So how did Wales knock over Italy? | Six Nations 2023 Analysis

- Опубліковано 13 бер 2023
- It was supposed to be their day. After several rounds of rubbish, Wales finally put together a performance on Saturday, boiling over Italy to likely avoid the wooden spoon and give themselves something to build off. So what did Wales get right, and just why were Italy unable to execute?

One of the fascinating aspects of rugby is that psychology and emotional pitch is still so important. And I think Italy lost psychologically.
Dealing with being favourites is real psychological barrier to get over. Italy have never had to deal with it before. Thus, when they found themselves going behind, they panicked when composure was required.
They are still improving and will learn a lot from this, it's just another necessary step in an upward curve.
This. This is exactly what I was thinking throughout the game. Having supported Ireland for decades, there is a peculiarly special fear that came (and still comes) with the tag of favourites. The level of expectation on yourself, never mind from outside (fans, media etc.) can absolutely mentally hamstring a team and drag them down, and I honestly believe that is what happened to Italy here. I've seen it happen multiple times with Ireland (especially in the early 2000s) and I can't even say that we are entirely over it (the fans at least, I think the team may have turned the corner).
Squidge: “Finally, a Wales victory! Let me focus on this match first!”

I know it's tough but I'm sure England will come back strong! You invented the sport after all
Hopefully after the world cup though 🇫🇷
@@treebuntu I legitimately appreciate hearing support from other supporters. I love our rivalries and I think rival nations are saddened by the poor English performances at the moment. We all want entertaining rivalries, not walkovers.
Well done France, your biggest victory over us since the siege of Orléans 😂
@@treebuntu >As a french fan, I'am really fed up with all the guys like you, spreading their good sentiment toward England all over the social medias. We smashed them and we are happy with that. We deserve it, and they deserve it too, for their continuous felony in this sport, and everywhere else. I' hope we'll smash them again next time, and over and over again !
Yeah, what France did was brutal. I didn't even feel that England played poorly, just that France were on fire that match. We're next...

I genuinely fear for the Welsh as its also in Paris
I am ever so holding onto my hat, on the edge of my seat for your France vs England analysis!
Going to be a Cracker!
Find it really funny how Italy literally had 3 fly halves on the pitch and still elected to usually use none of them for distribution
3?
@@NosajKnows Allan, Garbisi, Padovani
What you on about Garbisi and Allan were consistently used as distributors throughout the match. And Padovani wasn’t because he was on the wing and is a more dangeours runner than their other distributor Brex
@Calex sorry I meant like off first phase moves and that, they used Pierre Bruno quite a few times to try and throw trickier passes even though they could have easily swapped Padovani and Bruno. My mistake for not clarifying

Another cracking analysis and vastly entertaining take. Thanks!
Normally would just roll my eyes at this, but having read through the comments so far, for that section griping that Squidge chose this game over the other two, for godsakes, in the end it's his channel!
He gets to choose what he wants to do. He's a Welshman, its' only natural he would choose (on occasion!) to focus on his own country first (especially when they win). Unless paying for his work, no one really gets to grouse about what he covers or doesn't, we just have to accept, sit back and enjoy the mindbogglingly detailed (and hilarious) output.
Btw, as an Irish supporter, anyone who genuinely thinks he *hates* Ireland needs to move on. The more you kick up that idea, the more he deliberately trolls us (especially around a player that is doing well, e.g. the James Ryan gag here). It's patently clear from his vids he respects and admires the Irish team, but also gets a lot of fun out of getting a rise out of those fans who bristle at what are clearly jokes. And when the time comes and he does finally finish up, you could lay money he'll do a tribute segment for Jambelly Sexpot.
"thank you, patreons for making this all possible " pointless biased videos about bad teams that rely on the ref to win? ignoring the big games?

Well said! And as an Ireland fan, the positive I'm taking from him not covering the game is that we won't have to hear about how exactly Adam Beard would've scored the try James Ryan dropped...
@Maximus except that... he is part of a much larger agenda and network of people and so I'm allowed to sit in the comments and kvetch if I want.
and if just one person wakes up to the agenda that they're pushing guarantee you there will be alot more waking up.
so it's not just.. "one person ha ha we won't miss you.."
people all over the world are waking up to the agenda and a little sunlight on their machinations can be a good thing.
First time ever, that I can watch a Squidge video and say: I watched that game live in the ground.
Yes, I was Rome watching that game (as a Wales fan obviously, since I've supported them since I've known rugby).
Why would you torture yourself (I jest...I'm English) :D
What's the atmosphere like with an Italian crowd?
@@RubyDoobieScoo Italians tend to be loud and passionate, but I always feel like ten screaming Italian fans (which I am) can be overwhelmed by a single Anglosaxon bloke shouting the name of his country. BTW I always do my best, and the thing I like to do is to yell very loudly the exact birth name of any player while urging them to do their best, so that sometimes I get strange looks by other people
@@RubyDoobieScoo The noise for the anthems...I'll never forget it. There were so many Welsh fans there and the Italians sang with passion. The first half was phenomenal. The Welsh contingent made a huge amount of noise, whilst the Italians were fairly silent. In the second half it was battle of screams though.
Coolest thing of the day was to be part of the 'player down on the pitch, everybody looks to the screens: *replay*, whole stadium goes "oouuuuuuuu", referee's whistle goes and signal for the TMO, cheers and boos erupt around the ground'... goosebumps.
The ongoing use of the Tommy Bowe meme is spectacular. Long may it continue.
Thank you! Fantastic breakdown of two teams with a lot of a potential - and a lot of things to work on, in the run-up to the World Cup. Really looking forward to the Italy deep dive after everything wraps!
I was recently re-watching Chasing the Sun (Springboks journey to winning the 2019 World Cup), and lo and behold, you're in there! Good stuff, love you work!
Coming from a weekend were England lost by such a margin in Twickenham and Ireland had flankers throwing in lineouts, this feels like a video no one wanted, about a match even fewer really care about.
But, somehow Squdge still makes it entertaining, impressive.
Great video, glad you have slowed down the delivery a little bit, I can follow it now!! 👌
Have you considered making an "introduction to Rugby"/"watching Rugby for beginners" video. something that could give people looking to watch the RWC a chance to learn the rules in a coherent manner? I personally held off watching Rugby for years because it's a lot more confusing than Soccer or Basketball, I took me a few years to figure out what constituted a good kick. Rucks have only gotten more confusing as I've learnt the game.
I watched rugby for 20 years before I found Squidge. What I thought I knew and what I've learnt from him are very different
It's something I'm wanting to try and do for the World Cup this year, hopefully I can squeeze it in!

Loving your work as ever, my dude
Haha no videos on Italy all tournament until they play Wales... and then it comes out quicker than any other video has done before.
Can't disagree with any of analysis. As an Italy fan it felt like every play was snatching for a "wonder try". It was just to forced and never had a rythem.
Italy needed to keep their composure and not rush their plays. In the end the pressure of chasing the game led to them making errors and getting yellows. They were not expecting a Welsh gameplan like that and it frustrated them.
They were also frustrated by the fact that apparently the same rules do not apply to both teams on the pitch. It was worst against England and Ireland but this could have been a much closer game. That wouldn't have mattered with better execution from azzurri. But still, it is quite annoying to be honest
While I agree some calls were not ideal, some were completely self inflicted. Bruno tackling in the air, during a penalty advantage was just poor decision making and we can't blame the referee for that.
Italy have great attack (as shown in these analysis videos), but I don't think they have a gameplan to win a game over 80mins. They need to build pressure, win penalties and build a score. The frightening thought is, I think Crawley will get them there!
Excellent as usual, cant wait for your posts.
squidge if you've jinxed us out of the grand slam I'm gonna be so upset
Taking nothing away from this video and nice to see our fine Welsh neighbours get a thoroughly deserved win, but I don’t think there is any real need for Squidge to cover the England France game. We all know what happened and he and his team put a huge amount of work into the videos,, how about we draw a nice clean line under the whole affair and move on with our lives. Save him the time and effort and Save all us fine, honourable and united rugby supporters having to distract our minds from more important things in life…..
R u English and dont want a breakdown about how shit u were by any chance?😂
🤣🤣🤣
Mmmmm..... Non !
Another great video
The Italians were not clinical enough in this game. They didn't finish opportunities and gave the Welsh soft tries.
I know squidge doesn't like focusing on ref decisions but for me there are 3 key moments in the game.
Firstly, Owen Williams try saver. Lamaro was correct, he is offside.
Law 14.10: "offside lines are created when at least one player is on their feet and over the ball, which is on the ground"
Ken Owens makes the tackle on Ruzza, 2 Italians are over the ball. That's enough to create an offside line.
If the ref sees it that way, penalty try, yellow card for Owen Williams. Instead, Wales exit, get a penalty, stick it in the corner and cannone collapses the maul. Penalty try, yellow card in Wales favour.
Secondly, when Italy had advantage for 5m penalty and kicked cross field. This was a poor decision with Liam Williams covering that space. From the angles seen, there was minimal contact in the air. But a huge swing in Wales favour again.
The third moment was almost the exact opposite. Liam Williams takes out an Italian player in the air. The ref says it's a fair challenge and awards a scrum to Italy for a knock on by williams which never happened.
A little consistency on the threshold for foul play in this area would be great.
Overall, I feel this is not the dawn of a Welsh resurgence. I think they rode their luck very well and that's a useful attribute for a team to have.
I think the Italians had more errors but also way more right in their game. They have easier problems to fix.
I guess next year will tell a lot.
I like your ending. I am also feeling that there is a very slight chance that Wales could pull off a victory in Paris if they play a blinder. In fact, I bet £2.68 on it. That's how confident I am.
Brilliant, as always, but even more brilliant still is your T shirt! Love it 😊
"......Booting from a floppy disk"😂
Reading all the "Waah...ref...waah" comments(not from Italian fans I must say) It reminds me of pretty much every Welsh win I've seen since the 90s. Wales are not a good team, but deserved to win this. The officiating wasn't perfect (as ever), but Italy were not denied their win by decisions. Lamaro spoke perfectly I thought.
That's because the refs are always biased towards wales. They gifted you a six nations when you weren't even a top 3 team 3 years ago.
@@s1.m511 Grand slam was won by pure class. Pivacs trophy had a lot of luck involved.
Yes Lamaro spoke as the great skipper that he is. And watching the whole match I could only agree with him and with Squidge's final conclusions. But, pointless as it is, only a day after I happened to watch some details of the clips in this channel and the weekly post by Nigel Owen. Which I recommend
Ken Owens was fantastic last weekend, chwarae teg.
4.26 the word "ten" is uttered and is it me or does the ghost of tommy bowe appear fleetingly across my screen?
Thanks for making a vid abt Italy Squidge 😢😢😢
I expected Wales' defeats v Ireland, Scotland and England, and (based on team selection) thought we would pip Italy, but we did ride our luck, Italy were their own worst enemy at times. Wales will need a monumental improvement v France; they have better players than Wales, are at home, hitting magnificent form and won't waste chances as Italy did, can ruthlessly exploit Wales' inexperience at centre- i hope Wales have learned from the times Italy broke through. Even with Gatland making improvements it's likely to be a hard learning day for Wales- we surely need more time to grow. I'm not getting carried away by one win.
Another great video thanks
You missed Wales tackling 1 man (14:55), 2 men, (14:56) 3 MEN (15:19) OFF THE BALL while Italy is making a line break... Yes, the 2nd row bottled it at the end, but tbh for the 3rd tackle off the ball, Italy should have been awarded the penalty try.
Also, the yellow card for the challenge in the air, which Wales got away with when they did something very similar.
It did seem like the refereeing wasn't being applied equally.
It struck me just how much Garbisi looks like Dan Biggar when having a strop about something.
While the Dyer try was a fortunate bounce it shouldn't take way how excellent that kick was from back foot ball. By hitting grass and the speed of the chase even if one of the two Italians gets the ball they are most likely getting dumped into touch or over the line for a 5m lineout or scrum to Wales.
Loved this video, seeing lots of similarities to my Rocket League team in terms of execution and decision making
What a damning indictment of Italy 😂
Great analysis.
Italy: Surely we've got Wales; Wales: aye siwmae, no
Italy: Surely we've got Wales; Italy: No
It's kinda a shame that the year netflix decides to make a documentary about the 6 nations is also a year where it gets completely dominated by one team with the last round essentially being a formality. The only real story lines here are two teams replacing their coaches with one (Wales) not improving and the other (England) becoming noticeably worse.
You can see he's Welsh when the first video is a 20 minute feature on the egg and spoon race. Don't get me wrong I love it
“The only man to get sun tan in Bridgend” lmao😂
Definitely seemed like the ref was a ball breaker for the italians. Also disappointed they didn't get the penalty try, that was the moment that killed the game off
Yeah @ ;least 3 players taken out off the ball in that almost-try that was dropped
What penalty try?
@@rhyd1109 ua-cam.com/video/WZOi-2BBtz4/v-deo.html
The referee was absolutely shocking
@@gwh3013 I mean he did acknowledge that, but tbf to him he called advantage over given the distance that had been made. Hard to argue when the off the ball tackles were in Italy's half (and we're in part why they even made the line break as the entire Welsh defence bought and tackled every dummy runner) and the ball was then dropped over Wales try line. If that's not enough distance to let a ref call advantage over then what is?
The Italians felt that they were referee”d differently to Wales in the first half and their public calling out of this on the half definitely changed that in the second possibly saving them a red card.
All great and accurate but the offside line is formed at a tackle, not at a ruck. And still the welsh 10 is not offside but he tackles Brex slightly before he gets the pass
great detail on the 13 channel D!!!
Webb should have been playing from the first game against Ireland. When Webb went off, Tomos Williams came on and within two minutes had failed to get the ball out of a maul, giving Italy the scrum from which they scored their second try.
Honestly don’t think Italy have anything to be sorry for. They’ve played great rugby all tournament, and probably needed the wake up for maintaining execution. Wales on the the other hand have both Fiji and Georgia licking their chops at being the teams to eliminate them from RWC, and advance themselves. They have a lot to hard work ahead, and not a lot of tests to get there. It’s gonna be a real test this autumn.

Looking at your comments, it seems a lot of Italian players ran into welsh defenders in front of the ball carrier, which should have been worth a few penalties. Probably makes up for L. Williams not being penalised, but still, it seems Italians used blockers more as in NFL than in rugby?
Hey now squidge, their grand slam is not a sure thing. England could beat Ireland next week... If I believe hard enough
So, tomos williams is Ian Mckellen. Talented? absolutely, with an amazing highlight reel, but still, Cats. Rhys Webb is Seth Rogen? I can see that, sure people remember him for his weird individuality but he also can deliver one hell of a performance in An american pickle. Kieran Hardy has gotta be the likes of Jack O'connell, criminally underrated and always type cast, needs better opportunities. Dane Blacker is pedro pascal, he is just perfection in man.
This is my kind of comment. Outstanding work.
Reuben Morgan-Williams = Ke Huy Kuan: That kid with the funny name from, you know, that thing. Didn't realise he was still around...
15:26 in the video waiting for a fair and unbiased analysis of a poor call by the ref and here we are "there's no tackle so there is no offside line" while ken Owens is literally on the ground holding Ruzza's legs. This is a legit penalty try and sin bin for Wales' wing. But I think that avoiding wooden spoon makes someone both happy and blind
Oh... play there! xD

Hi squidge, can you explain why the blocking italy does is not illegal, I am sure it is but you seem to think it's OK. So now I'm confused
To put it simply the major difference in our game was Rhys Webb, a scrum half who actually plays heads up rugby. Constantly scanning for opportunities and keeping the momentum going as well as commanding the forwards very well, sadly all the qualities Tomos Williams severely lacks at the moment and you can see that the moment he came on for Webb.
