Donna, you’re exactly right, it’s iconic and all the artists are great and it’s the best charity song ever written and performed and something like this will ever happen again! Bruce and Stevie nailed it!!
You also know this track was written by MJ and Lionel Ritchie? And produced by MJ's producer Quincy Jones. Fun fact, the year before (1984) there was Band Aid, in which this was inspired by. Band Aid was the same idea but then the greatest British and Irish singers in it. Song was called Do They Know It's Christmas.
I was only 10 in 1985 when this came out and being blown away by who was on this, this vid was shown on top of the pops I believe and our family like yours was naming all involved. This was Americas response to the UK/Irelands ‘feed the world’ and what a response it was…amazing
I always thought this was a Beautiful song. You guys did a Great reaction 🤌🏼 I agree with Donna, I can't imagine how much Money was in that room. But it was Awesome !
This video is flawless in its flow, and it seems seemless, but in reality its spliced together really well. It took them 8 hours to record. Each person basically recorded a part then they took all the video and splced it to seem as if they were a choir. Whoever matched the singers together was a genius though.
Donna, I know exactly how you feel. I can’t stop smiling and tearing up every time I hear it. And I’m so glad that the kids I see reacting to the song get it too! Bruce & Stevie was my favorite duo too 😊
For the top Canadian singers, watch Tears Are Not Enougn. The Canadian talent came together like We Are the World to raise money and awareness in Ethiopia and as a group, they called themselves Northern Lights.
Dan Aykroyd was representing The Blues Brothers. From my understanding, he was on the studio lot conducting other business and just happened to walk into the studio. He was given the sheet music and was told to join in the chorus.
This was recorded in one night (5 hours) after The American Music Awards. They did it at AnM Studios in Burbank (Hollywood) California. From what I recall in the documentary, it was Michael Jacksons idea and he called Lionel Richie and they met at a restaurant. Jackson told Ritchie his idea, and then they called Quincy Jones and Stevie Wonder.
It was actually Harry Belafonte's idea. He recruited Jackson and Ritchie to write the song. It's in the Netflix documentary "The Greatest Night in Pop"
The song was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie in a couple of hours, arranged by Quincy Jones and recorded over night. The location was Kenny Roger's recording studio in Hollywood. Waylon Jennings was invited but left before they shot the video. When he found out the song was going to be a pop song, he said, "this country boy don't sing pop music" and left. Friendships were formed here, many of these artists never met before. Steve Perry and Kenny Loggins later did a duet together. Lionel Richie wrote "Lady" for Kenny Rogers. Billy Joel and Ray Charles did a duet together. Kenny Rogers and Kim Carnes had a duet, Stevie Wonder and Dionne Warwick, both here sang "That's what friends are for" along with Gladys Knight and Elton John who were not here. Harry Belafonte came up with the idea of bringing everyone together on this night. Harry's manager called Quincy Jones first, Quincy said you better call Michael because he's leaving town right after the Grammys, Michael postponed his flight, Lionel was second. Kenny Roger's studio was used because it was the only studio that can fit everyone. Finally, there was a sign on the door that read, "Leave your egos at the door", meaning once you enter this studio, we are all on equal ground. Nobody is more important than someone else. They were in the studio until about 4 AM. They had to get the song done because they had other engagements to get to.
There was a similar gathering in 1991, the talent wasn't on this level but still special. It was to show support for the troops during Desert Storm. "Voices that care" by Various Artists. The video can be found on UA-cam.

I remember when this song was first played on the radio, before the video came out. It was fun seeing how many we could recognize just by hearing their voices. I think that is how/why most of these singers were included in this recording. For those of us who lived during the golden age of radio, ALL these artists' had songs we heard every day on the radio. Their names and music were part of our everyday lives. Now you have to go searching for them.
This started in the UK, with Bob Geldof gathering the greatest British artists at the time, back in ‘84. They did the original «Do They Know It’s Christmas», which then inspired MJ and Lionel Ritchie do write this one and do this. Give it a shot - I KNOW you will recognize some of those artists, too😊
Actually, before there was this "We Are the World", there was Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas", which was just as chock full of legendary talent as this one was. If you haven't seen it, then you need to find it and watch it.
I would love a whole documentary on what their agents went through negotiating the various decrees to which each of their stars would be featured in this video.
Bruce Springsteen recently did worldwide tour and was in Ireland few weeks ago. He is well into his 70s now still playing 3 hour sets and standing up for that long to. Thats still dedication for you when he could of retired years ago. Cyndi lauper also still going and played Glastonbury recently to
They were carted off to a secret location at the time right after the awards show...nobody knew until they were on the road... Springsteen just had a concert and flew cross country to be there, Madonna didn't do it because Lauper was involved, they were there so long Al got hammered, Simon was one of the first to be contacted and didn't want to do it until literally last minute...crazy night but one of the best groupings ever

There’s an excellent documentary on Netflix that came out recently that goes into how this song came together and how this was filmed/recorded. Highly recommend.
You should watch "Do they know its Christmas" the British version of this charity release. It came out before this and it inspired Quncy Jones to write this one.
This is an absolute Masterpiece! I DO want to point out that Band Aid had recorded "Do they know it's Christmas" only a few months earlier. Wikipedia has some relevant info on both, including the performers, in the order in which they appeared! Like Donna, and others, I too knew nearly all of the singers. I could name them AS THEY WERE SINGING, but like Kathy and Lulu, had a bit of a problem recalling them after the video was stopped!
this song was the brain child of Harry Belafonte. He had the idea and approached Lionel RItchie and Quincy Jones to produce it. Lionel called Michael Jackson to co write the song and the rest is history. The song raised over 50 million dollars
All that songwriting & signing talent in one room & Dan Aykroyd-who says he ended up there by walking into the wrong room, he was looking for a financial manager & encountered a talent agent putting this together instead.
@daveborder7751, interestingly, you made a spelling mistake without making a spelling mistake, because you wrote "signing" instead of "singing", but "signing" is of course also a word.:)
When they broadcast the song worldwide in 1985 in so many countries simultaneously via some kind of Satellite Hook up, I swear the world was a t peace for 10 minutes. Now, no one gives a flying crap about each other.
Mom and grandma May know a of the incredible arrest in this video more than the younger one but it is still incredible and fun watching your All reactions to this song and video.
I was nine years old when this song was released, and it was at one point the most coveted hit single that everyone had to buy. Problem was the record stores ran into constant shortages due to beyond astronomical sales.
@Kathy, Lulu & Donna Thanks for exposing Lulu tp the greatness that existed before the craziness of the current civilization lol. Even better to see she enjoys a lot of it. Keep it up! And Donna, you are awesome lol. As far as recommendations go, all of you might really enjoy Voiceplay - Valhalla Calling
Everyone invited to sing on this was eager to help. Prince was the only one to refuse. The core writers considered Madonna, but decided she wasn’t strong enough. She was furious when she found out.
About 46 of the most famous American singers walked through the door to create this song in one day. ....Quincy Jones put up a sign on the door..."Check Your Egos At The Door"...a WISE man. Such an amazing song! Thanks for reacting to this!! Just an FYI...Canada also produced a song for this benefit. A lot of famous singers in that one too! Some you may know. "Tears Are Not Enough", is the name of it by, Northern Lights. ...Keep up the great work ladies!! Cheers
I remember when this was done and the newscaster that night said something that is so evident even today when you see this video and that was "all these superstars checked their egos at the door" when they got together for this fundraiser to aid the people of Africa who were going through a famine in Ethiopia.
A lot of people agree that Stevie & Bruce are a genius pairing💯👍👍👍 MJ was my favorite when this was released but others I was a big fan of (in this song specifically) are: Kenny Rogers Steve Perry (huge fan whole life!) Hall & Oats (see previous reason) Honorable mention: James Ingram, Lionel Ritchie P.S. I highly recommend the documentary recently released on YT👍
Whoever came up with the idea of having Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen have a duet was a genius. They're so different, yet it works so well!
As well as Dione Warwick and Willie Nelson, who are even more different but worked together brilliantly.
That would be Quincy Jones.
Love the contrast it was PERFECT between Bruce's gravelly voice and Stevie's smooth upper tenor register. Pure genius as you put it.
Prince was supposed to be there, they even already had a part for him and Quincy Jones decided Huey Lewis would be a great replacement and he was right.
I can't stand Bruce Springsteen's voice. IMO Steve Perry should have sung in his place.
When this was recorded, artists still had to actually BE artists... An absolute masterpiece.
This was in the 80s and played into the late 90s

R.I.P To Some Of The Singer's,Who We're On This Great Amazing Song,Are No Longer With Us, Still Miss You All, Always 😢,Gone To Soon & R.I.P To Quincy Jones You Will Be Missed
I think I watch this video 1000x over the years.
I always thought this was a Beautiful song. You guys did a Great reaction 🤌🏼
I agree with Donna, I can't imagine how much Money was in that room.
But it was Awesome !
Another notch of greatness to add to your belts ladies! Keep it rolling.
Thank you! Will do!
You have my respects Miss Donna, a special greeting to you from a fan
Thank you
This video is flawless in its flow, and it seems seemless, but in reality its spliced together really well. It took them 8 hours to record. Each person basically recorded a part then they took all the video and splced it to seem as if they were a choir. Whoever matched the singers together was a genius though.
This is what makes America great. God bless the USA 🇺🇸
Even Michael J. Fox took part in Tears Are Not Enough.
@@kevinnelson66 John Candy and Wayne Gretzky as well.
This is one that needs preserving in the National Archives and the Smithsonian
Dan Aykroyd was representing The Blues Brothers. From my understanding, he was on the studio lot conducting other business and just happened to walk into the studio. He was given the sheet music and was told to join in the chorus.
Ray Charles is just soooo god, and a legend 😍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️…!!!

Michael had to miss the AMA's because of this. He was at the studio getting everything prepared.
True
It was actually Harry Belafonte's idea. He recruited Jackson and Ritchie to write the song. It's in the Netflix documentary "The Greatest Night in Pop"
@@scoutmomskf It was neither of their ideas. It was a copy Americanized of the Band Aid song to raise money for African Famine by Bono & Bob Geldof
I had to sing this song so many times in school. We did it for three to four years straight and about once a month.
Cyndis part is like goose bumps all over my body everytime , and of course bruce absolut legend

It was a joy watching you guys watch this.
And followed by the Canadian Northern Lights singing Tears Are Not Enough, which is the best of the three songs.
I remember the Live Aid concert on the television, it looked amazing.

Just about everybody on that song were Grammy Award winners.
There was also one after this by hard rock and Metal musicians called “We’re Stars”.
Put together by Ronnie James Dio.
Ronnie James Dio and metal music stars made their own video to help the people of Africa called "Were Stars " by Hear 'n aid . There are around 40 metal singers & musicians, check it out.
when MJ and Diana ross sing together i swear its like one person singing 😊 amazing
This is amazing. To have that many great singers in one room is awesome! Love this song. Love your reactions!
Thanks
I think all the Jacksons were there. And I think Quincy Jones conducting.
I love this video. Thank you ladies
Greatest duet was Kenny Rogers and Lionel Richie singing "Lady" live. Must watch that!
Firs off, i did not watch you guys or the video, just your mother, her reaction, and the memories flooding back in her face, when cindy came on, she was nearlly up out of the chair, back at the 80's disco
i hope you read this, Im around the same age as your mother, out of all the videos you have done, i could see her face, the memories, of the 80's come flooding back, it was my teen years, and to me and your mother the best era, in music, music videos, as there was no internet phones and the likes, a house phone was the best you had.
She probably as i did, met the love of her live through that era or maybe just before, im not going ask a ldy her age, Im old school, you dont do that, she probably remembers, not just this song, but sitting through the greatest world wide 16 hours concert there ever was, with the UK, the US australia and a couple of small contries gap filling, with star like this world wide, given there time for free
along with the disco era of the time, the fashion, shoulder pads, flight jackets, sunglasses, from major films of the day, which influenced fashion, and hair styles,
the greatest 20 minute live performance by queen at live aid, phil collins, who played in the air tonight at wembley, jumped on plane, and travelled against the time zones and played in philly, in the same 16 hour concert
all dont, with no internet, no mobile phones,
when you met the love of your life, we had no contact through the day, like today, house phone, but to expensive, you made the next date, before you left that date, see you friday, disco, 6pm hopes she or he would turn up, things were better, you missed each other more
a great time
Hello everyone what a gathering of such talented group of prefomers I have to agree with Donna on that me and Donna are in the same age group both of us were the same age when this song came out. But ladies did you get my message yesterday about the hurricane here in my town of Huntsville Texas that left a bunch of debris and I volunteered with others to help clean up the storm debris and pass out water and food to people that lost their homes too. It would make us all feel better if you are fellow Texans could react to Lulu's birthday requests for teemu mantyrsa wintersun demos the fortin evil pumpkin at NAMM 2020 video 1 and for jari of wintersuns former band ensiferum for ensiferum Lai Lai Hei live wacken by rammie 666 from 14 years ago 570 views which both bands use Viking folklore in their music which I know lulu will love. And my mother Cathy wishes that all of you react together to this special requests for this special reason. So send me back a reply to see what you think. Thank you so much you are all awesome.
What about BRUCE??? His voice is amazing, I think they missed to invite Linda Ronstadt
this song was the brain child of Harry Belafonte. He had the idea and approached Lionel RItchie and Quincy Jones to produce it. Lionel called Michael Jackson to co write the song and the rest is history. The song raised over 50 million dollars
LuLu, baby girl.... this video came out when I was in highschool!! Around 1986!! ❤❤
Literally you know its MJ from a millisecond after seeing his loafers. legend, miss him.
All that songwriting & signing talent in one room & Dan Aykroyd-who says he ended up there by walking into the wrong room, he was looking for a financial manager & encountered a talent agent putting this together instead.
Awesome
@daveborder7751, interestingly, you made a spelling mistake without making a spelling mistake, because you wrote "signing" instead of "singing", but "signing" is of course also a word.:)
Love it! Im 56 generation x
When they broadcast the song worldwide in 1985 in so many countries simultaneously via some kind of Satellite Hook up, I swear the world was a t peace for 10 minutes. Now, no one gives a flying crap about each other.
Yup, that was a great moment
You should check “We’re stars” by Hear’n’aid, too.

You saw Ray Charles before he was actually in the video... OOPS lol 😎🤦🏼♀️
I was nine years old when this song was released, and it was at one point the most coveted hit single that everyone had to buy. Problem was the record stores ran into constant shortages due to beyond astronomical sales.
Now I wonder if Donna also recognized everyone in Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas

You have GOT to watch Hear N'Aid "Starz". Same idea, but all the headbangers of the 80s
