      been listening to Eric and his brothers for years, such a great and often complex player... "Fight The Power" is an axe attack, though I do love the Isleys too, they played with Jimi and Gales learned a lot from Jimi's cousin Guitar Shorty. Throw in Bernard Allison and Tinsley Ellis, you got my whole night's "psych list"... my Gypsy says i am like youtube, always a different version waiting. One sleeve fits all. Just saying.

    • @megajames3000
      @megajames3000 10 років тому +6

      He's a blues guitarist at heart, so it's natural for him to try and squeeze the most out of each note.... it's the "less is more" thing that bb kin and albert king lived by. not that they played simple stuff, but they didn't have to use but 4 or 5 notes to get you to feel it!

    ******FULL Disclosure****** I can't play shit on a guitar. However I've NEVER listened to as much blues in my life until I heard Gary Clark Jr accidentally live playing Please Come Home from a UA-cam clip. I was STUCK. Now DISCLAIMER #2 ****I come from a family of accomplished musicians*** I know the Gospel, Funk space very very well. When I listen and hear this dude I am beyond impressed with the balance and styles he blends in and out of. I've since listen to Meyer and Clapton and those guys and yes they play but they don't combine all the elements together like Gary Clark Jr has.
    lastly I find folks who talk about technical skill are folks who lake what BLUES really requires you have and that is SOUL. You can learn that either you have it our you don't. to minimize the impact of the actual SOUL needed to play blues, is to be dismissive of the entire genre and often... sorry to say it, white folks who can't just appreciate the talent and artistry of genre's like Gospel, Soul, R&B and in some instances Jazz ether dismiss them or weight schooling and technical skill higher so that they can feel better about what they lack. #FACTSONFACTS

    Wake up in New York City
    Lying on the floor
    Just outside of Marcy's - West 54 wow
    You gonna know my name by the end of the night, yeah
    You gonna know my name by the end of the night, well
    Bright lights, big city going to my head
    Bright lights, big city going to my head
    Bright lights, big city going to my head
    I don't care no, no
    Cause you don't care, no
    Start up with the bottle
    End it up with the bottle
    Taking shots, waitingon tomorrow
    Trying to fill up, whats hollow
    You gonna know my name
    You gonna know my name
    Bright lights, big city going to my head
    Bright lights, big city going to my head
    Bright lights, big city going to my head
    I don't care no
    'Cause you don't care, no
    Get lost in this city trying to find myself
    I went up a different person
    Came down somebody else
    I know it ain't right
    But its song in my head
    Wow I'm surprised that
    I'm still alive I should breathe in
    Bright lights, big city going to my head
    Bright lights, big city going to my head
    Bright lights, big city going to my head
    I don't care no, no
    Cause you don't care
    Well you gonna know my name
    Well you gonna know my name
    Well you gonna know my name
    Hey! You gonna know my name by the end of the night, well

    Yeah in response to Jack Houck I have to disagree and say I like how raw or as you say sloppy he plays as it sounds more like blues then say Bonnamasa who sounds more like a shredder playing blues. Gary has more soul and great song, has Joe written any originals or does he only do ZZ top covers? I like Johns playing though but still do like Gary's nastiness and tone!

    Don't massacre me. He's not the best of this gen. Sorry he's good but way way way overrated. If anyone saw the new Eric clapton crossroads special presentation this guy had like 5 songs shown. Some greats didn't even get one. He's got a great manager, sold his soul or something. Because look at bonamassa or even john mayor for Christs sake. They blow this guy out of the water in every way. He's got soul but is sloppy as shit. Sorry just had to say something.

      EVERYONE is entitled to their opinion. Here's mine. There are great guitarists out there.. Bonamassa.. Gales(prob THE most underrated)... many, many others... but here's what makes Gary Clarke Great... one, HE CAN SING!!! Great soulfull voice.. You get technical and of course Bonamassa is a better guitarist... but being a great technical guitarist isn't everything there is about be a great guitarist. Sometimes Bonamassa can't get out of his box(rehearsed sound, same fast riffs), whereas Clarke is twice as likely to go somewhere he's never gone during a show.. and I prefer this rock/blues sound to Joe's.. Bonamassa needs to be more improvisational than he has been lately.. fact. I love this driving tone, and Gary can really bend the strings with soul, and there is something to that. Bonamassa wins the fastest fingers on the planet award, but save Live From Nowhere In Particular - I'd rather listen to Clark on my stereo than Bonamassa.

      The fact that ' he's got soul but is sloppy as shit ' could be considered a criticism of blues is a perfect illustration of where 'blues' has ended up. I'm not saying its right or wrong but it definitely different from where it was. He's got soul and is sloppy as shit 'could' be a description of a lot of the blues musicians that I love.

    • @WesleyThibodeau
      @WesleyThibodeau 6 років тому +1

      Well said! Hendrix was sloppy too, if were being honest.

    • @lusitinho8761
      @lusitinho8761 6 років тому

      Idk man Mayer's cool, but way too much of an SRV head and a try hard when on his blues tip. Joe is technically phenomenal, but I think there's something to what I've heard many people say in that he plays with little verging on no soul. "Can play fast, but got no soul" as Albert King used to say about players like him. If you want to talk about slop, Rolling Stone has a list of Greatest Guitar players and plenty of these dudes were known to hit/ miss notes from time to time including Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton, the former who was said to be sloppy live, and the latter who had problems picking up the guitar while struggling with addiction.
      I think GCJ is doing his own thing as an untaught player, and has more soul than all of the aforementioned players, easily. I would rather have soul/ feel 11 times out of 10 over extreme technique, or to be overly influenced in my playing the way guys like Mayer and Clapton are especially. There is a reason Eric has, and continues to play with Clark, as well as the Stones, ZZ Top and other legends. GCJ is that good.
