I am an autistic person who went through the American special education program when I was growing up, and I've always had class mates who were autistic also. And one of my classmates who I've always thought had autism was like a human calculator when it came to math. But since he was like a human calculator when it came to math makes me question if I was wrong about him having autism and that he had savant syndrome instead. There is a lot of overlap between autism and savant syndrome.
I had a SPIN in psychology since age 12, to the point I got a master’s degree in counseling. I self-identified “ADD” (actually should have been ADHD-PI) at 16. Was formally diagnosed at 22. Had my mother suggest I was “maybe Aspie” at 21. Made it to FORTY still thinking I was “maybe a bit Aspie, or autistic, or whatever” and that the increase in autism diagnoses was due to calling everyone who in, say, 1990, would have been called, ah, shall we say, “slow”, “autistic”, because parents would accept that label better… I tried taking online autism tests and got 🤷♀️ back, which supported my conclusion. I took a masking test and that came back as a no because I CAN’T mask well! 😑 It took my taking the RAADS-R and scoring above average FOR AUTISTIC PEOPLE for me to pause and go, “Now hold up here a minute, what were those domains of autism, again?” 😳 Oh, and while my IQ is silly high, both my daughter and her daddy, my late husband, are/were autistic and have/had very average IQ’s. 🤷♀️ P.S.- Hope you’re at least doing a bit better, Thomas. ❤
I think most people get confused with things like the AQ 50 dues to not understanding that scores below a particular number dreduces the licklyhood of you being autistic and the further up increases the likelihood of you been autistic. I think they have this idea of a spectrum mixed up with a lot of other ideas
Hey there, Thomas. Just a little more history on the vaccine/autism myth. Recently, I was sorting through old boxes of papers. I came across an article in our local newspaper dated 1992. So, six years before Andrew Wakefield's bogus study. The parents of a toddler claimed the vaccine caused their daughter's autism. They said she was walking, talking, toileting normally, etc. Apparently, after receiving the MMR shot she began having seizures and lost all skills. I think it was anecdotal stories like this that Wakefield jumped on. It's unfortunate because vaccines have been proven over and over to be life-saving. Anyways, I thought you might like a little more history on it.
My kids were getting vaccines in that period. There was definitely some conversation about it before Wakefield, but they were taken for what they were: anecdotes that needed to be understood but not societal panic inducing. Wakefield’s article made those fears legitimate and turned it into a national news item, making sure everybody heard about it. Most scientifically literate people still considered the value of vaccines to be greater than the supposed risk of autism, but many people did not. We’d still have anti-vaxxers without Wakefield, but their influence would be so much less, and maybe measles would still be eradicated in the US and UK.
How does Nature Make a Pack Animal a Pack animal and a lone Animal a lone animal, And do you know what happens when a pack animal is no longer with other Animals ? How its behaviour changes ? And how a lone animal acts when around other animals ?
Saying some is a little autistic is like saying that someone is just a bit paralysed. It clearly it is not an ok thing to say. You are either autistic or not, same with being paralysed, either you are or not.
Did you know a human Child can only remember flashes of memory before the Age of 7 , if anything at all Some like me can remember everything like a movie from the Age of 3 , but before then nothing but a flash For these "touched" people to know the exact time and date of the start of the recording process, would be akin to "counting the Angels dancing on a pin" Your a miracle , learn to remember that
I have autism, yet did not receive the MMR as it wasnt released in the UK until 1998, long before your man Wakefield appeared on the scene. Thus, in addition to being autistic i also contracted measles, mumps, and rubella, as well as whooping cough. They were all bloody awful. Oh, the irony!
I have been sharing your videos on our Facebook page, Tourette's and other disorders. (I don't like that name, btw.) I was diagnosed at age 63,my daughter El at around 11. I'm trying foster more education here in the states where autism is being demonized more and more every day. 😢
Thankfully, back in 2018, I didn't have long to wait - which was around three months. I am certainly glad that I picked that time to insist upon an assessment. Familial traits and reading up and making connections before that helped a great deal. Autism wasn't the first click for me however. I was looking into dyspraxia and dyscalculia, plus a tidy helping of life long anxiety and a lot of mind traffic and found that these were likely compatriots to autism. A book called 'Caged In Chaos' by Victoria Biggs was a useful paper trail.
High-functioning autism is not caused by vaccines, but it is possible that vaccines cause deterioration or adversely affect the already sensitive systems of the autistic,
Not understand sarcasm is also a good example in my opinion anyway i was diagnosed with pdd-nos and i was wondering if other people here with the same diagnosis also struggles to connect with both neurodiverent and ✌normal people✌ seems only i have this problem sometimes
Questions do need to be asked in US, going from 1/150,000 to 1/36 in a decade, that just aint genetics, 🤷♂️ i dont know any answer but some one needs to look into it and study, Something other than genetics must be playing a role,
Not a chance, testing and diagnoising consistently got better year in year out at the rate it shows, New techniques would take time to implement rather than seeing dramatic increase in rates. Autistic myself, numbers dont compute on sole diagnositics alone, also data from 8year olds, didnt mention, anyway just think some unanswered questions
@@8ballrocco731autism is socially constructed, as people's perception of autism has evolved they're starting to notice more people fitting into the description of autism. People who would've gone unnoticed because they can mask are starting to be noticed. I can't really say I understand it but I also think it's incredibly hard say if it is perception or increases in autism which is driving the rates. I'd say from the amount of undiagnosed adults it's most likely a lack of diagnosis rather than increases in autism. I also think socially our society is evolving to be more accepting of differences meaning kids are masking less than previous generations of autists.

Thank you Thomas. Nicely done. A good video to link to a friend or family member who is supportive and curious.
When I heard you say Iron Maiden, I was like "did I actually hear him say that?".
Well, everyone is a bit pregnant, right? Hmmm.

Lots of good information! Loved the analogies!

I don't know why you decided to have two cameras but it's actually quite annoying.

It's because of better diagnosing. OBVIOUSLY. 😮 PAY ATTENTION.
