I can't get all those empty seats, I wish I had been there.
Eliahu Inbal is the best!!!
Es macht mich traurig wenn ich sehe wie leer die Konzertsäle sind
It seems Mahler may have completed it before he wrote his Second ( Resurection ) symphony.
It would be heard in piano transcription possibly before being orchestrated.
May have? Very clearly. This is the first version of the opening movement before it was revised.
Its a bit slow. But nice performance!
The recordings of the Mahler symphonies by HR SO with Inbal are already a benchmark, artistically and in recording quality. Sadly not to see a full hall at this concert.

Wordt op 3 april 2022 uitgevoerd in Maastricht Theater aan het Vrijthof.
Interesting variation on the first movement of Mahler's Symphony #2.
@Steven Moore I think the orchestration here is pretty tasteless compared to the final version, and I can understand why Mahler corrected it. For example: that cymbal clash at the climax of the concluding march just feels pedantic and out of place.
This is not a variation of the 2nd symphony. Mahler wrote this piece “ The rite of death” (Totenfeier) first. Mahler played this to Von Bulow and his reaction was inesperated. A couple of years later, mahler used this piece as the first movement of ONE OF THE MOST MUSICAL JEWELRY “ His 2nd symphony. “Resurrection””
It would be more like the first movement of the second symphony is a variation of Totenfeier.

Mahler's second symphony, 1st movement?
raw version of that
Poema Sinfônico de 1888, mais tarde utilizado para a 2aSinf. com algumas modificações.
Original conceived as a tone poem before integration into the Second Symphony, with some changes made.
Beautiful performance.
Exciting and gripping performance of this romantic masterpiece by Mahler. Many thanks!
Ich bin erregt
This was truly exhilarating, but one ought to listen to Boulez's recording for what the partition really sounds like in comparison to the final version. Too much rubato in this performance, unfortunately (although this is a common mistake among Mahler conductors, ignoring the composer's negative tempo warnings and letting one's emotions take over at the expense of authenticity).
But what is "authenticity"? Art is not an exact science, and performance should add something to the music rather than try to play it like some automaton. So long as there's an interpretative idea, the performers are free to do with indications what they like, as far as I'm concerned. It's not as though there's a dirth of "regular" Mahler performances.
Erregende und spannende Aufführung dieses romantischen Meisterwerks von Mahler. Vielen Dank!
