is complete. Maybe this is a new awakening for me. The undead can be surprisingly attractive. I got really excited about two scenes. One was when the boyfriend sleeps in the bed instead of the closet for the first time. The second was the sex scene at the end of the movie. I guess the couple got to have both kinds of climaxes at the same time.

The tone of this movie was all over the place. It can be romantic, scary, funny or exciting. It is a rollercoaster of emotions. Yet it was a good ride. The biggest mood whiplash is the dick scene. At first it was tragic, because Lisa caught her crush cheating. The crush was a regular boy from school. Then the scene is scary because the monster boyfriend attacks. Then the scene is funny because the dick comes off. In a later scene, Lisa sews the dick onto the monster. Now there is a refreshing spin on the love triangle. It does seem like Lisa has a choice between the normal boy and the monster boy. Fortunately this is toned down. It is as if the writer and director knew people hated that cliche. I guess this turns into a love square, since the normal boy cheats with the stepsister. Personally I like horror okay, and I am picky about what romances I like. This movie was really appealing while getting into both genres. The genre I dislike the most is comedy. The movie did surprisingly well. I laughed so hard in the theater. So that is a sign that a movie is doing something right with its comedy.
Lisa Frankenstein was so good, that I would definitely like to see more stuff like this. One can have their creepy romance without being problematic. I would like something where the characters are aged up and the show was R rated. I am thinking of characters in college instead of high school. Then it is legal to show them in more intense action. It could be R rated or even X rated. Now there is an idea for fan fiction. I would like to brainstorm this idea even more.
