I'm so down for a hereditary deep dive. I like midsommar more as a movie but hereditary is our generation's the exorcist. The scariest film I think I've ever seen.
Honestly yea!! Messed me up a bit lol
I still need to see Hereditary, but in my opinion The First Omen is a good contender for our generation’s version of The Exorcist as well.
This is the Midsommar breakdown that UA-cam was missing! I watched it for the first time last month for a spooky spring vlog and was so astonished by how people give other people shit for enjoying the ending as a “happy ending” I know is morally corrupt as if by extension I’m a bad person? Like you said, media literacy is at an all time low (I have more proof - I’m a high school history teacher but I will spare you the details 😂) Great video!!
I honestly would love to hear about that some time hahaha
@@HauntedHippie spoiler alert - it’s more often times adults rather than youth 🤣
lol, I guess the ending is somewhat morbid, but, come on, how can you not feel good for Florence Pugh’s character?
@@ingridplaza2867 EXACTLY!!!!!
Looove the vibes here . Absolutely sitting down for a hereditary deep dive !! The way Florence got so affected by the character is so disturbing to me cause it just shows how well written she was !
Yes please to the Hereditary deep dive! I adored Midsommar (and your deep dive is very interesting, thank you for sharing), but nothing haunted me after the fact quite like Hereditary. I recently witnessed a parent losing their child suddenly and unexpectedly and Toni Collette deserves all the awards for accuracy right down to the screaming in her husband's arms over the loss. I don't understand how Ari Aster was so aptly able to channel that pain and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.
You got it!
Scary movie. I love how so much of the horror takes place in daylight.
Great video. Midsommar is one of my favorite movies ever, and it's fun to see someone else discuss it.
When my GF (now ex-GF) said that she absolutely hated this movie because it was “boring,” I knew it was the beginning of the end….
Love this deep dive. I actually didn’t know about the scene where Christian agrees to what’s going to happen to him for his thesis. Definitely changes my opinion on his fate.
Kylie great deep dive in midsommer (2019)
Love the deep dive and the film. It’s an interesting perspective to see it as a companion piece to Hereditary. Since both films deal with similar themes and I love seeing the mutual journeys through the eyes of a man and woman respectively. Brilliant setting, characters and dialogue that Ari brings along with his distinctive direction. Beau was definitely a miss but I mean the man can retire with Hereditary and Midsommar and still be a legend. Haha
Honestly. But I am excited for his upcoming western!
Such a good clip Kylie, I also recomand you to see "The Goat and Her Three Kids" bcs like midsommar it is also a folk-horror movie
Awesome breakdown! I just watched this re-released in IMAX and I love it more than the first watch! This movie introduced me to unconventional horror and has shaped my taste in film since. All my friends hate it 😢
Fantastic video on this masterpiece of a horror movie. You look beautiful as always both Hereditary and Midsommar are both masterpieces of horror Ari Aster is a genius. Please do a video like this on the movie Hereditary.
Hell yeah so glad to see you covering this one. Great deep dive
i would love to hear your thoughts on the wicker man (maybe comparison original vs remake or even a deep dive) and it's influence on midsommar!
love the deep dive as always
An og vs remake is on the way! 🫶🏼
@@HauntedHippie I second this. You would give these films and lore the time it deserves
I still think the creepiest thing Ari Aster ever made was a short film called “There’s Something Strange l about the Johnsons” which I saw years before he made Heredity, and the way it starts, I thought it was like a dark comedy… Boy was I wrong lol.
I still gotta give that one a go
@@HauntedHippie we’ll when you do, strap in, because it’s DARK
I love to download your videos and listen to them at work, you never fail to help the time go by fast. Thanks for another great vid!
One of the best Midsommar videos I've seen on YT! Awesome job!
Great video as always Kylie 😊👍💜🐾
Insightful analysis - really enjoyed this! The way Ari Aster acted as a therapist to help Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor get into their roles is really interesting. Coincidentally, this film made it to my no.2 in my top 10 horror films of 2019 which I only just published on Saturday. Clearly it is Midsommar season ☀
Very much indeed. Love seeing it back in theaters too 🌸
You do the best deep dives, thank you for being so thorough for your minions👑💜. I love Midsommar and can't wait to rewatch on the solstice☀️.
this is a truly fantastic deep dive. thank you as always!!
I knew you would do a great deep dive! You never miss.
Amazing deep dive! Love your flower crown and dress! You’re the real may queen! lol This is probably my favorite of Ari asters movies so far and the directors cut slaps! My horror cult got a copy and rented out a theater for a private screening! I really loved it when I saw it, certain scenes I remember more than others
My horror cult also attempted to have our own midsommar party with correct food and a maypole! We did it right before the theater screening! It was pretty DIY lol but it was great time! Didn’t end up in bear skin in a burning pyramid so I consider that a win lmao
This is perfect cuz the summer solstice is happening this weekend so this couldn’t have come at a better time! Thank you again for the deep dive and enjoy your badass directors cut!
ahhh I wish I had enough friends near me for a maypole dance
Very enjoyable watch, thank you Kylie, always enjoy your deep dives and hell yeah would I like to see a Hereditary deep dive!
The fact hereditary and midsommar came from the same persons mind is scary
Just curious, but what do you mean by this? I see the same view in many ways. Now, Beau is Afraid, that’s an entirely different story lol
This video came out just as I decided I needed to rewatch Midsommar this weekend. 🖤
I was not expecting a deep dive on this but I'm here for it. I actually haven't watched this movie fully and have only seen small parts of it. But I definitely want to give this a full watch though. This deep dive (as with a lot of your other deep dives) has definitely peaked my interest more to want to check this movie out. Also cause I've always been intrigued by the aesthetic and vibe of this. And also forgetting that this is actually a horror movie. So thanks again for another wonderfully done deep dive! Also I love your flower crown and dress!!
Thank you so much 🤗🌸
Need that Hereditary breakdown. That's an all timer for me. love your breakdowns. Gimmie. Don't tease.
Not sure how you don't have more subs. Great content and a fun time :)
I’ve seen the movie 3x and adore this movie. Great deep dive video !
This was awesome. I love your deep dives. Do you edit your own videos? If so, you have a true talent. I now cite this movie as a top five movie for me. It might even be my favorite. It’s oddly rewatchable for me, and I love watching it with people that have never seen it
Loved this so much! I love this film so much-Ari Aster can do no wrong!🙌 PLEASE do a deep dive for Hereditary!❤️❤️
I still haven't seen this one, but I actually borrowed it from my library a week or two ago.. I figured I'd finally check it out and I always liked Hereditary, so we'll see what's up.. I'll probably watch it in the next week so I'll come back to this vid..
I’ve never heard anyone talk about Bobby Krlic’s score, it’s so good.
One of my absolute favs
Good deep dive!
And your beautiful hair & outfit rounds it off.
So what took you so long to do this deep dive. 🤔 Considering how you have talked about this film. So here it is and it’s so good.
Folk Horror can be so beautiful and then the Horror.
Yes Hereditary deep dive. 👍
I also must say you look real nice for this deep dive. I had to point that out. Hope it was ok. Looking forward to tonight’s watch along. I have not seen this film but as always it should be fun.
Excellent deep dive once again. I’ve been meaning to watch Midsommar, mostly because Florence Pugh is an excellent actress. Perhaps I’ll give it a watch to celebrate the Winter Solstice. As for a Hereditary deep dive, sounds interesting.
It’s a unique take on religious cults since The Wicker Man when I saw it in a theater. It blew some other folk horrors out of the water. Deadly Blessing had some Amish people but their world not dramatically explored as in Witness.
Yess, please do a hereditary deep dive!
I'm going to watch this video on Thursday night, after having gone to the special screening of the director's cut in IMAX in my city 😍 (Montreal, Canada) I can't wait!!! It's one of my favorite movies and I've only seen it once (at home). So it'll be my first director's cut viewing and first in theaters! Best way to start the summer
I'm so jealous! It was sold out in my area
also saw the dc in imax. the sound design really shined
This is one of my favorite films EVER! I was waiting for you to do a deep dive on this one in particular! Thank you for this!
Hope you enjoyed it!
@@HauntedHippie Loved it!!! So good. Great, interesting info, like always. You do the best deep dives.
Not you quoting Britney at 22:34, omg you’re the best in the game I fear
Truly blessed by Satan on this fine Monday
I’ve watched it twice. I don’t hate it. My appreciation for it grew on the second watch but it’s still not my favorite movie. However, it is a beautiful film and i will defend its aesthetic 100%.
Also, great deep dive! :)
👍👍Awesome!!
Great deep dive as always!
I have to say that I'm currently a bit on the fence on the topic of whether this should be seen as a "good for her" movie or not, though you made some good points that made me think about it for a second time. I'm still leaning more towards the interpretation that Dani is also a victim of the Hårga in her own way and that her ending is not a happy one, but I can see how the ending is also symbolically about the catharsis of ending a toxic relationship, and that it's not meant to be taken literally. I don't see it as a "good for her" ending, but I also don't see her as the villain or a bad person in the end either.
I also think there is a deep problem with media literacy if people are really pointing at the ending and saying that "the movie is bad because it teaches bad morals." I think the ending being immoral for basically everyone involved is one of the reasons it is such a great movie. Also the fact that there are so many interpretations of the entire movie and its ending specifically also speak to why it's such a great movie (even if some of those interpretations are not as good as others).
One of the things I've also noticed that could be tied to the media literacy thing is that there seems to be (at least in certain corners of the internet, mostly on Reddit from what I've seen) a backlash against the movie from the pagan community, either because it's a factually incorrect representation of paganism or because it represents pagans as villains. And as a Nordic pagan myself even though I enjoy watching films like Midsommar, The Wicker Man and The Ritual where pagans are the villains, I also kind of get it because paganism has a stigma with racism and white supremacy and some pagans are therefore extremely vigilant about anything that associates paganism with white supremacy or just general villainy, but I've also seen some really bad takes on this. Like one commet I saw described the movie as "villainizing communal rural life and portraying it as bad and portraying modern urban American lifestyle as good" and I'm just like... did we even watch the same movie? Like you said in your deep dive the movie is also about dismantling American white male privilege and portrays the Americans as arrogant assholes who literally piss on other cultures. So yeah, there is indeed a problem with media literacy, and this film is a great example of it.
Also I just have to quote my friend who after watching this just said that "the most unrealistic thing about this movie wasn't that there is an isolated murderous cult in rural Sweden. The most unrealistic thing was that they were pagans. Realistically they would have been Pentecostals or Laestadians."
That’s really interesting I wish I looked more into the paganism stuff because I didn’t happen to come across that criticism in my research
@@HauntedHippie Well, it's not really a criticism that even I have come across in any reviews or articles online, so I'm not surprised that you didn't come across it either. I've pretty much only seen it on pagan-related subreddits, so its a pretty niche criticism. However it's not a new criticism, I have seen something like that being expressed before online about films like The Wicker Man, and I think it's a theme that deserves to be explored in more detail.
Another great deep dive!! I much prefer Hereditary; Midsommar was good, but no desire to watch again. I'm one of the rare people who enjoyed Beau is Afraid, so I'm down for a deep dive of any Ari Aster films 😊
I basically did a deep dive of Beau is Afraid when it released!
Crazy. Girlfriend and I just watched this last night (first time) and have of course been talking about it.
The way we need a hereditary deep diveeeeee
Yes do hereditary deep dive please!!
I absolutely love this movie. From the color, the imagery, the emotions, the characters, the sound! “Chefs kiss”
just saw the DC in imax✨✨ i’ve only seen the theatrical and it’s one of my favorite films, this version was fun but not definitive for me. some of the extras in the front part like the argument and the extended part of the drive was interesting. the lake scene is mixed for me because i feel like even though dani stays because she doesn’t want to be without christian, her argument makes it a little harder to believe her going along with the rest of the rituals to me. I think the point of the scene that i enjoyed was it was the first time the cult mirrored dani. i liked seeing josh have a bit of personality in his fight. the thing with christian talking to the elder is that it makes it less ambiguous what he does but he’s still drugged heavily and while i think he’s more willing it’s still complicated as ari likes to be. also there’s that one scene where dani and christian kiss and agree to not fight, i liked that addition as it makes their relationship feel less one note, the whole cut really helped with that and when they are separated i feel it more. there’s so many complications with them in this version that made the ending better imo. at the end of the day i think the TC is better, some things are more ambiguous, some cuts were more poignant and i think the pacing flowed better, but god i love this film more each time i see it
Aaaaaaaaand I found my video to accompany my dinner.
A top 5 film of all time for me. Thank you for addressing media illiteracy, like yes they're both damaged people in a very damaging situation - it's really going badly for everyone you guys! Welcome to horror and fiction! 😭
Hahaha well said
I loved this movie but definitely scared more by hereditary. It’s hard to look at the guy who played Christian’s’ eyes because what happens to him in the movie was kinda traumatising to watch. Both movies got me to feel uncomfortable so I loves it. Kinda wish there could be a sequel to either one
ah I LOVE this film, it’s was horrifying and amazing at the same time and I love to see deep dives and analyses of it, there’s always something more to discover.
I’m finnish and we also celebrate midsummer here and learn swedish (and their culture etc) so this movie was extra interesting because of the information I already have!
Oooo I’m jealous. It’s on my bucket list to attend a midsummer festival over there!
It is a bit difficult to choose between Midsommar and Hereditary.. they are both very unique and definitely different tales from one another.. for me, Hereditary has a slight edge above Midsommar.. but I never get tired of watching that movie. That 2 and a half hours just breezes by..
I watched the Kill Count on Midsommar never watched the movie though. Also yes I would join a cult if the vibes are good. As long as I get cookies in the end I'm good.
Just wondering if you could be able to do a deep dive on Director, Eli Roth please much appreciated also love your videos.
Eww why him 😬
How in the world do people think this movie has a happy ending????? I find that certain men (online), are hypersensitive and seem to be almost threatened by anything that could be empowering to someone who isn’t a straight White man. I’ve only seen this once, but I thought it was extremely affective. It’s due for a rewatch. Thanks for this.
@@supertenor2767 You need to relax. I didn’t say it was the greatest movie of all time. Just that I enjoyed it.
i think some is by connecting with dani you would feel happy letting go of that baggage. also just not really reading the film ig
HEREDITARY DEEP DIVE NEEDED
imminent
I agree that media literacy is in the toilet with todays youth haha but anyone who takes movies so seriously that they let it influence them is taking it a little too far lol I mean I love movies so much but they’re not real life so they play by different rules for the sake of the story
It’s sad that people turn to dogma to find the answers to questions and purpose but as long as your belief system is strong and good, you’re a good person in my book. Vilifying others just tears us apart.
I personally loved the ending. Dani lost all she has close to her and now has this new cult family! It’s more like “happy ending?” But I love it all the same.
Also I’m so down for a hereditary deep dive! Now I’m thirsty for a big cup of pube tea! Lmfao that was hilarious!!
My concern is what happens when those people lose their faith like… who’s driving the plane at that point lmfao
❤Coolness ❤
This movie was decent. Great review.
❤Excellence ❤
❤Awesomeness ❤
I really liked the film, very well made and I do love Florence pugh. This wasn't as good as hereditary though.
Love midsommar some characters are annoying and forgettable but great 4.75/5
Hereditary is still my favorite movie Ari Aster and Midsommar is my second favorite by him, I still haven't seen Beau Is Afraid I'll probably watch this movie eventually but tbh I'm not really interested in watching it and Ari Aster next movie Eddington sounds cool a Western black comedy personally this sounds more interesting to me than Beau is Afraid
Beau is Afraid can be skipped tbh
@@HauntedHippie yeah i figured as much
beau is an interesting watch for sure, but if you’re not intrigued it’s not going to win you over
I've only seen the directors cut. Do you think it's worth seeing the theatrical cut?
I do prefer the theatrical cut yea but it’s not a different movie by any means
it’s better i think. most of the dc states things that you can understand without. i think overall it trims some fat and has a better flow to it
As a Swede, it is obvious to me that this film wasn't shoot in Sweden, and most of the rituals, except the green pole dance and the herring eating, aren't common to our customs so it just looks fake to me. I do however appreciate how it captures the Midsummer light we have, when the sun never settles. And light, permanent light, is just as scary as eternal darkness!
Well he incorporated elements of many different cultures that he studied so it shouldn’t seem accurate to solely Swedish customs. That’s on purpose
Like it’s a death cult, surely you don’t WANT it to be 100% accurate to your culture
"It's a movie, it's pretend. You're an adult, you should know this." - I loved this line.
Was quoting the great Britney Spears 🙏🏼
@@HauntedHippie oh man, I had no idea. Also, I'm totally here for a Hereditary deep dive.
Midsommar has been on my nope list for a couple years now. I love horror movies but i seen an edit of Midsommar and there was a scene with the guys face and the way he looked at the camera traumatized me so bad i vowed never to watch it! As a member of the horror community, i've been so fascinated by it because everybody speaks so highly of it! So please let me know if it unsettled you the first time you watched and think i should get over myself and just watch it.
I think as long as you look up trigger warnings you should be fine. I was disturbed on my first viewing but it’s also just a gorgeous piece of cinema. Nothing close to a lot of movies I have on my own personal nope list
Love this movie, saw it twice when it first released. Due for a rewatch maybe. Aster is such a a great director, he hasn't made a single bad film... yet.
Never heard someone prominently pronounce the end of the word that way before. "MidsommAR".
Just giving it the ol swedish pronunciation
@@HauntedHippie With an American accent.😂 Not even Aster says it that way, just struck me funny.
@@MikefromTexas1 I’m actually pronouncing it how he was during press. Dunno what to tell ya
@@HauntedHippie Really? I've seen like 6 interviews around that film and he's always just said "Midsummer".
